There have been a few scattered Pine Grosbeak sightings in South Dakota in the Pierre and Aberdeen areas. I had one at Pickerel Lake near Waubay NWR a couple of weeks ago. At 8:30 AM I saw 3 Pine Grosbeaks in the tallest tree in the yard at 1735 Garvin Heights Rd. This is a busy road, and neighbors may be a little wary, so it would be best to park a little west of here in front of the gate leading to the cell phone tower. I didn't see any feeders or berries in this yard, and the birds flew to the south to a completely inaccessible area. It may be worth checking the subdivision to the north of here, which is loaded with berries, waxwings, robins, etc. Dedrick BenzWinona, MN Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Following up on Herb's post, I went looking for the grosbeaks again today, hoping to get a photo. I didn't find any in the original spot, or in the St. Ben's area, but I DID find 4 birds feeding in a crabapple tree on 13th Ave SE, about 1/2 block south of University Ave. in St. Cloud. 13th Ave SE is straight south of the Talahi Elem. School - there's a 4-way stop there. None of the birds I've seen have been the pretty pink and gray males. [mou-net] Pine Grosbeaks Bohemian Waxwings - Chisago to Morrison
I was searching for Pine Grosbeaks in several counties today, starting in Chisago and heading west. I found them in a couple of places in Chisago - one bird about a mile south of North Branch a block east of Forest Blvd (CR30) on 382nd St and just around the bend on Clara Ave, and a pair of birds about a mile from the Isanti border just north of MN95 (just east of Cambridge) on N Pine Lake Rd about a half mile east of Bennette Ave (north side of road). I wasn't able to find any in Isanti County until I checked out Braham where Denny Martin had reported finding them yesterday (database entry). I only found about 8 birds in the west side of town just south of the Elementary School ( HS) on Southview to 10th street. The flock was not visible until I drove into the 10th St cul-de-sac and found them in a crabapple on the north side of the loop. While I was searching for them I was up on the county line with Kanabec (Isanti CR4 - which is also Isanti 6th Street NW and also Kanabec 421st Avenue NW) and a large flock of them flew over and into Kanabec County. I followed them north on Quail Street and found them in a crabapple on the west side of the road (fire #1047). I also spotted one Pine Grosbeak in the same tree. I found about a dozen Pine Grosbeaks in Milaca in Mille Lacs County at the intersection of 6th St 2nd Ave. On the border of Mille Lacs and Benton Counties I was able to re-find a flock about a mile and a half south of MN23 that had been previously reported by Milton Blomberg. They were moving back and forth across the road. Another re-find was a small group of Pine Grosbeaks that Denny Martin reported at a farm place along Morrison CR26 just to the east of 360th Ave (~1-1/2 mile W of CR33 and a mile N of Benton County in the southeastern corner of Morrison). [mou-net] Pine Grosbeaks descend on Duluth, and other stuff...
Tooled around Duluth a bit for today and easily found over 100+ Pine Grosbeaks. The world is apparently their oyster and many bellied up to the ornamental crab apple buffet. Others dined on the plentiful ash and maple seeds. I found several scattered groups of Pine Grosbeaks including one flock of at least 60 birds. Generally, most of the action on the ground centered around crabapple trees. At one point this morning, in one crabapple tree, I observed an American Robin, several Pine Grosbeaks, a Rusty Blackbird(!), and a Common Redpoll...all in the tree at the same time. While hardly doing an adequate job paying attention, I also observed a couple hundred Tundra Swans migrating way up there, 2 Bohemian Waxwings, 30+Common Redpolls, 10+American Tree Sparrows, 15+Rough Legged Hawks, and 50+Bald Eagles. Coincidentally or not, with all the eagles flying around, I also found a fresh, (still warm), dead American Coot on top of an iced over puddle on the side of the road. I of course immediately thought it was a dovekie, or some type of pelagic seabird, because if I ever do find one of those, I'm sure it will be dead on the side of the road when it's freezing cold out. Besides, I'm not used to identifying dead coots on the side of the road, so it was an easy mistake to make. I'm not into avian forensics, but I really would like to know what happened to that coot Fun day to be out! Regards, Shawn Zierman.
