Re: [mou-net] yard birds
Cleone, Thanks for your note and your observations. Our website is static but we always love hearing what people are seeing. We are at the height of the spring migration and we have had lots of reports of numerous birds (and lots of different species) everywhere. Your list is not unlike my yard list for the past week . . indeed I also had Baltimore orioles (no Orchard so I'm jealous), Red-headed Woodpecker, Hummingbird, Indigo Bunting, and Redstarts!! Enjoy . . it is such a fun time of year!! We had a small flock of Pine Siskins stop by early this morning, about 12 or 14, I think. They ate at the feeders briefly and then moved on. I have not seen them this afternoon. We have a single Red-breasted Nuthatch daily, now, and still have a lot of White-throated sparrows and Robins. Seeing Yellow-rumps in the trees. Juncos are starting to arrive as well. Our regulars all remain also. Around noon today I had an influx of sparrows and juncos among others flocking to my feeders. They included 2 Mourning Dove 1 Red-b WP 3 Downy WP 4 Black-capped Chickadee 3 White-breasted Nuthatch 5 A. Robin 4 Song Sparrow 6 A. Tree Sparrow 1 Harris’s Sparrow black on head and some on throat but not in breeding plumage 8 Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) 2 Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon) The most obvious was a male 1st seen by my wife at 9 AM when she saw a small bird larger than a Black—capped Chickadee with a distinctive black head on our deck railing. I was able to see it and another not so distinctive around 1 PM. I looked at the rare bird alert photos of an Oregon Junco by Bruce Fall taken yesterday to confirm what we saw. 3 House Finch 6 A. I'm amazed at the variety of non-traditional feeder birds I have this spring. A variety of warblers eating suet and grape jelly, and even a pair of clay-colored sparrows are eating suet - something I've never seen before. Let's hope this warmer weather will create a nice hatch of bugs, and more larvae will be available, so they will have more traditional snacks to fuel them up for the next leg of their migration! I was also thrilled to see my orchard oriole pair back this morning - they nested close by last year and I was able to watch their kids grow up, as they brought them to the jelly feeder. [mou-net] Yard birds - St. Paul
I've had catbirds slurping up grape jelly for days. This afternoon - first time ever, I enticed an Oriole to stop on the jelly dish and peer in. He just didn't stay long. Maybe he'll be back tomorrow! Over at Como Park this noon, in the woods off the northeast edge of the lake, there were orioles, as there have been for the last two weeks. And I also saw - and captured with my camera - a palm warbler. I had never seen one before - exciting, and a rather pretty bird. Jeanne B. Re: [mou-net] yard birds gunflint trail, cook co
I'm so glad you posted this. I've been observing what I think are Fox Sparrows in my yard for the past two days and I don't recall seeing them here before. I am in SE St. Louis Co. near the Korkki Nordic Ski trail. The juncos also hit the spilled seed from the feeders this week and I also saw a red bellied sap sucker here this week-which was a huge surprise. Last week the Eastern Phoebes arrived in the yard - there have been at least 4 of them hanging around. Right on schedule, today the Great Crested Flycatcher and Eastern Kingbird put in their appearance. We have been getting these 3 species within a week of each other for the last several years. I was just thinking about the new arrivals this morning when I saw first the Great Crested and then within a few minutes, the Kingbird. I hope they hang around for a week or so as they have done in the past. [mou-net] Yard birds today in Beltrami Co.
This is the list of the birds I recorded for E-bird and MOU today. The most exciting was a Red-headed Woodpecker, the first ever for my yard in the 30+ years I have spent summers here. I heard the Hermit Thrush singing at dusk 2 nights ago and got to see it in the yard today. Lots of warblers migrating through, but I didn't get a chance to get outside to ID all of them, but it sure was a beautiful spring day and lots of singing! Backyard surprises continue every day. Yesterday it was a Tennessee Warbler competing with the orioles and catbirds for the grape jelly. This morning it was TWO Red-breasted Nuthatches, one on the bay window feeder, the other on a nearby peanut feeder. [mou-net] Yard birds in the snow
Two inches of snow overnight plus all day long flurries of Lake effect snow today produced more birds in our yard than I have seen in some time. I went out at 6:30 and scrapped off the snow under the feeders and added some cracked corn and filled the sunflower feeders.. Then we watched and counted birds all day. Here is the list with a few additions when we went out and walked along our dirt road. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - male Down Woodpecker - 3 Hairy Woodpecker - 2 American Crow - 2 Common Raven - 1 Black-capped Chickadee - 5 Red-breasted Nuthatch - 2 Hermit Thrush - 2 (along road) American Robin - 5 (plus 80 along road) Yellow-rumped Warbler - 2 American Tree Sparrow - 9 Fox Sparrow - 44 (plus 20 along road) Song Spparrow - 1 Dark-eyed Junco - 60 (plus 20 along road) Purple Finch - 5 Common Redpoll - 9 Pine Siskin - 6 American Goldfinch - 2 Snow is good for bird-watchers but maybe not for birds. [mou-net] yard birds and eastern towhee
Had 19 species of birds in the yard Saturday during the snow event...a new winter record. The most unexpected being an eastern towhee, which was also present yesterday (Sunday). The big question is whether she made it through the -17 temperature we had this morning. If I see her today, I will post it on Tuesday.
