[Mpls] audubon nieghborhood update and recognition of responsibility
for those list members who live in audubon or windom neighborhoods it looks like the vote for granting pop! a beer and wine license will be august 4th at the neighborhood meeting - those with an opinion are encouraged to attend (remember to register as a neighborhood resident prior to the meeting to be eligble to vote, if you have not already). slightly off topic - but entirely applicable to better community living and a better minneapolis: http://www.skyfishproject.org/ror.html - recognition of responsibility please sign and forward to friends. .andrew korf audubon TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] RE: Hollywood Theater plan passes
Good news on the passing of the hollywood theater plan, I was just commenting about the the coming improvements to my nieghborhood to a friend on the south side. I encourage list members who live in the audubon and windom nieghborhoods to support kim bartmann and the awsumb group in the re-development effort. Sometime in the near future there will be a neighborhood meeting to consider a granting a beer and wine license to the theater - there is a small but vocal minority in the nieghborhood who opposes the idea ... those who support it i hope will show up and cast their vote. -andrew korf audubon TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] RE: Hollywood Theater
Amy Draeger writes: "I don't think a Bryant Lake Bowl type establishment fits..." As a 9 year resident of Audubon Park, living just around the corner from the vacant, and up until recently, decaying Hollywood Theatre ... I would welcome a Bryant Lake Bowl in the neighborhood, a place to walk to for a glass of wine or a veggie burger on a snowy Friday night would be a great asset to the neighborhood. This view is shared unanimously by 15-20+ friends and family in the Audubon/Windom neighborhoods. That said, I suspect that if the plan is allowed to proceed, despite the protestations of a few homophobic, and progress resistant cranks in the neighborhood (whom I suspect would be pleasantly surprised by the increase in their property values in the ensuing years), the actual establishment would be much more in the vein of a combination of: Lucia's, The Guthrie Lab, The Riverview Theatre, The Modern, and perhaps W.A. Frost's ... all of which it think few would argue are great assets to their respective neighborhoods. Each of these establishments (including the sometimes a mildly raucous Bryant Lake Bowl) reflect the residents of their respective neighborhoods. I very much doubt the Hollywood Theatre Project would negatively impact our neighborhood - and certainly think it will be a great improvement over the abandoned decaying building and empty fenced lot that currently contribute, if nothing else, to the slightly threadbare condition of the block of 28th and Johnson St. Andrew Korf | Audubon TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] RE: Let's not balkanize the Target site
perhaps a suggestion for the broadway/target location would be something like Portlands Saturday Market http://www.saturdaymarket.org/, or a powells - http://www.powells.com/ - slighty offbeat attractions that would bring visitors and dollars (and vis a vis jobs for northsiders) in from surrounding communities and suburbs - like the nearby farmers market does now &certainly the exisiting target does not. >> "Coffee is a commodity and in no way should it cost $9 a pound, and your purchase of a few pounds a year is having zilch effect on the coffee market." dyna - do you have any idea what this type of thinking is doing to the lives of your working brothers and sisters in in guatamala? http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/guatemala.mexico/links.html and to the worlds dwindling rainforests? http://www.theanimalspirit.com/rainforest.html TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] RE: An Even More Destructive Cub Proposal for Northeast
Thank you for the info on yet another proposed CUB foods . These things are like tribbles, you kill one in one location and three more pop up in others. I as a north-east (Audubon) resident have been looking forward to the opening of the rumored NE Co-op for nearly as long as I have lived in my home (almost 9 years). The idea of a large box store opening in either of those suggested blocks on Central would be a disaster for the new co-op and the neighborhood (which I pass through daily) in my opinion. Other CUB debacles: Cedar and Minnehaha Parkway (resoundingly defeated by neighborhood) Penn and Lowry (pending - backed by a few - most don't know the city they want the MCDA property at Penn-Lowry) As a northeast resident ... I would ask CUB (and be calling Council Member Ostrow's office to send my request) that you please stick to the strip malls and out of our neighborhoods. Andrew Korf Audubon TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. [Mpls] RE: Target Closing in North Minneapolis
What about putting proposed northside CUB in the soon to be former Target location? Rumor has it they have their sites set on Lowry/Penn b/c of an empty MCDA lot, but I understand Lowry is a "neighborhood" corridor and not a "commercial" corridor and is not zoned for big box. I believe they would also have to take out housing at this location... Broadway, on the other hand, is zoned properly, better equipt to handle trucks, has highway access, and the closest big box grocer is miles away... thanks. andrew korf in audubon and sometimes north minneapolis TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. RE: [Mpls] Cub Foods in North Mpls./Should be on West Bro!!
I'm with kieth. I dont think the Penn-Lowry location is large enough for a behemoth CUB, and the last thing any neighborhood needs is the sea of pavement that would be required for a parking. I hope the residents of the neighborhoods that surround penn-lowry speak out on this issue and look for a more creative use of the city owned real estate CUB is interested in that would be a bigger benefit to the neighborhood. [Mpls] cub foods in north minneapolis
I have heard that Cub is looking at two sites in North Minneapolis: Lowry/Emerson and Penn/Lowry. Anyone know anything about this rumor? Have there been any community meetings about it? and does the addition of a Cub Foods improve the quality of life to a neighborhood? or just traffic? thanks in advance. akorf (part time audobon, part time cleveland,) TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Linder's comments and actions on a number of issues starting with his refusal to attend the legislature during the visit by the dalai lama: http://news.mpr.org/features/200105/01_hughes_dalai/lindner.shtml His offensive and ill informed remarks and legislation directed at our gay and lesbian citizens, http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/3746984.html and now his unbelievably disgusting, beyond the pale remarks yesterday - should have you, your republican leadership and the citizens of Corcoran demanding his removal from a leadership position in the house and from the house in general, unfortunately they are being laughed off and swept under the rug much in the same way as Trent Lott's comments were a few months ago. Suggesting that we should ignore the buffoon is nearly as offensive as his string of repugnant comments.
