be about 23 NLG, which is 10.44 E.

By other hand, your links in the MSX faq are bad it links to

Is that so?

Illusion City debugging process...

1999-07-27 Thread Laurens Holst

Hi!!!

While debugging Illusion City (I'm starting to get the hang of it!) I bumped
into some problems... They are not very critical (I can go on without
knowing about them) but still I'd like to know some answers:

1. What happens if a 1 is written to adress #7FF6 in the MSX-MUSIC ROM???
2. Please check out the subroutine in the attached .ASC-file... It
initializes some kind of device but I really have NO idea which one. If
somebody could explain me I'd be grateful.
3. About the Kanji-ROM, I'd like to have more info about it, because my I
can't find any in my current documentation. I have put the 32kB ROM on my
harddisk and it is a normal ROM with "AB" in the first two bytes and a
Basic-expansion adress set. But I need to know how to access it through
Assembly. Then maybe I can sort-of 'emulate' it resulting in a readable (but
still Japanese) text on MSX-computers without Kanji-ROM.

Some nice things to know:
- Illusion City only supports MSX-MIDI when the computer has more than 256k
RAM. It supports both internal and external MSX-MIDI...
- According to my docs MSX-MIDI only works on a MSX-turboR!!! So Illusion
City only tries to detect an external MSX-MIDI if the computer is an MSX
turboR.
- The check if the computer is an MSX-turboR happens in the CPU-switch
routine. If the computer is not a MSX turboR (checks BIOS IDBYT2 (#002D))
then it enters an infinite loop.
- The mapperroutines are really TERRIBLE programmed!!! It supports 2
mappers, that's a plus, but it assumes the primary mapper (the mapper
enabled when the system boots) to be in slot 3-0!!! On a MSX turboR this is
always true, because the internal mapper is faster, but on a future MSX it
might not be so. So when you have a normal MSX2(+) with an external mapper
which is enabled by default then the mappersystem will go crazy! While it's
only a question of changing one constant into a variable...
- Another terrible thing about the mapperroutines is the mapperdetection:
while detecting the size it corrupts the first byte of every mapperpage but
it doesn't put it back afterwards! Aargh!!!

Anyways, I tried to disable the R800-detection and adapt the mapperroutines,
and it loaded on my MSX2!!! However, it stopped with some messagebox with
KANJI text... So I tried it on my MSX2+ to see if I would be able to read
it. But on my MSX2+ it wouldn't load... Guess I made an error somewhere in
the mapperdetection-routines.

Jon!!! More comments to COMPASS

1999-07-27 Thread Laurens Holst

Yo Jon!!!

There is more to adore!!!

Umm, okay, some comments:
==
- When I tried to read sectors from a disk in the diskmenu but while
entering the adresses cancelled by pressing ESC (I had to look up the
correct sectors - I forgot them), Compass hung!!! When I tried the same
after a reset, it didn't happen anymore. This has happened twice till now...
I guess it has something to do with the full sourcebuffers.

- I'd be glad if you'd expand the SHOW ERRORS and the SHOW LABELS menus, so
I could walk through them faster by using left-right (next-previous page),
and a search-function, so that if I am looking for the label called LABEL
that I can type L and that the cursor automatically goes forward to all
labels starting with an L.

- If I start Compass without commandline, most of the time it auto-loads a
file into the first sourcebuffer. Why does this happen? How can I
change/disable this??? If I want a file to auto-load I will give the
filename on the commandline of Compass (in a Batchfile). When I execute
Compass without commandline I don't want it to auto-load a file. It's
annoying.

- There was something else but I forgot...

I have a lot of problems with accidentally overwriting other sourcecode...
Some solutions:
=
- When I select DELETE SOURCE, the filename isn't deleted. So if I enter
some new code, and accidentally save it before typing the new name I am once
again in trouble. Because I worked with that filename before it will look
familiar to me so I then -accidentally- assume I saved before and that the
name is already filled in... got it?

- When I load for example a text (let's say DISKVAR.TXT) in sourcebuffer 4,
and then I continue with my work in another sourcebuffer. When I have
changed what I was looking for I save the file. But OH NO!!! Once again, I
pressed SAVE too fast, and now I forgot to set the type back to ASM. Bam,
textfile gone. Backing up my sources, okay, I can understand that. but
backing up my textfiles??? Another one: I load a sector from drive G:. Then
I want to save it on harddrive F:, my default drive. However, sector- and
datafiles use the same buffer for the drive/directoryname. So, I
accidentally save the datafile on drive G:. Drat. Now I can PUTDISK the
entire disk again, because now it's completely corrupted...
Morale of the above:
-Keep up which type of data every sourcebuffer uses, and
-Buffer the entire drive/directory/filename for every filetype and that for
every sourcebuffer.

Doing it otherwise (that is, the way it now works) is very confusing.

And some things I already have told you but I hope you definately won't
forget to put in the next version:
==
- Compass still doesn't correctly support the INCLUDE-command (or whatever
it is. INCLUDE 2 works nice, the source of the 2nd sourcebuffer is included.
INCLUDE 2,"SUBS.ASM" however doesn't work, when Assembling to disk Compass
terminates to Dos.

- If you put a filename behind Compass then the file is loaded into the
sourcebuffer. However, I'd like to have the feature to put 4 filenames
behind Compass, which would then auto-load all 4 sourcebuffers.

- If Compass auto-loads a file, as well via the commandline as via the
INCLUDE command, it forgets to put the filename into the buffer of the
diskmenu. So if I want to save, I have to type the name anyway. And why do I
auto-load? Because I am too lazy to type in the filename by myself... So
then it's stupid if I have to type it in later as well.

Re: [Phoenix] Re: Phoenix project - The new MSX platform pro-standarization

1999-07-27 Thread Laurens Holst

The Turbo-R has a timer build in that is increased every 1 microsecond or
so.
Maybe 2 or more microseconds, I don't known the exact value. And it did
have something todo with I/O ports E5 / E6, or any number near these
numbers.

I/O ports E5/E6... that's the timer of the MSX-MIDI. It also has another
timer used by the PCM play routines. However, it is only 2-bit or so...

All I know for sure is that when writing into the FM-PAC registers the
core code
for playing music uses this timer to wait between two OUT
(port),register/value
instructions. If the timer isn't increased than the whole program will
lock up.

This behaviour is also implemented in my own TSR program Micro Music.

Oh? What is it???

The MSX2+ does not have this timer, by my knowledge.

Nope...

Re: Would a GameBoy emu for MSX be possible?

1999-07-27 Thread Laurens Holst

 Hi!

I wonder: would it possible to make a GameBoy emulator for MSX? I know
it also has a Z80... Maybe it will only work on 7MHz or Turbo R, but
 would it be possible?

Yes. It would be possible.
However, the GameBoy processor is NOT a Z80.
The GameBoy emulator is alike the Z80, but 'uitgekleed': All alternative
registers are gone, as well as IX and IY and all the instructions related to
it. This makes emulation easier faster, because the MSX can switch from
its own registers to the GameBoy-registers with a simple EXX and EX AF,AF'.
Further, the GameBoy has some instructions added to it, for example SWAP r,
which swaps the high and the low nibble. Very useful, the Z80 should also
have had it. No more 4xRLCA-sequences.
Also, it has some opcodes which are mapped to different instructions.

To cut things short: The processor has to be emulated, which is quite slow.
But using a lot of JP (HL)s (only 4 T-states) and other optimizations it
should be fast enough to play at least Tetris. And maybe, it will run on a
reasonable speed on a turboR.

Now the video: Screen 2 would fit nice, because it is also
pattern-orientated, etc. But unfortunately, screen 2 can only handle 2
colors per line of the pattern, and the GameBoy needs 4 colors. So screen 5
is the only solution. Still fast enough for Tetris I think but not for other
games. However, there might be a good solution, and it's called Gfx9000.

I even have already made a start with an emulator, it can view the header of
ROMs (whow!)... Next time I have nothing to do I'll add CPU and
Video-emulation... I'll let you know.

But at the moment I'm busy with Illusion City, which is by the way poorly
programmed. A lot of speed could be gained by optimizing the code... But
first I'll make it run on an MSX2. Optimizations (and maybe translation?)
will be done later (or not at all, if not nessacary).

Re: Basic routine for directory listing

1999-07-27 Thread Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha

Anyone has a simple but good BASIC "routine" to read the contents of a
directory and put it into variables
Set textcolor to backgroundcolor, clear screen, do FILES "*.LDR" and PEEK
the filenames out of the VRAM. Take in account that when using MSX-Dos2 the
first line displays the current directory. So search the first line for a
:-sign. If it is there, then skip the first line.

Aaagghh!!
Grauw, it's very dirty! And slow! :

Take a look at my page, in the softwares section.
Look for "Menu para diskette". There are two versions. One in
assembly, the other in assembly and BASIC.
I don't remember now, but I think that the BASIC version put the
filenames in BASIC variables or, at least, in a contiguous area in RAM.
Ok, it's in portuguese, but too few words, you can understand
easily.

I have done this before, so it works.

Yeah, me too.
I also said an interesting "launcher". The program just do a FILES
on screen and use the screen as RAM. I mean, no POKE or PEEK. Just VPOKE
and VPEEK. The program used the FILES to show the directory on screen and
some VPEEKs and VPOKES to put a cursor. More VPEEKs to read the desired
filename and a RUN. Very simple.
But this method has a problem: if the disk has too many files will
be scroll, and you'll miss the first filenames.

Yeah, I confess, I use BrMSX. FuDebugger is great. It saves a lot
of time debugging a routine before the final test on a REAL MSX.
And my TR never gave me this "60Hz headache screen"...

The problem with 60Hz and 50Hz it's not a game or MSX problem. Actualy
it's a problem of the TV or monitor. My "Amiga 1084S" monitor, that I use on my
MSX, Playstation, SuperNES and even to watch TV runs nicely on 60Hz, 50Hz
or any other strange frequency, because it adjust itself to this frequency.
Sonyc runs nicely on 50Hz on my monitor. On one of my TVs, it runs ok,
but lost its colors. On other one, the screen just go out of sync. So, I think
this is a problem of the TV/Monitor, AND NOT of the game or MSX, as
I said before.

I also have comments to COMPASS

1999-07-27 Thread Antonio Nestor Soriano

"Laurens Holst" [EMAIL PROTECTED] escribió/wrote/kakimashita/escreveu/écrit:

 - Compass still doesn't correctly support the INCLUDE-command (or whatever
it is. INCLUDE 2 works nice, the source of the 2nd sourcebuffer is included.
INCLUDE 2,"SUBS.ASM" however doesn't work, when Assembling to disk Compass
 terminates to Dos.

True! This is very nasty!! 8-(

 - If you put a filename behind Compass then the file is loaded into the
sourcebuffer. However, I'd like to have the feature to put 4 filenames
behind Compass, which would then auto-load all 4 sourcebuffers.

Yep, it would be very nice!! I want to boot Compass in a way for example like
this:

COMPASS /ASC1:info.txt /ASM2:source.asm /BIN:code.bin
/DAT#0100:thing.dat

so after booting it loads ASCII file info.txt in sourcebuffer 1, ASM
file source.asm in sourcebuffer2, binary file code.bin in the
appropriate address, and data file thing.dat in address #0100. In this
way I can automatize compass starting environment TOTALLY!!

And if we go even more far, /BUF2:100 puts cursor in line 100 of
sourcebuffer 2... well, ok, this is a little crazy. 8-

Another option is to use a sort of booting macro files, for example do
COMPASS /BOOT:config.txt, where config.txt contains this:

ASC1:info.txt
ASM2:source.txt
etc...

Other setting such colors, memory layout, etc, should also be stored in
text files, so user can change it manually.

Will you please think about this? For sure it is very easy to implement,
and very useful! 8-)

Hasta incluso!

Re: Basic routine for directory listing

You can read the directory (sector 7 and beyond for 720K floppy) using
DSKI$ and get the filenames from there.

The directory initial sector is in the bootsector?

There is some system variable that holds the address of the DSKI$ buffer.
 But I forgot which one...
