Well, I will try to post a text-review on www.msx.org this evening, but since I am very tired, the sun is shining and I'm waiting for pictures taken by Remco van Nunen it might take a little longer than expected. I think it would be interesting enough for computer magazines, news papers and maybe even (local) TV to tell them that more than 15 years after the introduction of a home computer system, the Japanese business tycoon who invented it is visiting a hobbyist fair in Tilburg to talk about future developments. So send out some press releases, but to avoid misunderstandings, please include some lines about the MSX revival project, about the MSX system (maybe a short history of MSX) and some notes about the popularity of this computer in Japan and the western world. The capturecard is a TV card with that BT848 chipset, so it has a Composite input for a VCR or camera. My camera has composite output for playback on TV. It works on the TV card. The TVcard can record at a max. resolution of 388x245 (or close to that) resolution. I have an old videocapture card of Trust (The movie editor). That works even better: Fullscreen capture (TV resolution) with realtime MPEG2 coding. I can put the camera on standby with constant video output to both the cameradisplay and the video out. For the rest: I don't know anything of webcams (what sort of resolution/videoformat what encoder/decoder to use, waht kind of software) I want to try this first. Maybe later I will try a Firewire card. The camera has it. Another thing: The PC the capturecard is in has also a composite video output (TV-out) on his Voodoo 3/3000 card. So enough options. I have a webcam myself with a video capture card to which I can connect a VCR or camera. In fact: SGGA once stood for Sinclair Gebruikers Group. So it's old, even older than MSX and even today we have members of the first day, so... YES we also do MSX! If you carry a certain item (I believe it was the book with the demons' prophecy, if not, another devilish item you can easily get rid of by selling or giving it to somebody else living in Banuwa village) you can't enter the church. If this is not the case, and you're for example just in the beginning of the game, you won't be playing the original Xak 2 (which wouldn't be a shame anymore or anything) and you got a bad copy... It is the copy protection. If you play a copied Xak2 this is the effect. This kind of protection is more difficult to find then a red screen saying "This is a copy". So copiers think that everything went well, and hackers will have to do a lot more searching to crack it. (and maybe at other locations in the game other things will happen that wont allow you to finish the game ?) There is a way around it. 4 or 5 years ago I patched one of the disks. After that I could get into the church. I'll try to look it up and let you know. I loved the new location. It seemed much less empty than the big hall it used to be held in, the stand-prizes were twice as cheap, and they put me in a room together with Paragon, my big concurrents... :) One disadvantage was that sometimes it wasn't clear where you could go. When you passed the MSX-NBNO-stand it looked like you were in the end of the building, but nothing was less true. If you walked on there was a very large hall with Delta Soft and more people having their stand there. The so-called 'disadvantage' that there wasn't a free bus riding between the fair and the station was absolutely no disadvantage: There were two buses riding every 1/2 hour, resulting in 4(!!!) buses an hour going to the location of the fair, and on saturday those buses have "piekendag", that means a retour from station to fair and back only costs 1 guilder! Well, I think that is better than the thing they used to have. The sphere was really good. I took 'some' candy etc. with me, and the cup with red sour "plakken" was empty really soon (a shame, because I really like them and I only had one of them). I showed Strategic Army, the Internet for MSX project "i", and also I have spoken a lot of people about JoyNet (I had a flyer about it on my stand). Unfortunately, the fair was over so soon that we didn't have the chance to play Laserbikes, sorry Augusto, but the people know it exists now, for I mentioned it as 'still the only game for JoyNet' in the flyer. By the way, I had 50 of these flyers, and at the end of the fair I got out of stock. There weren't that much new products, Flying Bytes presented v2.0 of Meridian, a MIDI-sequencer (unfortunately not for the MoonSound, which should be possible since the ROM is MIDI-compatible). TeddyWared finished SCC-Blaffer, which they made in a very short amount of time. It is a great SCC-music editor, inclusive replayer source etc. The editor is a mix between MoonBlaster and a MOD-editor. It is really cool (and fast!), SA will contain SCC-music too. Thunderbirds are Go, from DeltaSoft. A 10-disks game, which was something like the Infogrames-games (Children of the Wind, etc.). I already finished it... It is a great game, although sometimes a bit "Basic", if you get what I mean. It is made with digitizations of the famous television-series Thunderbirds. Compjoetania sold Sandstone, which unfortunately only worked on turboR yet. On addition, they distributed an update for Compass to version 1.2.08... Also, there was sold a little game called PILES, which was programmed in Basic, and was rather slow etc. known concept... well, anyway, I don't know if it's new. XSW-Magazine and MSX Info Blad presented their new Tilburg-issue. And further, a demo of One Shot Rising (OSR) was presented, which is a simple-looking, though VERY cool game. Also, Paragon showed Dome and I showed... well, you can read that in the beginning of this text. Het zal je dan ook verbazen als ik je nu vertel dat de mensen achter Sunrise precies hetzelfde daarover dachten... men heeft contact opgenomen met het CGV om eens te informeren wat nu de redenen waren om de beurs ipv in de Bremhorsthal nu in een wijkcentrum te houden. Om het verhaal niet langer te maken dan noig is: het gaat om de centen!? De zaal zou te duur zijn als daar te weinig standhouders zouden komen... De oplossing was simpel... Sunrise wilde via sponsoring meewerken en verzocht werd om dit "plan" met het bestuur te bespreken... Nouja!!! Je raad het al, vandaag lees ik in de mailinglist dat men het gewoon doorzet in het wijkcentrum, dus heb ik het betreffende berichtje maar doorgestuurd naar Sunrise... Vanavond werd ik gebeld, bij Sunrise was men niet eens op de hoogte van het feit dat het voorstel wat ze gedaan hadden was afgekeurd... CGV: Inderdaat zijn wij onlangs benaderd door Sunrise met het genoemde voorstel. Dit voorstel heeft ons echter pas bereikt NADAT wij onze beslissing om de Computermeeting te organiseren in een wijkcentrum wereldkundig hadden gemaakt. Er was dus op dat moment nog geen sprake van wat voor afkeuring dan ook. Natuurlijk wordt dit voorstel nog besproken in het bestuur, maar in princiepe zijn wat ons betreft de beslissingen genomen. Nu kan het CGV wel net doen of dat iedereen zo POSITIEF is over het feit dat men een andere (kleinere) lokatie is gevonden, maar dat is NIET CORRECT. De meesten die gereageerd hebben waren positief vanwege het feit dat er eerst sprake van was dat Tilburg helemaal niet door zou gaan. CGV: Natuurlijk waren de meeste reacties positief gestemd over het doorgaan, zij het in afgeslankte vorm! De negatieve reacties komen telkens van een klein aantal personen die er schijnbaar plezier in scheppen om de verwarring groter te maken. Het zal een ieder duidelijk zijn dat het MSX systeeem en het voortbestaan van de beurzen hier zeker niet bij gebaat is! Wat wil het CGV nu eigenlijk...??? Wat wil ik eigenlijk??? Op deze laatste vraag kan ik wel een antwoord geven. CGV: Als je dit nu nog steeds niet duidelijk is geworden kunnen wij dat ook niet helpen... Maar voor de laatste keer: Wij zullen zo lang mogelijk doorgaan met het promoten van de MSX, maar men moet dan wel beseffen dat het systeem en ook bij gebaat kan zijn om GEEN beurs te organiseren die gedoemd is te floppen.. Het aantal inschrijvingen van standhouders en de reacties van de bezoekers, en ook de signalen op het Internet geven ons voldoende inzicht om te kunnen stellen dat de beurs in zijn oude vorm de MSX geen goed zou doen! Een grote zaal, geschikt voor 80 kramen, met daarin 18 kramen en mider bezoekers. Je kunt je voorstellen wat dat voor indruk achterlaat bij het publiek! Onze beweegredenen zijn zeker niet alleen van financiele aard! Bij voldoende inschrijvingen en een betere verwachting van het bezoekersaantal was de beurs op de oude voet voortgezet, ondanks een mogelijk financieel negatief resultaat! Daarom onze keuze om verder te gaan in een kleinere locatie. Ik wil alle MSXers wakkerschudden voor het feit dat wanneer er geen Tilburg meer is en ook Zandvoort niet meer is, het een heel eind met MSX gedaan zal zijn: CGV: Klopt. - Programmeurs zullen weinig zin meer hebben om hun produkten af te maken... - Groepen hebben geen zin meer om dingen vanuit het buitenland naar Nederland te halen... - Bladenmakers hebben vervolgens niets meer om over te schrijven... - Bezoekers komen niet meer naar de kleinere "beurzen" want er is toch niets meer te koop... Als het CGV niet meer wil en ook Jaap Hoogendijk het niet meer kan regelen dat er een beurs in Zandvoort komt dit jaar, dan zullen we naar een ander alternatief moeten uitkijken want MSX kan niet zonder een grote beurs waarvoor ook MSXers in het buitenland geintresseerd kunnen worden.
