You can configure authorization/authentication, as Marc notes in his post.

Another approach, that I am in the middle of setting up, is the Nagios
sidebar add-on that is outlined on Mark Duling's "Monitoring Network
Services with Nagios and Mac OS X" site. While Mark's site focuses on
getting Nagios working on a Mac, the sidebar tool is cross platform.

If you go to and scroll down about 2/3 of the way, you will find a section
called "Display Hosts by Hostgroup" that include links to the script and
configuration files you will need to make this work.

Here is Mark's description of the add-on:

"If you prefer to display hosts organized by a logical grouping, there
is an add-on to do just that. The nagside add-on organizes your hosts
by higher level groups called domains in the Nagios sidebar (see this
example ). This addition does not
modify the Nagios object group configuration in any way; it is "merely"
for visual elegance and efficiency."

Once the scripts are in place, you edit /opt/local/sbin/nagios/side.pl
to set up the domains and then which domains, which users can see. The
benefit of this approach is that you can separate being a contact for
Host/Service from which hosts you can see. You can also group hosts in
an order that makes sense to you.

As always, your milage may very. I am recovering from some surgery, and
have not had a chance to put this into practice. Perhaps someone on the
list knows a reason not to use this approach.

If you do end up using it, please let me know how it works out for you.

This is exactly our workflow and no source modifications are needed.
It's just a matter of constructing a URL that has the necessary flags.

You can go to the tactical overview and click on the 'xx Unhandled
Problems' link to only show unhandled problems. To show both Unhandled
Critical and Warning Service issues you could use a link like the
following that combines both views --

Re: [Nagios-users] CGI and Status Map

2006-06-23 Thread Arno Lehmann
This should have been a new thread.

If it was, I could tell you that the status map cgi is not built because
the prerequisite gd package was not available. In the manual it is
stated that you need to make sure you have the gd development files
installed before you start the installation of nagios itself.

Yup. Easy enough to add additional calls to send_nsca in
submit_check_result ala --
/bin/echo -e "$1\t$2\t$return_code\t$4\n" |
/usr/local/nagios/bin/send_nsca host1 -p 5668 -c
/usr/local/nagios/etc/send_nsca.cfg
/bin/echo -e "$1\t$2\t$return_code\t$4\n" |
/usr/local/nagios/bin/send_nsca host2 -p 5668 -c
/usr/local/nagios/etc/send_nsca.cfg
/bin/echo -e "$1\t$2\t$return_code\t$4\n" |
/usr/local/nagios/bin/send_nsca host2 -p 5669 -c
/usr/local/nagios/etc/send_nsca.cfg

(yes, I send results to 3 different Nagios installations)

I don't use NDO yet but I can imagine that you would experience
duplication of data unless you had a different DB for your secondary
host and reconciled them some other way.

Poor advice if his current installation is not RPM. All things important
are located in completely different places.

A more suitable answer might be that the easiest route is to determine
how nagios 2.0 was installed and do that again ;)

I recently did an upgrage with RPM's from Dag on a CentOS 4.3 machine. I
was running version 1.2 of Nagios and I simply upgraded the RPM's to
version 2.4. I had little trouble doing so.

About the only problem I had was some Macro definitions had changed, and
I believe where they allow you to call contacts in my one hostgroup file
had to be removed and placed in the host file.

Other than that, I had no problems. You should have less problems since
you're going from 2.0 to 2.4. Good luck!

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios update 2.4

2006-06-23 Thread Mike Koponick

Ravi,

I have installed new, and performed an
upgrade recently.

The install new (tar ball and RPM) went
fairly smooth. The main problem I had was that my configuration tool places the
files in a different place, so I needed to link the nagios.cfg file, which wasn’t
a big deal.

The upgrade was also fairly smooth, most
the issues that I had again, were with the nagios.cfg file, only because of my
environment.

Keep in mind that I don’t use the
CGI’s and am in a distributed environment.

Thanks!

Mike

[Nagios-users] Distributed Monitoring - Redundancy

2006-06-23 Thread Mike Koponick
Title: Distributed Monitoring - Redundancy

Hello Everyone,

I’m running Nagios is a distributed environment which is working very well. I would like to add a little redundancy to the picture now that I have everything working. ;-)

Since I’m running a distributed environment, how can I add a secondary “Central-Server” to the picture? I’m not worried about the sensors or remote Nagios servers, just the central portion of the network. The problems that I see are as follows:

The remote servers send data via NSCA to the central server. Would they also have to send a second connection to the secondary server?

NDO now sends data to my MySQL server, will the secondary server also need to send data? This opens a can of worms in terms of duplicate data, etc.

It seems that a secondary ”cold spare” might be the best solution. Then there are maintenance issues with keeping software up to data, etc.

So many problems, so little beer.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

As you can see, there is something very strange.

The two first, are messages coming from syslog-ng, and the third is
active checking. Stracing pids did not lead to anything conclusive, as
each process is acting within their processing loop.

Will try to recompile Nagios, from the latest cvs.

TIA.

I use MRTG (which has the lovely benefit of exciting graphs) and then I
wrote a plugin that checks all of a host's RRD files (created by MRTG)
sequentially and compares them against a threshold.

Robert,

What I typically do is monitoring the switch with a PING, the I setup
services group(s). I have many switches that I watch gig0/1 as an
example as this is the port that interconnects all the other switches. I
have been grouping services groups based on the port that I monitor, and
then add the hosts/hostsgroups.

If you want to view ALL the ports, you can do that as well.

Check out the "check_snmp_int" command.

[Nagios-users] Hibrid configuration, active and passive (syslog-ng) and forkedprocesses not terminating

2006-06-23 Thread Marcel Mitsuto Fucatu Sugano
Hello list.

Is there someone having problems with Nagios 2.4 forking processes that
simply does not terminate in a hibrid monitoring configuration of some
active checks and a lot of passive checks?

Nagios 2.4, running on SuSE9.3.

Passive checks is coming from syslog-ng, from about 200 hosts. And for
each host, there is about 3 active checks.

It seems that when Nagios forks to execute an active check, the forked
process did not terminate itself. Therefore it begins to double
submitting check results to our central Nagios, and messing up with
services statuses becoming staled.

Someone have any advice on how to detect forked Nagios processes that
will mess with central Nagios freshness service checking?

Just grepping -v `head -n 1 nagiosl.lock` file isn't enough, as some
forked process might be actively checking something. But, if that
process keep itself running, it should be killed. Still don't know why
the forked process did not terminate itself, but i think it might have
something to do with syslog-ng, but can't tell for sure.

TIA,
Marcel

Glad to be of help...

Just keep in mind that you have now given the webserver full RW access
to /var/log/nagios... From a security perspective, and as I mentioned
before you could start with httpd_sys_content_t context and only give RW
access to the specific log files that need it. That will take some work
to get right and you could very well end up in the same spot with the
entire dir needing RW access. Regardless I am happy your up and running.

If the configuration can't be read, check the paths in the nagios.cfg
correspond to the correct locations of the
.cfg files. Check permissions and owner of the files.

When you run the nagios -v nagios.cfg preflight check what is the output ?

Based on what you said previously, it probably means that nagios isn't
starting or isn't able to create the pid file. Try running manually and
look for errors with '/path/to/nagios /path/to/nagios.etc'.

Make sure nagios can write to the files you've specified as lock_file,

configured as per the documentation if you have enabled external
commands.

As for your CGI errors, the http logs you provided show no attempted
access to any of the CGI's. Why is that?

Since you're using RHEL4, you'll want to verify that either SELinux is
disabled or you've created a policy that allows http access to the CGI's
and possibly daemon access to other files. If you see 'avc denied'
errors related to nagios in /var/log/messages then you need to disable
or modify your SELinux policy. There are several discussions in the
archives on how to do this.

There is no longer a selinux-policy-/strict/mls>-sources RPMavailable in FC5. All Policies are build from a selinux-policy.srpmpackage, which contains all of the policy source files.

[Nagios-users] Further differentiating between Acknowledged and Un-acknowledged problems

2006-06-23 Thread Friedrich Clausen
Hi,

I hope my subject is not confusing. A little background first - We have
a NOC that monitors that status of various devices and services, through
the "service problems" section of the CGI.

I received a request to make acknowledged problems "go away" from the
"service problems" section. I only way to could see to do this is to
modify the CGI's. So there could be couple of side navigation bar link
changes, eg. "All Service Problems", "Unacknowledged Service Problems"
and "Acknowledged Service Problems".

I can't see a way to do this with the existing web interface. Are there
alternatives around yet? But to be honest I would rather have modify the
existing one because everyone knows how it works. Is it time to start
reading the Nagios hacking guidelines? :) Or can this be done in some
other way?

I have tried to be as clear as possible but if this is not making sense
please let me know.

Regards,

Fred.

I run a lot of SELinux boxes, but at this moment our Nagios server
hasn't been upgraded to an SELinux version of RHEL, so what I am about
to say has *not* been tested/confirmed by me.

chances are you need to change the context of the cgi's to make sure
they have the httpd_sys_script_exec_t set so that apache will be allowed
to run the scripts...

Post some of the AVC's that it's thowing to syslog, as well as an ls -lZ
of /etc/nagios if that doesn't fix the problem and I'll see if I can
give you something more concrete to work with.

It's OK for the restarting of Nagios. But I have the same error when I stop
Nagios.

In the interface, I have the message :

Whoops!

Error: Could not read object configuration data!

Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error:

   1. Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check
for errors.
   2. Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data
errors.
   3. Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use the same
object data storage options (i.e. default text file or template-based file).

Make sure you read the documentation on installing, configuring and running
Nagios thoroughly before continuing. If all else fails, try sending a message
to one of the mailing lists. More information can be found at

Re: [Nagios-users] How to report the number of RDP session on a W2K3 Terminal Server

2006-06-23 Thread Hans Engelen
Indeed thats a WMI Query you could use already.

The counters for perfmon are :
Terminal Services\Active Sessions
Terminal Services\Inactive Sessions
Terminal Services\Total Sessions

Which do not distinguish between RDP or ICA sessions I might add. So if you have say 2 admins logged in via RDP, 10 users logged in via ICA and 5 users logged in via ICA but disconnected your counters would respectivly be 12, 5 and 17.

At first glance I see no quick way however to split the 12 active sessions into two values (one for RDP and one for ICA sessions). Other then enumerating the actual sessions and doing the math on it in your check (which means you are as good as obligated to run something like a small _vbscript_ on your winbox and have it relay the result through nsca).

Maybe I am overlooking a way to sidestep this.

Cheers,

Based on what you said previously, it probably means that nagios isn't
starting or isn't able to create the pid file. Try running manually and
look for errors with '/path/to/nagios /path/to/nagios.etc'.

Make sure nagios can write to the files you've specified as lock_file,
state_retention_file, comment_file, downtime_file and temp_file in
nagios.cfg. Make sure the command_file directory exists and is
configured as per the documentation if you have enabled external

2006-06-23 Thread Miguel Fernandes
Thanks for your quick response Jim,

I have checked all the selinux related packages on yum repositories
and almost all of them are installed (including selinux-policy,
checkpolicy, libselinux and libselinux-devel). There isn't a package
named selinux-src. Sorry for asking questions about SELinux on the
nagios list, but this is one of my first steps on SELinux and nagios.
Thanks!

Thanks Jim,

Apparently something changed in the SELinux structure on FC5, because
the directory src doesn't exists in /etc/selinux/targeted/. Anybody
knows about this change?

Based on what you said previously, it probably means that nagios isn't
starting or isn't able to create the pid file. Try running manually and
look for errors with '/path/to/nagios /path/to/nagios.etc'.

Make sure nagios can write to the files you've specified as lock_file,
state_retention_file, comment_file, downtime_file and temp_file in
nagios.cfg. Make sure the command_file directory exists and is
configured as per the documentation if you have enabled external

You'll need to salt this to taste, but it should be pretty close to
dead on what you need.

[Nagios-users] SELinux blocking nagios' cgis on FC5

2006-06-23 Thread Miguel Fernandes
Hi,I'm trying to run nagios 2.4 (latest) on Fedora Core 5, and I've installed it with yum. I have SELinux active, and I have the following situation:The nagios service is running, so I go to
http://localhost/nagios/ and I enter my password and the site is shown. But when I try to enter on any of the cgi's the following message is shown:
Whoops!
Error: Could not read object configuration data!

Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error:

Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check for errors.
Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data errors.
Make sure you've compiled the main program and the CGIs to use
the same object data storage options (i.e. default text file or
template-based file).

Make sure you read the documentation on installing, configuring and
running Nagios thoroughly before continuing. If all else fails, try
sending a message to one of the mailing lists. More information can be
found at http://www.nagios.org.
I have checked the configuration with "nagios -v" and it looks fine. I disabled SELinux for a second and everything works fine. I tried then to find out what SELinux rule is blocking the access to the files but couldn't find any log where this is notice. I don't want to disable SELinux, i just want to disable the rule affecting nagios. I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks!

[Nagios-users] Monitoring without TCP/IP connection

2006-06-23 Thread Roberto Raffo

Hi Folks.

I have to monitor some sites, from the central NOC, where
there isn’t a VPN connection.

I just thinking about using some system that use some non
typical connection like analogic phone, gsm, sms, gprs…

Than my idea is to create a black box (probe) composed by a pc
with Linux inside and on of standard analogic modem or a GSM modem and an Ethernet
cable to connect to the customer LAN.

Then I have only to configure this probe to monitor some
systems on the remote site and put it in the customer site. This probe then
call the central Nagios that use the event in a standard way.

Do you now some system like this?

Have you any idea about?

Thank a lot!

Bye!

No... Either I wasn't very clear, or reading english isn't your forté...

It could become something like this:

NagiosPID=`head -n 1 $NagiosRun`
[ $NagiosPID == "" ] && (echo "Something went wrong reading the
Nagios PID from $NagiosRunFile; exit 1)

if test -x $NagiosCGI/daemonchk.cgi; then

I know what /etc/init.d/nagios looks like, thank you :)

My point was that the "ps -p" check is currently not the most elegant
solution to perform the check. It would be better if Ethan or someone
else fixed the init script in the various packages, so that it would
work properly. He could include something like:

[ -f $NagiosPID == "" ] || (echo "Something went wrong reading the
Nagios PID from $NagiosRunFile);

Which should come right after the setting of $NagiosPID. I know, it's
a nasty kludge, but at least it'll catch the error if $NagiosPID
isn't read properly.

Cheers,

Thomas

The script probably contains a call to "ps -p" which requires a
number of PIDs. My guess is that these PIDs should be generated by
the script, but that something's going wrong :)

EDIT:
Ah, found it:
> NagiosPID=`head -n 1 $NagiosRun`

So it's trying to get the PID from the Nagios lock file, but
apparently there is no PID in there and thus the script borks :)
Should be easy to fix this, though IMHO this should be fixed in the
source/package so everyone benefits from it.

Cheers!

[Nagios-users] Perfparse problem: datas on mysql but no graphs

2006-06-23 Thread Roberto Raffo

Hi.

I’m reposting this because I didn’t resolve.

We have a problem with perfparse: after having added only
some service checks and having restarted nagios, perfparse stopped to draw
graphs. Apparently the data continue to be loaded in mysql, but with no grah.

Previously all worked correctly, with the sequent action
scheduled in crontab every 30 minutes:

0,30 * * * * /usr/local/nagios/bin/perfparse-log2mysql

If I put on crontab the script perfparse.sh, that send a sighup
to Nagios, it seems to work correctly (it makes graphs) but after a random time
Nagios stop doing check, I think because of the numerouse sighup.

Any ideas?

The script probably contains a call to "ps -p" which requires a
number of PIDs. My guess is that these PIDs should be generated by
the script, but that something's going wrong :)

EDIT:
Ah, found it:
> NagiosPID=`head -n 1 $NagiosRun`
> if test -x $NagiosCGI/daemonchk.cgi; then
> if $NagiosCGI/daemonchk.cgi -l $NagiosRun; then

> return 0
> else
> return 1
> fi
> fi

So it's trying to get the PID from the Nagios lock file, but
apparently there is no PID in there and thus the script borks :)
Should be easy to fix this, though IMHO this should be fixed in the
source/package so everyone benefits from it.

Cheers!

Thomas

[Nagios-users] Access group of hosts per user

2006-06-23 Thread David Latorre
Hello.

We are starting using Nagios and it looks great but we are wondering if
there is any way to have users access only to a determined group of
hosts/services, instead of the whole.

We have to manage the hosts of several groups of people and we would
like to show them individually the state of their hosts but only their
hosts, not the whole, for example one user USER1 who could see the state
of the hosts of GROUP1 and another USER2, who could see the state of the
hosts of group GROUP2.

Reading the doc about users and authorizations, it seems it is only
possible to access all or nothing. Is it true or is there any workaround
possible?

We have thought of trying the plugin for cacti to see if it could be
possible to do it so, but it seems not.

Any other idea?

Thanks in advance

David

For TSE, more precisely, the WQL query is something like:
SELECT ActiveSessions FROM
Win32_Perf[Raw/Formatted]Data_TermService_TerminalServices

Citrix is, AFAIK, based on TSE so that counter might also work for
Citrix sessions.

I believe it is available as a perfmon counter. Using an agent such as nc_net will allow you to poll that value via the agent. Citrix is harder. Will have to check that myself first.Cheers,Hans

Re: [Nagios-users] Check_oracle

2006-06-23 Thread Hans Engelen
Hi,actually if you look inside the check_oracle script you will see that it is trying to determiing the oracle home based on whats in /etc/oratab or /opt/var/etcoratab (not sure about the last one, have to work from memory here). Failure to get a valid oracle_home from that it falls back to a default and hardcoded (in the check_oracle shell script) setting. I just cannot remember if it uses the oratab method even with an ORACLE_HOME already being defined.
Also you might want to check permissions on the tnsping binary and for that matter most of the other stuff installed by the oracle client setup. Possibly the nagios user (the one running the nagios process) does not have the right to execute the tnsping binary which, again if memory serves, leads to the, in this case misleading, no tns listener output. Much of all this depends on which client version you have installed. Everytime I install a new one I spend a lot of time figuring out silly little quirks and changes.

Any ideas?
