[Nagios-users] No response from check_snmp (Plugins version 1.4.16)

2012-10-20 Thread Jatin
Hi

I follwed the quick installation guide to install Nagios and then
installed the plugins with the link for the steps.

I installed everything and got the UI for both Nagios and PNP4Nagios.
Installed the check_mysql_health plugin as well and started monitoring
for about 23 services. All the graphs for it are showing up correctly as
well.

Started with check_snmp plugin to test for connectivity to a remote host
using snmp but i dont get any response. when i use snmpget it works
fine. But there is just no response from the check_snmp plugin.

I am using plugins 1.4.16 with nagios server 3.4.1.

Version of net-snmp installed is : 5.4.3

Please help me out in this regard.

Thanks
Jatin

There is no error pointed out in the command that i use , it just simply
does not respond anything. I could see that there are daemons for
check_snmp and snmpget started in the background. They just stay running
but i dont get any response.

Thanks

  - Please have a manual , sample run, of check_snmp on the command,

Yes , while doing the sample run from the /usr/local/nagios/libexec
dorectory i see that there is no response from the check_snmp plugin. I
used the command in the following way:

./check_snmp -H ip.address -o OID -C Community-String -t 30

There is no response , it just stays on there forever.

Ok , i have seemed to figured it out. I was using iso. in the OID that
i gave to check_snmp but it seems it does not recognise the use of iso
in the OID , when i resolved it and gave the OID as such it is working.

[Nagios-users] Getting Performance Data in PNP4Nagios but not from Nagios

2012-10-15 Thread Jatin
Hi

I am coming back to Nagios after a gap of 2 years. So i might be out of
touch with some of its new features. I have installed both Nagios 3.4.1
and PNP4Nagios 0.6 version perfectly. No issues are seen in the
installation and i can view the UI of both the products.

Earlier when i installed Nagios with PNP4Nagios , As soon as i install
PNP4Nagios and configure it with synchronous mode i used to see the
performance data in Nagios. But earlier when i used it , i used to see a
RED Exploded ballon kind of an icon which i in turn click on it to view
the performance data in another TAB which would eventually open the pnp4
graphs.

With the current installation i am not seeing this link from the
existing service that would eventually take me to view its performance
data in PNP4. But when i view the PNP4 UI using the URL:

http://ip-address/pnp4nagios , i can see the graphs fine. Its only
that the link from Nagios UI to PNP4Nagios is not seen now.

Could someone please help me in viewing this. I am kind of used to it
and also love it that way.

Appreciate your response in this regard.

Thanks
Jatin

Yes. I used the Fedora instructions to install Nagios on CentOS myself.
It has been a while since I did it, though. The only snag I remember
having was forgetting to install some packages like openssl-devel and
 net-snmp-devel before compiling the plug-ins.
Don't bother to compile them, use Dag's archive:

Hi

The plug-in check_snmp_process gives the performance data for the
processes running on a system. I have a system which runs 6 java
processes and i want to know the total memory used by all the 6 java

How do i get the total memory used by all the processes running with a

[Nagios-users] help on check_snmp_process 's performance data

2010-04-29 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

I am using the check_snmp_process to get the performance data for a
specific process. Basically i want to give the process name to the
plugin to get the memory used by that process. I get the following ouput
when i run the command:

Argument v6.0.0 isn't numeric in numeric lt () at
./check_snmp_process line 410.
Argument v6.0.0 isn't numeric in numeric lt () at
./check_snmp_process line 554.
1 process matching cspc_server ( 0), Mem : 209.4Mb 200 WARNING |
'memory_usage'=209.4MB;200;300 'num_process'=1;0;0

I dont know what the first two lines indicate , can some one explain ?

Also can i plot the graphs in PNP4 if i get the output in the format as
shown above ?

Thanks
Jatin

[Nagios-users] check_snmp_process plugin -- clarification

2010-04-29 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

The check_snmp_process plugin gives me process level performance data. I
want to know how it reports in the following scenario:

I have two java processes running on my target machine , i use the
check_snmp_process plugin and get the memory usage of the java
processes. It reports me that there are 2 java processes and the memory
used is 60 MB.

Here i want to know whether the 60MB is used by both the java processes
? or is it something else ?
Please clarify me on this.

Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring a process with its pid

2010-04-11 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi Narsimha

Please find the detailed steps as below:

1. Install the snmpd daemon on the target machine that you want to
monitor , use yum to install it. command is : yum install net-snmp

2. Open the file snmpd.conf from the directory /etc/snmp , you need to
locate for the lines as below :

viewsystemviewincluded .1.3.6.1.2.1.1
viewsystemviewincluded .1.3.6.1.2.1.25

The second line as above is normally like: view systemview
included .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.1.1 , you have to edit it to :
.1.3.6.1.2.1.25 so that you can query the entire HOST-RESOURCES-MIB.

3. Re-start the snmpd daemon using the command : service snmpd restart
and you are good to start monitoring it.

Rest of the steps remain the same as mentioned in the mail thread below.

Thanks
Jatin

only able to get reply for only one mib parameter from the
 HOST-RESOURCES-MIB.

 3. Restart the snmpd daemon on the target machine using the command :
 service snmpd restart

 4. In the HOST-RESOURCES-MIB , there is one parameter which shows the
values for the processes running in the system , which is hrSWrun (not
sure about the name though) locate using a MIB browser for the
 paremeters supported in this MIB.

I will check out and reply with some more detail when i go to office on

[Nagios-users] Bandwidth Usage on a linux Box

2010-03-30 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

I want to monitor the bandwidth usage on my linux box using nagios. I
checked the already existing plugins that i downloaded. I found that the
plugin named as : check_mrtgtraf can be used to achieve this
functionality. When i read through its help page i sensed that it reads
these values from a file on the target machine which i want to monitor.
I have no prior experience working with MRTG.

Can some one throw some more light on how this plugin is used ?

What is the log file that it reads that data from the target machine
being monitored ?

What do i need to do as a pre-requisite to use this plugin on the target
machine ?

Is there any other way like say via SNMP that i can achieve the similar
functonality ?

Appreciate your responses.

Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Antwort: Bandwidth Usage on a linux Box

2010-03-30 Thread Jatin Davey

Hi

I downloaded the plugin onto my nagios server , I executed a sample
command but i have some questions on it:

The output goes like this:

[r...@pc-fedora-1 libexec]# ./check_snmp_int.pl -H x.x.x.x -C xxx -n
eth0 -r -fY -k -w 100,100 -c 200,200 -d 40
eth0:UP (12.2KBps/20.6KBps):1 UP: OK |
'eth0_in_Bps'=12506;102400;204800;0;125
'eth0_out_Bps'=21068;102400;204800;0;125

As you can see the output has the following:
eth0_in_Bps=12506;102400;204800;0;125

Could you explain what they indicate , i know of only in Bytes per
second , what are the other 4 values ?

Is it something like in Discards , in Errors Etc.

Can someone throw more light on this.

Thanks
Jatin

check_snmp_int is what you are looking for.
Take a look at the extensive parameterlist and you can check for most
anything you could think of.

It's on manubulons website, I don't have it handy - $SEARCHENGINE

 102400;204800;0;125

Could you explain what they indicate , i know of only in Bytes per
second , what are the other 4 values ?
Is it something like in Discards , in Errors Etc.

No, you have to activate the check for discards manually via a
parameter.
The four values in question are: Warning, Critical, Minimum, Maximum

Warning and Critical have been set by yourself via -w and -c.
Minimum and Maximum contain the theoretical values
that the interface can give by range [minimum - maximum].
Those values are supplied by the snmpd if mib. They can be overriden
in the remote snmpd.conf if desired.

It's performance data. If the author has followed the plugin guidelines, and
it looks like they have, it's current value;warning threshold;critical
 threshold;minimum possible value;maximum possible value.

It is, since I make excessive use of it. And it supports it out of the

So something with your PNP installation must be bogus.

Well , when i use the complete OID path i get the performance data , Say
instead of using

hrSWRunPerfMem if use 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.5.1.1.2

Then it works fine and the performance data is collected for the specific

I dont know why it does not do so if the OID name is not resolved ?
Anyone knows please let me know.

Thanks Jelle,

Jelle Smet wrote:
My question is: How does the plugin claculate the 1 min avg load , 5 min

 Hi Jatin,
The Nagios plugins doesn't calculate anything, it just read the load averages
produced by the Linux/*nix OS itself.
Have a look at this article: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9001?page=0,0

If you execute following commands on the command line of your linux box you'll
see the numbers originate from your os itself:

 #top
 #w
 #cat /proc/loadavg
 #uptime
... most likely a couple more

The only thing the load plugin does is evaluating the threshold you defined to
the value returned by your OS.

 Hope it helps

 Jelle

 run ./configure --disable-ssl
and after that run the make command .

Or if you want ssl , install the openssl and openssl-devel packages for

Subject: [Nagios-users] Unable to install NRPE Addon

 Hi

While installing the NRPE addon , i am unable to issue the make all command.

Following the NRPE documentation, first i did ./configure command and
then when i gave the make all command , it shows me the following error:

 [r...@pc-linux-1 nrpe-2.12]# make all
make: *** No rule to make target `all'. Stop.

I noticed the last step of the ./configure output was as below:

 checking for closesocket... no
 checking for socklen_t... yes
checking for type of socket size... size_t
checking for SSL headers... configure: error: Cannot find ssl headers

Please let me know what to do next.

 Thanks
 Jatin

Hi

I added remi repo and installed the latest versions in it , After
installation i executed the following to check whether they are
installed or not:

1. rpm -q php
php-5.3.2-1.fc10.remi.x86_64

2. rpm -q php-gd
php-gd-5.3.2-1.fc10.remi.x86_64

After that i restarted the apache web server using the command: service
httpd restart

Stopping httpd:[ OK ]
Starting httpd: [Thu Mar 25 09:13:16 2010] [warn] module php5_module is
already loaded, skipping

   [ OK ]

When i scroll to the pnp4nagios link using : http://x.x.x.x/pnp4nagios/
Here i am still seeing that the php-gd extension is not available.
Please let me know how to proceed next ?

The php-gd extension has nothing to do with apache configuration
itself. It is totally within php. Do try the following command:

rpm -q php-gd

If this doesn't give any output, it is not installed. If it does, it
must be at least of a high enough version (mine is php-gd-5.3.2 on
RHEL5). On RHEL servers, I use the remi repository to update php to a
reasonable version and install php-gd next to it:

# download the remi rpm file itself
wget http://rpms.famillecollet.com/enterprise/remi-release-5.rpm
# install the remi repo (by default disabled)
rpm -Uvh remi-release-5*.rpm
# now upgrade php and install php-gd
yum -y --enablerepo=remi install php php-gd

Afterwards, restart apache to reload the new php version and addons.
To check wether php has the gd module activated, create a simple
php-file (called eg. test.php) and put the following php code in it:

?php
phpinfo();
?

When you call this test.php from your webserver, you should find a
gd-specific section and the first line of it should say GD Support
with value enabled

Hope this helps,

Franky

Re: [Nagios-users] Changing the emails alerts interval????

2010-03-22 Thread Jatin Davey
Notification interval is different for hosts and services. You need to
set it for both so that you get the notifications as you want. If you
want notifications for the host then modify only the host template. By
doing so you will receive host related notifications once in 4 hours (or
whatever you configured) , If you want your services to notify you every
4 hours (or whatever you configured in the notification interval) then
you must add this information in the services template for the
notification interval parameter.

the nagios server using NRPE i am getting the following :

Is it an issue with NRPE or check_mem plugin.

The output for check_mem on the localhost is :

 bCRITICAL: Memory Usage (W 5, C 6): 30%brSwap Usage (W 5, C 6):

I have defined the command also in the nrpe.cfg file. All other commands

work fine except for the check_mem plugin.

Your issue looks like you can run check_mem.pl as root and get a reply
locally, but nrpe is owned by user nagios, and user nagios won't run this
 plugin correctly.

To allow the nagios user to run check_mem.pl as root, you have to configure a
 sudo command.

Make sure your check_mem.pl is owned by user nagios, configure your sudo
command via visudo, and then run this sudo command as the nagios user.

As root, you could try : su - nagios -c /usr/bin/sudo
 /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_mem.pl -w 10 -c 5

Or just wait to see the result on your nagios server.

 Cheers,
 Quentin

 Hi

I had downloaded the perl file for check_mem plugin and copied in the
libexec folder of the target machine that needs to be monitored. On the
localhost it returns correct values but when i shoot the command from
the nagios server using NRPE i am getting the following :

 NRPE: Unable to read output

Is it an issue with NRPE or check_mem plugin.

The output for check_mem on the localhost is :

 bCRITICAL: Memory Usage (W 5, C 6): 30%brSwap Usage (W 5, C
 6):

 1%/b|MemUsed=30%;5;6 SwapUsed=1%;5;6

I have defined the command also in the nrpe.cfg file. All other commands

work fine except for the check_mem plugin.

Please let me know what to do next.

 Thanks

[Nagios-users] Plugin to check memory usage on linux boxes

2010-03-11 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

Is there a plugin bundled with nagios-plugins that helps us in checking
the memory usage on the linux box. I basically want to know the used
memory and the total available , Even if it is given in percentage i am
fine. Please let me know if there are plugins to do so.

I checked the plugins that come by default in the libexex folder but
none are there for checking the memory usage.

Thanks

I use : 'check_snmp_mem' ; yet you have to make sure that the snmp
 configuration file on the targeted
Linux box, allows access to the MIB Subtree, containing the queried variables.

Save it as a perl script; in the libexec dir of your NAGIOS distribution.
Make sure the path to perl is set correct.

Give it a go , as such. Check for any errors.

I have not tried this before but the documentation states that

I defined a new service definition and had set the notification interval

I wrongly understood that putting this value to host definitions would

Created a new service definition with notification interval set to 0 and
then used the service definition into all the services that i needed.

This has no relevance since you're asking about service notifications. Look
for the service definition in question in objects.cache. Verify that
retry_interval is what you expect it to be. If it is, you have multiple
nagios daemons running, escalations defined or some problem with your MTA not
removing messages from queue after delivery.

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring a process with its pid

2010-03-08 Thread Jatin
You are correct , pid's change from to startup to startup but the reason
for doing so is that i want to make sure that a process if it starts
with some id it stays working as a long as possible and i need to
monitor it. The moment it changes the pid then it means that it has
either crashed of re-started with some other pid. I could also monitor
for the process status using its name , example having to monitor an
explorer.exe process instead of its pid but in my test environment i
have multiple instances of the same process and i need to make sure all
of them keep running. For example i hava 4 java.exe processes that i
need to monitor and make sure i have not more or less than 4 java.exe
being running at any given time in my server.

Thanks
Jatin

 Let me re-phrase it a little ,

Basically what i want is to give the process id as the input and make
sure on that target machine i have the process with the given id running
, once it stops there might not be the process running with that id and
hence i need to raise an email notification alert.

 Hi All

Do we have a plugin that can monitor process id (pid) on a target
machine , the target machine could be anything such as windows , linux ,
solaris etc and alert with an email notification when the process id
 changes.

 Appreciate your responses.

Someone hereabouts recently mentioned you can use jmx4perl
 http://labs.consol.de/lang/de/jmx4perl/

I can't say I've tried it myself yet.

If I understand this, you have a java process that you want to monitor.
To see if the process is 'running' your best bet is using check_proc,
however, if you want to see if the process is still functioning and not
hung, you'll need to interact with the process.

As Edwin stated, if your process opens a port, you can connect to it and
check for a default response using check_tcp (or udp).

If you wrote the java process (or have access to the developers) you can
ask that they build in monitoring responses. I have a java listener
that I added a hook for a specific string. If I send a specific string
to its UDP port, it returns it's PID and Timestamp.

What does the Java process do? If it doesn't open a port, does it write
to its log that you can check modification times on?

If you can interact with the process you can monitor it. If it just
runs and doesn't interact with others, you can at least monitor that the
process is still running. In general if you can check its health
manually, you can write something for Nagios to use.

days. I still doing some basic monitoring on my servers in the lab. I
would like to know if there is a plugin available for nagios that can
get the remotely running JVM's operational parameters such as: CPU ,
Heap memory used , Threads etc.

Please suggest me if there is a good plugin available for such a requirment.

 Thanks
 Jatin

[Nagios-users] Notification Interval set to 0 not working as per doc

2010-03-05 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

The Nagios documentation says that when you set the Notification
Interval to 0 , it will notify with an email alert only once when the
service state goes to down from up , it will then again notify when
the service comes back to up state , correct me if am wrong.

But when i set this to 0 , i am still getting email notifications every
10 mins for the service which is in down state for more than one day.

Is this is a bug or am i missing something here , Please let me know.

Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Using NSClient with NRPE

2010-03-03 Thread Jatin Davey

Hi Ron

I just tried this yesterday , I had a requirment to monitor a java
process on a windows box and return a critical alert if it has stopped
working. I used the following on as the nagios configuration , this
should be added to the object configuration file:

define service{
usegeneric-service
host_name
service_descriptionJava
check_commandcheck_nt!PROCSTATE!-d SHOWALL -l java.exe
}

This is working perfectly fine for me , Next step i am trying is to set
up a notification email if the process stops functioning. Hope this helps.

Thanks
Jatin

I need to know if that process stops for any reason.

Using command line from Nagios and with Wordpad.exe as a test I have
tried using this

./check_nrpe -H server01 -p 5666 -c CheckProcState -a
wordpad.exe=running

I get All processes running regardless if Wordpad is open or not.

I have read the manual and tried the various combinations mentioned in

Can anyone please supply a command line for NRPE that will tell me
when a windows process is running and when it is stopped I want it to
return critical

If you receive the email, but Nagios still doesn't send it, make sure

I'm going to guess that you can't send mail from the command line
either, and that's probably because your MTA isn't setup correctly.
Check your /var/log/maillog and your Sendmail (or postfix if you're
 lucky) configuration.

For better advice, I'd need more info on what was going wrong,
according to the results of the test and the log output.

 Good Luck.

You can monitor process on remote box using nrpe + check_procs

1. you have to install nrpe on remote box
2. and then have to configure command in nrpe.cfg eg check_procs

for more infor

./check_procs -h

[Nagios-users] Not able to get the newly added host on the Nagios UI

2010-01-06 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi

I am a new user of Nagios. I installed the Nagios core , Plugins and the
NRPE addon based on the instructions mentioned in the quick start guide.
As of the NRPE addon i installed it using the document that was provided
with the tar file and everything went fine. Similarly i installed the
NRPE plug in and NRPE daemon on the machine that i wanted to monitor.

On my Nagios box when i issue the following command:

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H 192.168.0.1

my remote host responds with the NRPE version correctly. Also i could
not see any errors in the cfg file by issuing the command:

/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg

Upon re-starting the Nagios service i could see the following:

[r...@pc-fedora-1 objects]# service nagios restart
Running configuration check...done.
Stopping nagios: .done.
Starting nagios:su: warning: cannot change directory to
/var/spool/nagios: No such file or directory
This account is currently not available.
 done.

Upon opening the UI i am still not able to see any hosts added. I have
also added the command and input service files needed to contact the
remote host.

Please help.

Thanks
Jatin

[Nagios-users] Getting parameters and plotting them in terms of % (Percentage)

2010-01-06 Thread Jatin Davey
Hi all

I am seeing that graphs getting shown for the corresponding service that
i define but they are shown in terms of only 4 points , either critical
, ok , warning or indeterminate.

I need to see the graphs in terms of utilization values such as:

CPU -- % used (out of 100%)
Memory -- Total memory (Used and free memory in terms of MB or KB etc)
Disk Usage -- Used Disk space and free disk space (In terms of MB or GB etc)
Network I/O -- Packets sent or received etc

Please provide any pointers on how get this using Nagios.

Thanks
Jatin

2010-01-05 Thread Jatin Davey
Thanks Sebastian.

I have one question if i use the command as mentioned. Will it also
install all the depadencies that are required for the functioning of a
complete Nagios application. I mean will it also make the GUI of Nagios
functional ?

Thanks
Jatin

One easy way ist use the EPEL repository
 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

then yum install nagios does the job

The command will install the core nagios capabilities, which include the
 web gui .

you will still need to configure the nagios and make sure the apache
service is running and responding , but to answer in short , yes!
