Anyone out there runing XI on SLES (specifically SLES 11)? While the actual code (a mix of C, Perl, and PHP) don't care what distribution it is, all of the installation scripts, documentation, cron jobs, etc. are tailored for RHEL/CentOS, and it would be very difficult to get them properly ported over. We may expand the distro support in the future, but for the time being it is limited to those. That said, you can still use XI in a SLES shop. You would need one system (or virtual machine) running XI on a CentOS base, but it could then monitor your SLES systems as targets. The documentation for the Agent piece currently covers RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Debian, but that would be quite a bit easier to adapt to SLES than XI itself. -- Tony Yarusso Technical Team ___ Nagios Enterprises, LLC Email: tyaru...@nagios.com Web:www.nagios.com -- Enable your software for Intel(R) Active Management Technology to meet the growing manageability and security demands of your customers. Re: [Nagios-users] Backing up Nagios on Ubuntu 10.04
What it really comes down to is exactly *what* you want to back up. If it's just the configuration, then the stuff in /etc should be all you need. The stuff in /var will contain the current state (logs, lock files, status.dat, etc.). The things in /usr should only be things that are installed by the package, and probably don't need to be backed up. [Nagios-users] Nagios PPA for Ubuntu
Hey all, I wanted to let you know about something I've been fiddling with. As we all know, compiling programs from source has the advantage of always giving you the most up to date version, but isn't as convenient to maintain, whereas using package repositories is easy to administer but sometimes out of date. Launchpad.net provides a service called Personal Package Archives, where you can build and host packages for Ubuntu, for testing, small-userbase mods, etc. What I've done is take the existing Ubuntu/Debian packages, insert the most recent upstream tarball, and rebuild. Theoretically this should produce an up-to-date package. So, if you like having the latest and greatest, but also like to have APT manage everything, this might be a solution that could work for you. That said, I do want to make sure nobody gets the wrong idea here, so a few clarifications: 1) The only QA I've done on these is that it builds and installs without errors and gives the default screen properly checking localhost services. 2) This is not actually supported by Nagios, Inc. for support contract customers, nor is it guaranteed to continue to exist - it's a pet project to see if this would work, since many of our staff use Ubuntu. 3) This is only build for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx at the moment. I haven't made any attempts to build on or backport to older releases. 4) Launchpad doesn't actually support building packages for Debian, although given the close freeze dates of Lucid and Squeeze it's highly likely it will work on both I think. 5) Obviously this is only for Debian-based distros - I'm not going to attempt anything similar for the Red Hat family or anything else at this time. So, if you'd like to pull up a test system to try Nagios 3.2.2 and Nagios Plugins 1.14.15, check it out at https://launchpad.net/~nagiosinc/+archive/ppa , and let me know if it works for you. -- Tony Yarusso Technical Team ___ Nagios Enterprises, LLC Email: tyaru...@nagios.com Web:www.nagios.com -- Start uncovering the many advantages of virtual appliances and start using them to simplify application deployment and accelerate your shift to cloud computing. http://p.sf.net/sfu/novell-sfdev2dev ___ Nagios-users mailing list Nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/nagios-users ::: Please include Nagios version, plugin version (-v) and OS when reporting any issue. ::: Messages without supporting info will risk being sent to /dev/null

I've been trying it out in the office here, and it seems WAY simpler than the traditional method for distributed setups. The one caution I'll give with that is that it only distributes the checks, so if you have for instances pnp4nagios for performance graphs that load will still be centralized. I wrote a script last week meant to aid in the installation of DNX - you can download that from http://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nagiosxi/scripts/NagiosXI-DNX.sh and let me know how it works for you. Re: [Nagios-users] nagios plugins return code issue
This probably means that a subroutine from one of the used perl libraries is bailing out with an error, although why I don't know. Are you sure you're passing all of the arguments the same on the command line as Nagios is? One thing that I can tell you is that those plugins are out of date, since they use the old value of -1 for Unknown which should be 3 now, so who knows what other issues there are. [Nagios-users] Seedcamp voting is open!
For those of you who haven't seen yet, the voting for Nagios Seedcamp projects began today! As background, this (first) Seedcamp was a call for completely new and interesting projects for use with Nagios Core and/or Nagios XI, including wizards, check plugins, and documentation. Fifteen submissions were received, and from the descriptions there look to be some pretty nifty things in there. So now we enter phase two, which is where YOU, all of our lovely users and community members, should go check out the submissions in the Seedcamp category of the Nagios Exchange (http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Seedcamp) and then vote for them. Read the descriptions, download and install, play around with them, and then let us know what you think at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3Z9JRDX ! Voting will be open for two weeks, after which the winners will be announced. The authors of the top three projects as determined by your votes will be awarding cash prizes in the amount of $1,000, $750, and $500 USD respectively. Hopefully this will then encourage further development and improvement of those projects and others to follow. For a little more about Seedcamp (and the URL to tell your friends), see http://www.nagios.org/seedcamp . As an aside and disclosure, I'll mention that two of the projects are my own submissions. Both work with both Nagios Core and Nagios XI: * Ubuntu / Debian (and family) Nagios Agent package (works with both XI and Core) (written on company time) http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Addons/Monitoring-Agents/Ubuntu-Nagios-Agent/details * Common Alerting Protocol check plugin (for things like severe weather notices, Amber alerts, and other civil emergency notifications (written on personal time) http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Others/check_cap-%252D-check-Common-Alerting-Protocol-feeds/details Now go check them all out, and don't forget to vote! -- Tony Yarusso Technical Team ___ Nagios Enterprises, LLC Email: tyaru...@nagios.com Web:www.nagios.com -- The Palm PDK Hot Apps Program offers developers who use the Plug-In Development Kit to bring their C/C++ apps to Palm for a share of $1 Million in cash or HP Products.
