Re: [Native_American] Hiding One's Heritage

2002-10-14 Thread Softbreze45
deb...i loved your letter! and i dont think you are strange at all! let me tell you an experience i had in my back yard in Pa...i worked 2nd shift, so never went to bed before 1 am or so...i had a habit in the summer of sitting outside in my back yard on my swingme and the dog...just to look at the stars and relax...i had just gotten the info about my gg-grandfather marrying an "indian woman..." but no name...i was frustrated and sad...thought i would never find her, and why was i even trying? you know..the "about to give up mode"i was just sitting there and the hair on the back of my neck stood up...my dog perked up her ears and turned around...didnt growl or anything...but was on alert...i turned around and saw three human figures standing there...one was an old man, another a young woman, and another younger man...they were dressed in plain buckskin..no feathers, drums etc. just standing there...i thought maybe i was dreaming...but the dog...she kept looking at them...the old man smiled at me...the woman took one step forward and held out her hand to me...then...they just disappeared...i was ready to run screaming to the house! then a real calm came over me...somehow i knew i didnt have to be afraid...the dog turned around and layed her head in my lap and went to sleep! so if she wasnt alarmed, i thought i didnt have to be either...i started to think about things...that very day, and elder had told me that my ancestors were looking out for me, and to keep on trying to find them...in my heart i knew something wonderful and special had just happened...i feel these were my long ago relatives telling me not to give up...that they were there...and my decision to move to Colorado was the right one...i have never forgotten that...so if you think you are nuts sis, then so am i! lol! i have also seen indian people dancing in the field across from our building...just faded images...i learned that the cheyenne and other tribes used to camp around this area before denver was even built! i dont ever discount what other people hear and see...there are many many things we dont understand...but we must keep an open mind...good for you deb! at least your guests are welcome in your house...they will never harm you!

[Native_American] Powwow Affair

2002-10-14 Thread Softbreze45
everyone, han...thought this was a good storyour people are coming back to thier culture!

October 11, 2002Powwow a family affairBy Heidi Bell Gease, Journal Staff WriterRAPID CITY — Tate Bear bounces and sways to the rhythm of pounding drumbeats, keeping time with tiny feet in beaded moccasins while his parents tie on his headpiece. He is eager to join the crowd of dancers on the floor at the 16th annual Black Hills Pow Wow Arts Expo, which began Friday at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

At 20 months old, Tate is a powwow veteran. “He’s been dancing since he could walk,” said his grandmother, Carmen Clairmont, a Sicangu Lakota from Rosebud who now lives in Denver. “His mother already had outfits all ready for him. We were carrying him in outfits when he couldn’t even walk.”

Clairmont wears the beaded regalia of a traditional dancer. Her son is a grass dancer, one daughter is a jingle dress dancer, and Tate’s mother is a fancy shawl dancer. “All three of my kids dance with their families now,” Clairmont said. “That’s how I brought them up. We live in an urban environment, but I brought them up in traditional ways.”

And nothing makes her happier. Clairmont didn’t begin dancing herself until she was 18 years old and a student at Haskell College. Her parents attended boarding school during an era when students were punished for speaking Lakota or practicing cultural traditions. Later, Clairmont and her siblings also attended boarding school.“We knew Latin before we knew Lakota,” Clairmont said, shaking her head at the thought. “It makes me mad. It makes me real sad.”

Her parents’ generation was taught to be ashamed of their heritage, Clairmont said, but her generation has helped change that. “I’m real proud of who I am and what I am, from the inside out. And that’s how my kids are, also.”As a young woman, Clairmont decided she would raise her children with strong roots in their Lakota heritage. She gave them all Lakota names. They began dancing at powwows when they each were barely a year old. They learned the Lakota language, as did their mother.“I was going to make sure that’s what I did,” said Clairmont, whose Indian name —Oyate Wacinyahpi Win — translates as “Helper of the People.” “If I didn’t, who else would teach them?”

Her daughters taught themselves to bead, though, and have helped create many of the family’s dance outfits. “I just didn’t think I had the patience to do it,” Clairmont said. (The top to her outfit contains so many beads that she estimates it weighs 25 pounds.)Clairmont’s son and his family were unable to attend this weekend’s powwow because of work, but the whole crew often travels together to powwows across the country. They share expenses, baby care, and time, visiting with old friends and making new ones.“That’s a really good family activity for us,” Clairmont said. “It keeps us together as a family.”

The whole family lives in Denver, where the children grew up and Clairmont is an operations analyst for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Living in the city makes it a bit harder to follow traditional ways, but because it takes more effort, “I think we appreciate it more,” Clairmont said. “We go home (to the reservation) to take care of our ceremonies and sundances.”Coming back year after year to the Black Hills Pow Wow feels a bit like coming home, too. “I was real anxious to come,” Clairmont said. “It just feels real good to be here.”Questions or comments on this story? [Native_American] Fw: [cherokeencn] The Louisiana Trooper

2002-10-14 Thread BILL TAYLOR GG

 THE LOUISIANA TROOPER!

Two guys are driving through Louisiana when they get pulled over by a
state
trooper. The trooper walks up, taps on the window with his nightstick,
the
driver rolls down the window, and the trooper smacks him in the head with
 the stick.

The driver says, Why'd you do that?

The trooper says, You're in Louisiana, son. When I pull you over, you'll
 have your license ready.

Driver says, I'm sorry, officer, I'm not from around here.

The trooper runs a check on the guy's license, and he's clean. He gives
the guy his license back and walks around to the passenger side and taps
on the window. The passenger rolls his window down, and the trooper
smacks
 him with the nightstick.

The passenger says, What'd you do that for?

The cop says, Just making your wishes come true.

 The passenger asks, Huh?

The cop says, I know that two miles down the road you're gonna say: 'I
wish that jerk would've tried that stuff with me!'

[Native_American] Fish Equals Life (Tragedy)

2002-10-14 Thread andre cramblit

Just a quick rundown, for anyone interested. All these articles are
currently linked from front page of fishsniffer.com.

***

October 10, 2002 Fishermen File Lawsuit Against Klamath Ten Year Plan
http://www.fishsniffer.com/dbachere/101002klamathlawsuit.html

Troy Fletcher, executive director of the Yurok Tribe, urged anglers to
call or write Secretary Gale Norton, to express their outrage over the
destruction of Klamath River fish caused by the Ten Year Plan. Contact
her at: U.S. Department of the Interior, 1849 C. Street N.W. Washington, DC
20240 (202) 208-3100.

***

October 10, 2002 Bush Administration Must Act to Halt Klamath Fish Kills
http://www.fishsniffer.com/guest/101002ctklamath.html

The Bush administration, working through the Department of Interior and
the Bureau of Reclamation, must be held fully accountable for the poor
river conditions and the massive fish kills. The federal government is not
fulfilling its legal responsibilities under the Endangered Species Act or
meeting its legally mandated Tribal Trust obligations. Treaty rights of the
Tribes grant them reserved fishing rights and guarantee the protection of
fishery resources along with their right to fish. The Interior Department
is in total denial, disregarding the central fact of the fish kill - their
need for more water.

***

October 11, 2002 River of Death
http://www.fishsniffer.com/jcarter/101102riverofdeath.html

It has also affected all of us who depend on these fish. A member of the
Yurok tribe spoke with me and voiced the opinion we all have, that
cooperation between the tribe, the fishermen, the guides, the resort
industries, and the environmental groups is paramount to getting our
message out to the powers that be. We need to fight for these fish.

[Native_American] Fw: [cherokeencn] seven fires

2002-10-14 Thread BILL TAYLOR GG

Interesting...Bill GG

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sent: Monday, October 14, 2002 4:48 PM

Subject: Seven Fires Prophecy
SEVEN FIRES PROPHECY OF THE ANISHNABE PEOPLE AND THE PROCESS OF
RECONCILIATION

At a time when the Anishnabe People were all living in peace and
harmony along the shores of the Great Salt Ocean(Atlantic), there came among
them seven prophets.

So begins the reading of the Seven Fires Prophecy as woven on a
Wampum Belt sacred to the Anishnabe people throughout Turtle Island (North
America). Chief William Commanda, the 87 year old spiritual elder of the
Algonquin Nation is now the present holder of this belt which is believed to
have come into existence circa 1400 CE. The Seven Fires Prophecy is ancient
but its message is relevant for today's world and for us, who must bring
about a new balance to our lives and to the environment which we need for
survival.

The Anishnabe are a family of indigenous peoples who, historically,
lived along the eastern coast of North America. Anishnabe is translated as
good person or one who came down from the sky. Somewhere in a period of
time before 1000 CE. And 1400 CE a great migration of the Anishnabe people
took place. This migration saw 10,000 large canoes filled with people head
inland following what is now called the Saint Lawrence River toward the
Great Lakes.

Today, Anishnabe people still live along the East Coast of the U.S.
and Canada, as well as, the shores of the Great Lakes, the Rocky Mountains
and even as far south as Mexico. They are called by many names including,
Cree, Pequot, Wampanoag, Abenaki, Algonquin, MikmaÌq, Shawnee, Innu and
Chippawa. The Anishnabe family is probably the largest of all the indigenous
nations living on the North American continent.

Why, then, did a people who lived for many thousands of years decide
to leave their homes and travel many thousands of miles to new and
unfamiliar lands at a time when, according to Anishnabe traditions, we were
living in peace and harmony? The answer lies in the reading of the Seven
Fires Prophecy and its implications not only for the Anishnabe people living
1000 years ago but also for us today.

What does the Seven Fires Prophecy say to Anishnabe people and how
does that relate to people living in North America in the year 2000? First,
the Seven Fires Prophecy is not only addressed to the Indian people of this
land, it was meant for people of all colors. It is a warning and at the same
time a promise of better things to come if all of us living on Turtle Island
can learn to put aside our egos, our cultural and racial bias and come
together as a people, one people, for our collective healing and the healing
of Mother Earth.

The first three Prophets who came among our people brought a
warning. They told us to be aware that a race of people, referred to as the
Light Skinned Race would be coming to these lands.

They advised the Anishnabe that in the interest of security for our
people and our nation, it would be wise if we divided our population into
two groups. One would leave and go deep into the interior of this continent
and wait until the intentions of the Light Skinned Race were made known. The
other would wait and greet the newcomers as brothers and sisters.

These Prophets also told the Anishnabe where they would travel and
how they would be guided to their ultimate destination. They told of a
sacred Megis shell that would appear and lead the way to a series of islands
where their journey would end. The final destination would be at a spot
where the food would grow on water. That area turned out to be the Great
Lakes region where pagwadjanomin or wild rice grows on water.

For those of us who were to stay and greet the Light Skinned Race
the 4th, 5th and 6th Prophets gave these warnings and prophecies.

If they (Light Skinned Race) come bearing nothing in their hands,
you must still be cautious for they may be smiling, but in reality they may
be wearing the face of Death. Do not accept them readily but wait and see.
You will know them by their actions.

If they come with the face of Brotherhood, you will become one
people. Their knowledge of the material world and your spiritual wisdom will
be joined together to create a mighty spiritual nation and you will be
joined by two other races, (we believe) Asian and African, to create the
mightiest nation of all.

If, on the other hand, the Light Skinned Race comes wearing the
face of Death then a great calamity will befall the people of this land.
Great suffering and pain will be visited upon your people. The very cup of
Life will almost be overturned.

You will know which face the Light Skinned Race is wearing when the
fish are dying and the water's unfit to drink.

The 6th Prophet warned that the Natural People of this land would be
attacked by a Light Skinned Race and that a great period of suffering would
ensue. He

[Native_American] Fw: This is Good!!!

2002-10-14 Thread BILL TAYLOR GG

A little Adult... but rather like the last
one but different.l..LOL..
 This is Good!!!
Are you tired of the mushy
"friendship" poems that always sound good but never actually come close to
reality? Well,
here is a "friendship" poem that really speaks to true friendship and
truth itself ...
 Friend,When you are
sad.. I will
help you plot revenge against the sorry bastard who made you
sad.
When you are blue. I'll try
to dislodge whatever is choking you.
 When you smile. I'll know
you finally got laid.
When you are scared. I will
rag you about it every chance I get.
 When you are
worried. I
will tell you horrible stories about how much worse it could be and
to quit
whining.
 When you are
confused. I
will use little words to explain it to your dumb ass.
 When you are
sick. Stay
away from me until you're well again. I don't want whatever you
have.
 When you
fall. I will
point and laugh at your clumsy ass.
This is my oath...! ..I pledge
'til the end.
Why you may ask? Because you're my friend!
Send this poem to ten of your
closest friends, or else you will have bad luck and go to hell, and be depressed
because you realize you only have 2 friends, and one of them is not speaking
to you right now anyway!
P.S. A friend will help you
move. A really
good friend will help you move a body.

[Native_American] Think!

Title: Blank

Each year, thousands of American Indian and Alaska Native patients
are diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia and aplastic
anemia. For most, their only hope for a cure is a transplant of healthy marrow
or blood stem cells from someone who shares their tissue type.
Because the characteristics of tissue type are inherited, the best
chance of finding a match is from a sibling. But only 1 percent of the
approximately 4 million volunteers in the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)
Registry are American Indians and Alaska Natives. Today, more than ever, there
is an urgent need for volunteer marrow donors from the American Indian and
Alaska Native communities. You could save the life of another Native person.
Keep the circle strong by joining the NMDP

Âgän-uni'tsï's Search For The Uktena - Cherokee

In one of their battles with the Shawano, who are all magicians, the
Cherokee captured a great medicine-man whose name was Âgän-uni'tsï, The
Ground-hogs' Mother. They had tied him ready for the torture when he begged
for his life and engaged, if spared, to find for them the great wonder
worker, the Ulûñsû'tî. Now, the Ulûñsû'tî is like a blazing star set in the
forehead of the great Uktena serpent, and the medicine-man who could possess
it might do marvelous things, but everyone knew this could not be, because
it was certain death to meet the Uktena. They warned him of all this but he
only answered that his medicine was strong and he was not afraid. So they
gave him his life on that condition and he began the search.

The Uktena used to lie in wait in lonely places to surprise its victims,
and especially haunted the dark passes of the Great Smoky mountains. Knowing
this, the magician went first to a gap in the range on the far northern
border of the Cherokee country. He searched and found there a monster
blacksnake, larger than had ever been known before, but it was not what he
was looking for, and he laughed at it as something too small for notice.
Coming southward to the next gap he found there a great moccasin snake, the
largest ever seen, but when the people wondered he said it was nothing. In
the next gap he found a greensnake and called the people to see the pretty
sälikwâ'yï, but when they found an immense greensnake coiled up in the path
they ran away in fear. Coming on to U'täwagûn'ta, the Bald mountain, he
found there a great diya'hälï (lizard) basking, but, although it was large
and terrible to look at, it was not what he wanted and he paid no attention
to it. Going still south to Walâsi'yï, the Frog place, he found a great frog
squatting in the gap, but when the people who came to see it were frightened
like the others and ran away from the monster he mocked at them for being
afraid of a frog and went on to the next gap. He went on to
Duniskwa`lgûñ'yï, the Gap of the Forked Antler, and to the enchanted lake of
Atagâ'hï, and at each he found monstrous reptiles, but he said they were
nothing. He thought the Uktena might be hiding in the deep water at
Tlanusi'yï, the Leech place, on Hiwassee, where other strange things had
been seen before, and going there he dived far down under the surface. He
saw turtles and water snakes, and two immense sun-perches rushed at him and
retreated again, but that was all. Other places he tried, going always
southward, and at last on Gahû'tï mountain he found the Uktena asleep.

Turning without noise, he ran swiftly down the mountain side as far as he
could go with one long breath, nearly to the bottom of the slope. There he
stopped and piled up a great circle of pine cones, and inside of it he dug a
deep trench. Then he set fire to the cones and came back again up the,
mountain.

The Uktena was still asleep, and, putting an arrow to his bow,
Âgän-uni'tsï shot and sent the arrow through its heart, which was under the
seventh spot from the serpent's head. The great snake raised his head, with
the diamond in front flashing fire, and came straight at his enemy, but the
magician, turning quickly, ran at full speed down the mountain, cleared the
circle of fire and the trench at one bound, and lay down on the ground
inside.

The Uktena tried to follow, but the arrow was through his heart. and in
another moment he rolled over in his death struggle, spitting poison over
all the mountain side. But the poison drops could not pass the circle of
fire, but only hissed and sputtered in the blaze, and the magician on the
inside was untouched except by one small drop which struck upon his head as
he lay close to the ground; but he did not know it. The blood, too, as
poisonous as the froth, poured from the Uktena's wound and down the slope in
a dark stream, but it ran into the trench and left him 'Unharmed. The dying
monster rolled over and over down the mountain, breaking down large trees in
its path until it reached the bottom. Then Âgän-uni'tsï called every bird in
all the woods to come to the feast, and so many came that when they were
done not even the bones were left.

After seven days he went by night to the spot. The body and the bones of
the snake were gone, all eaten by the birds, but he saw a bright light
shining in the darkness, and going over to it he found, resting on a
low-hanging branch, where a raven had dropped it, the diamond from the head
of the Uktena. He wrapped it up carefully and took it with him, and from
that time he became the greatest medicine-man in the whole tribe.

When Âgän-uni'tsï came down again to the settlement the people noticed a
small snake hanging from his head where the single drop of

[Native_American] Indin humor!!!

2002-10-14 Thread Softbreze45
 INDIAN WISDOM

It was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared.

Also, being a practical leader, after several days he got
an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National
Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"

"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold
indeed," the meteorologist at the weather service
responded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.

A week later, he called the National Weather Service
again. "Is it going to be a very cold winter?"

"Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's definitely going to be a very cold winter." The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find.

Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's going to be one of
the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked.

The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting wood like crazy."
