Keep in mind the B&K flying spot scanners use electromagnetic deflection CRTs.

I just got a B&K 1077B that has one of those purple phosphor tubes. I intend to
use while repairing TVs, but now you have given me ideas!

I have a variety of these. CRTs I mean, not the clock*. The best one is the
tube inside a video test pattern generator. The flying-spot scanner has very
fast phosphor that's purple. Too small for this application, though. OTOH, it
does have the test pattern with the Native American.

*I'd really like to have one of THESE clocks. Hint, hint.

I wouldn't worry about it. The tube generates enough heat in normal

[neonixie-l] Re: Japanese marking?

2020-02-10 Thread Jon

Thanks both of you - that fits with my original thought. It's not normal
for this type of tube to be marked like that, so I'm assuming this one was
part of a special lot or batch for some reason. There's nothing else about
it which seems particularly remarkable.

Just lost an auction on 2 Rodan CD42 nixie tubes, they wound up selling for
roughly 720 USD total:

Interesting tubes, they seem to only display the numbers 0-5 but are quite

(Sidenote: If anyone has any large Rodan nixies they want to sell or trade

Re: [neonixie-l] 1971 Nixie in a catalog

2020-02-10 Thread 'Ian Vine' via neonixie-l
Tandy (in the UK) was my introduction into electronics. Also a lesson is
correct part ordering.
I ordered the parts for a Babini nixie clock, late 70's.  TTL; 7400, 7490, 7441
and nixie tubes, can't remember the type. What I didn't check was that nearly
evetything was in packs of 2 or 3 and the prices were per part. Bill came to
£30+. OK in todaya terms for nixies not much. In late 70's, earing $1.50 for my
paper round, that was a real "oh shit" moment

I do remember getting one of these catalogs from Radio Shack back in the 70's;
pages and pages really neat stuff.

I had a catalog too from Radio Shack as they were also owned by Tandy. The
prices from Allied even then were not the greatest. They were really aimed at
businesses that could simply write off the cost as a business expense. The only
thing I ever bought from Allied were some special Chicago Miniature light bulbs
that I could not find anywhere else.
Looking at the price of the NL-8422, which is basically the same as an IN-12,
that $15.75 was about a days pay at minimum wage. I would have had to deliver a
lot of newspapers to afford just one. Of course even now I would spring for an
NL-7037 if I could find one. Two inch character height - wow!

Would seem an odd phosphor to use for radar displays then...maybe you had a
bad tube?

2020-02-10 Thread David Forbes
I made a clock with a 3JP12 back in 2002 when I was doing that. It lasted a
few weeks. That phosphor is rather delicate!

BTW I am working on getting back into the scope clock business, making a
laser cutter for the cases and using a Teensy to do the X-Y signal
generation. I've already written the code; its DACs are excellent for this
job.

Other tubes with P12 phosphor are 3JP12’s as far as I can tell. Some of the
datasheets for others say they were available as P12, but I rarely find them
for sale anywhere

While I think they are very interesting, I cannot imagine someone making
new ones or even that big a demand for them beyond a die-hard hobbyist.
Nixie's were hard enough to power at 170V using low voltage power supplies
but the NIMO's require over 1 kV IIRC. Plus all of the used ones I have
seen had burned phosphor so the tubes would definitely require something
like anti-poisoning or a "screen saver" to keep them from burning in as
well. I do not see the phosphor having the same longevity as mercury doped
Nixie tubes.

I had a catalog too from Radio Shack as they were also owned by Tandy. The
prices from Allied even then were not the greatest. They were really aimed
at businesses that could simply write off the cost as a business expense.
The only thing I ever bought from Allied were some special Chicago
Miniature light bulbs that I could not find anywhere else.

Looking at the price of the NL-8422, which is basically the same as an
IN-12, that $15.75 was about a days pay at minimum wage. I would have had
to deliver a lot of newspapers to afford just one. Of course even now I
would spring for an NL-7037 if I could find one. Two inch character height
- wow!

That’s right about the kanji meaning. It could refer to the lot or factory even.

But just maybe it is the first kanji in someone’s name (like 島田) who did the QC
on it? Pure conjecture, of course.

By the way this was fun (but nothing new probably):

Which model of CRT tube is that, as it is a nice size?

For that matter, what commonly available tubes had P12 phosphors as it is a
very pleasing colour (probably why it was used in later computer terminal
dispplays I guess...)

I do like the sharpness of the numerals on that clock, very cool.
