Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Nixie car gauges
Fabulous! If I ever do that I plan to have an IN13 as a progress meter for 0-60 timed runs in there somewhere An average speed mode ( with a “start averaging now” button ) would be great for some of the stretches of motorway that have average speed cameras here in the uk too. If you search ebay for "nixie" you often get people charging fairly silly money for an old seven segment LED calling them "vintage" and even "nixie tube" Occasionally I'll point out the error of calling a solid state device a "tube" to the vendor via the feedback button and I'd encourage anyone here, who feels so inclined, to help stop this reckless dilution of terminology. Re: [neonixie-l] Interesting document on Krypton-doped nixies,,,
Were the CRT calculators Busicom? One of those was the first thing I ever programmed... Punch cards with an instruction rate of ten per second! I seem to recall it had a magnetostrictive coil memory, an acoustic delay line using wire that behaves like piezo electric stuff does but with magnetism instead. Cheers, Robin. On 18 Apr 2014, at 13:28, John Rehwinkel jreh...@mac.com wrote: I do recall, however, that one of the Anita nixie calculators had a magnetic memory - a torsion delay line. It was kind of like a clock spring made out of stiff wire. An actuator would twist it at one end and the torsion wave would go round all the coils and appear at the other end some milliseconds later, where it was sensed and fed back to the beginning. So you could store data in it, like a very fast tape loop. I had a couple of calculators that used that kind of memory. One was a Singer/Frieden, I forget the make of the other one. They also used CRTs for display, with some clever logic to vector-trace seven segment digits onto the screen. They both showed a 3-level stack. Nifty devices, until my sister threw them out. I also had a nixie calculator. It was made back in the days when calculators were really expensive, so it had one math box, and four terminals. It could only make one calculation at a time, but since calculators spend most of their time waiting, this was apparently not much of a problem. It had a bunch of digits, Each terminal had 13 CD66 nixies for the display and a neon bulb for the - sign. It had old-style diode ROM, with boards covered with arrays of diodes in various patterns. It died when a power supply capacitor failed, making all the nixie displays strobe with an interesting rolling effect as the power line frequency beat with the multiplex frequency. I was young and poor, and stripped the poor thing for parts. I still have one of the display boards, minus one of its CD66 nixies. - John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups neonixie-l group. Re: [neonixie-l] IN-18 gone bad.
How about this for a ZIF design: The contacts take the form of tubes with slits cut axially all round leaving rings uncut top and bottom to form a sort of tubular cage with no roof or floor. If the top ring is twisted while the bottom one is held the tube will collapse to a hyperboloid cooling tower shape which would grip a pin. A suitable mechanism for the twisting would be an insulating collar (perhaps ceramic or hard resin) running round the top of the socket with gear teeth on the inner face that engage in either matching teeth in the top rings of the sockets or perhaps the top of the slits. So you would drop the tube in then twist the top of the socket 90 degrees or so... Some form of latching would be needed of course. Hope that makes some sort of sense... I'll try and knock up a diagram when I get to my computer as this needs getting out of my head properly now :) Cheers, Robin. On 24 Jan 2014, at 21:30, Terry S tschw10...@aol.com wrote: I don't think ZIF sockets are necessary -- too much complexity -- but a LIF (low insertion force) socket would be cool. Imagine a socket consisting of a solid round cylinder core, with spring tensioned contacts surrounding the core, that would press against the pins when the tube is placed over the core. Similar, non conducting dummy tensioned contacts could be on the opposite side of the pins, held in place by an outer ring. All contacts would be stamped concave to help position the tube. Some other mechanical retension method might be needed to secure the tube, perhaps a wire over the top like you've all seen in some equipment sockets. Who's got a 3D printer? The repeated removal/insertions caused the tube to leak at the pins. I still want to rotate the tubes, but I need to come up with a surrogate socket so I can swap the tubes without stressing the pins. A ZIF nixie socket! Now that would be quite a thing! That would also dodge the usual problem in home-made sockets of having the grippers both float and exert proper tension, by moving the tensioning function elsewhere. I like this project for several reasons, creative, father daughter project etc. Tim Laing Dear sir or madam: That is a very kind offer from you. I showed this to my daughter and she thought that she could find an old aged piece of wood from the beach a create a Season Tree. Spaces for the tubes could be carved out from the wood and with RGB LEDs, they could be illuminated on the bottom depending on the season. For Xmas, the LED colors would be green, white and red. For the 4th of July, red, white and blue, for Hallowen - all orange, etc. She would do the art work and I would help her with the electronics and programming side. Good daughter and father project.
