Re: Activate usb wifi adapter success or not ?

2014-12-23 Thread JingYuan Chen
Hello Greg Ed,

Thank you for response quickly !

Greg, you point out the things I forgot to check. There is a built-in
Ethernet Adapter, fxp0, in my laptop. I use it to complete NetBSD's install
process. It was assigned a default gateway, 192.168.1.1, and has a start
script as ifconfig.fxp0 in /etc. However, my access point's IP is also
192.168.1.1. For avoiding confuse, I delete /etc/ifconfig.fxp0 and comment
default gateway in /etc/rc.conf. Then reboot my laptop again. Great ! I can
surf Internet via my usb wifi adapter.

Ed, you give me a new thought about saving USB port for something else. My
laptop has PCMCIA device. But it had never been used. Although it is ten
years old, I don't want to lose it. This is my first laptop. I use it to
learn Linux and take some projects as freelancer. Actually, I want to do
something with it. But I have no idea now.

Regards,
ChingYuan

2014-12-22 Thread Greg Troxel

Run tcpdump and look at 'netstat -i' counters. It seems likely there
is some bug in the driver, but given how much is working it seems likely
that it is fixable (with code changes). In particular, it seems there
is some mishandling of short packets.

You might also get a USB/wifi adaptor that is known to work.

I am pretty sure that the

  Edimax EW-7811Un

is ok, and it's pretty inexpensive ($9 at amazon in the US). See
urtwn(4).

So far I've used many USB wifi adapters with NetBSD, but none have an
external antenna and I'm not sure they have good range compared to one
 with a real antenna.

This is for a project on my RPI machine, and I'll be using a powered
hub so it should have plenty of power available.

I recently used an Realteck RTL8188SU based 802.11n adapter made by EDUP
(model EP-MS150N) that had an external, detachable/replaceable antenna
and nice range. Uses the urtwn(4) driver. Worked fine except that it
didn't support HOST/AP mode. Have not looked to replace it but if I do
I'd look for another that uses the urtwn(4) driver, like the Realteck
RTL8188CU. If 802.11g is enough for you there are many more options.
I've found this site to be useful for determining chipsets, etc:

Good luck!
