the new kernel will be added and the old one will still be

Try type gconf or GConf in a terminal and see if you have a

(by default, you should have gconf-editor installed, I also
have gconfpref); or on the
Gnome menu look in Sistem - Configuration - Gnome
In the tree you see in gconf-editor (or gconfpref) select
Nautilus then, on the right,
Preferences; here you can find Always use browser.
GConf is a powerful tool for configuring Gnome, so use it
only if normal applications

But still the frontends are saying no sane device found.

I'm trying to make my HP3200c working; in /usr/src/sane-backends-1.0.9/tools, I type
./umax_pp -p -t 1
and the device is detected, all seems OK; but if I try xsane or scanimahe, the
response is no sane device found; if I add umax_pp option, I get invalid
argument... I changed umax_pp.conf (port 0x378) and dll.conf (umax_pp): there
something other I have to do...? Thanks all.

[newbie] Evolution

2002-10-13 Thread Smiley

Some months ago, Evolution became slower and slower, every time I download
messages from my accounts, the hard disk start to whirl and even if I manage to
receive all mails, at the end, the task take 20 times than supposed...
That's does only happen with Evolution (now 1.0.8, Mandrake 8.2, but even before
with 1.0.5 on 8.1)... Any hint about what's wrong...?

[newbie] Video card upgrade

2002-10-13 Thread Smiley

I'd like to buy a new video card, keeping my current cpu and mainboard; I can
also upgrade my K6 II 400 to a K6 II 533, anyway...
GeForce 2 400mx and 3D Prophet (Kyro II) are sold at good prices near my home :)
Do you think does it worth such kind of upgrade?
I have little interest in 3D, I'm looking for good performance on 2D...

and fix it rather just a clean install, but, as someone else mentioned,
not having printing is a show stopper. Good luck to everyone else still
 struggling with printing.

I'm having same trouble with Stylus Photo 810 on USB; what happen, I only
discovered using WWWCups, is that for some reason at a certain point the OS
doesn't see the USB device anymore and stop printing... but the work is still
qeued, and I have to delete that work; after that I stop and then start
again printer and the printer could start new works... but then it stops again
:D
Previously parallel prto didn't work, also; but with M 8.2 now is all okay...
For parallel port perhaps it was only a matter of upragde.

Evolution stores a lot of extra data with its emails (XML files and
similar); I found that, when I moved to Sylpheed Claws, the saving in hard
disk space was over 50 per cent. And SC is much faster ...

I'm also using Sylpheed (like I'm doing just now for *this* list ;), but for my

Thanks to who explained me /dev/shm (ach... I dleted the mail :( ); one
thing I wonder, anyway: when I type df (diskfree) on a terminal, I now
can see something like this:

Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdc5 1965344 1342184523324 72% /
none 63352 0 63352 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hdc7 1164028 1087732 17168 99% /home

/dev/scd0 369634369634 0 100% /mnt/cdrom

/dev/shm started appearing here a few weeks ago, after I tried the
Apply Filters option on KMail; before that, never saw it here... I'd
like to understand what's happened exactly and whay *now* /dev/shm is
listed... (you know, Windows is not exactly my fav OS because I'd like
an OS let me know what it's doing... :-)

[newbie] Initio SCSI card

1999-07-22 Thread Edward Smiley

I have been trying very hard to get Mandrake 6.0 to see my Initio 9100 SCSI card. Has
anyone gotten this to work? I have tried the disks for Red Hat 6.0 at the Initio
site. I have tried doing a modprove and adding it to my /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file. I
have also tried adding the alias command to my conf.modules file. All of these have
not worked. With the Red Hat disks it saw the SCSI card and the drive, but I get a
kernel panic when I try to load it. I think that has to do with going from Red Hat to
Mandrake. If anyone has any ideas on this can you please let me know because I really
need to have this drive running ASAP.

Thanks for reading!
