Is it metal on your 450, because the 82 650NH is metal, and gold on silver
if I recal. Size is probably the same as your tank, and should have a metal

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Headlight for 1983 CB650SC Nighthawk........

2016-04-08 Thread Allen Thomas
Sorry to hear your headlight got busted up. Before even considering
swapping to a round light I would do as much research as possible. I
wouldn't think the round would use the same fuel gauge, or gear indicator
sender units. As for mods you have a list there. Most people seem to just
clean them up and enjoy riding them. Maybe put on a Corbin seat, different
bars, or grips. IMHO spending $1500 + for shocks is wasting money on any
old bike. Brake conversions are costly, require allot of research and
simply are not needed on that bike. Just upgrade it to stainless lines and
HH metal pads. Pods and especially a MACs Exhaust are downgrades IMHO. You
did pick a great bike

Oh and bicycle shorts work great! They wik sweat away and breath nicely,
also some have built in jell pads. Wearing clothing that keeps you
comfortable in the conditions your riding in is probably the most important
thing to do on long rides besides hydration, and sun burn protection. I've
had to stop and buy a sweat shirt more than once because the temps dropped
in the evening, or the mountain air was colder.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk 250 CC Tour!

2016-03-18 Thread Allen Thomas
I usually get 15k or so from a chain and I never ride loaded or two up.
Replace the chain before, or plan on doing it somewhere in Kansas.
On a coast to coast trip I would plan on a daily chain lube and slop check,
and at least one cleaning. Both are very hard to do by yourself with the
tire on the ground. Buy the center stand it will be the most useful
investment for that bike.
I would also keep a card on me with emergency contacts for EMT personnel,
with any meds you are on also known allergies, maybe keep a copy on the
bike as well.

I would suggest at a minimum having enough tools to remove both tires, and
a maintenance stand (the bike may not be equipped with one). How many miles
are on the chan and sprocket set? He will experience accelerated chain wear
with a heavily loaded bike. It may make sense to put in a new set before
the trip. Also some sort of throttle lock, and highway pegs so that you can
stretch out. My longest ride was around 350 mile/day but others here
regularly go on long trips. I'm sure they will offer additional advice.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Nighthawk 550 exhaust mods. Possibilities?

2016-03-15 Thread Allen Thomas
+1 Same here you need a drastic change in exhaust to notice anything more
than an increase in noise. Tho only bike to have ever messed with where the
exhaust chànge had a noticeable change in performance was my friend's CBR.
On that bike he replaced basically a cut in half cherry bomb muffler with a
proper slip on Yoshi muffler. He definitely lost some top end, and gained
some midrange and general rideability.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Riders / Mechanics in Chicago?

2016-03-10 Thread Allen Thomas
Hi Kay, welcome to the group! One thing we like is pictures so snap a
couple of your new NH. Doing a chain and sprockets is fairly easy but you
will need some tools. I personally just use a cut off wheel to slice off
the old chain. So you will need either a die grinder or a dremel tool. The
rear sprocket nuts are on there tight so an impact gun is needed, a local
auto garage can hook you up here. Also a torque wrench is needed for
torquing on the new sprocket nuts. Lastly you need a chain press to rivet
the new Chain's master link. I do not trust the clip type links as I have
had one fail on me, (snapping a chain at speed can be devastating). But
that is an option to buying $100 chain press.
Also through Paul's website we have a Google map where you can pin your
location and look for other members near by.

I had a similar issue where I was getting some kind of grit in my Suzuki's
carbs bad enough to have and pull them twice. It was causing cylinders to

Javier yes you have a BT023 but I'm pretty sure it is still a 150. I'm

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Misfire when hot 84 650

2016-02-29 Thread Allen Thomas
Back firing through the carbs is a symptom of a super rich condition, which
also goes in line with runs worse when warm. Inconsistent spark will cause
a super rich mixture, and electrical components act up when hot. So since
it could be anything, rule out the obvious first. Get new plugs and check
your spark. Make sure thee airbox is free of debris and that the filter is
clean.
Check the carbs float levels. Check compression preferably a leak down test.

It is not uncommon for o-rings to shrink when you drain the carbs dry for
winter. Give it a day or two and it will stop. Also floats do sometimes
stick causing leaking from the overflow tubes. Try using a wooden dowel and
a hammer to tap them loose.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Seat padding Elevation

Most people just get a Corbin seat. Personally, I found them too hard for
my taste. But, Javier had his Corbin recovered with a gell pad, and a
little firm foam, and it is stellar. That would be my suggestion. Either
that or, go to a good upholsterer, and tell them what you want, and butt
test it while they shape the foam.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Anyone use handlebar risers?

2016-02-18 Thread Allen Thomas
What you can do is, get a piece of aluminum bar stock, and cut/glue it to
the handlebar stops. You will loose a bit of turning radius, but you will
only miss that when moving the bike around the garage. My brother did this
when he put superbike bars on his 92 NH 750, he used JB Weld, and has had
no issues for over 3 years now.

That hugger looks just like one I made for Jason's CBR. We didn't notice

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] What kind of dremel attachment?

2016-02-17 Thread Allen Thomas
I didn't throw in my 2¢ :-)
While they make little saw blades for a dremel, I would probably use the
fibreglass reinforced abrasive cut off wheel. Also, Xacto makes a mini back
saw. I use one for making model airplanes. They are super sharp with very
fine teeth and would make short work out of the cowl. Once you made the two
side cuts you could just score the top with a razor knife and snap off the
piece you need to remove. Good luck!

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Bike's RPMs float up and down by themselves

I did a bonehead and forgot to install the slide springs once, and it just
made the bike not want to rev up. I'd say you have an air leak, but maybe
float bowl fuel level? Have you lubricated the cables? What do the plugs

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Hello!

2016-02-10 Thread Allen Thomas
Thanks for your Input Kurt, I can only talk to what I have seen, it is good
to know you had a different experience.

Both of the MACs systems I have dealt with (painted and chromed) rusted
badly on the down pipes, and are loud too. The V Javier put on his bike
just blued the pipes (they are single walled pipe), but they didn't develop
any rust and seemed to have pretty decent chrome overall (not as good as
stock though). The sound at idle and low speed wasn't too loud, but if you
wind it up she will sing to you.

Javier, since you have been forced to store your NH outside the last two
winters have you had any rust issues with your V pipes?

easily. The V pipes have a nice and thick chrome plating that looks good

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Hello!

2016-02-08 Thread Allen Thomas
Jason has an 82 650NH it has a MACs system on it and it didn't need any
jetting, just some adjustment to the low speed mixture screws. We put a UNI
air filter in it as well. In fact we had to remove the airbox cover so that
it wasn't starving for air. The bike runs strong despite having a leaky
head gasket.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Oil leak

2016-02-08 Thread Allen Thomas
Since I don't know what bike you have, these are common places for a bike
to leak on the left side. If the bike is chain drive it could be a leaky
seal behind the front sprocket, another common leak point is around the
shift rod. Also look at the base of the cylinders for dampness as old bike
will sometimes start leaking at the base gasket once you start using them
again after sitting 30 years.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Start up problems for my friends Honda Nighthawk 450 '82.

2016-02-04 Thread Allen Thomas
So to verify what you are saying. You turn on the key and all of the lights
come on. You press the starter button and nothing, no clicks or anything.
You connected a car battery to your bike's battery and there was no affect.
Correct?

He wouldn't have lights if it was the main fuse. If you use a screw driver

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Anyone want to take a stab at how I should wire these horns?

2016-02-01 Thread Allen Thomas
I wish I could get in a 100 mile ride. Since I didn't get in hardly any
riding this last fall, it is taking its toll on my older than it should be
body. Riding a MC has fixed my bad neck, and shoulder, and keeps me
generally feeling better than I would otherwise. So here I am with a stiff
neck, and a bum shoulder that is bothering me, but it is still too cold,
and the roads are covered in salt. Now I know what my grandfather felt
like, he needed to ride a bicycle to keep his arthritis in check. So every
day even in his 80's he had to ride 20 miles, in the winter when he
couldn't ride everyday he was miserable.

The point of the relay is so that you don't fry your wiring harness, as the

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Cold Start Problem

2016-01-27 Thread Allen Thomas
First of all what is "cold" having it catch on one or two cylinders at
first is normal when your talking 40 or colder. Now normally on that model
you need full choke and do not touch the throttle to get them to cold start
at least if it is colder than about 65. So I would check to ensure there
are no mouse nests in the airbox and that your air filter is clean. Have
you rejetted the carbs?

The best part about a single side swingarm is chain maintenance and tire

-Zach, as previously suggested you can try snugging up the valve cover
bolts. but what I would do is take the cover off. clean the gasket and
check for cracks if it looks good then I would use a TINY bit of black
permatex Silicon sealant and use it to "glue" the gasket to the valve cover
then temporarilly bolt it back to the engine so it can harden and make a
good seal. Then pull the valve cover and make sure there is no extra
sealant any where use a razor blade to cut off any excess. Now paint the
bottom of the gasket with a thin layer of GREY NON HARDENING permatex, this
will allow you to remove the valve cover down the road without having to
scrape the top of the head, just a bit of brake/carb clean/acetone on a rag
will wipe the grey stuff off. Also the grey permatex will disolve with oil
so if there is any excess on the inside of the cover you don't have to
worry about it breaking loose and plugging your oil pickup like the silicon
stuff will do.

The shop manual says your front tire size is 110/90-16 and the rear is
130/90-16.

The crankcase vents into the airbox via a hose from the valve cover. It is
normal for a mixture of oil, water, and gas to collect in the airbox. There
is a drain hose on the airbox that goes down by the rear stand. Just pull
the plug on that hose to drain the airbox every so often.

for comparison the CBR 929,954, and 1000RR use dual 310mm rotors, and just

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: chain maintenance

2016-01-18 Thread Allen Thomas
+1 A high quality chain is definitely worth it, especially if you load up
your bike or ride 2 up. After having a shaft drive bike, I find I sometimes
forget to check the chain before going for a ride, and have come home with
a really dry chain a couple of times.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Tank Filter- Sprockets, Plugs and Filter

2016-01-17 Thread Allen Thomas
I would recommend that you do NOT install an inline filter. There is
little room for one and it can cause your fuel line to pinch, potentially
causing the bike to die at highway speeds. Or at least that is what it did
to me, the OEM line is moulded to prevent this. I use Emgo and HiFlo oil
filters and have never seen evidence of them deteriorating. I run a 16T on
my Suzuki but think a 17T would be too much, however the consensus with the
highway riders the tradeoff in acceleration is worth it. Front sprockets
are cheap get both and try for yourself. Always use air and blow out the
spark plug valleys before pulling plugs. Enjoy your new ride they are great
reliable, fun bikes. And welcome to the group.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: CB1100

2016-01-17 Thread Allen Thomas
+1 if you want to lock up the rear just adjust the brake peddle travel.
That drum brake has more than enough power to lock the tire at will. I
adjusted mine to have a ton of lever travel to prevent me from
inadvertently locking the brake while I was learning to ride. If your front
brakes are good enough you can actually slide the rear from shifting all
the weight off of it. Especially if you haven't put in heavier fork springs.

It could be like Graham says and it is an issue with the neutral switch,
along with an issue with the fuel sender in the tank. Also these bikes have
a weak fuse box that tends to get smoked, which can also cause issues like
this.

I just run the NGK plugs recommend for the bike. There is no appreciable
cost difference between brands so I just stick to OEM.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Replacement Plug Wires?

2016-01-04 Thread Allen Thomas
Sure no problem, here is a pic from when I converted my Suzuki to the lower
resistance Honda coils. Since the points were replaced with a Dyna S I
could use lower resistance coils for a hotter spark. Those wires are Accell
solid core wire and I used the NGK end caps. The bike starts easier now and
has been trouble free for 2 years now with this setup.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Replacement Plug Wires?

2016-01-04 Thread Allen Thomas
No need for OEM wires, just unscrew the retaining caps on the coils and the
wires pull right out. There is a spike on the coil that stabs into the
wire. So just transfer the o-ring from the old wire to the new, put a dab
of dielectric grease on the end then shove the wire into the coil then
screw in the retaining cap to the coil. Then just route your wires, cut
them and screw on the new resistor caps. It takes like 15 minutes to switch
out the wires.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Ross Jamison wants you to see this item at Amazon.com

Those are car wires. Motorcycle wires use resistor caps, should be 5 Ohm.
Those wires don't have any resistance and will burn up your coils.

I do them all for good measure but I'm a bit OCD. Definitely do the
connections associated with the charging system. Because those parts are
expensive and prone to fry if resistance gets too high.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Best place to buy ignition coils

2015-12-29 Thread Allen Thomas
Like all things electrical failure is caused by too high of resistance.
This is why I always recommend that one of the first things to do after
getting a bike running and determining if it will be a keeper is to clean
all electrical connections.
Neglecting to periodically replacing the spark plugs or running them with
too large of a gap, also bad wires can cause them to fail.
