That very README.rst contains non-ASCII characters which in turn throws a decoding error with Python 3 on Nix because I think this has to do with our setup.py wrapper that doesn't seem to recognize the right encoding when using compile(). [Nix-dev] LLVM, Clang and GCC 5 (C++ ABI Tags)
Hi all, I've been trying to fix the ISPC build, only to find that clang 3.8 does not support GCC 5's ABI Tags, which means that functions returning std::string may lead to compiler errors. LLVM/Clang 3.9 apparently does: http://llvm.org/releases/3.9.0/docs/ReleaseNotes.html#gcc-abi-tag I think this thread is also relevant: https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=23529 So I suppose the solution for ISPC will be to either switch to LLVM 3.9 or a clang using libcxx rather than libstdc++. What do you think? Have you seen other packages fail due to this? Cheers, Aristid ___ nix-dev mailing list nix-dev@lists.science.uu.nl http://lists.science.uu.nl/mailman/listinfo/nix-dev

Re: [Nix-dev] Non-Garbage-Collected Development Environments
nix-shell supports --add-root. The command should be something like this: nix-shell --indirect --add-root shell/deps (You should have a / in there to put all dependencies into a single directory, as it generates foo-1, foo-2... files.) [Nix-dev] Channels stuck at Nov 8th (Hydra low disk?)
Hi all, The channels seem stuck at 8th November (or 2nd in the case of the big channel). When I asked about this in the channel, Domen found that it was probably due to Hydra being out of disk space. However, nobody with the requisite access rights was around on IRC then, so I thought I'd send a message to the list so it can be found asynchronously. :) Cheers, Aristid ___ nix-dev mailing list nix-dev@lists.science.uu.nl http://lists.science.uu.nl/mailman/listinfo/nix-dev
Re: [Nix-dev] Nix 1.9 released
Very nice, thanks for the hard work! I'm especially excited about the nix-shell shebangs :) This should radically improve scripting on Nix. Cheers, Aristid Eelco Dolstra eelco.dols...@logicblox.com schrieb am Sa., 13. Juni 2015 01:17: Hi, I'm pleased to announce the availability of a new stable release of the Nix package manager. Release 1.9 can be found at http://hydra.nixos.org/release/nix/nix-1.9 and http://nixos.org/releases/nix/nix-1.9 In addition to the usual bug fixes, this release has the following new features: • Signed binary cache support. You can enable signature checking by adding the following to nix.conf: signed-binary-caches = * binary-cache-public-keys = cache.nixos.org-1:6NCHdD59X431o0gWypbMrAURkbJ16ZPMQFGspcDShjY= This will prevent Nix from downloading any binary from the cache that is not signed by one of the keys listed in binary-cache-public-keys. Signature checking is only supported if you built Nix with the libsodium package. Note that while Nix has had experimental support for signed binary caches since version 1.7, this release changes the signature format in a backwards-incompatible way. • Automatic downloading of Nix expression tarballs. In various places, you can now specify the URL of a tarball containing Nix expressions (such as Nixpkgs), which will be downloaded and unpacked automatically. For example: □ In nix-env: $ nix-env -f https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs-channels/archive/nixos-14.12.tar.gz -iA firefox This installs Firefox from the latest tested and built revision of the NixOS 14.12 channel. □ In nix-build and nix-shell: $ nix-build https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/archive/master.tar.gz -A hello This builds GNU Hello from the latest revision of the Nixpkgs master branch. □ In the Nix search path (as specified via NIX_PATH or -I). For example, to start a shell containing the Pan package from a specific version of Nixpkgs: $ nix-shell -p pan -I nixpkgs= https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs-channels/archive/8a3eea054838b55aca962c3fbde9c83c102b8bf2.tar.gz □ In nixos-rebuild (on NixOS): $ nixos-rebuild test -I nixpkgs=nixpkgs= https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs-channels/archive/nixos-unstable.tar.gz □ In Nix expressions, via the new builtin function fetchTarball: with import (fetchTarball https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs-channels/archive/nixos-14.12.tar.gz) {}; … (This is not allowed in restricted mode.) • nix-shell improvements: □ nix-shell now has a flag --run to execute a command in the nix-shell environment, e.g. nix-shell --run make. This is like the existing --command flag, except that it uses a non-interactive shell (ensuring that hitting Ctrl-C won’t drop you into the child shell). □ nix-shell can now be used as a #!-interpreter. This allows you to write scripts that dynamically fetch their own dependencies. For example, here is a Haskell script that, when invoked, first downloads GHC and the Haskell packages on which it depends: #! /usr/bin/env nix-shell #! nix-shell -i runghc -p haskellPackages.ghc haskellPackages.HTTP import Network.HTTP main = do resp - Network.HTTP.simpleHTTP (getRequest http://nixos.org/;) body - getResponseBody resp print (take 100 body) Of course, the dependencies are cached in the Nix store, so the second invocation of this script will be much faster. • Chroot improvements: □ Chroot builds are now supported on Mac OS X (using its sandbox mechanism). □ If chroots are enabled, they are now used for all derivations, including fixed-output derivations (such as fetchurl). The latter do have network access, but can no longer access the host filesystem. If you need the old behaviour, you can set the option build-use-chroot to relaxed. □ On Linux, if chroots are enabled, builds are performed in a private PID namespace once again. (This functionality was lost in Nix 1.8.) □ Store paths listed in build-chroot-dirs are now automatically expanded to their closure. For instance, if you want /nix/store/…-bash/bin/sh mounted in your chroot as /bin/sh, you only need to say build-chroot-dirs = /bin/sh=/nix/store/…-bash/bin/sh; it is no longer necessary to specify the dependencies of Bash. • The new derivation attribute passAsFile allows you to specify that the contents of derivation attributes should be passed via files rather than environment variables. This is useful if you need to pass very long strings that exceed the size limit of the environment. The Nixpkgs function

Re: [Nix-dev] A few questions from a NixOS newbie.
If you want to do a lot of changes or always want to use the newest versions of things without waiting for them to appear in the channel (which may take a few days), you probably want to use a checkout instead of the channel. This can be achieved with an environment variable: $ echo $NIX_PATH nixos=/home/aristid/nixpkgs/nixos:nixpkgs=/home/aristid/nixpkgs:nixos-config=/etc/nixos/configuration.nix (This will not automatically affect nix-env, though it will affect nixos-rebuild.) If you want to get any changes into the official repo, just use a GitHub pull request on this repo: https://github.com/nixos/nixpkgs Also, do not use i686-linux, there's no good reason to do so and it gets far less attention from most developers. And installing glibc-2.17 with nix-env will NOT cause any other packages to actually use it, you have to change the package's dependency with { glibc = pkgs.glibc_2_17 } or so. Please excuse that I only answered some of your questions. Cheers, Aristid 2014-04-21 14:23 GMT+02:00 Mateusz Kowalczyk fuuze...@fuuzetsu.co.uk: Greetings, I have been planning to move to NixOS for quite a few months now but only yesterday I finally clobbered my old /. Like many others, I'm a Haskeller looking for a better development environment than we can sanely achieve with cabal sandboxes. Anyway, to the point. I have a few questions and I fear that I've been pestering the IRC channel a bit too much. Unfortunately there isn't enough information on the web yet for me to solve it, and there are many deadlinks and unanswered IRC question which doesn't help my searches. For reference, I'm moving from Gentoo. In no particular order: * How do I get onto a channel that uses nixpkgs? When I file a bug with a package, it fortunately tends to get fixed up quite fast but I do not know how I'm meant to then receive it. I find various URLs of nix-channel --add on the net but things like what's shown on the main Getting Nixpkgs page don't work: [root@lenalee:~]# nix-channel --add http://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable [root@lenalee:~]# nix-channel --update downloading Nix expressions from `http://releases.nixos.org/nixpkgs/nixpkgs-14.04pre42251.552d66c/nixexprs.tar.xz'... % Total% Received % Xferd Average Speed TimeTime Time Current Dload Upload Total SpentLeft Speed 0 00 00 0 0 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 0 unpacking channels... This 'nixos' is not explained anywhere as far as I can tell! My guess is that it simply names the channel locally so that it's easy to refer to, is that correct? By the way nix-channel --add http://nixos.org/channels/nixos-unstable nixos seems to work but is probably not what I want (getting few-minutes-old fixes from nixpkgs git repository). * The nix packages don't seem to be versioned in any way. On Gentoo, I could inspect the software in the tree: I could check the version of the software itself, and the version of the e-build. An example use case is if the software fetch source dies: we need to update the e-build and bump its version but the software version stays the same. Is there an equivalent in NixOS? * What is the proper way to integrate own packages into the tree? Yesterday I found it necessary to try and package a (proprietary ;( ) blob which amongst some other things needs patchelf c. What I did was to fork then clone nixpkgs and written the package in appropriate directory. I now don't know how to work with this repository so that the rest of the system sees it. What I did was cd to the repository and then use nix-env -f . -i mypackage but I fear that as soon as I go back to using nix-env -i outside of that repository, nix will be confused: it had newer packages a second ago and now it's back to old! * In my aforementioned package, there's a binary that I expected to be able to run after nix-env -i. Re: [Nix-dev] disk setup for nixos installation
I believe Aszlig had actually done some work on automated partitioning for Nixops, but I'm not sure how far from ready for primetime it is. Cheers, Aristid 2013/8/18 Shea Levy s...@shealevy.com Hi Tim, Generally, in NixOS we achieve effects outside of the store in a two-phase process: We have derivations to create data (config files, systemd units, shell scripts, etc.) in the store that represent the end state we want (including a master activation script that joins all the rest into a whole), and then a particular system state is transitioned to by running the top level script. Generally, these derivations are generated from a declarative specification made possible by a module system implemented purely in nix. We work hard to make the generated scripts idempotent, to make it possible to transition arbitrarily between system configurations, to make the system behave identically (for the relevant aspects) if a given system configuration is switched to after having previously used thousands of different configurations compared to if a system is freshly installed with that configuration. We try to minimize the chances of inconsistent system state. But generally these things are much harder to achieve when considering an operating system as a whole rather than an immutable file store, so guarantees are obviously less stringent than what we can offer in the nix store itself. Regarding your initial question: Already, we have NixOS modules to describe the partitions/filesystems in use. There's no fundamental reason why that information couldn't be used to automatically partition and install filesystems, at least in simple cases, but currently it is only used to manage fstab, determine which filesystems to boot from the initrd, etc. IMO an automated partitioning system based on a NixOS config would be an awesome addition. Cheers, Shea On 8/17/13 7:22 AM, Tim Barbour wrote: I would like to be able to boot from nixos installation media, then do automated partitioning, LVM setup and filesystem creation, then let nixops do the rest. Does nix / nixos provide any existing mechanisms for doing this ? I am an experienced functional programmer (Haskell, not nix), but I don't understand how to do IO in nix. Perhaps I should be modelling the disk setup as the building of some derivations, but such derivations would not produce a result in the nix store. If I made them produce a result in the store, then the disk setup would be a side-effect, and not referentially transparent. I get the feeling that this is outside the scope of nix. PulseAudio is enabled, but it also didn't work before I enabled it. The most curious line would be the one with AL lib: oss.c:179 to me. [Nix-dev] Conflict between ghc-7.4.1-linkdir and haskell-env-ghc-7.4.1
Hi Nix list, I use haskellPackages_ghc741.ghcWithPackage to install my GHC (as Andres Löh explained to me), and had a conflict between ghc-7.4.1-linkdir and haskell-env-ghc-7.4.1 when trying to add a new package to the configuration of ghcWithPackage: Collission between `/nix/store/ifjid0cil62kh5z6dbqh0vwag61j1hng-haskell-env-ghc-7.4.1/bin/cpphs' and `/nix/store/g045kraz73m00c56a76i4zff5phg6i1i-ghc-7.4.1-linkdir/bin/cpphs'. Suggested solution: use `nix-env --set-flag priority NUMBER PKGNAME' to change the priority of one of the conflicting packages. I could successfully resolve this by giving haskell-env-ghc-7.4.1 a lower (winning) priority, but I also noticed that the two cpphs binaries were exactly the same. Is this supposed to be this way? [Nix-dev] Mixing cabal and Nix? Or: Best way to install development versions of Haskell packages?
The mailing list doesn't seem to like 100 KB attachments, so here's a link instead: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6149885/agda-install-20120309.txt The message that I tried to sent is following. -- Forwarded message -- From: Aristid Breitkreuz arist...@googlemail.com Date: 2012/3/9 Subject: Re: [Nix-dev] Mixing cabal and Nix? Or: Best way to install development versions of Haskell packages? To: Peter Simons sim...@cryp.to Cc: nix-dev@lists.science.uu.nl Hi Peter, 2012/3/9 Peter Simons sim...@cryp.to Hi Aristid, Am I rightly suspecting that it isn't possible to mix cabal and Agda, even just for development versions of some packages? Cabal and Nix work together just fine. What doesn't work, though, is mixing Haskell software that's been installed via Nix and Haskell software that's been installed by other means, say the native package manager of your host OS. Maybe that is what you've been doing? I installed cabal from nix: $ which cabal /home/aristid/.nix-profile/bin/cabal (I also have a non-nix cabal, but as which indicates, the Nix version is used.) $ cabal install --disable-documentation Where did you get that Cabal binary from? And what compiler is it using for the build? (If in doubt, please run the command with '-v' to enable more verbose output and post the results here.) I have attached the results of trying cabal install with -v again, after first cleaning all the object files. You should make sure that the 'ghc' command in your $PATH is the binary provided by the Nix package ghc-7.4.1-wrapper. Any other binary is not going to find any of the Haskell packages that you installed via Nix. Decoding the symlinks, it uses the following GHC, which should be right: /nix/store/c1v602d9142bw82jxn27vd9ga0q0gj6v-ghc-7.4.1-wrapper/bin/ghc The problem however, seems to happen with the following command: /nix/store/c1v602d9142bw82jxn27vd9ga0q0gj6v-ghc-7.4.1-wrapper/bin/ghc-pkg Weirdly, it _does_ seem to use Cabal (as opposed to cabal-install) from the GHC 7.0 version. But that doesn't seem to be the problem in this case? Do you have an idea what is going on? Thanks! Re: [Nix-dev] Mixing cabal and Nix? Or: Best way to install development versions of Haskell packages?
OK, I got it to work (or so it seems right now). Essentially, I had to pass --force to ghc-pkg. But because there is no flag for cabal install to pass that, I did this: $ runghc Setup.hs copy $ runghc Setup.hs register --gen-pkg-conf=Agda.conf $ ghc-pkg --user register Agda.conf Is there a better way? :) Aristid 2012/3/9 Peter Simons sim...@cryp.to Hi Aristid, Am I rightly suspecting that it isn't possible to mix cabal and Agda, even just for development versions of some packages? Re: [Nix-dev] Mixing cabal and Nix? Or: Best way to install development versions of Haskell packages?
When I use cabal by hand, I don't get a clean Nix environment of course. Is the best way to write a Nix package for the development version of Agda? Note that I figured out a way to get it to work by hand, by passing --force to ghc-pkg (in my last email, when I copied the command the --force got clipped off, but I really had to call it with --force). If I don't use the cabal binary but rather Setup.hs for configure, I do get Using Cabal-1.14.0 compiled by ghc-7.4 But it still finds the system tools like /usr/bin/pkg-config. Either way, it doesn't work without me passing --force to ghc-pkg. Note that if I look at the way Nix packages are installed by the cabal.mkDerivation thing, it also passes --force to ghc-pkg. Aristid 2012/3/9 Peter Simons sim...@cryp.to Hi Aristid, the build log says: Using Cabal-1.10.2.0 compiled by ghc-7.0 That doesn't seem right. That library almost certainly didn't come from Nix. Is it possible that your ~/.cabal and/or ~/.ghc directories contained remnants of earlier builds that were performed with the system compiler? Could you please remove both ~/.cabal and ~/.ghc, and then try the build again in a clean environment? Also, the build log shows several other tools that were used from the system, i.e.: Using ar found on system at: /usr/bin/ar Using gcc version 4.6.1 found on system at: /usr/bin/gcc Using haddock version 2.9.2 found on system at: /usr/bin/haddock Using ld found on system at: /usr/bin/ld Using pkg-config version 0.26 found on system at: /usr/bin/pkg-config Using ranlib found on system at: /usr/bin/ranlib Using strip found on system at: /usr/bin/strip Using tar found on system at: /bin/tar I don't believe that those tools are causing the errors that you're seeing, but still it's a little worrying, especially use of /usr/bin/pkg-config. Hi Alexander, I am using the development version of Agda which is not on Hackage yet. That's why I did not use cabal2nix. :-) Cheers, Aristid 2012/3/9 Alexander Foremny alexanderfore...@googlemail.com When I use cabal by hand, I don't get a clean Nix environment of course. Is the best way to write a Nix package for the development version of Agda? Hello, there is cabal2nix which works very well. I usually run cabal2nix to get a Nix expression for a package which is on Hackage but not in Nix' repositories and then use nix-env to install it. Note that cabal2nix can handle URLs to .cabal files and that Hackage provides those URLs on the package's page at the bottom. Regards Alexander Foremny Am 9. [Nix-dev] Mixing cabal and Nix? Or: Best way to install development versions of Haskell packages?
Hi Nix list, and especially the Haskell+Nix crowd, I tried installing the development version of Agda with GHC 7.4.1 (the released version does not work with 7.4), by first installing all dependencies with nix and then using cabal install just for Agda. Am I rightly suspecting that it isn't possible to mix cabal and Agda, even just for development versions of some packages? What should I do instead?
