Re: NPNY: Last Nights Setlists Thanks to DocFB.com

2009-03-29 Thread Andrew Stanger
Cool - glad he posted all three. So cool how it was three different
bands. Wonder how long each show was, as he had to get to the next
one. That would be a cool tour, Prince playing with three bands. If he
only added the Revolution.

Would love to know what the Bria/Tamar story was that he told during
the second show...

NPNY: Lotus and Leno

2009-03-27 Thread Andrew Stanger
On LotusFlow3r now, all the music videos are full. Wait till after the chest
bump in chocolate box :)

Also, I really liked the two Leno performances. Especially Dreamer - one of
the songs I really like from the new albums.

Cool. Were you there? Wondering if he played any songs after the

Also - did anyone else catch the target commercial with dreamer last
night? Not sure if there was one the first night.

And has Bria ever performed live with him? So weird. Surprised we

Thanks for sending - didn't know about the show - will probably go.
Seen him a few times (including his show in prospect park when prince
and the band came out for the encore). If you haven't seen him, would
definitely recommend it.

Also - anyone watch MJs weird press conference at the O2 yesterday.

NPNY: 21 Nights Afterparty Reivew

2008-10-11 Thread Andrew Stanger
I put this up on HQ and wanted to post here too...

All the reports are great. I was at the aftershow. Anything happen after
NPS? I took all the songs down on the my iphone but see setlists already up.
Some random notes...

Prince came out wearing black pants and a white sweater with a long white
scarf. Started with glasses but took them off early. For the second half -
black pants and orange blouse-like shirt with a big necklace - might be the
same one from the first show.

It was very organized for a prince aftershow. I was worried as it was my gfs
first show and I didn't want her to have a bad experience. We got there at
11. Took a little bit of time to check our name and get a wristband (no
tickets :(
Waited in line - got to chat with Z for a bit.
We got let into the hotel at 12:25 or so.
Up the elevator. Out into the bar.
This was the only bad queue - waiting by the bar crushed a little to get
through one door into the small room with the stage. Only about 15 mins
though.
Room was packed but breathable.

Completely agree with Z about the setlist vs actually being there. It was an
amazing show., Probably the best aftershow I've been to. Did go to irving
plaza a few years ago with Larry and Chaka that was great and didn't go to
the World one during ONA so that one might have been better. The covers were
all great - many I haven't heard at all and many I haven't heard prince do
live. He did a good amount of his own songs - Purple Rain seemed a little
out of place with such a rock and then rb show but he seems to have to do
it for folks. 3 hours of prince is amazing. And hearing him do Shhh (one of
my favs) and then the time/Sheila songs were awesome. That was a highlight
for me - hearing prince cover a prince band and do the bird and jungle love.
He was in a great mood - maybe best I've ever seen, jamming, dancing, funk
face, funny faces, interacting with the crowd.

thanks

 Subject: NPNY: Prince Weekend

A quick overview of my Prince Weekend...

Friday night went to the yankees game (have season tix). They usually do a
music choice where the players are asked to choose between 3 songs by one
artist. On Friday night they showed an old one with Prince - I believe the
three songs were Kiss, LGC, and Raspberry Beret. Let's Go Crazy won. The
Yankees on the other hand...not so much. Not sure if they showed again on
 Sat.

Sat - went to a bachelor party at a racetrack in NJ during the day and
represented with my True Funk Soldier shirt. Bet on a horse that bucked
off
its jockey within thirty seconds. Not a good day at the races for Andy.

Night - represented with my vintage Purple Rain tour shirt and went to BB
Kings to see Days of Wild. First time I ever saw them and they were pretty
good. The version of Get Off - a little fast but ended with a great
version
of DMSR and Turn Me Loose. They announced an after party at Bitter End at
 1pm with a special guest.

After the show - headed over to the Zipper Factory for the Burlesque show.
The Zipper Factory restaurant, bar area, and theatre were really cool. In
a
somewhat run down area but get past that and check it out. The show was
really, really cool. Never been to a Burlesque show before. The dance
interpretations to prince's music were great, the DJ spun a lot of related
artist stuff (Mutiny!), and a singer performed the Cross and Nothing
Compares 2 U which became a sing along. Best act of the night...Little Red
Corvette - girl started out dressed as a mechanic and made good use of a
wrench and a car battery with jumper cables. And just in case they're kids
on the list - I'll leave it at that.

That ended close to 1 or so. With a prince dance party following. My
friend
Ally and I ran out and went down to the Bitter End. Got there a little
after
2pm. As we walked in...Mayte and 3 other folks (assuming one guy was her
boyfriend) were walking out. I stared at her wondering if that was really
here and a guy walking out with her said - Yep - that's her. I didn't
talk to her just waved when she looked back inside before walking away. I
should've got a picture with her on my phone, especially as I was wearing
a
Prince shirt. Well too bad. I thought she might have been the special
guest
but I asked the last singer of DOW and he had no clue she was
there...Crazy!

 That's it...

 Andy

shows with all the bad press.

The first few songs were good and then it just seemed to spiral

the time. Here's the report I sent to my friends after the
show.Well, for

my
money, I got my money's worth. It certainly didn't suck at all.
Now, at

this
point, my
expectations were lessened, but I don't think they were that
monstrous

having seen him on the awards show last year. All in all, he was
very solid for the first half hour, came in and out with the band for
next half hour and the band played another 30 minutes after that. We
heard a lot of great tunes including If You Want me to Stay and
Hot
Fun in the Summertime and a smokin' version of Sing a Simple
Song. I

thought the band was very good and not nearly as confused as you had
mentioned. They watched Sly and picked it up when he dropped back.
All
in all the show (which didn't start until 12 am) cooked all the way
up

to 1:15 and the band looked like it wanted to stay on longer, though
Sly certainly didn't have the stamina. Doing a little internet
research

this morning, I am listening to a live show from '68 at the Fillmore
East that lasted only 53 minutes. I'm also noting that Sly's shows
back
in the day started notoriously late and he was generally late or
didn't

show at all, so it seems we did see vintage Sly.

http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/sly-and-the-family-stone/580-6533.html

Lastly, though the price was high, I think it was proportionate to
the
quality of the act in the size of the venue. Legitimately, he could
have
easily filled the Beacon at $45 and that would have just sucked.
I'd rather
pay twice as much to see him in a small club like B B King's. The
crowd

really enjoyed it and despite the long wait for the show, everybody
generally walked out very happy.Moral of the story, if you do see
Sly, go

to
the second show.

You mean baby knows? I like both of those songs but again my opinion.

We all have music styles we like. And styles of Prince music we like.
I really haven't liked his ballads on the last few albums - I want another
adore, insatiable, do me baby. I don't think Call My Name, Satisfied, Future
Baby Mamma really live up to it.

My favorite song of the last few albums is Black Sweat which some of you
probably hate - but I love the falsetto, straight funk groove Prince.

Well if it is a cute, single female she can visit my apt. Tons of

Maybe the hard rock in times sq has some prince items. Or some of the
record stores in the village might have stuff.

Or go to the groove on a fri or sat. Raj usually covers some prince.

Oh my God. Wendy, is the Water Warm Enough?

Here I was after reading the reviews of last nights show not
looking forward to this one at all. It was like night and day. If
I miss anything now, it is because I am in a hurry but will update
 it later.

D.J. Rashida was spinning in the Blossom room, which now has a big
Purple 3121 sign which seems engulfed in the curtains behind the
stage. The screens were all playing the Verizon commercial on a
 loop.

Around 12:49 the band starts playing. This was incredible. So
incredible in fact, I know the set list will speak volumes 2 u more
 so then my words right now;

 1. Footprints (Prince came out towards the end off stage left and
watched and then clapped at the end)
 2. Renato solo
 3. What A Wonderful World performed by Mike Phillips
 4. Somewhere Here On Earth (Entered stage right nice new ballad off
of Planet Earth along with lighting effects of space.)
 5. Take Me With U (Full version 1st Hohner, then blue strat)
 6. Guitar (This fricken rocked and everyone even in the VIP's
 started getting up and Dancing.
 7. 7 (short)
 8. Come Together (W/ Shelby J. on lead n Prince backing up)
 9. Beyonce cover (Will fix later when I remember what it was or
 someone posts, Shelby J singing)
 10. It's Over (Shelby J)
 11. The Long Winding Road
 12. Musicology
 13. Give It To Me Baby (Rick James cover)
 14. Brick House
 15. 77-9311 (hot bass solo)
 16. The Jam (Numbers 13-16 were short versions but great jamming)
 17. Play That Funky Music (Sung by Nikka Costa!!!)
 18. Everybody Got Their Something (Duet w/Prince Nikka Costa
singing in2 same mic. Nikka bowed 2 Prince several times after this
 before leaving the stage.)
 19. Get Funky (Maceo Parker Prince goes into crowd and grabs someone
by the hand. That someone is...
 Wendy Melvoin!!!

 Acoustic set W/Wendy Melvoin

 20. Little Red Corvette (It first sounded like Sometimes It Snows
In April but wasn't. This was amazing, with Prince grabbing Wendy's
hand a few times and them looking at each other. Prince proclaims
this is Karaoke night with Prince Wendy.)
 21. Raspberry Beret (full version)
 22. Elephants Flowers
 23. Girl(!!! Not the Time Version, but the P The Revolution B-
 side! Full Version)
 24. Who Is He And What Is He To You.
 25. Reflection
 26. Sometimes It Snows In April. (At the end of the song, Wendy
stood up and kissed Prince. Awesome. Wendy switched acoustic
models several times which was cool. It was heard to hear her in
the mix but still an incredible performance. End of Acoustic Set.)

 27. Cream (Prince said I am gonna play the hits til I wear you
 out. Full version.)
 28. U Got The Look
 29. If I Was Ur Girlfriend
 30. Pink Cashmere
 31. 1 Kiss At A Time (ends with one of Prince's screams.)
 32. Black Sweat
 33. Kiss
 34. Let's Go Crazy
(The chants of We Want More It Ain't Over fill the place as Prince
is standing above where the fans are in the back and watching the
crowd. Main Show Over. Started at 12:53 Ended at 2:51)

 After show

 1. Mike Phillps Intro of the band
 2. Pass The Peas
 3. Chicken
 4. Shake Everything You Got (Prince enters stage thru crowd which
was sitting with his sunglasses in his mouth and in a white suit
grabbing the Hohner. Less then 5 minutes later ,the entire crowd is
around the stage as the place is just vibing. At the end he hugs a
guy stage left and goes back to the next song.)
 5. Sweet Thing (Shelby J. on vocals and guitar blistering by Prince.
 Kills it.)
 6. Love Is A Losing Game (Again, great mind blowing guitar solos all
 over this Amy Winehouse Cover.)
 7. Thank U.(Sly Stone Cover)

NPNY: Prince at 3121 in LV

So I can't believe the prices for Prince in Las Vegas this month.

Tickets went from $125 to $175 to $250. I guess the Rio is trying to

From Philadelphia Daily News:

Best Super Bowl halftime advanced news conference ever yesterday.
Usually a bleary eyed performer sits and thanks sponsors and such. But
Prince, who will headline the Super Bowl XLI extravaganza, apparently
did not want to talk. So he sang and played instead.

After some yada yada from Pepsi officials, Prince and his
entire band , including backup singers, took the stage for three songs.
Prince faked out reporters, walking to the mike and saying that contrary
to rumor, he was going to answer questions. Then, when somebody tried to
ask one, he launched into Johnny B Goode.

That was followed by Anotherloverholenyohead and Get On
The Boat. It was an unusual scene. Usually, reported don't stand up and
dance at news conferences, unless of course, Andy Reid is laying down
the groove.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Prince unveiled a low-production but high-energy show as he
debuted a new weekly casino gig, while giving no indication that he plans to
become the next Wayne Newton.
Prince will perform shows for the next several Friday and Saturday nights in
the 3121 club at The Rio casino-hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip.
The show Friday included an even mix of classics and new material, guitar
solos, soulful ballads and funk. His racy hits, such as Cream and Kiss,
were a contrast to the tamer songs released since the star became a
Jehovah's Witness.
You don't have to be dirty to be sexy, Prince advised the audience, before
launching into a sweet love song. Let me show you.
The move to Las Vegas surprised fans who have dubbed the star _ now more
than 20 years past his megahit album and movie Purple Rain _ a pop, funk
and soul innovator. Las Vegas, a place once known for showcasing stars in
the twilight of their careers, wasn't expected.
But organizers and bandmates say the man who once changed his name to a
soundless symbol is simply taking his own tack again.
I think he wants to bring a new element to Vegas; that's the whole point,
to bring a new, fresh vibe, said Maya McClean, a Prince spokeswoman and
half of the back-up group performing with the star, The Twinz.
The shows are expected to run a couple of months before the group goes on
tour, McLean said.

NPNY: Prince vs Ebay

2006-11-07 Thread Andrew Stanger
Prince is f***ing crazy. I bought two tickets to each show in Las Vegas.
My friend can't go anymore so I put them up on ebay for
$140/ticket...the 125 plus the tm charges. Had a bid on each and some
watchers and the auction was going to end today at around 11:30am. So I
get this email this morning. See below. What the f*** gives him the
right to take the tickets off of ebay. Most of the other ones are gone
too...if you know anyone that needs a ticket to either show, let me
know. I contacted the person that bid on both so hopefully she still
wants one or both. CRAZY

RE: NPNY: WNPNY Podcast?

2006-10-25 Thread Andrew Stanger
I think this is an awesome idea and would love to participate/help etc.
Don't know how good my radio voice is being that singing prince songs in
my car for ten years equals me squeaking and cracking like a teenager.

My brother has a podcast called Mac Attack that is pretty popular so I
can always ask him for advice.

I think every two weeks or monthly is good, any more and it gets tough
to keep up.

I think you have everything below that I could think of. The only
addition would be adding some related artist music or new artist music.
One of the things I like about Joe's show and some local rb bands I see
(one being Carlton J Smith at BB Kings) is that they turn me on to new
music.

Cool!

Andy

Moderator: You actually have a pretty good voice. Its mine that I worry
about. People always say I have a nice voice, but I cringe everytime I
hear it :-P

New and Related Arist recommendations reviews are a good idea. -Derek

Subject: NPNY: WNPNY Podcast?

I am big fan of the Firefly/Serenity podcast. They are very well done
and remind alot of the Online Prince community before Prince discovered
the internet.

I have been kicking around the idea of starting one about Prince for a
few months and I need some input.

Here is quick outline of what I was considering:
- 30-60 Minutes bi-weekly or monthly
- News/Rumors
- Album Review Roundtable [where 3 or 4 other join me]
- Concert Reviews and Information
- Associated Artist - News, Information
- Song Analyst
- Listeners Submissions [Prince themed articles, peotry, etc.]
- Emails/Voicemails Feedback

What do you think? Anything you would add take away? Anyone interested
in contributing, I am probably going to need a co-host for this. Don't
like
the idea of talking to myself Hehe [Anyone want to audition?]

Go check out www.3121.com, there's a montage of acts that I am assuming
Prince will want to book or has booked for his club run in Vegas.

Pretty impressive line-up. Can anyone ID all of 'em?

NPNY: Diddy Album

2006-10-13 Thread Andrew Stanger
Hi all,

I listen to Diddy's album on MTV overdrive and there is a song called
Special Feeling that has a prince beat and screams like feel to it.
The album is bad to me...I know you're all not surprised.

Also - I noticed today that the NPGMC site took down the logo that was

in black on their homepage. This is a very weird deal going on.

NPNY: Prince and Maceo

2006-06-14 Thread Andrew Stanger
Anyone going to see Maceo tonight (Irving Plaza) or tomorrow (Prospect
Park). I'm definitely going tonight and possibly tomorrow.

Also, anyone else get Fan VIP tickets for Prince on Friday? Not through
NPGMC but through ABC. I emailed them weeks ago and didn't expect
anything but got tickets this morning. Anyone know where the VIP area
is?

AS

Moderator: Didn't even know they had such a thing. Honestly I don't even
think I am going. I don't even want to get up at early for work and they
pay me. Prince PPbT! -Derek

There was an email address on one of the fan sites and I emailed her and
got one back today. It lets you in earlier and up front.

So how did this fan VIP thing work? Did you email GMA/ABC requesting
specifically for anything?

Not going to see Maceo.

But also got the email from ABC/GMA this morning... an added incentive
to go now.

Kinda weird that P has not yet announced any other gigs while he's in
town.

I have to agree with Derek. 7 minutes of a show, 7 MINUTES!!! Put
up the entire show for $10 and really give us something we'd want.
