Dear All,

Here's a collage of the Reavely and Crawhall versions of 'Where have you been?',
which we were discussing, with 5 strains -
using Reavely's first 3 strains
and continuing using patterns from Crawhall's 4th and 5th,
which were inconsistent with Reavely as they stand.
A more experienced editor composer might do better?

It doesn't want to go much faster than 'Noble Squire Dacre' -
think the words 'Randal my son?' in bar 2 of each strain
Strain 5 works if you play the d's short.
I would probably play strain 1 over again at the end.

The tune certainly needs to be played more widely.

John

I haven't really been following this discussion but perhaps it's worth
pointing out that parody can have the formal musical sense of
incorporating music from one genre into another, or basing a piece on
another piece. Used in that way, it doesn’t have to imply guying or spoofing
the original.

The clearest examples are the polyphonic parody masses of the Renaissance
that are based on folk songs. The most popular tune was L'homme armé,
which generated literally dozens of glorious parody masses in the 15th and
16th centuries by major composers like Dufay, Ockeghem and Josquin.

Cheers,

Paul Gretton

I see why you prefer the 3-strain Reavely version as more
 consistent,
but the Crawhall strain 4 is worth having - perhaps better if
tweaked to fit the others from Reavely.

I should have another look in that case, thanks.

I have been thinking about this, and Lord Randal, since the
 discussion started.
The tune is obviously a good fit to the metre, but if this is right,
then the tune is to be played andante, not as a jig.

Yes, I think that thee 6/8 variation sets (in Peacock et al) are not
(dance) jigs, though often based on them - e.g. Felton Lonnen, which
   exists in both forms.

The idea of Billy Boy as a parody of Lord Randal had never occurred
 to me,
but the worried mum and the emphasis on the girlfriend's culinary
 abilities are common to both.

I think it was Bronson's (Trad Tunes of the Child Ballads) book which
alerted me to this. I had it on loan so I can't check it now, but IIRC
he said that the two songs (or versions of them) were of comparable
age, and I got more the feeling of 'counterpart' than 'parody' from
   what he was saying.

[NSP] Re: Where hast though been all the night?

2010-11-04 Thread Gibbons, John
Matt,

I don't know, but they should be, as it's a grand tune, of noble ancestry...
Reavely's set is fine but a bit short for addicts of long variation sets.
This may account for the lack of attention so far.
Alan Douglass and I tried playing it dotless in the Calthorpe session last
night,
so at least one other person knows and likes it enough to learn.

Your extension is very fine; many thanks for this.
I will have to get used to how it feels under the fingers,
but it played through very nicely.
It will go well when I've learned it better.

The Reavely-Crawhall-Julia-me collaboration sounds ok,
but Julia's and my strain isn't quite right yet to my ear.
There is a bit of a temptation that Alan and I noticed,
to turn it into Newmarket Races, which should be resisted I feel.
Keeping the tag bars relatively intact should help with this.
The Crawhall material helps a lot, but some of the ideas are so inconsistent
you wonder which was the main and which the variant reading, and which is a
typo.
So my attitude using it has been very much pick and mix.

More anon,

John

1994, I think in my case, but I came to that point with a pre-disposition, I
suspect.

I note that it received zero attention
until Richard York's hurdy-gurdy query, which is a sobering thought

But all a tune needs is one person to take up its cause and interest will
spread.
If we help to put the tunes out there, someone may, just may, get adopted by
them.

but I'd been a Peacock addict since Cut and Dry Dolly came out in the
   70's,

and I bought the facsimile edition which I treasure to this day.

Writing set in once I realised Peacock, Bewick and Clough had slowed
   down of late.

Once FARNE let me do comparative playthroughs of different versions,

I started collaging to assemble versions with all the good bits in, and

My vote is that such conversations continue in front of the whole

My vote is that such conversations continue in front of the whole
group. If anyone is uninterested, it takes only a moment to click
next. And there are a lot of lurkers out here who are silent but
interested, and are grateful for being allowed to eavesdrop on informed
  discussions.
Thx,
   Alec

Before you read on - is anyone besides John Gibbons, Julia Say
and
myself interested in this? Seriously, please say so, I'd like to
know,
because if not, we can carry on the discussion privately.
If anyone thinks the three of us are crazy, I would like to point
out
that I have been crazy for longer than them.
I have refrained from reading Julia's and John's versions till I
made
mine public. I was very taken with this tune at the time of the
second
Bewick edition (1998) and used to play it a lot. I am pleased
that
(two) others also enjoy it. I note that it received zero
attention
until Richard York's hurdy-gurdy query, which is a sobering
thought
   regarding the benefits of publication.
You may need to add line breaks, I have just pasted my text as
is.
