Actually, the thing David asked about was a weird bug turned up between
FontForge's font conversion, that particular font, and the pdfetex of
that time. I haven't seen anything like that since, especially since
using the --lcdf switch.

In any case, that font works for me now.

See, I beg to differ.
Whatever high-level framework(s) we come up with should largely be
*independent* of what comes below. Implementation details change, but the
markup should live on independently.

It's one of the drawbacks of these terse mid-level font switches (e.g.,
\ita). The brevity really helps save keying for users, and so they're
really inviting to be used by themselves in documents. The more
attractive and robust markup possibilities allowed by things like
\definestyle go unnoticed, and relatively unused.

So you can define your markup more semantically with \Emphasis{} and
\Acronym{} and \Arabic{} and \Bigger{} and \Slightlybolder{}, and Hans
can change the internals, you can change the font scheme, and everything
still manages to get along.

Disclaimer: I can't claim to have been doing things the structured way up
until now, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

[NTG-context] Will the real palatino please stand up?

2005-04-22 Thread John R. Culleton
In the typescript file type-syn.tex the palatino font is defined
four times, twice for math and twice for serif. The headers in
each pair are identical, e.g.:

\starttypescript [serif] [palatino] [name]

Assume I want to use the second serif typescript, the one that uses
the Palladio fonts. Using the \usetypescript statement, how do I
specify that particular script?

There was another little problem. I had created the background
before the \starttext statement. This made it global in nature.
So when I got rid of it between \startfrontmatter and
\stopfrontmatter it was only abolished in that range of pages.

Live and learn. I had thought that the tags for frontmatter etc were
just documentation but not so.

[NTG-context] arranging + multipage \bTABLE + transparent color = bug?

2005-04-22 Thread Johan Sandblom
The following code compiles flawlessly but the pdf that is generated opens
with the error "Could not find the Extended Graphics State named 'Tr1'."
in Acrobat Reader 7 for Linux (and Windows for that matter). Earlier readers
give less informative messages but in all cases the pdf has almost entirely
empty pages. If the second line is uncommented (so there is no arranging)
there is no problem. If the color is non-transparent, there is no problem.
If the table needs less than 4 sheets to be arranged on, there is no problem.

Is this known, expected, fixable?

The added entries (some are really impressive) are:
- cover.tex (tiling with pstricks)
- program_sample.tex (uses ConTeXt & XeTeX, very cutting edge ;-)
- scorecard.mp (very nice metapost project)
- cave.pdf (also very nice)
- poster.tex (for a linguistics conference)
- 0309Newsletter.tex (your basic newsletter, but not in Quark or
whatever)
- learning_early.tex (screen document)
- LM-Volume-manuscript.tex (hyperref showcase)

Given the number of additions, I decided to make an announcement of it
and spam it on the lists I am on

Hi Hans,
sorry for being a pain in the neck, but is there any chance that this
will be supported by natural tables in the near future?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not demanding anything, I just need to know so
that I can do it differently otherwise.
it depends on what near is ...
if you want a hook, try something:
\starttext
\def\TBLcharalign#1#2{hooked {\bf #2} on tables}

if you remind me in a couple of weeks i can see if i can generalize it; hooks
are a bit tricky because one also needs to know in what pass on is (there are
multiple passes in constructing the table)

before ... after cell, is probably doable but need some thinking (keep in mind
that these tables need to span and such; not really complex but needs to be done
carefully

between rows ... tricky since that may interfere with splitting; maybe doable
when some limitations are accepted

They all get loaded.
The second group (corresponding with the second [serif] [palatino]
[ec,texnansi,8r] typescript in type-enc) is a set of bonus extras, not
stand-alone, that help call in the FPLv1 fonts, which are:
Regular Caps & OsF,
Italic OsF,
Bold OsF, and
BoldItalic OsF.

The different glyph shapes mean they can't really be used on their own as
a family, but rather called out as variants, generally for Old Style
Figures. Actually, the "bonus definitions" down at the bottom of type-syn
are preparation for font variants. So after installing the FPL[1] fonts,
adding the following to your environment:

\definefontvariant [Serif] [os] [OsF]

...allows you to get oldstyle figures with markup like {\Var[os]123}.

However (and I can already hear the question forming on some people's
lips), if you want pervasive OsFs in your Palatino document, without
having to mark each numeric string, you're better off installing the FPL-
Neu fonts[2], using an old-stylish encoding like one listed in Idris's
recent MyWay or in the distro[3].

give less informative messages but in all cases the pdf has almost entirely
empty pages. If the second line is uncommented (so there is no arranging)
there is no problem. If the color is non-transparent, there is no problem.
If the table needs less than 4 sheets to be arranged on, there is no problem.

Yes, this is what I was/am looking for:

2005-04-22 Thread Hans Hagen
Adam Lindsay wrote:
Hi Idris,
I've brought the subject up repeatedly on the list, and got not a lot of
response. I have to think that 1) people are happy with the standard 7
font styles, 2) people have their own hand-rolled solution (like
yourself, myself or Vit--see his Storm fonts support for some nice
ideas), or 3) as Hans keeps bringing up, there are other ways around it.
(Layered definitions, etc., which I'm coming around to think is a better
discipline with markup.)
I'd say take a look at Vit's and my typescripts (I don't directly address
semibold, because semibold markup in running text doesn't usually work):

The antykwa-torunska typescripts in the main distro also point at ways of
accessing smallcaps and semibold via \Var[] variants from the main seven
styles:

It's not that I'm trying to rain on your parade, it's just that I've lost
a bit of enthusiasm for standardisation.
the problem is that we have to deal with old methods as well as new ones; there
is also a speed issue involved. one of the handicaps is that we need to deal
with math; on the other hand, in a mathless usage, a different font scheme is
possible [we can even implement a new one]

Idris Samawi Hamid said this at Thu, 21 Apr 2005 12:36:55 -0600:

My suggestion: Either
a) the \*a(b)(c) etc mechanism needs modification to accomodate >2-char
switches, or
b) an official 2-char switching convention for dealing with semibold and the
standard five variants of small caps in ConTeXt is needed. Ideally users
should not have to define switches for these standard variants anyway.

Here is an idea (further discussion needed):
a) Let's assume no change to the ConTeXt internals to accomodate >2-char
switches.
the a/b/c/d are something from the past; since typefaces switch pretty quick,
one can also switch the bodyfontsize (i can imagine something \sizea \sizeb ...)

thinking of it, it may be an option if i look into an alternative implementation
with (for backwar dcompatibility)

\def\tfa{\sizea\tf}
like definitions with \sizea being a bodyfont switch to a larger size (one
problem is that in that cas ethe baseline distance would also be influences, so
it may not be good idea after all)

b) There are twelve basic style variants in a professional modern serif font
(math, greek, etc excluded): six for lower case and six for small caps.

On this basis, here is my suggestion for an official ConTeXt convention for
professional fonts:

%% lowercase
% medium \tf
% semibold \sb
% bold \bf
% italic \it
% semibold italic \st
% bold italic \bi
%% small caps
% medium \TF
% semibold \SB
% bold \BF
% italic \IT
% semibold italic \ST
% bold italic \BI
the main problem here is this math family business so some choices need to be
made (math does not mix well with text anyway)

i'm not that much in favour of capitalized named (clashes with user commands as
well as some internals), so \scbf is more likely

also, whatever system we cook up ... there are so many bold variants nowadays in
some fonts ... in practice one will not mix semi bold and bold in a running
text, so again, this can be done by typefaces as well:

\definetypeface[normalface] [...]
\definetypeface[bolderface] [...]
\definetypeface[cappedface] [...]
and in places where this special bolder face is used, just switch to \bolderface
The small caps versions are identical to the lowercase versions, with the
difference that the small caps versions use caps. This serves as a mnemonic
device.

We also need some long-winded control sequences:
\definestyle [semiboldroman,semibold] [\sb][]
\definestyle [semibolditalic] [\st][]
\definestyle [smallcapssemibold,semiboldsmallcaps][\SB][]
\definestyle [smallcapsbold,boldsmallcaps][\BF][]
\definestyle [smallcapsitalic,italicsmallcaps][\IT][]

An identical or similar analysis may work for sans-serif, but I have to
check...
before i do something with this i need to think it over; (and look at the storm
definitions and adamns stuff more closely; keep in mind that with xetex and open
type being around we may need even more features)

If you want your TABLE to find natural column widths to fit the content,
use [option=stretch] on the \bTABLE command. (NB it doesn't work as an
option to \setupTABLE, only on the actual \bTABLE.)

Then, assuming you don't need splitting over pages, you can set your
TABLE inside a vbox to define its width. (If you do need splitting, try
putting the TABLE into a textbackground - with no background color set
unless you want it - and set the width and/or margins of that?)

Hans
\SetTableToWidth{10cm}
\starttable[|c|c|c|]...\stoptable
set width to 10 cm, but if I don't care about cell I can have an
overfull box.

So the problem seem to be
"Can I set the total width of a TABLE using a macros like
\setupTABLE[tablewidth=10cm] ?"

To solve this problem, I usually set every cell width using
\setupTABLE[x][n][width=..];
But with \setupTABLE[tablewidth=...]
I will avoid to specify every single cell width,
and the TABLE will find the right dimensions.
I will look into core-ntb.tex.

Hi,
What about:
light \lf
medium \mf
if medium is \tf (as it is now),
semibold \sf
bold \bf

lightitalic \li
italic \it
then italic could be \ti, and all four would be consistent:
 (l|t|s|b)(t|i)
(but I may have missed some reason why this will not work)
Greetings, Taco
semibold italic \si
bold italic \bi

It is more intuitive, is't it?
I checked if they have not been occupied yet and at least in en
interface it is OK.

also, whatever system we cook up ... there are so many bold variants
nowadays in some fonts ... in practice one will not mix semi bold and
bold in a running text, so again, this can be done by typefaces as well:

\definetypeface[normalface] [...]
\definetypeface[bolderface] [...]
\definetypeface[cappedface] [...]
Support for Hans opinion: Storm's DynaGrotesk (Dynamo) comes with 30(!)
bolder/lighter/condensed/extended variants.

Yes.
(I think that \Var[up] (for upright figures) is more intuituve that \Var[ns]),
at least in English:-)))
I agree, both Adams's \Var[lf] and Idris's \Var[up] is better then my

up with upshape/slanted.

As mentioned before, that didn't help.

Obviously, texexec insists to call a comman named "metafun". I have
created an executable file with that name in the path which just
contains one line:
mpost --progname mpost \&metafun $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6

Admittedly not nice, but it seems to work, since mp graphics are
generated, without any changes to texexec.rme/ini. However, I still get
a strange message

This is MetaPost, Version 0.641 (Web2C 7.4.3)
**
! End of file on the terminal... why?

during the texexec run. So something is not quite ok, but I really don't
know what.

indeed the two chars is a limitation (i may be able to get around it but it will

Hmm, I change a little your code to better understand it
\starttext

\stoptable}
\stoptyping
\type{\wd100=}{\tt \PtToCm{\wd100}}\par
\type{\ruledvbox{\unvbox100}:}\par
\ruledvbox{\unvbox100}
\stoptext
and I see on log
Overfull \hbox (11.63779pt too wide) in paragraph at lines 14--14
[][]\*12pf* \VL[] []xxx[] [][] []xxx[]
[]\VL[] []xx
x[] []xxx[] []\VL[] []x[] []x[] []\VL\AR

If I fix table width, I must care about cell content to avoid overfull hbox;
so fix table width is useless, because I have already calculate by
fixing cell content.

I will look into natural table to see something similar to \SetTableToWidth
