When you install official packages in Debian, it goes into /usr whereas the /usr/local is for your quick and dirty installs. By the way, that's why it was a good idea to purge previous tetex packages you had like you did. Actually, the file texmf.cnf should be located at /etc/texmf/ like all the config files for the tetex distrib (and I assume the /usr/share/texmf/web2c is just a link from there). [NTG-context] Modes for configuration
Following the example in the ConTeXt Wiki (http:// wiki.contextgarden.net/Modes) I have defined an environment file that specifies two modes (screen, print) for the production of the same source file. This works well when the appropriate texexec commands are given at the command line. The problem is that I am trying to set this production up for users who are happier with a GUI. Is there a way to do generate diverse outputs from the same source file without resorting to the command line? I have experimented with TeXShop—the users tend to works on Macs —but without success thus far. Thanks for any suggestions. There is a policy about TeX stuff location inside the system which is described in the Debian TeX policy here: http://people.debian.org/~frank/Debian-TeX-Policy This includes as you can read in the first paragraph on config: The central configuration file for TeX applications is /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf, the central font configuration file is /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg, the central language/hyphenation configuration /var/lib/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat, and format generation is determinded by /var/lib/texmf/web2c/fmtutil.cnf. All four files are generated by configuration update programs from configuration files in subdirectories of /etc/texmf. That's how it is, and was'nt involved in the making of this policy :) The original poster was asking for the normal setting in his Debian system and I believe it is correct. [NTG-context] strange (?) exporting from pdf
Hi to all, I was trying to convert form pdf to rtf in order to share docs with non-conTeXt people. Acrobat 7.0 allows with save as to export to many formats. When I convert a pdf created with MSword (or something like: I tried also with some on-line pdfs) I have substantially no problems. But when I convert pdfs created with context or latex I have no blank spaces in the output rtf. Also, accents became autonomous ' (like in source). This seems to be systematic: same behavior with conversion to doc or html, same behavior if I use Trapeze converter instead of Acrobat. E.g.: pdf in -- out (rtf, doc, ...): questo è un test-- questo`euntest I suppose it depends on pedf source generation. Any hints? Thanks a lot -a- Andrea Valle Laboratorio multimediale G. Lines such as cmbsy10 cmbsy10 cmbsy5 cmbsy5 cmbsy6 cmbsy7 should become either cmbsy10 default cmbsy10 cmbsy5 default cmbsy5 cmbsy6 default cmbsy7 partucularly when the name of the tfm and pfb do differ; or just cmbsy10 cmbsy5 cmbsy6 where the name of the tfm and pfb do NOT differ. Otherwise dvipdfmx will fail-( Probably easier to just do tfm default pfb for all cases... [NTG-context] Getting icelandic letters (eth and thorn) to work.
Hello.
I am trying to get the icelandic letters thorn (þ) and eth (ð) to work
but nothing seems to do. These letters work correctly in LaTeX and I
am using ConTeXt and LaTeX from the TeTeX distribution.
The file I currenty have is like this (It's in ISO 8859-1 encoding):

[NTG-context] Arabic transliteration macros
Dear syndicate,
I have been using some ugly/naive macros for scientific transliteration of
Arabic up to now. I recently overhauled these after studying the enco-def.tex
method. These might be useful for others who have to transliterate Arabic. (I
have written my own scientific transliteration by the way, based on the German
ZDMG system:)

imacron occurs very frequently in Arabic transliteration, in virtually every
system. In Latin Modern the macron on the `i' is too large and looks really
bad when used frequently. I've redefined it, and would suggest that, for lmr
anyway, that something like the imacron definition below works much better
than the default.
On the other hand, I need to make the imacron definition more general to
include the bold case (which needs a thicker macron). How can I add a
conditional to the macro definition of \itextmacron so that it selects its
argument based on whether \tf (and the like) or \bf (and the like) is in
effect?
I wish that TeX had a simple \iffont test but maybe there is an easy way to do
that?
If there are any other suggestions or comments to improve or streamline this,
please let me know.

This feature is especially nice when defining a concept in a manual.

In theory, you can say
\startregister[index]{great+topic} and \stopregister[index]{great+topic}
and this will do what you want. However, this is one of several bugs
in the index module of ConTeXt: this will print just this range and
gobble all other entries in the index for great/topic. I wrote a note
to the list about these bugs about a week ago, but there were no
replies. I guess if there are two of us and we yell loud enough, Hans
will hear us eventually :-)

When swapping the two last lines in the .tuo and running
texexec --once

which is not that nice (should have been merged into 101-103),
but recovered the missing file.
In the texutil script there seems to be only sorting on entries' labels
and no further sorting with the page number because it sorts this string
join($JOIN,$Class,$LCKey,$Key,$Entry,$TextHow,$RegStatus,
$RealPageNumber,$Location,$Page,$PageHow,$SeeToo)
What about using a hash instead of a string to handle the register
entries' information so that it will be easier to handle the page ranges
after having sorted the labels?
I wrote a note
