Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the explanations.
Oh sorry, that's an error that crept in when handling of active
characters was changed a couple of weeks ago; I changed it in my own
copy on my box but forgot to upload a new version... Will upload today.

Thanks. Looking forward to the new version.
 B. \usemodule[oldgreek] works with the default font or with Teubner
(mark ii and mark iv). But not with Gentium, although the TrueType
 fonts
 are installed in texmf-localfontstruetypegreekgentium:

!pdfTeX error: pdftex (file gentium): Font gentium at 720 not found
== Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

That's bizarre. What are the names of the truetype files that you have
 installed?

GenAI102.TTFGenAR102.TTFGenI102.TTFGenR102.TTF

I didn't install these, they were in your zip. I downloaded from sil but
saw that they are the same.
Maybe I chose the wrong name in my setup? I used
\usemodule[oldgreek][font=Gentium] (also tried gentium and Gentium102)

Regards, Jörg

 The updating process included

There are really only two options:

a) texexec --make --all failed
b) the new format is generated in a different place from the
old one and the old one is still found first.

In both cases, searching your disk for files named cont-en.fmt
should shed some light on the problem.

i'll have a look at it, but it involves some changes in the lua code

Could it a problem with the cache/hash? Bold is a prefix of Bold Italic...
FYI: XeTeX had a somewhat similar problem in 0.999.4; it got fixed in 0.999.5.

In plain TeX this is expected. You are not running context at all.

I know; I was taking it one step at a time. I assume LuaTeX will
(eventually) be usable even without ConTeXt...

* handlings is weird, I know. The problem is that I am not a native

(short!) wording for the collection of named computing objects that
   alter the font handling.

As this is a first attempt, corrections and suggestions are very
welcome. The next goal will be the creation of a chapter that deals
 with font installation and definitions.

Thank you! I learned something new.
But I'd also like to suggest a few changes:

Table 1.1 is not clear to me:

I tried to make this more clear by altering both text and table a little.

Perhaps explain that pt means point and is 1/72 inch.

Ok, did that.

In 1.2 etc. perhaps use italics instead of slanted as example -
 typographically slanted is a monstrosity.

Did that too.

Your (or ConTeXt's) definition of typographical terms is a bit unusual:
 usual(?) vs. ConTeXt
 clan(?) family
 familystyle(s)
 face alternative

Unusual, yes. But hard to alter, because this is the terminology that
context has used for over a decade now. The current english names are
about what you get if you translate the correct dutch typographical
terms into english literally, btw.

 i.e.
 - Computer Modern is a font clan (in German: Schriftsippe), some
fonts of different styles that are designed to work together

I've seen super family and collection, but this is the first time
ever I heard the word font clan (I knew about Schriftsippe).

 - ... bold is a font face (in German: Schriftschnitt (cut)), or just
 a font (file)

This one is pretty harmless, in my opinion. alternative is not
actually confusing, just a little abnormal/

I could use font class instead of typeface in the manual, that
would help alleviate at least one source of confusion and because
the use of 'typeface' in context is fairly new, it should be ok.
It makes the \definetypeface macro name appear at bit funny, but
that is not a big deal (there are more funny macro names, anyway).

The big problem is family vs. style, and I do not dare to change it:
that would render all already released font documentation useless.

Perhaps you could *all* font switches in one table, maybe as an
 appendix.

Commands like \ss, \bf \ssbf etc. you mean? that list is open-ended ...

Sorry, I didn't read the whole thing, no time.

Thanks for your comments,
Taco

[NTG-context] Index struggles

Hi community!

Please run the attached sample file and see whether you get a correct
index. In my case I only get the indicator letters and under each
indicator a single letter with page number therafter.

Do I miss something?

I am running luatex ConTeXt ver: 2008.08.11 11:45 MKIV fmt:
2008.8.11 int: english/english

Thanks

Hi

There's no ConTeXt package on MikTeX.
The ConTeXt version in the TL will always not be the current version.
So No solution if you follow the package update of the two system.
Please consider ConTeXt Minimals (a TL based distribution).

Maybe you should use \let to redefine starttext/stoptext
make stoptext ship the final page of a document,
and make starttext to begin a new page.

BTW1: what is ConTeXt command to change A4 papir to landscape.

 B. \usemodule[oldgreek] works with the default font or with Teubner

That's bizarre. What are the names of the truetype files that you

 GenAI102.TTFGenAR102.TTFGenI102.TTFGenR102.TTF

I didn't install these, they were in your zip. I downloaded from sil

Maybe I chose the wrong name in my setup? I used
 \usemodule[oldgreek][font=Gentium] (also tried gentium and

Yes, it's font=GreekGentium

I guess I need to include the documentation in the distribution again;

With MikTeX you cannot use LuaTeX (not to say that currently with
MikTeX you cannot use ConTeXt at all :), but I often had MikTeX +
ConTeXt minimals installed, and if I needed, I executed setuptex when

There is no point doing anything about context in texlive right now,
it is way too dangerous. we have working mkii on texlive and even
a (mostly) working xetex, I don't want to endanger that just so that
the mkiv (with its old luatex.exe) will work a little better.

Once texlive 2008 is out for a while, we can think about updating
the context and luatex in it (together).

Perhaps explain that pt means point and is 1/72 inch.
 Ok, did that.

And I guess Martin is right WRT pt vs. bp

In 1.2 etc. perhaps use italics instead of slanted as example -
 typographically slanted is a monstrosity.
 Did that too.

Thank you!

Your (or ConTeXt's) definition of typographical terms is a bit
 unusual:
 usual(?) vs. ConTeXt
 clan(?) family
 family style(s)
 face alternative

Unusual, yes. But hard to alter, because this is the terminology that
context has used for over a decade now. The current english names are
about what you get if you translate the correct dutch typographical
 terms into english literally, btw.

ok; of course stay with ConTeXt's terminology, but perhaps explain
that to those who know other terms.

 i.e.
 - Computer Modern is a font clan (in German: Schriftsippe), some
fonts of different styles that are designed to work together

I've seen super family and collection, but this is the first time
ever I heard the word font clan (I knew about Schriftsippe).

...if you translate the correct german term into englishh
literally... ;-)
That's why I used quotes.

 - ... bold is a font face (in German: Schriftschnitt (cut)), or
 just
 a font (file)

This one is pretty harmless, in my opinion. alternative is not
actually confusing, just a little abnormal/

I could use font class instead of typeface in the manual, that
would help alleviate at least one source of confusion and because
the use of 'typeface' in context is fairly new, it should be ok.
It makes the \definetypeface macro name appear at bit funny, but
that is not a big deal (there are more funny macro names, anyway).

The big problem is family vs. style, and I do not dare to change it:
that would render all already released font documentation useless.

see above: any terminology is good, if it is consistent and well
defined/explained.

Perhaps you could *all* font switches in one table, maybe as an
 appendix.

Commands like \ss, \bf \ssbf etc. you mean? that list is open-
 ended ...

You're right. I meant something like in
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Basic_Text_Formatting
but perhaps that belongs in some other manual.

BTW in LilyPond there's a multilingual glossary, perhaps we should
start such, too? We often get confusion with technical terms. And at
least in German there's currently not even a technical dictionary for
the print/design industries.

Ah. This is using an experimental version of the bib module. I
 uploaded
a new version of the module for testing two months ago, after reports
that the original bibl-apa was not quite following the apa guidelines.
There has been a lack of feedback up until now, so be careful,
there may well be more problems.

Meanwhile, you could try the attached bibl-apa.tex instead.

That solves my problem. Thanks!

Re: [NTG-context] Lastest Build on TeXlive 2008 and MikTeX 2.7

With MikTeX you cannot use LuaTeX (not to say that currently with
MikTeX you cannot use ConTeXt at all :), but I often had MikTeX +
ConTeXt minimals installed, and if I needed, I executed setuptex when
 I needed the minimals.

I would suggest you to install TeX Live 2008, and you'll get both
LaTeX and LuaTeX working, also on Windows. You can always have a copy
of minimals just to be sure that latest features are working, and
 enable them only when needed.

Yes, it's perfectly fine if you just install this one into local tree
(or maybe even into global - at least that's what I do). The rest is
far less important. You only need to be aware that once you update a
package in global tree, the local tree will still have precedence.

Yeah, this works properly, so with the 0.25.4 version of luaTeX what
ships with TeXLive 2008, one needs to pass plain TeX input through
ConTeXt mk IV in order to get the (plain) luaTeX font selection
working properly. At least it works somehow :)

 probably wrong.

 Please help?

I had the same problem. I then gave the command as:

sudo ./first-setup.sh

That succeeded, and the resulting ConTeXt installation seems to run
correctly - but I'm not smart enough to know why this worked or why it
should be necessary.
