Nevertheless: if you want to write more than just a few trivial macros, you will appreciate all the system tools that ConTeXt provides. When I started using TeX, I tried LaTeX, but if you want configurable macros, you have to use additional packages such as ifthen, keyval or xkeyval. I found their use extremely clumsy and their documentation horrible. Doing conditionals in pure TeX isn't easy either. ConTeXt, on the other hand, provides a wealth of consistent \doif... tests; they are logical and easy to use. The key=val parser is maybe the center of the entire ConteXt philosophy and a wonderful mechanism, and even a completely non-CS, non-scientific user such as I am can learn how to use it. You should really read the wiki section I recommended (there is also a pdf version at http://tex.aanhet.net/context/syst-gen-doc.pdf, so if you want to read it offline, just download it. Hey Taco, we're still waiting for part 2...) and you will soon appreciate the elegance and ease of use of these macros. Regarding the following example I've got two questions.
(1) Why don't I ever see the argument #2 in the output?
(2) What do I have to do to suppress the unwanted space
after the end of the output of this macro (as can be seen
in the result before the following comma)?

[NTG-context] fitting a picture to the available space
Hi guys,
I'm pulling my hair out. I'm trying to set up an automatism to fit
pictures to the available space on a slide. I need to consider three
parameters:
1. If the user supplies a value for width= or height= , use this value
(captured in a macro);
2. respect the maxwidth and maxheight which must not exceed the frame;
3. if the picture is smaller than the available space, blow it up so
that it reaches the maxwidth or maxheight (but doesn't exceed either).
factor=max or =fit does not work because it allows pictures to exceed
one of the maximum values. About a year ago Giuseppe Bilotta wrote a
message which I append; it describes my problem. Is there a generic
solution for this problem? If there is, I'll gladly take it; if there
isn't, I thought I had a solution but may need help with expanding and
conditionals, then I'll be back with more questions.

[NTG-context] Strange behaviour with tikz
Hello again
I don't understand a strange thing.
Patterns in tikz become black in some case.
Here is a minimal example :

Without any text before the chapter or without the chapter command I
see the patterns.
With these commands I just see a black rectangle.
Can I get my patterns back ?

I'm not a native texspeaker, but this should wo what you want:

You just nest the two \ifdim tests.

Does something like \newcommand exist in ConTeXt?
My questions aims especially at the optional argument
with a predefined value. So, how do I realize
\newcommand{\test}[2][A]{foo}
with ConTeXt. In the fine manual I found an index entry
\definecommand, but in the 'rest' of the manual it was
never mentioned (print and screen version alike)!
