[NTG-context] latest beta

2008-10-08 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
Hi Hans,

the latest beta has a problem with font handling: in my Greek output,
the letters sigma and sigmaalt don't work anymore; they're
replaced either by some undefined character (box with letter X in
it) or by empty spaces. I tried to find out where something has
changed, but haven't found anything so far. If you don't have an
immediate idea what's wrong, I'll try to investigate further.

[NTG-context] how to typeset this formula ?

2008-10-08 Thread Steffen Wolfrum

Hi,

I have a DOC-file with a lot of quite complex math formulae.

Trying to find a good workflow from doc to context I was experimenting
with the Word plugin MathType, resp. with the different translator
options (any better tip very welcome!).

The best results I had with typesetting the code with newmath.
Only one kind of formula with arrays gave errors.

I attach the respective formula as a doc file here.

Does anybody know a better way to deal with this kind of formulae in
ConTeXt?

Any help very much appreciated!!

For things like my journal, I get lots of inconsistent transliterations,

I would like to be able to do things like

[NTG-context] more bad news about latest beta

2008-10-08 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
OK, I have more bad (for me) news about the latest beta: it simply
refuses to play with some of my fonts; most importantly for me with
the Gentium fonts. Whenever I try to compile something with Gentium in
it, I get the error message

!luaTeX error (file /Users/tas/Library/Fonts/GenAR102.ttf): Invalid
glyph index (gid 1699)
  == Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
MtxRun | fatal error, code: 70

I have now compared the latest beta and an older one, and I think the
culprit is this line:

load otf | featurefile: /Users/tas/texmf/fonts/fea/context/greek-
babel.fea

luatex then goes on to create

luatex-cache/context/408a90c432ceda2c1e4a80ad5d0e5350/fonts/otf/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]
luatex-cache/context/408a90c432ceda2c1e4a80ad5d0e5350/fonts/otf/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]

The thing is, I know that Gentium doesn't work with this fea file;
that's why I wrote one specifically for this font. Gentium is nowhere
connected to this fea file. When I use an older version, this fea file
is not used and [EMAIL PROTECTED] is not created. The newer
version creates it, and I have no clue why...

Very puzzled

 Sometimes I use the following for simple substitutions:

 \defineactivecharacter  '  {\otfchar{quoteright}}

 But is there a more general mechanism to do things

 \definesubstitution{string1}{string2}

 eg

 \definesubstitution{--}{–}

 Of course ConTeXt already provides this particular substitution

 In mkii it doesn't. Fonts do that substitution. In mkiv a hack is
 applied to fonts (not to TeX macros), so that this particular
 substitution works.

Hmm, so this is much more complicated than I thought...

 but I'm
 interested in such a mechanism for more general purposes.

 In mkii this is not possible, except with some ugly hacks. You can
 easily substitute a single character by making it active. To
 substitute whole words, you either need to modify fonts, or write some
 dirty macros.

I see. In any case, mkii is obsolete for my purposes, if/when I get to
writing a book on ConTeXt it will cover mkiv only.

 In mkiv you can either apply some patches to fonts (search for tlig
 in ConTeXt source, for example font-otf.lua, also, there are some fea
 files in fonts/fea/context capable of doing that), or change input
 text while reading/digesting some TeX file.

tlig was buggy, but it works in the latest beta. Thank you, Hans!

 Hans and Taco can probably tell you more.

And Thank you, Mojca!

It's easy to write a simple ruby/perl(or even lua) script that will do
such changes for you *before* typesetting articles. That's probably
much better, since you also want to have clean sources at some point.

Of course, writing the list of substitutions still needs to be done by
you, but that's in either case.

If you need that, write kind-of-specification how you would like to
use such a command.

Yes, but the above is just one kind of example. Indeed, what I am thinking
of is just an extension of the kind of configurability texies like to do.
For your average user -- or a secretary -- we don't want to have to point
them to lua or ruby etc...

 Of course, writing the list of substitutions still needs to be done by
 you, but that's in either case.

 If you need that, write kind-of-specification how you would like to
 use such a command.

Maybe I misunderstand... I could see something like I mentioned in the
original mail

\definesubstitution{string1}{string2}

or even a database approach:

\definesubstitutions[
string1,string1'|
string2,string2'|
string3,string3'
]

Here is another example. I generally prefer an en-dash padded with spaces
-- and with a no-break space after -- to an em-dash for parenthetical
constructions. So I would like to do, eg

\definesubstitution{emdash}{ endash~}

Again, this saves time in extensive editing, and I can stay in TeX without
fiddling so much with scripting, CTRL-F/H/R etc. It maintains control in
case I change my mind and want to revert etc. For long documents and
projects this gets unwieldy pretty fast and I end up with lots of typos
etc.

I guess we could get really funky and add a regular expressions engine
using lua:

\definesubstitution[regex]{string1}{string2}

And I'm sure Hans, Taco, and other programmers can think of other nifty
macros...

But the basic functionality would suffice for now :-)

Best wishes
Idris

Hi Michail,

It's a little late for me to check my mailbox. Thank you for your work
and yes, I'm
interested in it. Can I get a copy of it?

 Dear All,

 And how to embed .prc files into the .pdf document?

 I have made a standalone embedder some time ago,
 reproducing capabilities of movie15 LeTeX package and somewhat extending them.
 If anybody is interested it can be put in shipable state.

Sincerely, Michail

 Sorry, I should have warned you guys. This is a bug in 0.30.0,
 there will be a 0.30.1 later today.

Then again, on re-reading, maybe this is a different problem, maybe
related to the mkiv code itself. So, let's just say that on my side
of things there is *a* bug relating to fonts that may or may not
be the cause of this issue.

[NTG-context] Math drawings for dummies

2008-10-08 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Hello,

for those who are afraid of Metapost (or simply think that it takes
too much time to program a simple figure with not too fancy features),
there's a magnificent point-and-click tool for creating mathematical
drawings with perfect precision and TeX labels matching the style of
your document.
(If you want to find itersection of curves, or curves going through
several points, you don't need to pretend that you have hit the
intersection as you would do in Corel Draw.)

The prerelease version has TikZ export (with plain/LaTeX/ConTeXt
support included).

[NTG-context] new beta

Hi,

the new beta has some optimizations wirh regards to the font memory
footprint (at the cost of convenience but that only concerns me)

Hans

for chinese users: there is not much more memory to gain (unless we
accept more mess)
