[NTG-context] questions about math formula
Hi all,
I have two questions about math formula.
1) I'd like to use \startalign to typeset mathematical formulas since it
is more convenient than \eqalign. But the formula number cannot be
located between two lines just as \eqalign can. I hope following example
can make me clear.

The number of equations in second formula can only be put on the first
line or second line but not between them.
My question is how to make the location of formula number in \startalign
the same as it is in \eqalign ?
2) It seems that \left and \right cannot be used on separate groups.
Here is a simple example:

a = \left(\frac{b+c}{d+e}\cr

If I change \left and \right to \big, it compiles successfully. But I
think \left and \right are more convenient. Are there some solutions to
use \left and \right in this situation ?

[NTG-context] questions about indentation
Hi all, I'm using ConTeXt to typeset Chinese, and I am confused with indentation in ConTeXt. 1) I've searched the wiki and found several commands maybe relevant: \indentation, \indenting, \setupindentations, \setupindenting. My first question is what are the differences between indentation and indenting ? 2) In Chinese, most paragraphs start with an indentation of two characters. How to make the width of the indentation to be exactly two Chinese characters? I can achieve this approximately by using \setupindenting[big,yes] and \setupheads[indentnext=yes]. Thanks. [NTG-context] date format in Chinese environment
When I was trying to typeset date in Chinese environment(\usemodule[chinese]) using the commond \currentdate, the date format was strange: 2007 五月 18(the month was in Chinese). What I want is 2007.5.18 or 2007-5-18(the month should not be in Chinese). How to achieve this? [NTG-context] Footnotes on wrong page
I wrote about this a few days ago, but did not get a response, perhaps because
I included sample code. So...this time I am including the main part of my code
so you can perhaps see what I am doing wrong.
My problem is that many of my footnotes show up on the wrong page. Sometimes
the text that references the footnote is at the bottom of a page, and the
footnote number shows up with a small graphic arrow next to it. In these cases,
the actual footnote text will show up on the next page. Also in this case, the
footnote number with the footnote text will usually be labeled 1, even though
the next footnote after it (the one that really belongs on that page) is
numbered 1 also.
Sometimes footnote numbers appear in the text even though there is no footnote
on any page that has that number.
Any help is appreciated.

[NTG-context] Using doublesided and even blank page shows header
I have the following in my environment setup: \setuppagenumbering[alternative=doublesided,location=] I am properly getting the doublesided page setup. Also, chapters begin only on odd pages, which is exactly what I want. However, when a chapter ends on an odd page, the next (even) page that I would like to be completely blank instead contains both the header and footer. I found one other thread in this forum that told how to make this extra even page totally blank. However, I am not an advanced ConTeXt user yet, and I did not understand how to implement the solution. Is there a simple explanation of how to eliminate the header and footer on this even page? I felt a little bad about asking everyone else to do my work for me, so I did take a stab at solving my footnote line-break issue :). I came up with something that seems to work, but I'm not sure it is the simplest or best way to do it. Basically, I used something from your last post (the \specialcommand) to turn off the default footnote number completely and instead include the footnote number as part of the footnote text:

I put a non-breaking space in this example, but it seems to work with no space there as well. It is hard to get a number to split on purpose anyway, but I found that by successively adding"i" characters to any footnote text, I could eventually cause the next footnote to leave its number on one line and its text on the next. However, after the above, the first word of the footnote text seems to stay with the footnote number regardless, which is what I wanted.
I would be interested in knowing though if there is a simpler solution.
Also, any idea what might be causing some whole footnotes to appear on, say, page 11, when the text that references the footnote is on page 10? Is this something I just have to fix by tweaking my main text?

Thank you for the response! Here is what I found. The code you suggested...

...actually produced *more* space between the footnote number and the text of the footnote. However, I removed the three tilde (~~~) characters and I got *no* space between the footnote number and text, which is what I wanted to achieve.
A couple of other questions though:
1) My footnotes sometimes still "break" in that the footnote number will be at the end of a line and the footnote text at the beginning of the next line. I tried putting one of the non-breaking space (~) tilde characters back in, just to see if that would prevent the break. However, it *does not* prevent the break...the footnote number and text are still separated. Is there any way to force footnote numbers to be on the same line as the first word of the footnote?
2) Sometimes the last few footnote numbers in the body of my main text appear with a small arrow next to them. These footnotes end up on the next page of text rather than on the page where they are referenced. What is the best solution to this type of thing?
3) Is there a way to turn off hyphenation in the main body of my text, such as with "\nohyphens", but turn *on* hyphenation in the text of the footnotes. My main text is ancient Greek, while my footnotes are mostly English. The Greek is hard to read if it is hyphenated, but I get much better formatting in the footnotes if hyphenation is turned on.

[NTG-context] Space between footnote number and text
Does anyone know of a way to get rid of the space between a footnote number and the footnote text? I am formatting my footnotes in paragraph form (n=0) and sometimes the footnote numbers actually appear at the end of a line with the textwrapped around tothe beginning of the next line (which doesn't look very attractive). I would prefer there to be no space at all between the footnote number and the text, but if there has to be one, it seems like it should be a non-breaking space. Is there a way to "fix" this? [NTG-context] Footnote Formatting
I am new to ConTeXt and have two questions about footnote formatting. I have noticed that there is always a space between the footnote number and the actual text of the footnote. My first question is: How can I eliminate this space or at the very least replace the space with a non-breaking space. On my system, the footnote numbers sometimes appear at the end of a line while the footnote text wraps around to the next line. Also, I am formatting my footnotes with \setupfootnotes[n=0,...] so that they appear at the bottom of the page in paragraph form (i.e., not one footnote per line). Due to a section change in the document, I may restart footnote numbering at "1" in the middle of a page. When this happens, I would like to indent footnote #1 just like you would indent a paragraph. [NTG-context] Dropped caps and line length
I am using dropped caps in my document, and I have noticed an occasional problem related to them. The problem is that in paragraphs that have dropped caps, an occasional line will run off into the right-hand margin instead of being hyphenated or wrapped around to the next line. I have to confess that I modified the DroppedString in supp-fun.tex (where \DroppedCaps is defined) to add the digits 0 through 9 so that I could have numbers as dropped caps. I thought at first that this might have caused the problem. However, I switched back to an original installation of ConTeXt and found that the problem occurred there too. This is especially pronounced with certain fonts. I also tried using the lettrine module to perform the dropped caps, but saw the same effect there. I will add also that I am using the t-ancientgreek module, and the text in question is polytonic Greek. Thanks in advance for any help offered. [NTG-context] Question about t-ancientgreek module

I have a question about the t-ancientgreek module for typesetting ancient Greek.
I am using DroppedCaps (although I am dropping a numeral instead of a letter in a paragraph...I modified the DroppedString to contain the numerals 0-9) in a paragraph of ancient Greek typeset in the GreekGentiumAlt font. Most paragraphs look fine, but occasionally a word will extend out into the margin instead of being hyphenated or wrapped over into the next line.
Here is a bit of sample code that shows this:

Note also that some fonts show this problem while others do not. For instance, the Aristarcoj font does not show this problem. Also, if I remove the dropped cap numeral from any given paragraph, the problem does away.
Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong, or how I can correct this problem? Any help anyone is able to give will be greatly appreciated!

[NTG-context] hyphenation within columnsets with background

I am preparing a rather large text, completely set in 3 columns, which
has lots of text with grey backgrounds.
During the preparation of this text, some questions came up :
1 - At first I put a grey background to my texts defining the
following macros (they are used within columnsets):

And to my surprise, I saw, that hyphenation works clearly better when
my backgrounds are defined with the second set of macros, which is of
course good news, especially when using 3 columns, but : is there an
explanation for this behaviour ?
2 - Another problem I have with those backgrounds is the following :
they seem to work well when the text spreads over several
columns/pages, as long as I don't force a 'next column' in the text.
The following piece of context causes a 'TeX capacity exceeded' error:

I had exactly the same problem today after updating from an older tetex/context to the latest version of tetex. Problem seems to be some modifications in pdftex. After moving my type1 fonts (that previously worked fine) with their tfm, afm and type1 files to the new $HOME/.texmf-var/fonts folder, putting the map files in $HOME/.texmf-var/fonts/map folder and including those mapfiles with updmap, texexec generated the pdf file with pk bitmap fonts. Although I believed that tex could find all necessary font files and mapfiles, it was only after explicitly adding \loadmapfile[myownfonts.map] in the tex file, that everything suddenly worked fine (this was not necessary in my old tetex/context setup). As I told before, I want the grey box as defined in the page numbering
(see below) to appear with its outer border aligned to the outer border
of the outer margin. Right now, it aligns with its inner border to the
inner border of the outer margin. I tried with uitlijnen=buiten but
without success.

[NTG-context] pagenumbers in margin
Hello, After a long period of Context inactivity, I am again into document preparation. I want to put the pagenumbers in a doublesided document in the outer margin. So far no problem at all... but I want the number to be placed in a 3cm wide grey box, wich I do with an inframed command within the pagenumbering setup. This also works more or less, but (see if I can explain this in plain english without using figures !!.) : The grey box with the pagenumber aligns its inner border with the inner border of the outer margin. What I want is the grey box to align its outer border with the outer border of the outer margin. Any suggestion ? Hello, I have been trying to use pstoedit to generate a .mp file but it doesn't work :-( I have followed these steps: 1.- With Gimp: test.gif - Save as: test.ps 2.- pstoedit (as Metafun manual indicates): pstoedit -ssp -dt -f mpost test.ps test.mp But test.mp seems empty (just lines with % and so) So, any link to continue reading?
