If your web requirement is single XML files per article, you should be able to 
feed ConTeXt multiple XML files and typeset them as one PDF.

Hi Fabrice,

I believe it is just picking up the context executable from your path. You 
should be able to add the standalone to your path before the texlive version. 
It has been several years since I've run texlive though.

I haven't checked in a while, since this is already set in my init.el file, but 
auxtex was using mkii/texexec a few years ago. Have you checked you're using 
mkiv/context?

Any reason you want to use MKII instead of MKIV?

It looks lime you need to set the environment variable OSFONTDIR, which should 
point to the directory where your fonts are stored.

After doing some research, I stumbled upon saxon-lint 
(https://github.com/sputnick-dev/saxon-lint), a perl program
capable of using xpath3 expressions.

In the crudest form possible:

I still need to write $ELM into an array to make it do the following:

{xml:elements:from:the:variable:elm} % list the results from  saxon-lint
{xml:*}
\stopxmlsetups

That would give me the "blank" mapping file I want, saving me the
trouble of typing out the whole thing every time.

Hi Pablo,

Sorry for the brevity of my original message, it is quite late.

I'm working on styling an XML dialect, where nesting can go, and often does 
quite deep, and several different section level elements can be allowed to nest 
within each other. If nested sections were possible, I wouldn't have to write 
code to try and figure out how deep a nested is; ConTeXt would know and would 
number the sections accordingly.

I find extremely useful. When I go to style some XML file, I don't have to type 
all of that stuff or study the XML file to find out what elements are 
contained. This feature will make it extremely easy to get something functional 
very quickly.

I'm having trouble getting system fonts to load with simplefont on Debian 8.1. 
I'm not exactly sure how to troubleshoot this issue. This worked when Debian 
Jessie was still 'testing' but now fails on a machine it was working on and on 
a fresh install. All my fonts are in ~/.fonts and Libre Office Writer can see

That did not seems to solve the problem. I'll assume there is a problem elsewhere with my 
system, unless there is anything else I can try. It is strange, as this worked before

cases where it needs a full scan esp when fonts are moved.

On Debian, you can try: 
fc-list : family
to list the family name. I was playing with this last night on my Debian Jessie 
system. 

The colon is a wildcard operator that will match all fonts on the system. I 
usually just grep the results for what I need.

You may want to refresh the font cache, with
fc-cache -fv

Something I realized as I was messing around waiting for fontforge to
install is that, at least for fonts that come with *.afm metric files
and *.pfb files,, you can look at them for some info. Looking at
ubkl8a.afm I see:

FontName URWBookmanL-Ligh
FullName URW Bookman L Light
FamilyName URW Bookman L

The same info is similarly ascii-encoded in the pfb file. But when
fontforge had installed (I needed it to look at the otf and ttf fonts

my example) I double checked and found the same info.

 
 The family name is shown when you use the info option, e.g.
 
 mtxrun --script font --list --info --all texgyrepagella*

This was one of the first things I tried.

The two nested \framed commands are aligned as I'd like them, but I'd like to remove the small gaps so the text in the first nexted frame sits flush to the left of the text area and the second framed sits flush right to the text area. In other words, I'd like to remove the small gaps from the left and right of the frames. 


Is that possible?

[NTG-context] Title in margin example from the wiki not working?

I'm trying to get the subject heading in the margin. I found this code on the 
wiki, but it is not compiling with the latest version of ConTeXt.

[NTG-context] multiple xmlsetups in multiple files?

Hello list,

I've started making a stylesheet for a fairly large XML vocabulary. The XML vocabulary is already divided into semantic chunks, so I'd like the strucure of my ConTeXt file to match that structure. 


When typesetting an XML document with the command context 
--environment=stylesheet.tex myfile.xml, is it possible to:

(1) use the include or input command to include child tex files?

(2) in each child tex file have its own startxmlsetup command?

Hi Jan,


What is your real use case? A typical XML based workflow involves XSL-FO -
PDF route using FO processor (Antenna House, XEP, FOP etc).


I'm looking to use DITA to publish a literary journal. The journal will contain contributions from multiple authors. I also want to publish works by single authors. I won't make enough (or any) money to justify the very expensive license for Antenna House or XEP, thus they are not really an option. I find FOP to be really sub par. 


My basic work flow would have to be DITA XML  DITA OpenToolkit (build process)  ??? 
 ConTeXt  PDF, where ??? could be some Toolkit XML output, XHTML, HTML5, FO.


Anyway, there are several ways. If you are not locked to DITA yet, I would
strongly recommend switching to DocBook instead :-) 


The DocBook vocabulary does not fit my needs. TEI is much closer to what I want, but I'm already familiar with DITA. 


This XSLT way is most natural for XML processing, but I understand that
writing XSLT transformation is discouraging for many people.


Yes, I'm generally OK with working with XSLT. DITA has a build system, called 
the DITA OpenToolkit that is build with Ant, a bit of java, and XSLT. You can 
see the toolkit here: http://dita-ot.github.io/

The Toolkit already supports PDF output via FOP, but as I said, FOP leaves quite a bit to be desired.

Hi Hans,

Thanks for your reply. I found my way to foxet, but never got it working. I've 
written several mapping files for XML with good results, but DITA is a bit of a 
different beast. 

DITA is geared towards technical writing, and its main features are defined 
content types, a mechanism for controlled reuse below the file level, a modular 
structure, and built in extensibility of its XML vocabulary. It comes with its 
own toolkit that filters out and pulls in content and it uses FOP to produce 
PDF (hence my mention of FO). Since the toolkit must process the XML to resolve 
linked content and remove content, it is not recommended to directly typeset 
the XML like you could do with DocBook. I see a few ways to achieve what I 
want, which is a PDF produced my ConTeXt: target a merged XML file that the 
dita toolkit has produced, produce a concatenated HTML file and typeset that, 
or typeset the fo file before FOP gets to it. Of those approaches, the first 
seems like the best idea, but I wanted to query the list before proceeding.

Keith,

Maybe you should explore an XML format that can be transformed directly to
epub. You'd also be able to write a style sheet with ConTeXt that would out
put a PDF as well. I think TEI-Lite is a good starting point.

Since you can make your own commands in ConTeXt, it will never be able to
intelligently map all commands on to simple HTML.

 and i still read paper books (or when i would have ebooks i wouldn't need
 to render them) ... pdfs views quite well on e.g. nexus 7 devices and i
 assume the upcoming sony high res ebook will also do pdf well

 Especially, since it comes up every now and then.
 Furthermore, I there was a simple way to create epubs/books with ConTeXt

On the thread someone wanted to add something to the manual, but didn't
have SVN access. The admin wasn't getting email, and thus couldn't grant
the new account. The material was not added the to manual.

If the manual was on github, it could have been forked, branched, content
added, pull request made. End of story. So we do want the features of
github.

/etc/bashrc or the like... it sounds like you don't have permission/your
shell isn't getting the right path...

build the nokogiri gem with RVM  ruby 2.0 on my Mac OS X 10.6.8 machine.

Another small note, since I just walked down the ePUB path: you'll be very
sad to find out that a lot of rendering engines for popular readers are not
consistent, won't render standard XHTML markup correctly (nest an ordered
list within an unordered list and then look at it in adobe digital editions
and several other readers). But it is just XHML + CSS! you'll cry, How
can they not render it correctly? I don't know, but it was an extremely
frustrating process. I even contacted adobe to try and report this nested
list bug to them... their suggestion was that I could *pay* them to work
with content experts who would help me correct my source so that it
would render correctly.

The best reader imho is iBooks on the iPad, nothing else, from what I've
seen, comes close. But that is one expensive eReader. :(

 My database doesn't generate DocBook. It generates a custom XML document
 from which I generate a web page, and a LaTeX document (though soon to be

 - Automatic section numbering taking care of different conversions.

 other people wanting such a feature.)

 What about accessibility? I expect that visually impaired people would

 That is a good point. The current XML structure produced by ConTeXt (Hans
 correct me here if I'm mistaken) is not accessible, as it doesn't adhere to
 strict XHTML. I suspect that div tags would not be accessible -- the only
 way to provide true accessibility in EPUB format would be by using the
 strict XHTML tags.

 for instance, we have more levels than H1..H6, so how to do H7? if someone
 has to deal with that, he/she can as well transform all into H1 with some
 class which is a local solution then


 I realize there is not going to be a one-to-one map of all possible
 ConTeXt macros to XHTML. For someone who has 7 levels of nested sections
 they would either have to rewrite some Lua or perform some post-processing
 (e.g., with XSLT). I would posit that a document with 7 levels of nested
 sections is not going to be a common occurrence.

 When I talk about strict XHTML, I'm proposing that a _simple_ ConTeXt
 document (up to 6 header levels, numbered and unnumbered lists, images,
 text emphasis, etc.) should generate a simple, validating XHTML document.
 Trying to attain 100% coverage of ConTeXt transmogrification to XHTML is
 ridiculous when, I suspect, 80% coverage would meet most needs. :-)

 It is definitely possible to translate the ConTeXt EPUB output to XHTML.
 However, there are practical realities that hinder such an approach.
 Architecturally, if anyone is going to translate an XML document to EPUB
 format, it certainly won't be this way:

 *XML + XSLT - ConTeXT File - ConTeXt EPUB XML + XSLT - EPUB + CSS*

 It'll be this way, which is less time-consuming, less complex, and less
 susceptible to err:

 *XML + XSLT (or API) - EPUB + CSS*

 However, it does not, as we all know, produce as feature rich output as
 leveraging the ConTeXt abilities that Aditya mentioned, which was the point:

 *XML + XSLT - ConTeXT TeX - EPUB + CSS*

You will probably need CSS styling.

Maybe you can use one of the popular CSS reset or normalize stylesheets
available. I haven't tested, but http://necolas.github.io/normalize.css/ is
pretty popular.

Beware, a lot of EPUB rendering engines are crap, and there is not a lot of
conformity throughout various products. This seems sad... since it is just
XHTML.

Hi Wim,

TL is a huge beast. ConTeXt is still a moving target in terms of
development and thus the frozen nature of TL will leave their version of
context quite stale.

You can install ConTeXt as a stand-alone on your system, then just run a
bat or bash script to update it. This is much easier than dealing with TL I
find.

You editor probably isn't picking up ConTeXt because it's probably not on
the system path. I add the setuptex command at the end of .bashrc or
.bash_profile. This makes it accessible from the terminal, but not all
programs read in .bashrc or .bash_profile. You should add ConTeXt to your
editor's path, if possible.

Hi John,

My logic in thinking about this says odd=right=page 1 = list it first in
the command. Anyway. I've been using ConTeXt for a couple of years and have
found that the manuals usually lag behind the wiki. I gather most of my
needed context info from this mailing list and the wiki. I will check out a
manual and print pages that I think I'll need (or bookmark them or
what-have-you), but rarely is the PDF manual the first place I look
anymore.

You can certainly navigate all the known commands in the wiki using the
taxonomy, but I find it much more useful just to put the command without
the \ in front of it. So when looking for \setupheadertexts, I enter
setupheadertexts in the search box and it returned the page I linked to.
ConTeXt generally employs easy-to-remember names for commands, so a keyword
search is helpful also.

Also without fail, this mailing list has some very bright people on it, who
are quick and friendly with answers, no matter your level of use with
ConTeXt.

At any rate, ConTeXt is very able, I hope you enjoy it! I also hope to be
able to offer services like your wexford press sometime in the near future.
The publishing landscape is changing rapidly!

Hi John,

Perhaps http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setupheadertexts will be of
some help? Though, the wiki page does not list the [text] argument in your
second command. I'm not sure that ConTeXt sees recto and verso, as the wiki
page talks of even and odd pages.

I would agree with the (no subject) or SPAM titles, but if your search tool
can't tell the difference between \column, Bug in -  - \column, Bug in
\column and Bug in \column then you probably need to find a new search
tool. I subscribe  to the list in non-digest format, e.g. I get every
email. I used to get it in digest, but I found that made my searching
tougher. I use gmail and have all the list messages skip my inbox and go
directly to a tag. This has helped a ton!

[NTG-context] \usemodule not working in latest beta

Forgive me if this has been answered else where, I couldn't seem to spot it.

I have my own little version of t-title.tex that worked with the beta
before luatex 0.75.

Upon updating to the latest beta last night, the document wouldn't compile.
It looked like it wasn't reading up the \usemodule[title] at all, because
it was giving me an undefined control sequence error on the first macro
defined in t-title.tex (\doctitle{my title}).

Help please!

Have you considered authoring in something besides context? Say TEI XML or
Docbook, or even markdown (if possible)? If markdown is suitable, then you
can end up with both epub and context at the end. Or if using TEI or
docbook, you can write a map file (something I have been trying to do) and
typeset the xml file directly with context. I'm always happier knowing that
I can get as many different output types from a single source as possible.

 ePub is definitely structured. I would say too structured, since it makes
 you provide both a ToC manifest and a navigation manifest that necessarily
 must include almost identical information ;) Of course, depending on a
 simplified browser for your document viewing and having lots of secret
 failover modes to handle poorly formatted documents makes the structure less
 meaningful than it ought to be.

 You are free to break your document into as many HTML chunks as you wish,
 but you are limited to fairly prosaic HTML and CSS. I'm of the impression
 the HTML documents generally map onto chapters so as not to distress the
 hardware's memory constraints too much.

 Overall, ePub and Kindle's format strike me as too much and too little
 respectively. I should be able to change the font and the formatting, but I
 definitely consider HTML + CSS is too much complexity.

[NTG-context] xml/fo typesetting with ConTeXt/foXet?

Hi list!

I am hoping that someone can point me towards some more information on
typesetting FO (Formatting Objects) with foXet and ConTeXt. I've read
the threads on the foxet mailing list (and I assume that's dead, last
post in 2005), and the wiki provides pretty sparse information. There
are some files listed in the manual, but it doesn't say how to load
them (or I missed that part, very possible).

I can parse my .FO file, but the content is just flowed into PDF,
there are no line breaks, or headings, or anything-- it just strips
out the xml tags.
