[nysbirds-l] Still Room on Jan. 23 Freeport 8 Hour Pelagic

2011-01-05 Thread Paul Guris
We still have space aboard our Sunday, Jan. 23 pelagic trip out of Freeport.

We ran this trip last year and did very well. Our sightings included 33
Common Murres, 2 Atlantic Puffins, roughly 200 Razorbills, dozens of
Kittiwakes, incredibly cooperative Iceland Gulls, a great Gannet show, and
various winter waterfowl.

The trip sails on the Capt. Lou VII, a very comfortable boat with full
heated cabin and spacious upper deck that's great for birding. We'll leave
at 8:00 AM and return around 4:00 PM. The cost is $130 and is being run in
conjunction with New York City Audubon.

Hope to see you aboard.

[nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow continues at EPCAL in Calverton and Route 51, Eastport Birds Today, Jan. 5th

2011-01-05 Thread Carl Starace
Hello Everyone,Dick Belanger and I entered the Epcal entrance this
morning and found Kathy Klecan already having nice scope views of the Lark
Sparrow. With it were a few Tree and 18 Field Sparrow. We spent a good deal
of time along the runways later and came up with 3 Redtails, 2 Northern
Harrier, 2 Light Morph Rough legged Hawks and a few Horned Larks. At the
uppermost field along Route 51's west side in Eastport there were 2
Redtails, 2 Northern Harrier, one a Grey Ghost, and 9 Eastern Bluebirds.
Good January Birding, Carl Starace

[nysbirds-l] North Shore Suffolk/Nassau Counties This Morning

2011-01-05 Thread ken feustel
We went north to Cold Spring Harbor this morning around 8:00AM and found a
group of birders eyeing the Tufted Duck. Satisfied with the looks we had of the
bird we moved on to Bayville in the hope that the Barrow's Goldeneye might be
present - no luck. Our next stop was an icy Shu Swamp where a short walk
yielded two Rusty Blackbirds and a Winter Wren. We then moved on to Caumsett
State Park where we searched through some 600 Canada Geese for anything unusual
with no result. I then headed south to Massapequa Lake on Montauk Highway
where a Eurasian Wigeon had been previously observed. The lake was mostly
frozen but there was some open water on the east side of the lake where the
Eurasian Wigeon was quickly located with about a half-dozen Common Mergansers
and ten American Wigeon.

[nysbirds-l] Southern Nassau County CBC Results

2011-01-05 Thread Shaibal Mitra
The Southern Nassau County Christmas Bird Count was conducted on Saturday, 1
January 2011, by 61 participants. This represents the 71st time this CBC has
been held since its inception in 1932 (there were several years with no count
during the 1930s and 1940s).

A total of 125 species was recorded (plus Ipswich Sparrow), a little below the
20-year average of 128. The weather was good on count day, but prolonged
freezing conditions during December clearly impacted a variety of species. In
general, this year's results struck us as rather average, with few really
exceptional species and few really bad misses (our worst misses this year
involved species we've knowingly struggled with in recent years).

In selecting the unusual species named below, we included a few that, although
they are quite regular on this count, are nevertheless rare in NYS in winter.
Some species that we would ordinarily expect on this count, but which were
perceived as good finds this year owing to the cold early winter weather, are
highlighted as "ice-sensitive saves." Several species are widely expected on LI
or NYS CBCs in general but are nevertheless very difficult in southern Nassau
County. These are difficult to categorize as either highlights or low-lights,
but for convenience we've lumped a few of these local oddities in with the low
counts and misses.

Many thanks to all those who participated, and Happy New Year to all!
