[nysbirds-l] Photos of Yesterdays Terns

2011-08-29 Thread Luke Ormand
I put up a blog post with photos of the Black Terns and Royal Terns I found
yesterday in Hampton Bays along the shores of the Peconic Bay and the
Shinnecock Inlet. I had a photo of a Sandwhich Tern but seemed to have
"misplaced it". For those interested:

RE: [nysbirds-l] Monday Birding - Jones Beach area and Floyd Bennett Field

2011-08-29 Thread Steve Walter
The Point Lookout Sandwich Tern has been added to my storm page from
yesterday http://www.hmana.org/steve/Aug28.htm , along with something
completely different. Should I thank the park people for kicking us out of
Jones Beach and making this picture possible? I guess there was some good
reason for keeping the parks closed on this beautiful summer day. There must
still be some hazards. I think the UV index was kind of high today.

Additional site note: Lido Beach Nature Preserve had 4 Black Terns and a
passing by Merlin.

Field

The birding today was certainly not as exciting as yesterday in Irene's
wake, but all in all it was a very good day. I birded with Andrew Baksh and
we were joined by many others. There was a modest flight of diurnal
landbird migrants along the barrier beach. The highlights included

3 Sandwich Terns. Two of these were at Jones Beach West End and another on
the beach at Pt. Lookout.

8 Royal Terns. Scattered singles at various locations.

20+ Black Terns at various locations.

3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the beach at West End.

13 Pectoral Sandpipers at Pt. Lookout in a pool on the lawn near Lido Blvd.

1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Floyd Bennett Field near the pools at the
northwest corner of the runways.

1 juvenile Western Sandpiper (same location)

1 Monk Parakeet at Gilgo. My first ever on the barrier beach.

4 Purple Martins. 2 at West End and 2 at Gilgo.

5 Bank Swallows at various locations.

35 Eastern Kingbirds, migrating in several flocks of roughly 7-10 birds.

Other swallows, Bobolinks, Red-winged Blackbirds and Cedar Waxwings were
prominent in the landbird flight

Mary Normandia and others reported a Whimbrel and a Marbled Godwit in the
swale at West End. The mosquitoes were bad at all the barrier beach
locations, but at West End they can best be described as a ravenous cloud.

[nysbirds-l] White-tailed Tropicbird - Rensselaer County NY

2011-08-29 Thread Jesse Jaycox
August 29, 2011 - A friend just called to report that she found a "tern" on the
side of Presbyterian Hill Road in Stephentown, NY. I asked for a picture and it
turns out that it's a White-tailed Tropicbird. She's trying to find a wildlife
rehabilitator to take it, but not having any luck right now. Does anyone have
any suggestions for that area?

[nysbirds-l] East End Birding (Suffolk Co.)

2011-08-29 Thread ken feustel
We decided to head out east early this morning, in hopes of finding some of the
previously reported Hurricane Irene birds. Our previous experiences with day
old hurricane strays did not bode well: the vast majority of these birds seem
to leave as soon as the storm abates. The one exception to this rule seems to
be Sandwich Tern, which we have seen a few days after a hurricane. Such was the
case today, when arriving at Mecox Inlet our first bird was a Sandwich Tern,
sitting on a pole in Mecox Bay. We eventually observed five more at the cut, as
well as Black Tern (16), Caspian Tern (2), Royal Tern (5)., as well as Common,
Forster's and Least Terns. At Sagaponack Pond we did not see much except for a
flyby Whimbrel and three Black Terns. The road to Hook Pond was closed on the
west side so we drove over to the east side and walked west down the beach
from the parking lot south of the Maidstone Club - the pond was empty. We
decided to try the west side of Napeague Harbor, where we were able to bird for
a half hour before the Town of East Hampton kicked us out (no permit). We
picked up an additional Sandwich Tern, as well as Roseate Tern (1). We had
called ahead and knew that Montauk Point State Park was closed, and traffic was
starting to get heavy, so we packed it in. The day was pretty much what we
expected, but you never know! I Other birders were out east today and they may
have seen some additional species.

[nysbirds-l] late report sootys bridled terns shorham sod fields

2011-08-29 Thread DanoR4
Finaly got power back on to post this report. Yesterday i was able to get
to the shoreham sod fields around 11 30.Immediatly i spotted a large group
of birds hunkered down in a flooded section of the field.Holding the window
scope still in the open field was tough but in the next 15 minutes or so
with the help of a call to S.M. i was able to identify up to 5 bridled and 5
sooty terns.Numerous other terns and dozens of shorebirds were winging all
over the place unfortunatly i wasn't able to identify but by there size and
bill color were possible caspiens.Later my wife, Bob May and Joel Hormon
returned and were able to still see 3bridled and 3 sootys before a perigrine
scattered the birds. The terns never returned. This morning only the usual
suspects plus 5 tvs drying there wings on the ground and a red fox that ran
across the sod fields.Dan Heglund Rocky point

[nysbirds-l] NE shore of Lake Erie

2011-08-29 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
On Sunday, August 28th, eight well seasoned BOS birders met at 7:00 am at
the Vermont and Busti staging area for the annual Buffalo Ornithological
Society August Field Trip for Shorebirds and Early Warblers. After crossing
the Peace Bridge, our more than competent leader, Doug Happ led us to Jager
Rocks at the source of the Niagara River in Fort Erie. Although Hurricane
Irene did not blow in any jagers, we did see an Osprey, a Great Black-back
Gull, an American Black Duck, and eight Caspian Terns. Going west on Highway
3 from Fort Erie we turned south on Golf Course Road to Morgan’s Point.
Doug found us three Sanderlings along the shoreline of Lake Erie. In the
bushes we found Black-and white Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Magnolia
Warbler, Yellow Warbler, and Canada Warbler.
Proceeding westward along the lake we reached Rock Point Provincial Park.
There we enjoyed studying five Semipalmated Plovers, about 15 Semipalmated
Sandpipers, three Least Sandpipers, a Western Sandpiper, and a White-rumped
Sandpiper until a Peregrine Falcon swooped over the shoreline chasing
every single shorebird and a Double-crested Cormorant, for good measure. On
Mohawk Island we could see about 400 fastidious Double-crested Cormorants and
a cloud of at least 2,000 Common Terns. There were two good pockets of
warbler in the vegetation seeking shelter from the strong north winds and were
able to observe Palm Warbler, three Blackburnian Warblers, three American
Redstarts, three Black-throated Green Warblers, two Cape May Warblers,
Bay-breasted Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, two
Nashville Warbler, two Chestnut-sided Warblers, Pine Warbler, and Magnolia
Warbler. We also encountered four Red-eyed Vireos, Philadelphia Vireo,
Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, Carolina Wren, and an Olive-sided Flycatcher.
Doug then guided us two kilometers north to the Mosaic ponds and showed us
Hooded Merganser, four Green-winged Teal, Greater Yellowlegs, Semipalmated
Plovers, and seven unmarked Great Egrets. Traveling were seven kilometers
on Canal Bank Road we turned north for a kilometer on Hutchinson Road to
Poth Road where we 57 Killdeer, nine Black-bellied Plovers, and the Whimbrel.
For the day we tallied 72 species including eleven shorebird species and
fifteen warbler species.

I hope some non-member birders join us next year.

Best Wishes for Great Birding

Re: [nysbirds-l] More on the Black-necked Stilt

2011-08-29 Thread Robert Lewis
I looked for the Black-necked Stilt this morning, Monday, about 10:30.  No
luck.  The storm created pool where the bird was has disappeared.  There are
workmen in there now.
In case you want to try for it, drive west on Beekman Avenue.  You will see the
huge abandoned GM site on your right.  Keep going and follow the road as it
swings south.   There is plenty of parking all along here.
You want the westernmost spot.  You will see a new apartment complex, Ichabod's
Landing.  IMMEDIATELY north of the blue and gold sign is a paved sidewalk.
Take it farther west.  Just past the first building is a gate in the fence to
your right.  It is not locked.  We went through there yesterday.  Today, there
are workmen.  Anyway, the bird was standing next to a big yellow backhoe that
has not moved since yesterday.  The pool is gone.
Farther east there are many other pools and ponds in the old GM site.  I didn't
see it, but who knows?
Thanks to Evan Mark for coming upon this amazing rarity.

John,

Don't feel too bad. Jean and I headed down to Jones beach after being
alerted to the goodies, and after dipping on the Caspian @ Flushing

At Jones we were alerted to the parkies chasing off some cars, so we
didn't go to where a lot of good stuff was seen, instead trying field
10. There was shelter from the wind, and I saw one wilsons storm-peterel.

after another call, we got "braver" and met Eric, Jeff, Ian, and Donna
at the CGS @ west end 2. The highlight was a Sandwich tern Eric Spotted.

after another call, we got braver and met Eric, Jeff, Ian, and Donna
at the CGS @ west end 2. The highlight was a Sandwich tern Eric Spotted.

[nysbirds-l] Storm Casualties

2011-08-29 Thread Paul Sweet
Just a reminder to all that the AMNH is interesting in receiving any
specimens of rarities found after the storm. AMNH has required
permits for NY and NJ. If in doubt please call me.

Thanks, Paul

[nysbirds-l] Monday Birding - Jones Beach area and Floyd Bennett Field

2011-08-29 Thread Seth Ausubel

[nysbirds-l] Photos of Yesterdays Terns

2011-08-29 Thread Luke Ormand
I put up a blog post with photos of the Black Terns and Royal Terns I found
yesterday in Hampton Bays along the shores of the Peconic Bay and the
Shinnecock Inlet. I had a photo of a Sandwhich Tern but seemed to have
misplaced it. For those interested:
