[nysbirds-l] Ferd's Bog and Shallow Lake Trail

2012-03-27 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Greetings all,
Today, on my first visit to these two locations I saw:

Ferd's Bog:
1 Black-backed Woodpecker
2 Gray Jay
2 Golden-crowned Kinglets

heard only:
- White-winged Crossbill
- Evening Grosbeak (I spent time on trying to find and photograph it, but was
not successful. It could have been my first...)

- Common Raven

and there were of course also many Black-capped Chickadees and Pine Siskins.

The Black-backed Woodpecker and one of the Gray Jays were very
cooperative and even posed in the same tree for a while:

Along the Shallow Lake Trail:

1 White-winged Crossbill (out in the open in a dead pine right by the three log
bridge - great views)

1 Ruffed Grouse (flushed next to the trail about 1/4 mile from the Lake)

On the Lower Pond there was one male Ring-billed Duck.

While driving in I saw one Pileated Woodpecker flying over Unca's Road and two
Ruffed Grouse crossed the road in front of me.

All in all a beautiful, especially for me - a city dweller visiting the North
for a few days.

[nysbirds-l] Newburgh Waterfront

2012-03-27 Thread Curt McDermott

Hi All,
Today on my way home, I stopped at the Newburgh waterfront to do some
"speed birding" for Gulls. Within 10 seconds, I had a first year Iceland Gull
sitting on the Pilings just south of Torches Restaurant. Nothing else of note.

Good Birding,
 Curt McDermott
