[nysbirds-l] Origins of Barnacle Geese in NYS - a challenging and changing topic

2012-10-24 Thread Angus Wilson
Gabriel Willow has touched on an annual puzzle for those who worry
about such things, namely the question of provenance: is it a natural
vagrant or a wandering escape? This of course should not detract from
the enjoyment of seeing and reporting these attractive birds, which I
encourage everyone to do, hence the separate subject line.

For waterfowl like Barnacle Goose, there is no simple answer because
it is clear both scenarios apply and often one has to make a judgement
call on which seems most likely. Clearly wild Barnacles _ DO _ make it
to New York. This is reflected in the acceptance of the majority of
recent reports submitted for review, a treatment shared by several
neighboring states. There are several factors that go into this. First
there is a well-defined seasonal pattern of occurrence in the
Northeast, consistent with birds coming down the west (rather than
east) coast of the North Atlantic from their summer nesting grounds in
the high-arctic, second there has been a steady growth in wild
populations due to increased protection on both breeding and wintering
grounds and third, the impact of climate change on the ecology of the
high arctic. These correlates are bolstered by a handful of band
recoveries (compelling evidence), including photographed in the Bronx
in late November 2010 that had originally been banded in Scotland
(NYSARC 2010-82-A/C).

So far, so good. The fly in the ointment, however, is that Barnacles
are also quite popular with waterfowl collectors; they are a very
handsome species and undemanding in terms of upkeep. Regrettably, not
all collectors mark their birds appropriately hence it is sometimes
difficult to tell whether a bird is an escape (or even a deliberate
release). A quick search of the internet will turn up birds for sale
in NY State or nearby. Examples of free flying ex-captive Barnacles,
including one or two family groups, are known and have been shown to
range widely. Sometimes it is known where they come from, other times
it is not. For instance in 2009 a Barnacle Goose was discovered on the
Olcott Piers (Niagara Co.) in late September - already goose migration
season in western NY - and turned out to be banded. Bill Watson
managed to read the band and discovered (presumably to his dismay)
that it was an escape from a private aviary in Delevan, New York,
about 60 miles south of Olcott (see NYSARC 2009-60-A). Drat! Along
similar lines, Barnacles are sometimes found in the northeast during
the summer. These cases are less clear cut but are more suggestive of
escapes perhaps than of natural vagrants. Wild Barnacle Geese
generally have a strong migratory urge and should be further north at
this time of year. One recent example of a summer bird is an unbanded
individual that found in Alexandria Bay, Jefferson Co in July 2011
(NYSARC 2011-97-A).

This is a fascinating topic and for those wishing to delve deeper I
would recommend reading the discussions that accompany reports
submitted to NYSARC published in the Committee's annual reports. A
good place to start is with the 2010 birds, including the individual
mentioned above that was banded as a wild bird in Scotland:
http://www.nybirds.org/NYSARC/Reports/NYSARC2010.html

>From there one might want to read the Barnacle Goose entry in the 2006
Annual Report, which marked a significant switch in NYSARC's thinking
based on the mounting evidence for natural occurrence:
http://www.nybirds.org/NYSARC/Reports/NYSARC2006.html

A full compendium of documented sightings received by NYSARC, with
links to the relevant Annual Reports reports is here:
http://www.nybirds.org/NYSARC/HistData/BRNG.htm

Providing reports on _ ALL _ Barnacle Goose sightings to eBird and
NYSARC regardless of season, adds to the dataset and helps inform our
collective decisions.

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose late report

2012-10-24 Thread Rob Jett
For anyone venturing into Prospect Park tomorrow in search of the Barnacle
Goose, the following late day report came in from John Ascher:

"The Barnacle Goose was by the Rustic Shelter with 18 [Canada Goose] at 5:50
but at 6:05 the flock flew towards [Brooklyn Botanic Garden] and then turned
around and left park over Greenwood Ave headed in direction of [Green-Wood
Cemetery]".

If it isn't found near Prospect Lake in the morning, I would recommend checking
out Green-Wood Cemetery, especially the small lake "Sylvan Water". Free maps
are available at the main entrance.

Good birding,

Rob

[nysbirds-l] big coastal flight near/over NY, NY

2012-10-24 Thread Andrew Farnsworth
Good evening all,
For those in the greater metropolitan New York area, there is a substantial
movement of birds (and bats and insects) occurring this evening. The
distribution of the movement is rather limited, geographically speaking,
given the proximity of high pressure to the NE and a stalled front to the
SE, but many birds are aloft. Flight calling is happening in the overcast
and artificially lit sky - numerous White-throated and Savannah Sparrows,
Hermit Thrush, 2-3 Gray-cheeked Thrushes, and a number of other species.
It's also possible to see birds against the clouds around uplit buildings
(as well as bats and more than a few moths and a mantid) - Northern
Flicker, numerous small and medium sized passerines, a cuckoo.

Good birding,
Andrew

[nysbirds-l] Crows on the prowl

2012-10-24 Thread Barbara S Glanz
Two crows drew the attention of several neighbors around 7:00 am this morning
in Bayport; they were seemingly signaling, loudly and proudly, that they had
successfully torn apart our neighbor's feathered "vulture" from her Halloween
yard display. An ugly scene of black feathers and styrofoam remained.

[nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Barnacle Goose 10/24/12 Brooklyn

2012-10-24 Thread Alexander Wilson
A BARNACLE GOOSE was on the Lake in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park today.
It was first seen with a group of Canada Geese along the Peninsula
shore at about 10:30 am, not long after a rain shower let up. Being
without a field guide, and unexperienced with the species, I gave a
description to Doug Gochfeld by phone, and he said it sounded good.
Later observed on land, it showed no bands or missing toes; I believe
that recent analysis of vagrant goose occurrence patterns suggests
that most are probably legitimate wild birds. According to subsequent
postings the bird was still present to this evening. A few pictures
are posted at:

http://www.digitalmediatree.com/arboretum/barnacle/

Other birds of note in Prospect included two VESPER SPARROWS among
continued good numbers of sparrows, continued PINE SISKINS, and a
NASHVILLE WARBLER.

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park 10/24

2012-10-24 Thread Ed Gaillard
A short stroll in the gloom around 2pm showed me nothing but pigeons,
sparrows (White-Throated and House), and a couple of catbirds, until I
reached the northeast corner of the plaza in front of the library.
There I was greeted by an Ovenbird strolling unconcernedly around and
under the tables where people were eating lunch. Then it decided that
the best route to its next destination was right through my legs.
Never seen one act like that before. Quite charming.

A couple of Ruby-Crowned Kinglets were in the trees there, and a pair
of Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers showed up after a few minutes.

2012-10-24 Thread Elizabeth D Poole

The Barnacle Goose was still present in a flock of about 20 Canada Geese in
the vicinity of West Island up until about 4:00 PM. At exactly 4:02 PM the
entire flock took off slowly, turned over the Vanderbilt Playground and headed
in the direction of Greenwood Cemetery.

The Barnacle Goose in Prospect Park was still present as of 1pm. It was feeding
with a flock of Canada Geese on the grass opposite the Peristyle, about 50
yards south of the shore behind Three Sisters Island. This is the area of the
park nearest the Parade Grounds. Here are the coordinates:

40°39'13.57"N

The closest place to park is along Parkside Avenue, near Parade Place. The
closest mass transit is the Parkside Avenue stop on the "Q" train.

Alex Wilson is currently looking at what he thinks is a Barnacle Goose on
Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn, Kings County. His description sounds good
and he has taken photos.

It is currently hanging out with some Canada's in the center of the lake.

[nysbirds-l] eBird data and Kingbird Regional Reports

2012-10-24 Thread tigger64
Using Chris Wood's excellent discussion about the complexities of eBird data
(on the NYSBirds list) as a segue...

Long-time Regional Editor Bill Purcell (Region 5) is passing the torch and Matt
Perry and I have agreed to take over. eBird records for a season number
between 20,000 to 200,000 depending on the number of observers in the Region.
To help in analyzing this data I have written a program in VISUAL Basic to
perform various sorting and logical functions, including evaluating records in
the split counties where the Regional boundary does not follow county lines.
The program also generates maximum and average counts, first-of-season,
last-of-season, contributor lists, species category evaluation, validity, and
much more.

With a full month left before the end of the Fall reporting period, I'm going
to send an e-mail to Regional Editors outlining the program, what it needs as
input, what it generates as output, and all the other Frequently Asked
Questions. Those that wish to use the output data will have time to become
familiar with the format and look for errors (none known as of version 1.11),
idiosyncrasies, shortcomings, etc. There are many capabilities planned, and I
hope it well help in reducing the large number of records to a managable
summary.

The program is parametrically-driven and functions both to generate
Kingbird-specific data, but can equally well be a general-purpose
data-evaluation tool. Regional Editors I know about will receive an e-mail in
the next few days. If you do not receive it, or have an interest in the
subject generally, please e-mail me below and I will add you to the list.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Barnacle Goose on Prospect Park Lake...

2012-10-24 Thread Andrew Baksh
Shane Blodgett reported that Alex Wilson was observing a possible Barnacle
Goose on Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn NY. I forwarded Shane's post 23
minutes ago from EbirdNYC, but it has not yet shown up on the NYSlist

works. My apologies if you see a duplicate message from me if and when the

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose follow-up

2012-10-24 Thread Rob Jett
The Barnacle Goose in Prospect Park was still present as of 1pm. It was feeding
with a flock of Canada Geese on the grass opposite the Peristyle, about 50
yards south of the shore behind Three Sisters Island. This is the area of the
park nearest the Parade Grounds. Here are the coordinates:

40°39'13.57N
73°58'1.54W

The closest place to park is along Parkside Avenue, near Parade Place. The
closest mass transit is the Parkside Avenue stop on the Q train.

Good birding,

Rob

Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose in Prospect Park

2012-10-24 Thread Gabriel Willow
I am currently looking at the Barnacle Goose as well, it's sort of by itself
near some Canada Geese by the boat moored in the Lake.

Looks like a nice crisp adult bird.

I assume some discussion of its provenance will ensue... Does anyone know how
many waterfowl collections there are around the northeast? It seems possible to
me, given that migratory populations of Canada Geese are moving through right
now, that a Barnacle Goose from Greenland could've met up with a flock and
wandered this way.

I guess we should look for bands if it hops out of the water to graze... I
assume most captive waterfowl would be banded?

Also saw a few Shoveler Ruddy Duck on the Lake, and a Field Sparrow and very
late Veery on the nearby lawn of the Peninsula, and I'm hearing Siskins calling
right now.

Oh and yesterday in Central Park, spotted an American Tree Sparrow and 4 Field
Sparrows with a flock of Chippies up on the grassy area by 103rd st on the West
Side... Now I just need a Clay-colored for a Spizella collection!

Good birding indeed,

Gabriel Willow

the Canada Goose flock

Thanks to Janet Zinn, here are photos you can view on her facebook

[nysbirds-l] Crows on the prowl

2012-10-24 Thread Barbara S Glanz
Two crows drew the attention of several neighbors around 7:00 am this morning
in Bayport; they were seemingly signaling, loudly and proudly, that they had
successfully torn apart our neighbor's feathered vulture from her Halloween
yard display. An ugly scene of black feathers and styrofoam remained.
