[nysbirds-l] 12/9 C. Redpolls Pelham Bay Park, Bronx

2012-12-10 Thread Richard Aracil

Hi,

Yesterday, I visited the Southern end of Pelham Bay Park
where I was pleasantly surprised by a flock of 7 Common Redpolls. The
flock was aloft most of the time and seemed to be roaming a wide area.
The 7 disappeared and resurfaced a few times throughout my walk. Later
on, I stumbled across an 8th Redpoll foraging busily in a patch of
mugwort. Unfortunately, this bird looked a little under the weather as
it only flushed a few feet when I initially found it (almost walked into
it!), twice was seen briefly huddling in the roots of an upturned
shrub and seemed to be "panting" a bit.

[nysbirds-l] 12/10-Brooklyn: Black Brant, White-winged Crossbills

2012-12-10 Thread fresha2411
This afternoon there was a single "Black" Brant on the ballfields at Marine
Park in Brooklyn. It was with ~3350 "Atlantic" Brant. There were also a couple
of duskier Atlantic-types that were interesting, but I didn't spend too much
time trying to turn things into "Gray-bellied" Brant. This is the 3rd Black
Brant seen in this area of Brooklyn this year, with the others being in early
January (Floyd Bennett Field), and on October 29 (Marine Park Golf Course).
There were also ~500 Ring-billed Gulls walking around on the wet fields, and
more were streaming in as I left. The only other species of gull there was
Herring (of which there were only about 5).

In the late afternoon, 4 calling White-winged Crossbills flew over me while I
was on the socked-in-fog boardwalk in Coney Island, near 36th Street. They were
heading west.

My eBird list from Marine Park is here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12265923

I will post photos of the Black Brant later, and embed them in the checklist.

Also of interest from last week: Shane Blodgett and I came across two Snow
Goose x Brant hybrids on the shore of Jamaica Bay just north of Canarsie Pier
on 12/5.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Snow geese in Yorktown Heights, NY

2012-12-10 Thread Thomas Rhindress
Was out in the yard stacking wood and had a flock of ~70 snow geese fly
over the yard. All white morph as far as I could see (no binocs and
misty). Flock was in a broken V, behaving as though they were searching for
a landing site. Flying very low, came in from NE and circled yard heading
NW. There are a couple of water bodies nearby that may be the intended
landing spot. Birders in northern Westchester/Putnam County might want to
keep a lookout for where they land. I live just south of the Taconic/Rte
132/Rte 6 intersection

[nysbirds-l] CORE, OCWA, HOWR, INBU ++ @ Kissena Park Queens County...

2012-12-10 Thread Andrew Baksh
A drizzling but pleasant morning of birding at Kissena Park in Queens
yielded a few notable birds that would be a nice addition to the QCBC
Christmas Count. Some of these birds were also seen this morning by Eric
Miller.

Highlights included *Common Redpoll* (2) at least three were seen yesterday
by Eric and I believe Jeff Ritter as well. *Orange-crowned Warbler *(1) a
continuing bird. *Indigo Bunting* (1); Eric Miller had two of them this
AM. *House Wren* (1), there are at least 2 of them around according to
intelligence sharing with Eric and *American Kestrel* (1).

Good Birding in the rain!

[nysbirds-l] South Shore Nature Center Information

2012-12-10 Thread princessjudyann

Sorry
for not sending enough information the first time.

The
SSNC is 206 acres of land owned by the Town of Islip (thanks to the generosity
of the Decker Orr family), Suffolk County (it is unknown if there is a legal
agreement between the Town and the County), and land leased from the Nature
Conservancy.

The
legal issues are being handled by lawyers at this time.  However, I do believe
the Town is legally
forbidden from selling the property.

If the
Town of Islip does not live up to the lease agreement with the Nature
Conservancy, that portion of the land will revert back to the Conservancy.

So far
all the Town has said is that they can’t afford it.  All budgetary line items
regarding the SSNC
have been removed from the 2013 budget.

I’m not
a biologist so I cannot say what will happen to the environment if the
building, which houses the museum downstairs and the naturalist’s living
quarters upstairs, boardwalks, and trails are abandoned and left to
deteriorate.  My first concern is vandalism.  The Great South Bay Audubon
Society is the
steward of a County park that has an unoccupied historic building.  I can
attest to the vandalism issues and the
SSNC is even more remote than this park.

I can
only assume that the Town of Islip will close the entire preserve and restrict
access.  Allowing the public to have
unrestricted access to an abandoned building and trails and boardwalks not
maintained and repaired is a recipe for disaster.

It
would be very unfortunate to have the SSNC closed.  It offers residents and
nonresidents the
opportunity to experience and learn about Long Island ecology.  This is the
only tract of land on Long Island
that has eight uninterrupted habitats including upland and wetland woods,
freshwater ponds and mars, and saltwater marsh.
The center offers affordable school programs, family programs, and
summer nature camps.  As I mentioned
previously, the SSNC is an area included in the Captree Christmas Bird Count
and has been the site of bird banding providing invaluable date.

The Town of Islip is holding its regularly scheduled
board meeting tomorrow, December 11th at 2 pm at Town Hall, 655 Main
St, Islip.  Hopefully we will have a full house of people
willing to speak in support of the SSNC and perhaps the Town will provide us
with more information.  So far any
correspondence from the GSBAS has been met with silence.

Thank
you for your patience and time.

Davis, PresidentGreat
South Bay Audubon Society

Re: [nysbirds-l] South Shore Nature Center, East Islip CLOSING

2012-12-10 Thread Elizabeth D Poole
Are they closing a building or access to the entire area?
Is the area protected as a mapped park, either in the Town of Islip or the
county or state?
Does the Town have a plan to sell the property or repurpose it or are they
simply closing access because they can't afford to have staff present?
If it is a dedicated park, it might require State legislation to alienate
(sell) it.

(sell) it.

Judy
Davis, PresidentGreat
South Bay Audubon Society

[nysbirds-l] Snow geese in Yorktown Heights, NY

2012-12-10 Thread Thomas Rhindress
Was out in the yard stacking wood and had a flock of ~70 snow geese fly
over the yard. All white morph as far as I could see (no binocs and
misty). Flock was in a broken V, behaving as though they were searching for
a landing site. Flying very low, came in from NE and circled yard heading
NW. There are a couple of water bodies nearby that may be the intended
landing spot. Birders in northern Westchester/Putnam County might want to
keep a lookout for where they land. I live just south of the Taconic/Rte
132/Rte 6 intersection

to the location are as follows.

To get there, Google: Sampson State Park. You will drive into the park entrance
(Sampson State Park Rd.) heading due West. You will encounter a large rotary.
Take this around to the third exit, basically, continue heading due West.
Take this to the end of the roadway to the T-intersection with East Lake Road.
Make a right-hand turn onto East Lake Road. Drive almost one mile North, to the
point where you can see Seneca Lake to the North, beyond a green gate and
residential houses outside of the Park. Pull over and walk around the area to
the South of the green gate; especially the area about 200-300 feet South of
the green gate.

feeder on Carpenter Road near DeRuyter.
12/7: The GLAUCOUS, ICELAND and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were again
located at the Madison County Landfill. Also noted was a possible THAYER’S GULL.

Oneida County

12/8: A single PINE GROSBEAK was seen atop a tree in Holland Patent.

Extralimital

12/9: A TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE was found at Sampson State Park off of Rt.
96A on the east side of Seneca Lake south of Geneva in Seneca County. The
bird was relocated and seen by many birders today also. More specific
instructions to the location are as follows.

[nysbirds-l] 12/10-Brooklyn: Black Brant, White-winged Crossbills

2012-12-10 Thread fresha2411
This afternoon there was a single Black Brant on the ballfields at Marine
Park in Brooklyn. It was with ~3350 Atlantic Brant. There were also a couple
of duskier Atlantic-types that were interesting, but I didn't spend too much
time trying to turn things into Gray-bellied Brant.

Goose x Brant hybrids on the shore of Jamaica Bay just north of Canarsie Pier
on 12/5.

Later
on, I stumbled across an 8th Redpoll foraging busily in a patch of
mugwort. Unfortunately, this bird looked a little under the weather as
it only flushed a few feet when I initially found it (almost walked into
it!), twice was seen briefly huddling in the roots of an upturned
shrub and seemed to be panting a bit.
