[nysbirds-l] Mt. Sinai Harbor, Suffolk County
In early afternoon, the northern part of the harbor, viewed from Cedar Town Park, hosted a small flock (about 5) of male Common Mergansers while an adult Red-shouldered Hawk roosted in the nearby cedars adjoining the boat ramp before being rousted by Fish Crows. [nysbirds-l] Miller's Pond, Smithtown (Suffolk)
There were probably close to one thousand geese on Miller's Pond this afternoon. I managed to pick out a lone CACKLING GOOSE standing on a floating chunk of ice. Dave Lamagna and I watched the goose for about 30 minutes. It was never joined by a 2nd Cackling and I'm wondering if this might be a third bird (in addition to Brent's report yesterday).Given the numbers of Canada Geese this is a very likely possibility. I'm also happy to report that I observed and recorded 6 Canada Geese, all with neck collars, from the program in west Greenland. Indian Hills Country Club, in Northport, had some decent goose activity. Solid numbers of Canada's and a single Snow Goose, all visible along Breeze Hill Rd. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39025168@N07/ Best, Derek Rogers Sayville -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] SHINNECOCK INLET/ DUNE ROAD, L.I. BIRDS, DEC. 24th
Hi All,Dick Belanger and I birded the Southampton side of Dune Road east to Shinnecock Inlet. The Hampton Bays side of the Inlet continues to be for all intents and birding purposes, off limits due to the ongoing dredge work there. We had a Crossbill flock,[ 15 Whitewinged], along the road a quarter mile from the Inlet. At the parking area shoreline we found 7 Dunlin with a few Sanderling. On the long sandbar within the bay there was a group of close to 200 Sanderling and 38 Common Eider. Across the inlet on the west jetty there were 2 feeding Purple Sandpiper and 2 Great Cormorant on the tower directly above them. Good numbers of gulls are gathering at the torrent of water and sand exiting the dredge pipe at the shore further west. There were 25 Bonaparte Gulls in the breakers there. Small numbers of Horned Grebes were evident on both bay and ocean. [nysbirds-l] Common Redpoll: Jones Beach West End
In the median, I was rewarded with great views of 5 Common Redpolls. Also, at Colonial Springs Golf Course where the Barnacle Goose was found yesterday, a guard kicked me out and I was unable to search for the goose. [nysbirds-l] Huntington Harbor Tufted Duck & Kissena Park
The TUFTED DUCK swam out from the docks where it has been spending recent nights around 7AM this morning. I first viewed the bird through the chain link fence at the north end of the town parking area. The bird remained in good view in the harbor for approximately 20 minutes before disappearing behind a docked boat. Later, back in Queens, I stopped at Kissena Corridor and was able to find both the previously reported INDIGO BUNTING and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.
