[nysbirds-l] "Saving the best for last" !
This afternoon, I spent ~ 2 hours riding Town of Riverhead roads in search of a Lapland Longspur. Missed it, as well as most of the species that have (because of our recent heavy snow storm) been found feeding along roadsides. It was a quiet day, except for the raptors encountered along the way. In Wading River, a Red-tailed Hawk and 1 Merlin, with 3 other redtails seen while heading east to Jamesport's Iron Pier Beach. The highlight of the day occurred while en-route home, when an adult N.Goshawk flew across Penny's La., Northville. [nysbirds-l] Iceland Gull & etc., NYC 2/13
Wednesday, 13 February, 2013 At Central Park, in Manhattan (N.Y. City) an Iceland Gull was again at the Lake, and after taking bread from passersby (tourists, not birders, at about 1 p.m.), the smutty / winter plumage gull moved out to the still-iced-over portion, nearer to W. 77 Street. A number of other birds seen in the vicinity (within half-a-mile) in Central at mid-day included American Woodcock (1), Rusty Blackbirds (2), Red-winged Blackbird, Brown Thrasher (an overwinterer), Hermit Thrushes (at least 3 different individuals, all wintering), Swamp & (several) "red" Fox Sparrows, plus a wide variety of other expected and typical species for Feb. - with a very good count of Black-capped Chickadee and Tufted Titmouse, as has been all thru the fall & winter seasons.
