[nysbirds-l] Hooded Warbler - Southards Pond

2013-04-28 Thread Peter Morris
The main highlight of two trips to Southards Pond today was a stunning male
Hooded Warbler. The bird sang on and off for a while in the morning but
unfortunately remained very elusive in the wood around the south east of be
pond.

Other highlights included 1 Ovenbird, 1 Northern Parula, around 15 Yellow
Warblers, 10 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 1 Blue-headed Vireo and a female
Bufflehead on the pond.

[nysbirds-l] Smith's Longspur in Ulster County NY

2013-04-28 Thread Gail Benson
This afternoon Tom Burke and I spotted a breeding-plumaged male Smith's
Longspur at Shawangunk Grasslands NWR in Ulster County. The bird was
watched running through clumps of grass and it was flushed twice and
rattled both times. While waiting for more birders to arrive, the bird
disappeared and despite extensive searching could not be relocated. It was
recognizably photographed. For a brief description, the bird had a black
facial triangle surrounding a white cheek patch and a white supercilium.
The underparts were all orange colored, as was the collar. The outer tail
feathers were extensively white. Despite not being refound, the bird
presumably remains there. The bird's location was northeast of the interior
parking area, between that area and the bird blind closest to the Town
Park. Good luck if you go, hopefully additional photos can be obtained.
Gai Benson and Tom Burke.

Between 4:45 and 5:30pm , I had great views of Yellow-throated Warbler in

[nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: Parasitic Jaeger and wayward Boat-tailed Grackles

2013-04-28 Thread Angus Wilson
Watching from Amagansett (Suffolk Co.) this morning I caught the tail end
of a decent waterbird flight along the oceanfront with hundreds of scoter
and loons plus a good showing of gannets. In prior flights, the vast
majority of gannets have been full adults heading for their nesting
colonies in Quebec, New Brunswick and beyond but today roughly a third were
subadults. A highlight was my first PARASITIC JAEGER of the season, a nice
light-morph adult powering eastward low over the water. There was also a
clear movement of LAUGHING GULLS, which are still scarce out here, along
with some Rough-winged and Barn Swallows moving east along the dunes.

The birds of the day however were 5 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES (3 males and 2
females) in a marsh along the edge of Napeague Harbor. One of the males was
displaying vigorously, singing both in flight and from the tops of small
bushes, and frequently chasing the two females. Although a familiar sight
in coastal saltmarshes along the south shore of Long Island, this species
is very rare east of Shinnecock Bay and this is the first time I've seen
more than single birds east of the canal. It will be interesting to see if
the Boat-tails linger in the area, potentially extending the known breeding
range 25 miles or so eastwards.

Cheers, Angus Wilson

Red-breasted Nuthatch on the ridge and Eastern Kingbird on the ridge and at

singing around the bay at the north end of the soccer fields.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe no, but other good birds

2013-04-28 Thread kenalla...@earthlink.net
Fellow Birders;
As noted previously by Shane Blodgett, the Say's Phoebe did not seem to
be present at yesterday's location in Prospect Park. Perhaps it is still in
the park, but the area with sumacs was overrun with unleashed dogs; now matter
how well they are behaved, the have to effect a low-foraging bird such as the
phoebe. I was in the area (moving about some) from about 7 a.m.- 11:a.m--
there were many talented birds around, no one reported the phoebe. It is
possible that the bird will return when the canine traffic diminishes during
the week.
On the good side, this was the best day of migration thus far, and I doubt
that anyone left the park disappointed. I enjoyed a dozen species of warbler,
including Ovenbird, Blackburnian, Prairie, Black-throated Blue, and Kentucky,
all of these FOS for me. Also Warbling, Blue-headed, Red-eyed, and White-Eyed
Vireos (the latter two FOS), and FOS Wood and Swainson's Thrush. The latter
struck me as a bit early, but in checking my records I see that I've seen it
once this early in NY-- I see species this by the thousands in passage in
Panama, have no doubt as to my i.d.. It was a glorious day, extralimital
species (absent) aside! Happy birding to all.

[nysbirds-l] Say's Phoebe Prospect Park - late afternoon update from 4-27...

2013-04-28 Thread Andrew Baksh
Since no one posted from late yesterday, I figured I would. The Say's
Phoebe was enjoyed by many yesterday afternoon as it actively did its
flycatching thing around the Sumac area. , but suddenly around 5:05 p.m. it
picked up and flew off heading in a South Easterly direction.

Despite coverage by several birders, we did not locate the bird and when I
left Prospect Park around 6:30 p.m. it still had not been re-found.

A good strategy in looking for this bird today, might be to start at the
Sumac location (see Peter's link below). A very nice bird for Brooklyn and
many thanks to Tom Burke and Gail Benson who stayed with the bird until I
showed up after making the run from LI.

A few photos can be viewed here.

[nysbirds-l] Inwood Hill Park, NYC, Sunday 04/28

2013-04-28 Thread Joe DiCostanzo
I also had no luck with the Yellow-throated Warbler this morning.

The only things of note I had to add to Nadir's and Gerard's reports were
Red-breasted Nuthatch on the ridge and Eastern Kingbird on the ridge and at
the north end of the soccer fields and both Baltimore and Orchard Orioles
singing around the bay at the north end of the soccer fields.

[nysbirds-l] Yellow Throated Warbler in Prospect park

2013-04-28 Thread nidhin cyril
Between 4:45 and 5:30pm , I had great views of Yellow-throated Warbler in
Prospect park near the breeze hill. The Yellow Throated Warbler was seen
near the canopy of the trees near the Lullawater between the feeders and
rustic arbor.
