[nysbirds-l] Monday/ Tuesday: North and South Forks: King Eider, Great Comorants, ducks

2014-02-04 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I took a trip out to Montauk and Orient Point before the snow started. I
didn't let the snowstorm stop me - I managed 21 species Monday - nothing
unusual except a lot of robins - they were the most abundant songbird
during the 2 days. (~120) Of course Tuesday was the better day - I focused
on the bays and ocean. Between both days had a total of 43 species -
highlights were:

King Eider female - west of the jetty at Shinnecock Inlet
Great Comorant: 2 on the jetty tower at Lake Montauk inlet, 3 on the tower
at Shinnecock Inlet
Bonaparte Gull - by the jetty at Lake Montauk inlet
Turkeys - 4 North side of Montauk Highway by Wainscott Stone Road
Red-Winged Blackbirds - West Lake Drive, Montauk
Snow Buntings and House Finches at Orient State Park near the parking lot

Red Tailed Hawks (5) and a Sharp Shinned Hawk were along Route 48 and Route
25 - I took a pic of another raptor but need time to ID it

Although all 3 scoters and Common Eider were present around most locations,
the largest numbers I saw were definitely by Shinnecock Inlet.

Common Loons seemed to be everywhere. I tried looking for alcids at Montauk
Point but struck out. On an odd note, I only saw 4 House Sparrows and 2
Mallards the entire trip.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owls in the Netherlands

2014-02-04 Thread leormand .
As has been previously reported through this listserv and a Canadian blog -
some snowy owls made it onto a freighter that left NY and hugged the coast
near Canada before heading to Europe. At least two of these birds are in
the Netherlands and are being regularly photographed - here is a link to a
photographers blog about the birds for those interested:

[nysbirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Shrike

2014-02-04 Thread Seth Ausubel
A few hours birding the Jones Beach strip today produced a dark-morph
Rough-legged Hawk on the marsh viewed from Gilgo, Town of Babylon, and the
Jones Beach Northern Shrike. The shrike was in the dunes south of the ramp
between the eastbound Bay Parkway and the eastbound Ocean Parkway, about 1/4
mile east of the Nature Center at West End 1. We also saw a Snowy Owl and a
Nothern Harrier tussling over a Black Duck carcass in the marsh between Cedar
Beach Marina and Gilgo. The owl won the prize.

RE: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday - NO Tuesday

2014-02-04 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hi all,
I looked for Anya's Kumlien/Thayer's gull today around noon, but it was not
to be found. The snow we received yesterday has received the loafing area
for gulls and numbers were down. All the birds present on the reservoir
were hanging around a small patch of open water around the fountain.

The only surprise was a Great Blue Heron that visited for a few minutes.

good winter birding,

I just did a quick, but pertinent update to my current running feature on
adult Iceland Gull variation, to add a link to a page I posted a year ago.
The first three pictures on that page are of an unusually dark immature
Iceland type gull at Jones Beach - possibly what the Central Park bird would
look like with better photos.

Re: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
One of the problems I have had with this bird is the uniform instead of two
tone contrast look with the outer primaries expected on a Thayer's. On the
sleeping photo, although it looks like a bleached looking individual, I would
have a hard time not calling this bird a Thayer's type

In flight it gives a different perspective and the primaries seen in flight
does not show as dark. However, the photos are over exposed and could be
causing some issues here with that so I am not sure.

Kumlien's range makes this a tough one to call based on these photos alone even
if the plumage and tail band seems odd. In addition, the variation in plumage
of Kumlien's makes this even more intriguing and I have seen some photos from
birds upstate this year that look very much like this one.

Photos can lie so more documentation is needed on this bird and definitely
worth tracking down. I hope it is refound and better photos presented for
discussion. Good luck CP birders. Report these birds!!! Even if it is an
Iceland Gull, it is post worthy.

Cheers!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-04 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Anya,

I agree that this is a good candidate for Thayer's b/c of the strong
crescents on the primary tips, the strong tail band and the overall color.
I would love to be able to see the bill, head shape and size in comparison
to Herring Gull to be sure.

Hugh

Cheers!

Apologies for posting late. An immature white-winged gull, possibly a
Thayer's, was on the reservoir Sunday, along with several hundred other
gulls and a definite Kumlien's. There has been quite a bit of debate on
various facebook groups, and I would welcome more opinions. I'm going to
try to re-find the bird tomorrow to get better pictures, as the ones I've
 got are distant and overexposed.
