[nysbirds-l] Softening the blow of tax day
Today was the day to make my annual trip to Bohemia to have our income taxes prepared. Due to Derek Rogers' post re: the Red-necked Grebe he saw at Patchogue Lake yesterday, I took a slight detour en-route, and finally caught up with my 1st of the winter ! The bird is still seen well from 2nd St. (e/o Waverly Ave), although when I arrived, it was more north, toward the middle of the lake, hanging out with 5 Pied-billed Grebes. It then provided me with, what I think was a first, when it picked up and flew to the south end. I can't remember ever seeing this specie fly, and was able to see the white on the inner sections of the leading edge of the wings, as well as with it's neck & head below it's shoulders ! The bird's large size is certainly more pronounced in flight, than when it's on the water. Also, it's breeding plumage is starting to show, as it is with some of the Ruddy Ducks on the lake. In addition, American Coot was represented quite well here, with a total of ~ 85. [nysbirds-l] Argyle Lake, Babylon: Red Necked Grebe still present
Hi Everyone, Following Peter Morris's report (I don't get tired of Red Necked Grebe sightings) I was at the lake today since I haven't seen any RN Grebes before - saw just one today but as Peter noted it was quite a stunner. It was my first time at this spot and it was really nice there...people were out enjoying the nice weather...also saw Mallards, Black Ducks (a lot at this lake), Mute Swans, a pair of Shovelers, 2 Coots, and about 8 Ringed Necked Ducks. Weird analogy, but lately I feel like Angela Lansbury from Murder She Wrote - wherever she went things turn up dead - so again, I found another dead bird... a dead crow in the water - all tangled up in fishing line. Ending on a positive note, the Red Necked Grebe seemed comfortable at the lake despite everyone around the lake - was sleeping most of the time I was there. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
I spent the day at the preserve yesterday and saw a total of fifty (50) species. The pond at Merrick Road was particularly active and covered with ducks, gulls, grebes etc. Adding to Robert Taylor's email, I saw a dead Great Blue Heron next to the Pittsburgh Ave. pond. I saw no obvious trauma, and my initial guess was it was just a victim of the harsh winter. I hope it wasn't killed by someone or their dog. -- Joseph O'Sullivan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
