[nysbirds-l] Marine Parkway Bridge for Henslow's sparrow

2014-11-24 Thread isaac grant
Just a heads up for any and all trying for the sparrow tomorrow. The
bridge is no longer closed as of 5 pm today. It was stuck in the up
position but is back and open for traffic. So no need to detour to the
Crossbay bridge.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow

2014-11-24 Thread Jean Loscalzo
Riis Park, Queens
Monday 11/ /14

Following up on earlier posts, late afternoon had 6 birders looking in the
southeastern field and edges next to the golf course. The bird was finally
located several times, and a few people had decent although quick looks.
Deborah Martin and Steve Schellenger packed it in leaving Bobby Berlingeri,
Bobby Kurtz, Eric Miller and me. As per the tiny URL link Arie Gilbert posted,
the bird was last in the upper left hand area. As it got later (after 4:15)
the bird became more active, moving around and feeding in the shorter brush
along the field edge in front of the fence. We were able to get extended close
looks, and the bird was still active at 4:50pm when we finally left.

A big THANK YOU PAT for finding this bird!

ps a reminder to check on the bridge status before going for this bird, the
Marine Pkwy Bridge was closed for the entire day today.

Left my Starbucks coffee mug at the Kingbird site, if anybody happened to grab
it, hit me up off list. My wife is not happy , this is the second $30 dollar
coffee mug I have given as an offering to the rare bird gods. Thanks!

Very close to the So. parking area of the Community Garden between 2:15
and 3:15pm. I saw the bird as soon as I got out of my car w/pics. I couldn't
get to Riis Pk to look for the Henslow's Sparrow b/c the bridge was closed  due
to a fire.
If you plan a trip, it would be wise to get there before 11am due to
construction going eastbound on the Belt Pky. NP going westbound. Construction
is from 11am -5pm daily. Good luck __._,_.___ Posted by:

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow - Riis Park

2014-11-24 Thread Deborah Martin
The Henslow's Sparrow was seen at about 3:45 PM by 6 birders. All of the
information in David Klauber's post is very helpful and was accurate for what
we observed. The bird was flushed from short low grass in the center of the
field when one birder stepped very close to it. It flew to the edge of the
field on the north side bordering the golf course and remained low in the
taller grass along the anchor fence in a sandy area left of where a Mylar
balloon is caught in the grass. We never saw it fly out but did have brief
views of it that area. It may have flown through the fence to the scrub around
the golf course. Thanks to all who've posted descriptions today - both of the
area and the bridge closure.

FW: [nysbirds-l] Henslow's Sparrow

2014-11-24 Thread David Klauber
a little more info on this bird. Henslow's is a skulker normally, and in
today's wind even more so, keeping low and scurrying between tufts of grass. It
would be (and was) easy to miss even at close range as it ducks into the grass.
When I saw it, and Bob and Ed saw it earlier, they nearly stepped on it, as it
was hiding in the tufts of grass in the middle of this open wet area. I believe
Jacob's group found it in the tall shrubs next to the golf course, and when we
left around 2:30 it flew into the taller grass west of the field, opposite the
golf course. The "field" where it's been seen is just southwest of the
southwest corner of the golf course, almost at Fort Tilden. Bob stuck a large
branch or stick in the middle of the field as a reference point. Today there
were several wet patches, so the habitat probably approached that of Henslow's
breeding territory. I have seen Henslow's before, but never as bright olive as
this bird. The olive head contrasted strongly with the brown and buff marked
back, and the eye ring was fairly prominent. Outstanding find by Pat, and for
me the best of the good run of fall rarities. And special thanks to Bob and Ed
for staying on the bird while I dealt with the traffic and bridge closing.
As noted by Arie, you have to use the bridge at Cross Bay Boulevard to get to
Riis Park

Considering the battery of cameras trained on the very cooperative Cassin's

[nysbirds-l] Henslow's sparrow continues Jacob Riis Park, Queens

2014-11-24 Thread AA Fawkes
Jacob Drucker texted about half an hour ago that he, Nadir Souirgi, and
James Knox have refound the Henslows, in the same area that it was seen
yesterday at the south west corner of the golf course at Jacob Riis park.
It flushed out of the center of the field and then flew towards the fence
by the golf course.

The Brooklyn Cassin's Kingbird shows deeply notched outer primaries (pp
5-10), which I believe are indicative of an adult bird at this date (and
probably a male). The rectrices also
appear truncate (vs. tapered) and of uniform age, also, I think,
implying an adult at this date.

A series of photos here illustrate some of these features:

2014-11-24 Thread Nancy Tognan
The North Shore Audubon Society will hold its monthly program on Tuesday,
November 25, 2014, from 7pm to 9pm, at the Manhasset Public Library, 30
Onderdonk Avenue, Manhasset NY 11030. All are invited, free of charge.

Come join us as Lloyd Spitalnik, an experienced nature photographer, invites
us to join him a in a photographic show on "Four Seasons of NY Birds."
Lloyd knows where all the "good" spots are for sighting and photographing
these sometimes elusive characters of flight and will share these insights
as well as bird photography ethics and just what goes into taking a good
nature photograph.
