[nysbirds-l] eBird Hotspots: Corn Crake Location (Suffolk Co.)

2017-11-07 Thread Ben Cacace
Here are the following shared locations for the Cedar Beach area where the
Corn Crake reports are coming from:

- Cedar Beach Marina
- Cedar Beach, general area (available within 12 hours)
- Oak Beach Marsh (available within 12 hours)

... there should be no need for a generic "stakeout" marker since there are
hotspots that cover the area. A "stakeout" marker should be used when no
hotspots exist in the area. This avoids the creation of multiple personal
locations.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] "Barney Oldfield" rides again !

2017-11-07 Thread robert adamo
It was mid-afternoon when I nonchalantly turned the computer on to see what
was happening, and from then, to ~ 4 PM when I *safely* arrived at "The
Spot" on the Ocean Parkway and saw the "Crazy Crake", the Lord was my
co-pilot ! It was a "perfect storm/ not" of a trip, with no traffic
holdups, no accident, no police "pullovers", and finally, with enough
light*, to see the wonderful gift Ken & Sue presented to us !

Cheers,
Bob

* Weather permitting, I plan on being back in the AM to see the bird in
better light, and maybe even get a good photo or two !

[nysbirds-l] Corn Crake parking suggestion

2017-11-07 Thread David Klauber
Parking is technically illegal along the Ocean Parkway, and in the morning
there are many cars traveling to work along it. Many parked cars are bound to
eventually cause the police to chase people away, especially during rush hour.

A close suggested parking spot is nearby Overlook Beach, just east of Cedar
Beach on the ocean (south side) of the parkway. From there it's a 5-10 minute
walk east. Also, although the bird tolerated fast moving cars, it was very
skittish if it detected people or cars stopping next to it.

For those not familiar with the area this is about a 15 minute drive east of
the Jones Beach water tower, in Suffolk County. Congrats again to the Feustels
for a great find and timely post.

[nysbirds-l] From Crane to Crake

2017-11-07 Thread Steve Walter
My contribution to the photographic record of the Corn Crake can be found at
my web site http://stevewalternature.com/ . Congratulations Ken and Sue on
this spectacular find.

I had a longer trip to get to Cedar Beach than I usually would. I was back
at the Quaker Ridge hawk watch in Greenwich for another 200+ Red-shouldered
Hawk tally. To put that in perspective, the daily high at this site before
this year was 129, and the yearly average was still down at 171 (despite
over 1000 in 2014). I keep seeing them kettle and barrel through in groups
of up to a dozen, yet it's still hard to believe.

And if the day needed more excitement, a group of 3 Sandhill Cranes flew by
to the south of the watch. I posted a picture on the Recent Work page. It's
not a picture I'm proud to show off, but it does say "that really happened".

[nysbirds-l] Corn Crake - History

2017-11-07 Thread Deborah Allen
Robert DeCandido and I spent some time today tracking down as much of the
original historical information on the occurrence of the Corn Crake in our
area...primarily NY State Records. They are provided, with citations below.

Here is a link to an adult female Corn Crake photographed while we were banding
birds in Israel in 2003: https://www.photo.net/photo/1424996

Historical Info from the period 1880-2012:
===
CORN CRAKE Crex crex. In the shop of Messrs. Lucau & Buck, of Sag Harbor, I
found a mounted specimen of this species which I purchased. They bought it
about August 15, 1885 while in the flesh, from a farmer residing near
Amagansett, Suffolk Co. It was, when shot, on an upland or dry meadow, in
company with some Meadow Larks (Sturnella magna). The sex was not ascertained.

Bird Notes from Long Island by William Dutcher
Auk 3 (No. 4): 432-444 (Excerpts) - October-December 1886
===
Crex crex. Corn Crake. -- Since my previous record of this bird on Long Island,
I have had a mounted specimen presented to me by Mr. A. A. Fraser, who "bagged
the bird, 2 November 1880. It was at the foot of the uplands, where they join
the meadows, in heavy cover, with springs running from it."

Auk 5 (2): 177 (April-June 1888) excerpt
BIRD NOTES FROM LONG ISLAND, N. Y.
BY WILLIAM DUTCHER.

12. Corn Crake Crex crex. Capt. Scott gave me the greater portion of the skin
of one of these birds, that had been shot by a boy about 1 Nov 1888 while
shooting quail. It was secured on a low marshy meadow about three miles west of
the point, near the Conklin farm house. This is the third specimen of this
species that I have in my collection from Long Island. For previous records see
The Auk, Vol. III., p. 435, and Vol. V., p.177. In the Ornithologist and
Oologist Vol. XIIL, p. 46, a specimen is recorded from Connecticut. The number
of records of this species from the middle Eastern Atlantic Coast would seem to
indicate that Crex would soon have to be removed from the list of stragglers
and placed among the rare class. William Dutcher

A Winter Trip to Montauk (excerpt)

Forest and Stream 34(11): 206-207 (3 April 1890) excerpt.
===
Crex crex in Maine [1896]. The occurrence of Crex crex near Portland, Me., was
noted in an editorial paragraph of the 'Ornithologist and Oologist,' Vol. XV,
p. 30, as follows: "H. II. Brock reports a specimen of the European Corn Crake
(Crex crex) killed by John Whiting in Falmouth, Me., about four miles from
Portland. Another was shot at the same time, but was so mutilated that it was
thrown away."

I feel that the importance of this capture demands a more detailed statement,
especially in view of the fact that the above notice seems to have been often
overlooked. The bird is an unquestionable Crex crex in extremely fine plumage
and of typical coloration. It not only agrees closely with printed
descriptions, hut with the several European specimens with which I have
compared it. The date of its capture was 14 October 1889, and the locality the
‘Dyke’ Marsh in Falmouth, where so many other rare waders have been taken. It
was shot by Mr. John Whitney, -- not "Whiting." It came into my hands at once,
was preserved by myself, and is now in my collection. Great importance should
not, of course, be attached to the closing sentence of the paragraph above
quoted, which was based on the statements of a gunner not skilled in
identifying birds, though undoubtedly truthful. -- HENRY H. BROCK, Portland, Me.

AUK 13(2): 173-174 (April-June 1896)
===
The Corn Crake in Connecticut [1887]. BY HON. JOHN N. CLARK, SAYBROOK, CONN. In
looking over a Check List made from the A. O. U. Code I find the names of
fifty-one species or varieties of birds enclosed in brackets, and upon
investigation discovered by Rule 3 "that stragglers or accidental visitors not
regarded as components of the North American fauna were to be distinguished by
having their respective numbers in brackets," so that these fifty-one species
are regarded as stragglers or accidental visitors, and every capture of one of
them by an ornithologist is regarded as an interesting event to be triumphantly
recorded for publication.

But how few such triumphs are there in the records! Probably but a small
portion of such captures fall to the lot of the ornithological student.
Seventy-five in a hundred of the sportsmen would dress the rare bird for the
pot, with the common ones, and discuss its flesh instead of its plumage.

Yet such a triumph has been mine; the first specimen of all that list of
stragglers fell into my hands on the 20th of October [1887] last a Corn Crake
(Crex crex), a bird about the size and appearance (if not examined too closely)
of a Woodcock, aside from the beak, which latter more nearly resembles tha

[nysbirds-l] Corn Crake and Black-headed Gull

2017-11-07 Thread Andrew Block
Well it sure was a good day to be a birder!  Went to photograph the
Black-headed Gull at Orchard Beach this early pm and got a 100 or so great
shots of it in the lot.  When I got home at about 12:30pm I saw a Corn Crake
was spotted on the Island so of course dropped everything and zoomed down
there.  Even though there was traffic at the bridge I managed to get down there
before the rain and had great looks at it for about 10 minutes!  How exciting!!
Never thought I'd see this bird in the US.  Wow, what a find.  Good job by the
finders.

[nysbirds-l] Corn Crake Photos

2017-11-07 Thread Ken Feustel
I have posted four Corn Crake photos to my flickr site. Sue and I were very
pleased that so many birders got to see this bird. The rarity of this species
is such that, according to Bull’s Birds of New York State (1998), the last
record was a bird that was shot in a rye field in Orient in 1963. This was the
first NYS record in seventy-five years. National Geographic’s “Complete Birds
of North America” stated that it has been only recorded five times in North
America, most recently in 2002. These are dated references, and we are aware of
a recent record from Maine, originally identified as a Yellow Rail - there are
likely others.

Good Birding!

2017-11-07 Thread Shaibal Mitra
For people unfamiliar with the Jones Beach strip, the following information
might be useful.

Parking (and even walking) on the Ocean Parkway is not permitted, although
enforcement of these rules varies a great deal.

I suggest parking at the Overlook Beach parking lot on the ocean side, then
walking a short distance east along the parkway and crossing at the turn-around
labeled "Cedar Beach Marina"

>From the west, take the Meadowbrook or the Wantagh south to the Ocean Parkway
>then head east.

>From the east, take the Robert Moses Causeway south to the Ocean Parkway then
>head west.
