[nysbirds-l] A # of 1sts

2021-04-28 Thread robert adamo
After keeping an appointment at the VA Hospital in E.Northport, and
impressed by all the bird calls/songs I heard getting back to my car in the
parking lot - I made a command decision to stop at Sunken Meadow SP on my
way east. Since I haven't been birding for a while, today's haul put a
smile on my face. FOY species were Green Heron, Tree & Barn Swallows,
Yellow Warbler and Baltimore Oriole.
While the heron appears to be early, the highlight of firsts (hands down)
was the sight of 3 crows "escorting" a drone over the water as it headed
east. They never got closer than ~ 4 ft at it's 9, 12 & 3 o'clock
positions, but did not utter one vocalization, which at first struck me as
strange. Leading me to wonder, if the crow's reputation of being smart is
deserved, if this was the first drone they had ever experienced, and didn't
know how it would respond to their closeness, they played it smart, using
their collective brains, instead of their brawn !

Cheers,
Bob

The question is will it stay around.  Probably not, but it'd be nice:-)

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Black-throated GRAY Warbler - Tobay (Nassau Co) 4/28

2021-04-28 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Follow up and additional info on the Black-throated Gray Warbler:

This bird was found by Jack Carlson around 11:20 this morning, in the JFK
Sanctuary at Tobay Beach. Jack saw the bird well, including the yellow spot
before the eye. He quickly went back for his camera but then could not
relocate the bird. I checked the area at my first opportunity later this
afternoon, and did not find it, but it could very well still be in the
area. It would be worth keeping a sharp eye out at West End Jones Beach
tomorrow as well.

During the week there is no one at the booth, but you do risk getting
ticketed if you don't display the JFK permit while parked in the sanctuary.

Good luck if you try, and please post any updates.

Hi all,

I am sharing a thirdhand but strongly suggestive report of a Black-throated
Gray Warbler at Tobay Beach this morning. I have no further info as to the
location. Please be advised that this is a Town of Oyster Bay beach area,
which is mostly private and pricey for residents, and the more accessible
JFK Memorial Sanctuary area technically requires a permit to access.

Best,

Three isn't anyone at the gate at Tobay before 7am, possibly before 8
(official opening time) on weekdays. Permit can be obtained by emailing
beac...@oysterbay-ny.gov , subject JKF permit with your name and address,
and the make, model, color and plate # of your car and they will mail the
permit to you.

Wednesday, April 28 -

Multiple Evening Grosbeaks are being found around Manhattan (N.Y. City) and of
them, thanks to many observers out in that location, Central Park is recording
the higher numbers so far, however the species may be present in many other
locations as well, & there’s a tremendous general arrival of many (more)
migrants, with (for example) warbler diversity again increased, just overnight.
