[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Green-winged Teal - Smithtown, Suffolk County

2018-12-27 Thread David La Magna
For anyone interested a Eurasian Green-winged Teal was discovered during
the Smithtown CBC today at Bill Richards Park in Suffolk County. It was on
the eastern spur of the only pond on site.

This park may not be Google map-able. It is a dirt parking lot just east
of the entrance to Blydenburgh County Park on the west bound lane of
454/347 Vets Hwy. Park and follow the trail to the lake.

[nysbirds-l] Brown Pelicans, Suffolk County - South Shore

2018-07-29 Thread David La Magna
For those who do not use eBird constantly there are a number of Brown Pelicans
still be observed along the ocean beaches of Suffolk County (and one a few days
ago in Nassau County at the Jones Beach inlet)

An individual was seen the past few days including today from field 5 of Robert
Moses State Park. I may have had the same individual today viewed from the
ocean side from Sailors Haven looking west.

5 more birds were reported from Moriches Inlet today.

Don’t let the July listserv doldrums fool you there are plenty of good birds
out there, Brown Pelicans included!

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe, Lake Ronkonkoma Suffolk

2018-02-19 Thread David La Magna
To my surprise there is a Red-necked Grebe on the east side of Lake Ronkonkoma.
Other notables for this location being a red-throated loon and red-breasted
merganser (a mention this because in the past it was commented that others have
never seen it here).

A good day for red in the name?

Also the ridiculous number of common Merg as usual.

[nysbirds-l] Lone Redhead - Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk

2018-01-21 Thread David La Magna
Today, in the small area of open water the lone duck turned out to be a
female Redhead. Viewed from the Islip Pavilion on the west/southwest side
of the lake. This is a first for me for this species at this location.

Additionally, the Eurasian Wigeon is still at the Mill Pond in Sayville.

Also of note a juv. Snow Goose and Cackling Goose were seen on the golf
course of the VA in Northport on Friday. The snow goose continues from the
"Northport Count" a few weeks ago. Birding their can be tricky. The snow
goose was seen like a beacon when driving on Middleville Road. There is a
parking area right when you turn in to get a quick scope view, turned out a
Cackling was mixed in as well.

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese - Lake Ronkonkoma and surrounds, Suffolk County, LI

2017-12-28 Thread David La Magna
Hi all,
Mike Rath and I discovered a number of Cackling Geese yesterday during the
Smithtown CBC. With birds moving around during the day we figured there to
be at least 4 individuals, three of which were well photographed.

The most interesting one displayed a nice white neck collar and with a
really small bill which could possibly be a minima subspecies. This
individual was first detected on Lake Ronkonkoma in the morning and again
later in the day feeding at Sachem High School North fields (assuming it is
the same individual).

Two other individuals were well documented at Great Hollow Middle School in
Nesconset. One being a very "frosty" individual.

https://flic.kr/p/EPRM2N
https://flic.kr/p/21SQRyy

I apologize for the late posting, hopefully the birds are still around. I
would be interested in subspecies discussion.

To echo that message from Brendan, in a failed afternoon attempt at Gilgo for
the Summer Tanager an awesomely crisp adult RHWO was working up and down the
block east of the marina and was very cooperative.

[nysbirds-l] 1/12 Townsend's Solitaire YES and other notes

2017-01-12 Thread David La Magna
For those interested the Townsend's Solitaire is still showing in Southold
on North Sea Drive. While there I had a fly over Bald Eagle (juv) which
was nice and ran into fellow birders Arie, Bob and Jacqueline P.

Prior to seeing the Solitaire I had completely struck out on the South Fork
missing Common Moorhen at Cooper's Neck, G. White-fronted at Agawam and
Sandhill at Wainscott. #worstbirder

Rufouses are still being seen.

After the Solitaire under Arie's suggestion a Virginia Rail was easily
viewed at Arshamomaque.

So the earlier "four white geese" went out quickly because I wanted to get
word out ASAP in case there were other birders in the area. Arie and Bob
were able to meet me at Alvah Lane in Cutchogue to view what are FOUR
Ross's Geese just before they flew off, which luckily was just to the other
side of the road where they were more easily viewed and their size, bill
and headshape better observed (with sun to our backs, them being closer and
more even terrain).

There were no other species to count but there was a fascinating Canada
hybrid with the body of a canada, orange legs and a white head. Attempts
to digiscope resulted in a dead battery. Birds were still coming in as we
left. As this was the only location for the entire day with any bit of
species diversity, it deserves more investigation.

[nysbirds-l] Tundra Swans - Lake Ronkonkoma

2016-12-27 Thread David La Magna
Hate driving to Hook Pond? Good news! There are TWO Tundra Swans on Lake
Ronkonkoma. Discovered today during the Smithtown CBC by Mike Rath, George
R and myself.

Awful picture here: https://flic.kr/p/Ppnzfp

The Lake continues to be a slam dunk for Common Merganser.

Interesting to see drought like conditions of Long Island judging by the
amount of exposed shoreline at Lake Ronkonkoma and how some other explored
seeps and ponds were completely dry.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Ravens

2015-04-14 Thread David La Magna
This past weekend I had a Common Raven flew over my house in Ronkonkoma
(this is not the first time I've had that) and today Mike Rath and I had
another at Fuchs Pond in Northport.

It appears this bird is becoming very well established on Long Island
(especially with some known nest sites in recent years). Ebird reports
show a number of sightings in the past 5 years (2015-2010) but basically
zero in the 5 years prior to that (2010-2005). I am sure the popularity of
eBird in recent years has contributed to that.

On a different note: Massachusetts had 4 swallow-tailed kites yesterday at
Pilgrim Heights Hawk Watch. So keep looking up New York.

[nysbirds-l] Eurasian Teal & Wigeon, Centerport Suffolk County

2015-01-07 Thread David La Magna
On Monday I discovered a Eurasian Teal (Eurasian subspecies of Green-winged
Teal) at the Centerport Pond viewed from the parking lot of the Chalet Motel.
Mike Rath and I viewed it there again today. It is easy to pick out with its
white horizontal stripe across the side while dabbling with a few other teal.
A link to a poor digiscoped picture is below (if anyone has a good way to
connect the iPhone 6 to scope please please please message me privately).

Additionally there is a continuing male Eurasian Wigeon (they seem to be
everywhere) across the street in the harbor.

[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Gone... Orange-crowned Warbler Suffolk County LI

2014-11-29 Thread David La Magna
The Barnacle Goose was observed leaving with Canadas southward around 1pm
and has not seemed to have returned to Millers Pond. A decently extensive
search of surrounding fields was done by myself and Derek Rogers but failed
to turn up the goose. A large number (possible 30+, I recorded 24
different banding codes) of the Canada Geese have yellow neck collars from
a banding program in Greenland... so any flocks with those geese might have
the Barnacle lurking with them.

Searching led me to Lake Ronkonkoma County Park Lily Pond (this is the park
just north of Lake Ronkonkoma on Portion Road, there is a small turn off
for parking) and there I turned up a "cooperative to the binoculars but not
to the camera" Orange-crowned Warbler in the northwest section of the small
loop trail. I believe one was reported there by the Four Harbors Audubon
Society about a month ago.

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull @ Heckscher SP Suffolk

2014-04-17 Thread David La Magna
A quick outing with my wife turned up a Lesser Black-backed Gull (I am
completely guessing but I think 3rd winter plumage) in the puddles at Field
7 at Heckscher.

Other spots like Lakeland County Park have yet to turn up anything too
noteworthy besides typical migrants such as extremely cooperative Pine
Warblers and Northern-rough wing swallows.

Pics of the Gull are here, feel free to try to turn it into something more
exotic:

[nysbirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull @ Heckscher SP Suffolk

2014-04-17 Thread David La Magna
A quick outing with my wife turned up a Lesser Black-backed Gull (I am
completely guessing but I think 3rd winter plumage) in the puddles at Field
7 at Heckscher.

Other spots like Lakeland County Park have yet to turn up anything too
noteworthy besides typical migrants such as extremely cooperative Pine
Warblers and Northern-rough wing swallows.

Pics of the Gull are here, feel free to try to turn it into something more
exotic:

[nysbirds-l] Additional Dune Rd sightings (and the Pink-footed Goose is in RIVERHEAD, Suffolk County sorry for the confusion!)

2014-01-26 Thread David La Magna
Not to clutter up people's inboxes, but the Pink-footed Goose is in
Riverhead on the sod fields not far from where it has been seen in the
previous weeks. Again beside viewed from Sound Ave (coordinates: 40.966597,
-72.652892).

Anyway the day started with brutal winds and cold at Shinnecock inlet which
produced an immature male King Eider early which could not be refound when
we went to check again after warming up. Surf conditions made it
difficult. No iceland or glaucous gulls were seen but that is not to say
there are not still there. And only a quick look failed to turn up the
red-necked grebe.

There was however and extremely cooperative Clapper Rail at the Quogue
Nature Trail on Dune Road right in the first ditch down the trail which
also contained Seaside Sparrow. Also viewed from there, besides a Northern
Harrier, in the distance was an immature Bald Eagle moving east over the
bay.

[nysbirds-l] Banded Ipswich Jones Beach

2013-03-16 Thread David La Magna
I am not sure how significant this is but while waiting for the Lapland
Longspur to show up at the Coast Guard Station I took a picture of a
Savannah "Ipswich" Sparrow. It was not until later that I realized it has
a metal band in its leg. If any researcher could use this information
please e-mail me off list.

The Lapland Longspur did show up with Horned Larks, and there were at least
two of the immature White-crowned Sparrows mentioned yesterday by the
entrance.

[nysbirds-l] Robert Moses

2012-05-04 Thread David La Magna
After seeing Baltimore Orioles, Blue-headed Vireo and Blue-winged Warbler
at my house in Ronkonkoma I took a late afternoon drive to RMSP which was
teeming with birds. Of note I also had a *Wilson's Warbler* going east
near the first turnaround on the south side of the road accompanied with a
few Magnolia Warblers and some empidonax species (least?). I also had
a *Canada
Warbler* leaving the park across from the Coast Guard. In addition Scarlet
Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, Wood Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, Blue-headed Vireo and Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated
Blue, Palm Warblers were also seen.
