Thanks for this, Jim. My only quibble with what you’ve said is that the change
was in requiring a permit year-round. Previously, birders could use the lots
from mid-November through mid-March without needing a permit. No birds are
nesting then, and one assumes that the nude beach is fairly empty. 略 I’ve
rarely seen surfers or anglers out there in winter, and the lot has never been
full. I understand the need to restrict the crowds during beach season, but the
decision to exclude birders in February seems arbitrary, especially on
non-holiday weekdays.

used to park at the fishermen’s lot which was legal in winter, but I seem to
remember some change in that policy.

[nysbirds-l] Question re parking at Breezy Point, Queens

2022-02-03 Thread Dawn Hannay
Can anyone tell me what the situation is now for parking at Breezy Point? We
used to park at the fishermen’s lot which was legal in winter, but I seem to
remember some change in that policy.
Thank you,
Dawn Hannay

[nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting reappeared

2021-03-21 Thread Dawn Hannay
The Painted Bunting that was seen in February in a private yard in Pearl River,
Rockland County reappeared this week. It’s only coming in very sporadically
every few days, but the homeowner got a photo this morning. I’ll be reporting
it on her behalf, since she’s not a birder.
Unfortunately I can’t go today or tomorrow and the bird is not visible except
from inside her house.
Interesting that it’s still around, and I’m wondering where it’s going when
it’s absent from her feeders. It was gone for about three weeks before it
reappeared.

[nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting

2021-02-20 Thread Dawn Hannay
There’s a male Painted Bunting coming to backyard feeders in Pearl River,
Rockland County. The homeowner is not a birder. She sent me a description on
Thursday, and a photo on Friday. I was able to see photograph the bird this
morning, Saturday. Unfortunately the feeders are not visible from the street,
and after careful consideration and a lot of discussion, the owner has declined
to allow birders in her backyard.
I’ll be putting a photo on eBird later. I’ve already done so on the Facebook
New York Birders page.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Croton Point Park

2021-02-14 Thread Dawn Hannay
I was there today and the number of redpolls was down slightly (12-13), and I
definitely did not see a Hoary.
In other news, I was told that the brazen meadowlark was taken by a Red-tailed
Hawk this morning. I know there were more than one, but didn’t see any others.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Possible Ferruginous Hawk Orange co.

According to GPS maps, the road everyone was on is Cedar Swamp Road. Nobody was
running into farm fields, blocking farm vehicles or the like. Everyone was
respectful and polite. The landowner in question indicated that the entire road
is private and asked everyone to leave, which we did. I think the question is
whether Cedar Swamp Road itself is a public or private road. There is no
signage indicating it is private, so if it is, birders need to know.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point YB Cuckoo and Blackpoll

2020-11-20 Thread Dawn Hannay
Highlights near the croton point landfill today included a Yellow-billed
Cuckoo, flushed from the path below the landfill on the southeast side. It
flew into the vines nearby and was vocalizing. I got some good photos. Also
seen was a late Blackpoll Warbler foraging low in mugwort and grasses on the
south slope of the landfill. Horned Larks, American Tree Sparrows and a large
(33 low estimate) flock of pipits. We did not see any Snow Buntings or Longspur.
Happy Birding,
Dawn Hannay

Deb. Oh sorry, typo in the field. Many birds already on territory. Blue-wings,
Prairies, Brewster’s, Hooded, Worm-eating, LA Waterthrush, Chestnut-sided,
Hooded, and more. My list from today is on eBird. No Golden-wings yet, at least
that I saw. Still a very enjoyable day.

2018-10-30 Thread Dawn Hannay
Another exciting morning in Ft. Tryon Park this morning, with yet another
Eastern Bluebird and 5 species of warblers; Blackpoll, Nashville,
Black-throated Blue, Palm and Yellow-rumped. Large numbers of the commoner
species, and a constant overhead stream of Grackles, Cowbirds, Blackbirds,
Waxwings and finches. A flock of about a dozen Monk Parakeets also came
streaming through. Lots of birds moving.

Waxwings and finches. A flock of about a dozen Monk Parakeets also came
streaming through. Lots of birds moving.

Thanks, Shaibal. I'm happy to try to get it documented, not a chore at all. I'm
hoping someone out there yesterday got a photo, or that it can be refound.
Unfortunately I and those I was with didn't realize its rarity at the time.
Always happy to learn.

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown 5/9 more

2016-05-09 Thread Dawn Hannay
Though not as full of transient migrants as Central Park perhaps, there were
plenty of birds along Doodletown Road this morning.
I tallied 15 species of warbler including the previously reported Kentucky,
Hooded, Cerulean, Worm-eating, Nashville, Blue-winged, Black-throated Blue,
Prairie, Yellow, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, Black and White, Redstart,
Yellow-rumped, La. Waterthrush. Also many Yellow-throated, Warbling,
Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireos. Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
Indigo Bunting, nesting Gnatcatchers, Great-crested Flycatcher and Phoebe,
Veery and Wood Thrush, and both Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers.
To clarify in response to a question, both Kentucky Warblers were singing. I
heard two individuals, one near the bridge and one several hundred yards up the
hill beyond. The bird near the bridge was showing nicely.

Past the reservoir take the fork towards "Historic Sites" rather than the one

[nysbirds-l] Sterling Forest, Ironwood Drive powerline

2015-05-12 Thread Dawn Hannay
Together with Adele Gotlib, I spent the day walking the power line cut and
the Sterling Valley trail at Sterling Forest today. We were disturbed to
see that crews with chainsaws were hard at work along the north
right-of-way, usually the more productive direction for Golden-winged
Warblers. I understand that the right-of-way needs to be maintained, but
the timing seems less than ideal for the warblers.
Since the noise was disruptive, we walked south, and saw only one
Blue-winged and 2 Golden-winged Warblers. We did see Prairie, Indigo
Bunting, Field and Chipping Sparrows, Great-crested Flycatcher and
Yellow-throated Vireos, and a pair of Broad-winged Hawks along the power
line.
We then turned southwest to follow the Sterling Valley trail to the lake.
The birding was tough and bugs abundant, but we saw Worm-eating, Cerulean,
Black-and-white, Ovenbird, Black-throated Green and Yellow Warblers, and an
abundance of Scarlet Tanagers. Wood Ducks were on the pond, and there was a
pair of Kingbirds at the lake.
I won't list all the birds here, but we concluded with an Eagle flying
over. Bald is the expected species. but the bird was completely silhouetted
and any markings were obscured. It definitely had no white at all on the
head and tail, but it was impossible to see the mottling, if any, on the
body.
Still, an exciting conclusion to a good day!

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown 5/10/15

2015-05-10 Thread Dawn Hannay
I spent a lovely day with Deborah Alperin and Janet Wooten in Doodletown.
Though there were not a lot of non-breeding migrants, we did see (or at
least hear) most of the birds we sought. Plenty of Hooded and Cerulean
Warblers, a singing Kentucky, which we heard but did not see both along
the road past the reservoir and on Lemon Road,
Yellow-throated Vireo, lots of Yellow-billed Cuckoos and Indigo Buntings,
Baltimore Orioles and Scarlet Tanagers. Beautiful breeding plumaged
Tennessees, several Worm-eating Warblers being cooperative and Parula,
Blue-winged, Black-and whites, Yellow, and Redstarts. A single Veery and
several Wood Thrushes were the only thrushes.
There were very few flycatchers- only a E. Phoebe at the dam and an Eastern
Kingbird at Iona Island. Very few sparrows- singles only of Song,
White-throat and Chipping.
No Towhee or Ovenbird, both of which are normally common by now. Oddly, no
Chipmunks!
In the non-bird department, we saw a Falcate Orangetip near the bottom of
the road, and some herps, including a rattlesnake. Another party saw a
Black Bear cub, and presumably Mom was nearby, since it was Mother's Day!
Happy birding,
Dawn Hannay

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Kingbird 3:15-4:30 PM NO

2014-12-28 Thread Dawn Hannay
I high-tailed it down to Jane and Washington after landing at LGA this
afternoon but despite about 20 people searching, from about 3:15 until
dark the Couch's Kingbird was not located. Does anyone know where it goes
to roost? Any sense of the best late afternoon spot?
Thanks, Dawn Hannay

Re: [nysbirds-l] Rattlesnake at Doodletown

2014-05-27 Thread Dawn Hannay
Hi all, I didn't see any rattlesnakes this Sunday when I was up on
Doodletown Road, but here's one I photographed in 2006 right on the side of
Doodletown Road.

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown Road, May 13

2014-05-13 Thread Dawn Hannay
Two friends and I had a great day at Doodletown today. We saw 60+ species.
Many birds are on territory, including Hooded and Cerulean Warblers, Louisiana
Waterthushes and Indigo Buntings. We observed both Cerulean Warblers and
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers on nests.
There were lots of migrants as well, including at least a dozen Tennessee
Warblers, Canadas, Chestnut-sided and more. Another highlight was watching 4
male Indigo Buntings chasing each other endlessly.
I definitely recommend a visit!

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, May 12

2014-05-12 Thread Dawn Hannay
My overall impression of birding today is that whilst numbers are down from
the weekend, there are plenty of great birds to see. I started at the Pool
where I saw a Solitary Sandpiper on the grass, and where there were
surprising numbers of Northern Waterthrush. I saw at least 6 in the first
10 minutes. Unfortunately I was called out of the park, but returned to the
Ramble at about 11 AM. I will not list all that I saw but the highlights
were just that: a very cooperative Bay-breasted Warbler near the boat
concession by the Boathouse, followed closely by a Prothonotary Warbler at
the Point, and a very skulky Yellow-breasted Chat seen 3 times by me, and
finally by others at the Maintenance Meadow. I capped off the afternoon by
seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow just southeast of the playground at the 85th
and CPW entrance to the park. There had reportedly been 2 there earlier,
with another reported from Strawberry Fields.

[nysbirds-l] Ft. Tryon Park 5/04/14

2014-05-04 Thread Dawn Hannay
I had a great couple of mid-morning hours birding Ft. Tryon Park this morning.
The winds were gusty on the park's western slope, and most birds were seen on
the eastern wooded slope below the Cloisters.
Birds are not as numerous as Central Park, but the path is at canopy height and
I had great eye-level close views of many species. The 13 species if warbler
included Nashville( 2 males), Parula (many), Black-throated Green,
Black-throated Blue, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia, Palm, Worm-eating, Redstart,
Black-and-white, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-rumped and Ovenbird. There were
both Blue-headed and Warbling vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, at least 3 Scarlet
Tanagers, an Indigo Bunting, both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles and a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The only thrush I saw was Hermit. Also seen were House
Wren, many Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a Barn Swallow and a Wood Pewee.
I looked for the previously reported Yellow-throated Warbler, but didn't find
it.
Happy Birding!
