Re: [nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt, Smith Pt Marina, Shirley , Suffolk Co. Now

2015-06-06 Thread Michael Scheibel
While I was on the bird (~8:30-9:30 am), the tide was low and the bird
disappeared from few many times; so some patience may be in order, However
the tide should now be just past high (Smith pt Bridge 1:24pm) so I suppose
the birds location and activity may have changed accordingly.

Encountered probable Thick-billed Murre in the inlet at Lake Montauk around

from the west jetty. Was re-located about 4:05 pm just south of the usual
gull loafing area & sandy beach on east side of the inlet just south of the
end of the stone jetty. Bird was subsequently observed swimming further
south near Gosman's. Record photos obtained & attached here & in my

[nysbirds-l] Seawatch - FINS Tower, Smith Point

2014-05-16 Thread Michael Scheibel
As per Derek Rogers' earlier post I conducted a seawatch for about 1 1/2
hrs. starting at 6:45 am, Northern Gannets streamed by in groups of from
3-25 adding up to over 200, Black Scoters mostly in large flocks added up
to over 600, the Common Tern flight noted by Derek amounted to only two
small flocks of about 20 birds. The highlight came right at the end of my
watch around 0815 when a Parasitic Jaeger approached from the NW (when
first seen it was over the barrier beach giving the impression that it had
flown in over the bay), the bird flew low over the dunes and then easterly
along the ocean front angling out to the SE. The bird was very dark with
no obvious flashes of white in the primaries leading me to believe it was a
dark morph adult in breeding plumage.

[nysbirds-l] Common Merganser - Brookhaven, Suffolk Co.

My wife Lynne & I walked down to Squassux Landing in Brookhaven hamlet late

south of the landing in Carmen's River in a cove along the west side. The
Landing is private, but you can park at the end of Beaver Dam Road and walk
south around the locked gate along the river to the end of a loop road,
mergansers were easily visible to the south of that position.
Also present, Mallard, Black Duck , Gadwall, American Coot & Pied-billed

Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose in Wyandanch (Suffolk)

2013-01-04 Thread Michael Scheibel
By the time I arrived (2:30) they must have had enough, the first person I
spoke with drove up to where I had parked and inquired if I was looking for
the goose, then informed me that it was private property, all before I had
a chance to get out of the car. He mentioned people walking over the
greens, which seemed to be the primary complaint.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose in Wyandanch (Suffolk)

2013-01-04 Thread Michael Scheibel
By the time I arrived (2:30) they must have had enough, the first person I
spoke with drove up to where I had parked and inquired if I was looking for
the goose, then informed me that it was private property, all before I had
a chance to get out of the car. He mentioned people walking over the
greens, which seemed to be the primary complaint.
On Jan 4, 2013 8:43 PM, Andrew Baksh birdingd...@gmail.com wrote:

Thank you Derek for the update. It seems odd that security folks would be
friendly with you but then give Michael a hard time with a message to tell
other birders they are not welcome. You are either quite the charmer, we
could either have different personnel with different personalities or it
COULD BE that some party (possibly birders) offended the authorities by
encroaching on private property; thus, ruining it for others??

Such a shame after all the hard work in trying to track the schedule of
the BRNG. Perhaps it will, as you speculated, relocate to more accessible
 area for all to see.

 Good and RESPONSIBLE Birding!

 Mike,

Thanks for this post. I find this very interesting as Arie and I were
greeted with a wave and a smile by 2 officers. We walked out, got the geese
and left. We respectfully stayed on the patio area as initially advised.

 My thoughts:

The pond at the course is almost 3/4 frozen and soon these geese will be
looking for more open water for their night time roost. Their was a big old
Red Fox causing a commotion and the geese seemed quite unsettled. More
initiative for them to move on.

Birders should look to Belmont Lake as temperatures stay cold. This is
where I had the Barnacle a few weeks back.

[nysbirds-l] Shearwater in Plum Gut

2012-07-19 Thread Michael Scheibel
A possible Cory's Shearwater was observed yesterday evening feeding with
100's of Common terns in Plum Gut (between Orient Point & Plum Island),
Suffolk Co..
Aboard a charter fishing boat w/o binoculars the bird was readily
identifiable as a shearwater, & appeared to have markings of a Cory's. The
captain of the boat said the bird has been in the area for a few weeks,
so I wondered if other birders may have seen this bird, or have an idea
which shearwater species would be most likely near land at this time of
year.
This area is along the route regularly followed by the Cross Sound ferries.
