[nysbirds-l] Results of the 2023 Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count

2023-12-21 Thread Michael Yuan
On Saturday, December 16th, 2023, by foot, car, and kayak,* 143
participants* conducted the annual *Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count (CBC)*.
The count circle includes almost all of the borough of Brooklyn (Kings
County), western Jamaica Bay, and the western end of the Rockaway peninsula.

Counters enjoyed a sunny and mild day (someone mentioned getting a sunburn
for the first time on a CBC), with gentle north winds and temperatures
between 45F and 53F, and found *136 species, *one short of the count high
of 137 set in 2020. The total continues a five-year trend of above-average
species totals, driven by strong participation from the Brooklyn birding
community, increasing collective spirit and desire to thoroughly catalog
the species in our area, and fortunate weather conditions.

The *49,438 individual birds* tallied on count day was 17% above our
ten-year average. Good daytime visibility often contributes to higher
counts of seabirds, geese, and ducks on the bay and ocean that provide the
bulk of our count numbers, countering the downward effect of warmer
temperatures on concentrations of roosting gulls that could lead to higher
numbers of individuals.

*Rare Birds*

The Brooklyn CBC deems “rare” birds as those seen three or fewer times in
the last ten years. A female *WILD TURKEY* that inexplicably turned up in
Brooklyn this summer and made Burnett Street in Marine Park her home was a
new species for the count, which now totals 235 species. Also in Marine
Park, CBCers saw the second count record *CACKLING GEESE (4)*, first added
to the count list in 2013. Plentiful just a few miles to the east, *REDHEAD
(5) *were seen for just the second time in the last ten years. *VIRGINIA
RAIL (2), *detected at Jamaica Bay West Pond and on Breezy Point, were the
13th count record but last seen on the count in 2007. They also
counted 9 *RAZORBILLs,
*seen on back-to-back counts for the first time in over a decade. It seems
that this year it might be odd for a downstate/coastal CBC to *not *report
an *ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER*. Two count areas found 3 in the circle.
*LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER (5)* and one *LESSER YELLOWLEGS* provided interesting shorebird
diversity. Only seen sporadically in recent years, Breezy Point counters
observed a hunting *SHORT-EARED OWL *in the pre-dawn hours*.* Spring Creek
counters located one *HOUSE WREN.* For the second time in three years, a
vagrant *LARK SPARROW *could be wintering in Brooklyn. Lingering New World
warblers were few this year, but a second-ever *BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER* seen in Green-Wood Cemetery is a terrific December bird.

*High Counts*

We established all-time high counts for 16 species. Contrary to
conventional thinking that warmer temperatures result in fewer waterfowl,
we set all-time highs among *SNOW GOOSE* (1,801/previous high 1,535)
*BUFFLEHEAD *(1,863/previous high 1,794), *RING-NECKED DUCK* (28/previous
high 9, and only seen on about half of the counts), and *RED-THROATED
LOON* (299/previous
high 260). *PEREGRINE FALCON* (18/previous high 12) and *COMMON RAVEN*
(11/previous
high 9) continue to propagate in the urban setting. Green-Wood Cemetery
birders spotted irregularly seen *TURKEY VULTUREs* (4/previous high 3) on a
clear day. A maxima of *FISH CROW* (683/previous high of 522 set last year)
continues our understanding of the whereabouts of large uniform
flocks. 35* AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERs* were the most seen since 1985 and typically number in the
single digits on the count, when seen. Inland counters tallied high counts
of *WINTER WREN* (15/previous high 13) and *NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD* (188/previous
high 162). The Brooklyn/Queens coast suits *ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER*
(16/previous
high 9) well, and the majority *COMMON YELLOWTHROATs* (5/previous high 4)
were found in the parks of Brooklyn’s north shore. North of Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge is still *the* location in the state to find the largest
concentration of wintering *BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE* (932/previous high 719).

We suffered just one low count of note, just 50 *SANDERLINGs* tied an
all-time low, well below our average of 494 seen on the Plumb and Rockaway
beaches.

*Misses*

Unfortunately, we did not find a *TUFTED TITMOUSE* and *BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRD* on the day of the count, which accounted for just 2 misses from
the 100 regularly seen species on the count, seen 8 or more times out of
the last 10 years. Naturally, both species were seen in the days following
the count. Other count week species include *WILSON’S SNIPE, ICELAND GULL,
LINCOLN’S SPARROW, *and *SALTMARSH SPARROW.*

The full report will be published in the Brooklyn Bird Club’s *Clapper
Rail* newsletter
and submitted to the National Audubon Society.

I’d like to extend sincere gratitude to the Brooklyn Bird Club and the
Prospect Park Alliance for sponsoring the count and hosting
the count dinner and compilation at the Prospect Park Picnic House, which
is always a highlight of the birding year. Thank you to the National Park
Service for

[nysbirds-l] Open House at JBWR on Saturday, Feb 25 - NPS seeks input on refuge management

2023-02-22 Thread Michael Yuan
The National Park Service (NPS) seeks public input on habitat and
management issues at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (JBWR), and will hold an
open house this Saturday, February 25th from 11-2pm at the JBWR visitor
center. It would be tremendously helpful for birders to show up and ensure
their perspective is conveyed to NPS. It goes without saying that JBWR is a
New York state, if not global, birding gem, but it won't stay that way
without proper management.

See the email below for more information. If you are unable to make it on
Saturday, please send your comments to gateway_feedb...@nps.gov.

Thank you,

[nysbirds-l] 2022 Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count results

2022-12-22 Thread Michael Yuan
On Saturday, December 17th, 2022, by foot, car, and kayak,* 130
participants* conducted the annual *Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count (CBC)*.
The count circle includes most of the borough of Brooklyn (Kings County),
western Jamaica Bay, and western end of the Rockaway peninsula. While
mostly sunny, dry, and mild, persistent winds throughout the day dulled
expectations of a bountiful count.

Despite those end-of-day misgivings, counters tallied *133 species *and*
51,567 individuals,* exceeding the count’s 10-year averages of 125 species
and 43,433 individuals.

While many factors are at play, the above-average species diversity and
sums of the last few years can be attributed to two efforts – 1) extensive
coverage in the count circle, buoyed by the increased interest in birding
since the start of the pandemic and fostered by the local birding community
in Brooklyn, and 2) habitat creation and bird-friendly stewardship in
newish parks such as Shirley Chisholm State Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and
Bush Terminal Piers. Count compilers aim to embrace the urban birding
experience and strive to place participants in all green and birdy spaces
in the count circle.

Counters found two new species for the count, which now totals 236. The
long-staying vagrant *TOWNSEND’S WARBLER *continued in Fort Greene
Park. A *NORTHERN
PARULA* at the 26th Ward Wastewater Treatment Plant represented a number of
lingering eastern warblers in Brooklyn, which include a *BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER* (3rd record for count), *WILSON’S WARBLER* (7th for count, seen 3
out of the last 4 years), as well as count week-only *OVENBIRD*, *NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH*, and *BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER*, which met its demise by
way of a local Green-Wood Cemetery kestrel a few days before count day.

Other notable rare species for the count, seen 3 or fewer times in the last
10 years, were found on the Rockaway coast and in Jamaica Bay. A 2nd ever
count *DOVEKIE*, last seen in 1957, was spotted off Breezy Point in the
midst of a record-high 115 *RAZORBILLS *and 225 distant large alcids not
identified to species. Counters at Fort Tilden detected 4 *RED CROSSBILLS *
(9th count record), the only rare irruptive finch seen on the count. At
Jamaica Bay, counters discovered two good shorebirds, a *WESTERN SANDPIPER*
– 8th ever for count, last seen in 1995, and 5th ever *LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER*, last seen in 2003.

Among regular species, seen 8 or more times in the last 10 years, we
established all-time high counts with 6 species. Aided by the favorable
seabird movement conditions in the week leading up to the count, sea
watchers saw 262 *RED-THROATED LOONS *(previous high of 154) and 506 *COMMON
LOONS *(previous high of 193). Inland, 62 *RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS*
outnumbered the single digit counts of this species seen in the 1980s,
firmly continuing its northward expansion. 541* FISH CROWS, *350 *COMMON
GRACKLES *(3000+ seen the day after at Green-Wood Cemetery), and 9
*ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS *round out the other count-highs.

Species misses include* GREAT-HORNED OWL, *seen earlier during the count
week period but not on count day, *RING-NECKED PHEASANT*, decades ago
totaling in the triple digits, but now nearly extirpated from the circle
due to feral cats, *TREE SWALLOW, SNOWY OWL, *and *RING-NECKED DUCK,* all
typically seen 5 out of the last 10 years. A *BLACK-HEADED GULL* and very
late *SPOTTED SANDPIPER *made the count week period but unfortunately
eluded counters on December 17th.

I’d like to extend sincere gratitude to the Brooklyn Bird Club and the
Prospect Park Alliance for sponsoring the count and hosting the count
dinner and compilation at the Prospect Park Boathouse, which was our first
in-person gathering since 2019. Thank you to the National Park Service for
granting researcher permits for Gateway Recreation areas, NYS Parks for
providing guidance at Shirley Chisholm State Park, and the NYS Department
of Environmental Protection and Steve Nanz for coordinating access to two
wastewater treatment plants that always hold special birds. Personal thanks
to co-compiler Chris Laskowski and count team coordinator Bobbi Manian for
their hard work in planning this count, and to all area leaders and
participants for making it a highlight of the year.

Next year’s count is planned for Saturday, December 16, 2023. Hope to see
you there!

[nysbirds-l] Results of the 2021 Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count

2021-12-22 Thread Michael Yuan
The *Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count (CBC)*, one of the most urban of counts
in the state, was conducted on Saturday, December 18th, 2021, and compiled
on Zoom. The count circle includes most of the borough of Brooklyn, western
Jamaica Bay, and the western end of the Rockaway peninsula. On a gray and
occasionally spitting day that turned out much nicer than feared, over 100
participants in 12 areas within the count circle recorded *49,961
individuals,* representing *129 species. * These totals exceed our average
totals of 43,897 individuals and 123 species.

*High Counts*

We established all-time high counts of SANDERLING (1,121) more than
doubling our average sum. Our intrepid team of kayakers who explored the
inner regions of Jamaica Bay islands contributed the bulk of the DUNLIN
(907) count. GREAT BLUE HERON (38) flourished in Prospect Park and along
the Brooklyn coast. Perhaps helped by successful, undisturbed breeding in
the borough, GREAT HORNED OWLs (4) were detected in several locations.
1,100 TREE SWALLOWs, composed mainly of one 1000-strong flock that has
roamed the western Rockaways for well over a month, obliterated the
previous high count of 180. Mild temperatures in late autumn assisted in
the high counts of GRAY CATBIRD (48), BROWN CREEPER (18), and AMERICAN
ROBIN (564).

*Low counts*

Continuing a downward trend, counters tallied an all-time low of GREATER
SCAUP (483), which have wholly disappeared from Dead Horse Bay, where they
once amassed in the thousands in winter. We are curious if this flock has
shifted elsewhere, and if nearby count circles have seen an uptick in this
species. SHARP-SHINNED HAWKs (2) were poorly represented, which corresponds
to a notably weak flight of them along the coast this fall. A count of 3
COMMON RAVENs seemed low, as they’ve profoundly settled into urban areas,
but their presence on this year’s count promoted their frequency status to
Regular (seen 8 or more times in the last 10 years). It’s terrific to see
increased observations in the field reflected in the count’s moving average
method of monitoring species’ presence and frequency.

*Rare sightings*

The Brooklyn CBC deems rare species as those seen 0 to 3 times in the last
10 years. Topping the rarities, Emily Peyton and former Brooklyn CBC
compiler and database mastermind, Rick Cech, spotted a LARK SPARROW at
Hendrix Creek, rare for winter in New York and a count first. An
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, seen at Owls Head Park the day before the count,
benevolently stayed the night and became the 2nd occurrence of this species
on the count.

CBCers in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and on the west side of Cross Bay
Boulevard and noted a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, the 4th record and first
seen on the count since 2004, a GREAT EGRET, a single SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
a drake EURASIAN WIGEON, and 3 flyover DOWITCHERs over the West Pond,
likely LONG-BILLED due to the date, but ultimately left as a “sp.,” as
Short-billed Dowitchers linger in the Northeast.

Rounding out the other rarities, Floyd Bennett Field counters and Jamaica
Bay kayakers tallied a ten-year high count of 74 RED KNOTs. The north shore
of Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Bridge Park, contributed sightings of BALD
EAGLE and LAUGHING GULL to the rare list. Perhaps classified as rare for
the last time, an ICELAND GULL was spotted over Prospect Lake and LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLs (6) were seen on Breezy Point beaches, and will be
promoted to Irregular (seen 4-7 times in the last ten years) for next
year’s count. Increased distribution of gulls in the area, and increased
interest in gulls among birders will hopefully make them regulars on the
count.

*Worst Misses/Count Week birds*

It was tough to miss COMMON GRACKLE, a species seen on 85% of our counts,
and tougher to see eBird reports of large flocks of them in Brooklyn on
adjacent days. We suffered a harsh about-face in missing BONAPARTE’s GULL,
scarcer in the last ten years but seen on 90% of our counts, including an
all-time high of 2,789 in 2020.

This compiler has a sweet and sour feeling towards “count week” birds,
those species not seen on Count Day but seen on the three days before and
after Count Day. While it’s nice to see a variety of species in the area,
the sightings are a stinging reminder of what could have been. This year, a
number of species were not seen on count day, but before and after, such as
a potential count first NORTHERN PARULA, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD. Thanks to a
recent AOS split, a SHORT-BILLED GULL, first seen on Tuesday, would have
been a count first.

Other count week birds include TURKEY VULTURE, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, HOUSE
WREN, NELSON’S SPARROW, and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

A complete report will be published later in the Brooklyn Bird Club’s Clapper
Rail newsletter. Special thanks
to co-compiler Chris Laskowski for keeping everyone honest, and teams

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count recap, Dec 19 2020

2020-12-20 Thread Michael Yuan
The Brooklyn CBC, held safely on Saturday with National Audubon COVID-19
guidelines, was one of its most successful ever! The 138 species seen
yesterday set our highest species count, eclipsing our previous high of
134, set in the last significant finch irruption year of 2012. The
confluence of this year’s finch irruption and cold, post-blizzard
conditions to the north pushed the birds to coastal areas, and the local
snow cover concentrated open ground-preferring birds to tidal beach and
marsh edges.

The 45,946 individuals seen was higher than average, made possible by
excellent coverage among all sectors, and bolstered by an effort from
Brooklyn birders to improve the counting of roosting gulls within the
circle.

Of the nine species with which we set all-time high counts, a highlight was
2,789 BONAPARTE’S GULLs, the majority seen streaming onto the western
Rockaways, with many sticking around in Gravesend Bay and the Rockaway
Inlet. We set 10-year highs with an additional 28 regularly-occurring
species, mostly from wintering passerines such as WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
(943 individuals), and urban raptors like COOPER’S HAWK (21) and COMMON
RAVEN(9).

Of the several species where we experienced 10-year lows, only 2 NORTHERN
GANNETs were seen off Breezy Point.

We added two new species for the count, a MEW GULL at Brooklyn Army
Terminal Pier 4, and a late VEERY, coincidentally near the Pier 4 Marina in
Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Rare for the count highlights include irrupting finches, COMMON REDPOLL
(7), RED CROSSBILL (7), KING EIDER (5, including one in the Upper New York
Harbor, also at Brooklyn Army Terminal), SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, and lingering passerines MARSH WREN, LINCOLN’S SPARROW (2),
OVENBIRD, and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

TREE SWALLOW, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, and WILSON’S SNIPE were the worst misses,
species obviously affected by the snow-covered conditions.

Much gratitude to the participants, count leaders, and the Brooklyn Bird
Club for being the village that it takes to conduct this count, with
special thanks to team coordinator Bobbi Manian, and co-compiler Chris
Laskowski.

We hope to hold next year’s count under “normal” conditions and welcome all
to get involved to make the 2021 count even better.

Thanks,

Mike Yuan

[nysbirds-l] 2019 Brooklyn CBC preliminary results

2019-12-15 Thread Michael Yuan
On Saturday, December 14th, 2019, over 90 participants conducted the 111th
Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count (CBC).

The count day's weather allayed days of hand-wringing over a potential
soaker with a mild but misty day with highly reduced visibility. In short,
we found pleasant surprises among expected shortfalls. Despite a near
record-low of 26,834 individuals seen, the above-average species count of
129 is the highest since we set our all-time high of 134 in 2012.

In addition to the eleven long-standing count sectors, Louis Demarco and
Bonnie Aldinger resurrected one that had been dormant for seventeen years,
the Jamaica Bay Boat. The intrepid duo kayaked to islands in the bay,
scanning habitat not visible from the land-based sectors, and pulling out
two count “saves” (species seen in only one sector) in the process –
American Oystercatcher and Dunlin.

Rare birds (seen 3 or fewer times in the last 10 years) include Redhead,
Ring-Necked Duck, American Oystercatcher, Laughing Gull, Iceland Gull,
Lesser Black-backed Gull, Northern Goshawk (last seen in 2007), Eastern
Phoebe (all-time high of 4), House Wren, Lapland Longspur, Lincoln’s
Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Baltimore Oriole, and 4 warblers (Ovenbird,
Black-and-white Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler).

Greater Yellowlegs and Tufted Titmouse were the worst misses, both missed
for the first time ever on the count. Bonaparte’s Gull and Red-breasted
Nuthatch rounded out the coulda-beens.

High counts centered around the terrestrial, with all-time highs set with
11 American Woodcock, 240 Northern Cardinals, 93 Carolina Wren (more than
double the previous high), 20 Chipping Sparrow, and 4 Common Ravens, who
continue to establish themselves as likely breeding regulars in Kings
County.

Not surprising on a foggy day, we set all-time lows with waterfowl and
gulls, with 14 American Wigeon, 367 Mallard, 509 Greater Scaup, 28 Horned
Grebe, 8 Dunlin, 989 Herring Gull, and 14 Great Cormorant.

The ongoing count week species consist of Wilson’s Snipe, Bald Eagle, and
Black Skimmer, and White-crowned sparrow.

Many thanks to all the sector leaders and counters, and to Bobbi Manian for
coordinating the count teams. Much gratitude for the Brooklyn Bird Club
and Prospect Park Alliance for hosting the count dinner at the Prospect
Park Boathouse and Audubon Center.

Special thanks to Rick Cech, who compiled the Brooklyn CBC for 27 years,
and developed proprietary software to manage this count and display
real-time stats to keep our count dinner attendees entertained through the
night (right?).

[nysbirds-l] Mystery shorebird at JBWR East Pond 9-6-2015

2015-09-07 Thread Michael Yuan
Putting the word out for anyone going to Jamaica Bay today. Yesterday
around 3:45pm, the Brooklyn Bird Club and I observed a medium-sized
shorebird feeding on the North end of the East Pond, about 100 yards south
of Dead Man's Cove.

>From across the pond, and looking into less than ideal light, we observed
it feeding with Stilt Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Noticed its
long drooping bill, longer than White-rumped Sandpiper or Baird's
Sandpiper, which got us thinking Dunlin, but its long wings and tapered
rear end led us away from that notion and Western Sandpiper. Overall pale
gray, with dark legs.

Curlew Sandpiper fits some of these marks.

Video at full speed. Bird in question is on the right. There's a
slow-motion version of this video on the NY Birders Facebook page that
might offer better detail.

Jobs!) - https://www.flickr.com/photos/4477@N00/21032630680/

Sorry for the tardiness of the post, but due to the distance and viewing
conditions it was difficult to get a sense of the bird until I had a chance

Re:[nysbirds-l] Pink Footed Goose, Riverhead

2014-02-22 Thread Michael Yuan
Took off with a small group of Canadas. We observed it landing in the field
north of Reeves Drive and south of Sound Avenue, east of Roanoke. Geese are
starting to congregate here but we haven't relocated the PFGO yet.
