Re: [nysbirds-l] Interesting Flycatcher from Greenwood Cemetery Brooklyn NYC

2023-07-31 Thread Ryan
For those interested in credit chain of command, it was Eddie Monson, a california birder, who first flagged the photos as being a potential elaenia. His sister lives in NYC and he was browsing photos to see what was around.Sent from my iPhoneOn Jul 31, 2023, at 06:32, Andrew Baksh wrote:I am cross posting a report that was shared by Anthony F. on one of the What’sApp group of a flycatcher listed as a Least in the included eBird checklist. Discussions have since spawned as folks have mulled about a possible Elaenia sp.I reached out to Cin-Ty Lee who offered that while the crest in the photos is not typical of a Least, the lack of strong white edges in the primaries does not look good for Elaenia. At the same time, Cin-Ty did acknowledge not having much experience with the species. Have fun studying this one.I hope this bird is re-found as I think it is worthy of a follow-up with more photos and more observers getting a look.<1200.png>New York Breeding Bird Atlas Checklist - 30 Jul 2023 - Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn - 33 speciesebird.org“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves could free our mind.” ~ Bob Marley“Tenderness and Kindness are not signs of weakness and despair but manifestations of strength and resolution” ~ Khalil Gibran"I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick Douglass風 Swift as the wind林 Quiet as the forest火 Conquer like the fire山 Steady as the mountainSun Tzu  The Art of War(\__/)(= '.'=)                                            (") _ (")                                     Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! Andrew Bakshwww.birdingdude.blogspot.com

[nysbirds-l] 22 (yes, twenty-two) Anhingas - Rome NY

2023-04-22 Thread Ryan Zucker
Hello all,

Haven’t seen this posted here yet - Matthew Voelker found and photographed a
flock of at least 22 ANHINGAS this evening on the canal along Muck Rd in Rome,
NY (Oneida County). The 22 he reported are still present in the fading light
roosting in the trees across the canal, but further searching and careful
counting could easily turn the count higher.

The exact location is ~1500ft east of the fishing dock at the end of S Madison
St, approximately here (43.2025474, -75.4708929).

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Bohemian waxwings just over the border in MA

2023-03-13 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
Maybe of interest to this group: I've been to southern Vermont and western
Mass this winter, and both times found flocks of bohemian waxwings less
than 10 miles from the New York State border. There's also a report of a
bird in a Rensselaer county yard from this afternoon. Might be worth a
targeted fruit tree search in the taconics for folks hoping to see
bohemians in rensselaer or columbia counties.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Western Meadowlark - Kings county, NY

2023-02-27 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
Hi all -

In the interest of transparency, there's a possible western meadowlark
being regularly seen at Bush Terminal Piers Park in Kings County, NY. The
bird was first photographed yesterday by Josh Malbin (though a meadowlark
has been seen regularly at the park since December) and flagged by Doug
Gochfeld this AM. Close-ups of the tail seem to show horizontal barring,
rather than a dark vertical stripe with ribbing, and dark edging on all of
the tail feathers.

You can find Josh's photos here
https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S129688926

i have close-ups of the tail pattern here
https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/540172271

Looking forward to seeing more photos and further confirmation from others.
Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] townsend's warbler - green-wood cemetery, BK

2022-05-20 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
Thought I'd cross post since it doesn't look like it's made it here yet.
Cédric Duhalde found a singing male townsend's warbler on Cypress and Grape
in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. Other birders have seen it since. Look
for more details on eBird.

As a reminder, Green-Wood is an active cemetery, so exercise the usual
respect (no sitting on graves, no blocking roads, no recorded playback, etc)

Good luck if you go.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Prospect Park Martin update?

2021-04-05 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
I'll note that by the afternoon yesterday. The martin had started exploring
areas further upstream than the Peninsula, as far up as the wellhouse drive
bridge (AKA terrace bridge). If the usual spots aren't bearing fruit it may
be worthwhile to expand your search upstream.

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Red Crossbills

2019-04-01 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
Hi folks,

I paid a visit to see my favorite bird, the red crossbills, over the
weekend, and was able to get some photos and recordings—thanks so much to
everyone who has been reporting on them on the state list! I sent my eBird
list with recordings (as well as Tim Healy's much clearer recordings) to
Jeffrey Groth at AMNH at the suggestion of Paul Sweet. Jeffrey determined
that the birds sounded mostly like the type 7, or the "enigmatic
crossbill." From this eBird article:

*"Known range:* May be rare, or based on many recordings of “eastern” Type
10 over the last several years, our rather common “northeastern subspecies”
or call type. Type 7 was previously only thought to occur in interior
areas of the Pacific Northwest U.S. and s. British Columbia, but as stated
above, many recordings from the Great Lakes to the Northeast and southern
Maritimes, some even going back to 1962, match the spectrograms and sounds
of “Enigmatic” Type 7 very well. More study, specifically, recordings and
measurements of the same individuals, are needed to crack and solve this
mystery with certainty."

Exciting stuff and thanks again to all!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread Ryan
I caught sight of the TBMU at around 3:50 from 92 street pedestrian overpass
and followed it up to the Veterans Pier. It came in just a few feet from the
end of the pier, then floated inland to the area just south of the wastewater
treatment plant. It stuck around for a while then dove and we lost sight of it
after that.

Thanks for the alert!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread Ryan Mandelbaum
Back to the murre for a moment: is it still being seen? would like to know
before paying for a cab ride out to see it. it’s definitely nice that there’s a
thick-biled murre that’s accessible to those of us without a car :)

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Goose - Inwood Hill Park (NYC)

2016-10-23 Thread Ryan Zucker
Hello all,

This morning (October 23), Isaiah S and I found a Cackling Goose at Manhattan's
Inwood Hill Park. Originally seen on the ballfield just south of Spuyten Duyvil
Creek, and later on the Spuyten Duyvil mudflat (extreme NE corner of the park),
the bird was moving around a bit, and was last seen settling in at the Dyckman
St. ballfields at the extreme SW corner of the park. It was associating with a
flock of 25-50 Canadas. Photos can be seen here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32176677
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32169381

Comments on ID, public or private, are welcome, as I am aware that "small
geese" such as this can spark some debate.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Ebird report of Black-Throated Green Warbler, Westchester cty (or something better?)

2016-03-27 Thread Ryan MacLean
This morning I received an ebird RBA of a Black-Throated Green Warbler in
Croton-on-Hudson (Westchester cty) seen yesterday afternoon. The username was
'The Salmons' and the only description offered was "got a good look at the bird
with binoculars just outside window - first warbler seen this year."
Considering how early this still is I feel like this needs to be looked into
further to rule out the possibility of Townsends or Hermit Warbler (especially
considering that there was a Hermit in CT not long ago). Since I'm unable to
email the ebird user myself can anyone with list reviewer capabilities possibly
reach out to this user for further details? It could ofcourse also be a Pine
Warbler or something more expected of this time of year but since
Black-Throated Green was the initial ID here I can't help but be curious. I
attached the ebird checklist below. Thanks!

Ken McDermott called to relay that John Haas called has a WESTERN GREBE at
Piermont Pier, Rockland Co.
I just spoke to John and he said that the bird was initially seen mid pier on
the north side between the Pier and the jetty. It is now making its way out
into the river.

[nysbirds-l] Croton Point Lark Sparrow plus

2015-12-14 Thread Ryan MacLean
I along with several other people had great looks at the Lark Sparrow at Croton
Point today between 2-3 PM. The bird does tend to wander around the area at the
bottom of the nature center driveway but with some quiet persistence it usually
comes back to the area, often in the company of House Sparrows or Juncos. There
were several Golden-Crowned Kinglets in the nearby spruces as well.

Stefan Martin and I birded the rest of the park afterwards which yielded
atleast 5 Savannah Sparrows, 2 American Tree Sparrows and a Northern Harrier on
the Landfill as well as a Catbird in the phragmites east of the Landfill.
Whoever is doing the Peekskill Christmas Count there this Saturday take note.

Oftentimes there are better looks (and light) on the other side of the fence
(on the road/path). And generally no photo bullies hogging spots.

[nysbirds-l] Extralimital: ZONE TAILED HAWK New Haven CT

2015-09-20 Thread Ryan MacLean
Zone Tailed Hawk reported at Lighthouse Point Park hawkwatch in New Haven CT at

an eye out this week.

Thanks Rob. It was there about 45 minutes ago when we left. Right at water's
edge facing the Wollman rink.

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope Jones Beach NO

2015-07-25 Thread Ryan Candee
I, together with several other hapless souls encountered along the way, spent
the first half of the day covering the area around the duck blind with no
results. Checking the bay by the coast guard station was similarly fruitless.
