[nysbirds-l] SPOTTED SANDPIPER, Somers
Apologies for the late report- A Spotted Sandpiper yesterday (1/25) at Deans’s Bridge, Somers, was an immense surprise. The bird was later observed on a rock in the middle of the reservoir looking north from the bridge where rt. 116 crosses Muscoot Res. in Purdy’s, and some bad digiscoped photos obtained. Bird was relocated an hour or two later right under the rt. 116 bridge in Purdy’s but immediately flushed, headed north, & could not be relocated. A check of the Purdy's bridge this morning turned up no trace of the bird, either. [nysbirds-l] 4 Golden Eagles, Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, Bedford
A lovely day (10/27) at the watch here, with the highlight 4 subadult Golden Eagles, a really nice daily total for Chestnut Ridge. The first bird that passed was relatively close, and digiscoped pictures taken then allowed it to be aged as a Basic I. The three others that showed about 20 minutes later were soaring together in the same scope view at one point (!). Other highlights included a N. Goshawk, 7th of the season for the watch, and a total of 27 Red-shouldereds for the day. [nysbirds-l] Swainson's Hawk, Chestnut Ridge HW, Bedford
Genevieve Rozhon and Angela Woodside, (Hawk Counter and Hawkwatch Intern, respectively,at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch in Bedford), had a light-morph Swainson's Hawk today (9/11) from the watch, a very nice find. An excerpt from Genevieve's notes: This bird was first observed at 17h15 to the SE of the hawkwatch site (bird first noted as a Buteo flying with wings held in an usually prominent dihedral). The bird was seen thermaling above a cell phone tower with two BWs. The primary and secondary hawk counters were able to observe the bird for roughly 5 minutes before it streamed SE and out of sight. The primary counter observed the bird in her spotting scope, recognized the bird as a SWHA, and detected a pale belly on the bird along with the diagnostic dark flight feathers. Unfortunately, the distance at which the bird was observed prevented her from being able to determine whether the bird as an adult or juvenile SWHA. [nysbirds-l] Retraction on Orange-crowned
Tried sending the below e-mail earlier, but it appears to have not gone through: My apologies- wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself, but the "Orange-crowned" song is actually being produced by a Swamp Sparrow. The most atypical, weakest, most varying-in-volume song I've ever heard from a Swamp Sparrow. Sung very quietly. The song was so much like an Orange-crowned that even when I saw the bird producing it (which was undeniably a Swamp Sparrow) I kept kind of feeling like it must just be lip- (bill-)synching, and that any second a real Orange crowned would suddenly jump out from behind it and reveal it was actually the one making the sound. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe still at J. Bay
A Bedford Audubon Society field trip to Jamaica Bay today (11/15) produced 54 species, including the continuing Eared Grebe, seen hanging with a small group of Horned Grebes and Buffleheads, on the bay just south of Bench 7 by the West Pd. Could not find the previously reported drake Eurasian Wigeon on the East Pd. There was one Great Cormorant there, along with many Ruddy Ducks and an array of other waterfowl. [nysbirds-l] Com. Redpoll, Snow Buntings, pipits, larks- Croton Point area
Some of the more notable birds found this morning on a Bedford Audubon Society field trip to Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson: At the top of the old landfill: Abt. 25 Am. Pipits Abt. 20 Horned Larks 2 Snow Buntings 1 N. Harrier 2 Am. Tree Sparrows -and a flyover Com. Redpoll. Many migrating flocks of Canada Geese well overhead; 2 Snow Geese with one flock of Canadas. The old landfill area clearly has fewer raptors and sparrows around it this winter so far, presumably because of lack of habitat due to it having all been mowed near the end of the growing season. on wooded hillside on N. side of road before gatehouse: 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker At Black Rock Park, Croton-on-Hudson: 2 N. [nysbirds-l] barring on the Jones Beach shrike's back?
I have only seen this bird at a great distance through a scope, but if you look at Phil Jeffrey's second photo and size it "Large": http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil-jeffrey/5198713688/sizes/l/in/photostream/ it may be just how the feathers are arranged, but doesn't it look like there's some faint brownish or grayish barring on the small part of the back you can see? Which, if that's not an illusion, I gather from Keven McGowan's review http://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/loggerhd.htm would point to a young Loggerhead. Anyone get any high-resolution closeups of more of its back? [nysbirds-l] Broadwing, etc. flight on Sun.
Yesterday (4/18), there was a pretty good raptor flight over the Bedford Audubon Society's HQ in Lewisboro. Over the course of about three hours during an optics show given by Jerry Connolly of the Audubon Shop in Madison, CT, we counted 98 Broad-winged Hawks, 2 Red-tails, 1 Osprey, an adult Bald Eagle, 1 Sharpshin, and one kestrel- the largest spring raptor flight I've seen at this location. Just about all the birds were quite high and headed roughly northeast. Tait Johansson Lewisboro _ The New Busy is not the old busy. [nysbirds-l] Pink-footed Goose at Sunken Meadow SP 11/7
As Christine Guarino kindly posted earlier for us when we were out in the field, Jodi Brodsky and I were lucky enough to refind the previously reported Pink-footed Goose this afternoon (11/7) at Sunken Meadow State Park. We were leaving the park headed south on the Sunken Meadow Parkway (having found neither the Pinkfoot nor the Barnacle Goose), when, only about a hundred yards after crossing Sunken Meadow Creek, Jodi noticed a flock of about 30 geese headed north almost straight toward us. We immediately pulled over, jumped out of the car, and, as the flock of Canadas went right over us (they were quite low), had a nice look at the Pink-footed ensconced in it. This was at about 3:05 PM. The birds definitely landed somewhere in Sunken Meadow Creek west of the bridge. We tried to find the bird again by scoping from the bridge, but it was not visible among the 50 or so Canadas that could be seen in the creek there. There were definitely more geese in the creek than we could see; at one point, about 10 Canadas flew up from the the area of Phragmites "islands" in the creek that can be seen from this bridge to the northwest (they flew up from just in back of the Osprey platform visible from the bridge). Sorry for the novella; just wanted to give as much information as possible about location and times for future searchers. Near as we could tell, the flock was headed almost due north when we saw them; maybe that'll help someone figure out where the the bird's spending its day. A few additional highlights of our day on Long Is. included one American Golden Plover still with a huge flock of Dunlins, Black-bellied Plovers, and a few Red Knots on the beach just west of Field 6 at Jones Beach, and 2 drake Harlequin Ducks at Jones Inlet (Pt. Lookout).
