[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture behavior

2024-01-18 Thread Andrew Block
Saw interesting Black Vulture behavior just now.  Four were sitting on the
chimneys of a house across from mine warming up in this cold.  I had never seen
animals of any kind doing this.  Just shows how smart they are.  They were only
on ones with smoke coming out.  Cool stuff.

On Saturday afternoon at Croton Point Park I had three black vultures two in
and out of road picking at road kill; but the third was just sitting goose-like
in the grass. It was not injured as gone by the time I left CPP. See photos in
ebird link. I do not ever recall seeing such behavior of a vulture turkey or
black. Is anyone familiar with it?

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture low over Edgemont H.S.

2019-05-09 Thread Andrew Block
While passing by Edgemont H.S. I noticed a Black Vulture low over the school.
I have seen a pair of them fairly regularly in the vicinity over the last few
years so they must be breeding somewhere nearby.  I would love to find the
nest.  Very cool.

RE:[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture in Queens

2019-04-13 Thread Steve Walter
Another Black Vulture at Alley Creek today, heading east. I saw a post from
Tim Healy of two Black Vultures over Hempstead Lake State Park. Is there
something going on? Actually, I wonder what took them so long to discover
Long Island. They're quite comfortable in coastal areas in Florida. They do
like fish.

Other interesting moment of the day - a high kettle of 17 (seemingly
migrating) Fish Crows (or at least their version of a kettle).

Subject: Black Vulture in Queens

Finally, after all these years, I got a Black Vulture in Queens County. Of
course, it took a lot of deliberately looking up in the sky at what I dare
call the Alley Creek Hawk Watch. Yea, there are a few coming through here,
although the kind of Turkey Vulture flight seen last year has not
materialized this season (no more than 10 in a day). Today's flight was led
by 18 Ospreys and 7 Northern Harriers. While there was actually a better day
for Harriers last year, I was surprised to see 4 in the sky at once. 3 were
in a kettle. As some of you know, that's call a Three Ring Circus.

While the heading of most migrants here averages east-northeast, the Black
Vulture was heading west. That may very well be valid for a migrant on Long
Island. I've considered the wintering populations of Turkey Vulture,
Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks, which are more common in winter than
summer, and what route they might take to move to summer territories.

Aside from raptors, there was a continuous movement of Double-crested
Cormorants, although most groups were small. A few Great Egrets and Great
Blue Herons added to the flight.

In non-migrant notes, the Killdeer pair is nesting again on the lawn. I
assume there are the standard four eggs, but don't want to disturb them to
confirm. A single Common Raven has been coming around with some regularity,
sometimes quite low right over me. There is also a pair that I haven't seen
in over a week, potentially moving to a nesting location not too far away.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture movement & other sightings, Rockefeller SPP, Westchester County

2018-02-12 Thread Anne Swaim
We observed an interesting movement of 19 Black Vultures at Rockefeller
State Park Preserve this morning on Saw Mill River Audubon's 2nd Mon bird
walk there.

Twelve drifting together north and 7 others seen around the Swan Lake
area.

There have been good numbers of Black Vultures with the Turkey Vulture
roost just 6 mile N by the Village of Croton-on-Hudson but not as many BLVU
recorded there in last couple of months with the temperature swings.

Noted this ref in Cornell's Birds of North America online resource: "Black
Vultures also engage in short-term, local movements when weather becomes
unfavorable, retiring ahead of adverse conditions and returning when
conditions improve."
https://birdsna.org/Species-Account/bna/species/blkvul/distribution

Among other observations this morning at RSPP were:
* a small group of six Snow Geese headed northwest over Swan Lake,
* Northern Cardinals and Song Sparrows both now singing,
* and -- always enjoyable -- great looks at three adult Bald Eagles.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture in Cutchogue

2017-01-16 Thread Steve Walter
Finally, after 35 years of birding, I got a Black Vulture on Long Island.
This was on the way back from the Townsend's Solitaire, in the Cutchogue
area. I traversed Alvah's Lane in search of the previously reported Ross'
Geese, but didn't find any geese at all. But that led me to a frenzy of
gulls, which turned out to be at the Peconic Recycling and Transfer Corp.,
off Depot Lane. And over the large field beyond it, I saw a small number of
vultures - one of which was not like the others.

As for the Townsend's Solitaire, it was mostly in sight between 8:30 and
9:30, and then again between 11:10 and 12:30. Yea, I spent a lot of time
there. I came home with 365 pictures. And while that would suggest it was
cooperative, it faced me much of the time. So I held out hoping to get side
view pictures and the wing pattern. I posted one at
http://stevewalternature.com/ . By the way, 365 is not my record for one
bird. I recall 366 as the number I took of a Red Phalarope at Shinnecock a
few years ago. Had I known I was that close. But I don't know if that's my
record anyway. Too silly a thing to commit to memory.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture and Marbled Godwit on barrier beaches (Suffolk)

2016-10-02 Thread John Gluth
An otherwise slow day at the Fire Island hawk watch (only 20 raptors from
7:30-2:00) was brightened when a BLACK VULTURE soared westward in the early
afternoon. I refound the vulture later (~3:15) in the parking lot of Oak Beach
town park. Farther west down Oak Beach Rd., I scoped the inlet flats from the
small fisherman's lot. Among the sizeable congregation of gulls, terns and
shorebirds was a continuing MARBLED GODWIT (first seen 9/17) and a Royal Tern.
Between the hawk watch and Oak Beach I spent 30 minutes checking the marsh
north of Captree Island, where there were at least 70 Great Egrets.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Black Vulture

2015-03-11 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Hi Orhan and all,

There was indeed a Black Vulture at Montauk in early March 2000. Patricia
Lindsay and I saw it on 5 March and were very excited, given the species' real
rarity on Long Island at that time. It would be seven years before we saw
another Black Vulture on LI.

On second thought I am not sure I have seen a Black Vulture in Montauk around
2000, It may have been my first Turkey Vulture, I started birding around that
time.
But I am sure I saw Black Vultures somewhere around Doodletown, around that
time.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture

2015-03-11 Thread Orhan Birol
On Monday 3/9 on my way to the ferry from NYC I saw a Black Vulture by the
High School in Greenport.
As I had locked myself out of my house later for more than an hour after my
daily walk and had a lot to do around the house I rushed the report with no
details:
I saw the vulture west of the school soaring east(north side of 25) and
descending towards the school. I assumed it was a Turkey Vulture until I
was in line with the school where I saw the vulture beat its wings, and
that is where I first noticed the whitish wing tips and finally the lack of
grey on the underwing which clinched the ID.
In my original report I used the term hovering instead of beating its wings
this was a mistake and it was the moment where I noticed that the vulture
was all BLACK, except the wing tips. I did not see any flash of red in the
head.
This is the second Black Vulture, I have seen in LI. The first was in
Monatuk around 2000, I don't know the exact date as I have lost all my
records when my Thayer's crashed years ago.

Scanned from Galeville Town park for the evening raptor show (from 4pm to

Vultures, a BLACK VULTURE, 13 Northern Harriers, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 8
SHORT-EARED OWLS, and 2 Red-tailed Hawks. We also had a COYOTE hunting for
mice and providing great scope views for all. A really neat spot.

I'm pleased to report that the assembled birders and photographers had a

Hi all,
For those currently on manhattan island, there is presently (~1pm) a black
vulture soaring with 2 peregrines, four turkey vultures, and a northern harrier
over midtown in the lower 50s. From my vantage on the east side, the birds look
to be over the central portion of the island, drifting toward the Hudson. Nice
raptor flight ongoing today here, more to post later.

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture, White-fronted Goose - Hartland, Niagara County

2010-03-14 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
With the rain about over this afternoon, Betsy and I took the opportunity to
get some birding in this weekend. Our best sighting, a milestone bird for
me, was a BLACK VULTURE along Somerset-Hartland Townline Road at Drum Road.
When first seen in flight as we were driving, it was being harassed by a
crow. I thought it would turn out to be a Red-tailed Hawk (it was not lit
well and may have been partially obscured by treetops). At some point,
since I was not seeing a pale body, I decided to pull over and put the bins
on it. Suddenly, I nailed my life Niagara County bird #300! It shortly
landed in a tree and I took some quick digiscoped images but a real
Red-tailed Hawk came along and put it up, despite the vulture’s much larger
size. What a wimp! We watched the bird off and on over the next 20 minutes
or so, occasionally near two Turkey Vultures, frequently losing it behind
trees. It seemed to want to set down in a spruce plantation, and I think it
did for a short spell. Eventually we lost it for about five minutes and
decided to leave. We made a pass through the area about an hour later but
did not stop long and did not see it again. I have put a couple of images
up on Betsy’s web site (address below). Click on “ Willie’s Photos”, then
“Recent Photos”.

We checked out the field at the southwest quadrant of Somerset-Hartland
Townline Road and Johnson Creek Road, which is about ½ mile west of where we
saw the vulture. It had a lot of geese and ducks and while we were there,
several massive flocks of a few thousand more geese dropped in. I was able
to pick out a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE just before it landed but we were never
able to find it on the ground among the throngs of Canadas. There were 1100
NORTHERN PINTAILS here, as well as a handful each of AMERICAN WIGEON, BLACK
DUCK, MALLARD, and RING-NECKED DUCK. There were also at least nine and as
many as 15 CACKLING GEESE – I kept finding groups of three Cacklers and I
was unsure if these were the same birds I had already seen.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Black Vulture (Braddock Bay) and Snowy Owl (Somerset)

2010-01-16 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
I did some chasing today and got to see two nice birds. :> ) The Black
Vulture was at the Braddock Bay west spit, Monroe County. The bird came in
and landed in the trees right next to the end of the road but we never saw
it go to one of the two deer carcasses nearby. It looked fairly healthy, I
thought. Exit the Lake Ontario Parkway at Manitou Beach Road, go north to
Lake Ontario and turn right. The road ends shortly. One carcass is easily
seen, the other is behind the concrete barrier. Please give the bird some
space, even though from previous reports, it may not seem to care much.

The Snowy Owl was in the usual field at Sawyer Cemetery in the Town of
Somerset, Niagara County. I missed it in the morning, probably because I
did not get out of the car and only looked from two spots - I think I was
too low as the owl was in a furrow. I found it on the return trip, only
about 150-200 yards south of the cemetery. This small cemetery is
surrounded by a huge field and the Snowy can be anywhere.

Good birding!
