Apologies. It was extremely cold, and I should have provided more detail. The bird appeared in the tall spruce south of Old Fort Road in Wallkill at 2:58 PM. Although I know that Zach's email is in reference to the Wallkill Gyr, it still might be helpful to out-of-state birders and others to provide a more specific location when posting these updates. [nysbirds-l] Gyr Falcon Update
As I have had many inquiries to as to parking at the "new location" for the bird, I thought I should update what I know (think). Approx. 5 minutes after my last post, that noted a "new location", the bird flew in a straight line toward the direction of Old Fort Rd. Although we were back in the area of Hoagerburgh and Old Fort Rd., within minutes, we never relocated the bird. I would suggest, that this was merely an expansion of the birds hunting area and perhaps just a place where it goes when we have been unable to locate it in the past. I would guess that the bird will continue with its previous habits and would offer the Bruyn Rd. location as an option to check only when unable to locate on Old Fort Rd. Of course, this is all conjecture as I can not read the birds mind. As to the parking questions regarding parking along Bruyn Tpk.there are NO parking options. [nysbirds-l] Gyr Location update
Here is what Carl Safina had to say about where he saw the Gyr yesterday at Jones Beach (Nassau Co.), I suspect that before we saw it, it went from Zach’s, where I suspect it was the cause of the mass uprising of Brant that we saw (but did not see a raptor then) up the parkway, where we first saw it less than five minutes after the Brant settled back in Zack’s. At our first sighting the Gyr was flying north at the north end of the southernmost of the Wantagh bridges, on the west side of the parkway. We followed as it went north for maybe another mile, then we lost it behind some trees on the west side of the parkway, still along the water.
