[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon in Seneca Falls area

2018-12-15 Thread Kyle Brock
I had heard some reports that the Gyrfalcon had returned to the area south
of Seneca Falls New York. I confirmed those reports shortly before sunset
at the Seneca Stone Company Quarry at Canoga and Hoster roads. Be advise
that this is a difficult bird to chase, as it hunts over a wide territory
during the day, from my prior experience with it. Good luck to any who try
:)

I was able to view a perched Gyrfalcon from the platform at the Wallkill
National Wildlife Preserve tonight, at sunset. It was distant, but was flushed
by several Northern Harriers and then the Gyrfalcon flew towards me. I have
pictures for documentary purposes. I recommend scopes/binoculars for viewing.
An exciting bird for Orange County!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon updates??

2015-12-26 Thread Tim Healy
I was on location all day, watched the sun rise and set. Scanned Blue Chip,
Shawangunk, and roads along the river between Walkill and Gardiner. Lots of
birders were on site and no one encountered the falcon. The Greater
White-fronted Goose continues in the flock at Blue Chip, and some of us spotted
two Cackling Geese among the many Canadas roosting at Old Fort Road's pond. A
handful of Short-eared Owls and Northern Harriers put on twilight show at
Shawangunk, closing the day on a high note. Good luck to anyone who tries to
relocate the Gyr.

Cheers!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon updates??

2015-12-26 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
I understand as of 2 pm today the gyrfalcon had not been seen and many birders
were looking all day. I also read on an NjBIRDS post that a photographer
acknowledges finding a Gyr viewing location yesterday afternoon where he was
"hidden" behind an evergreen that allowed for "optimal viewing". The bird then
took off or so the report states (and apparently has not been seen by anyone
since). I don't know him and certainly can't judge how close he got or the
propriety of a photographer getting close to such a rare bird -- a topic of
much comment through the years -- or whether his proximity had anything to do
with the bird taking off. It may just be hunkered down on this overcast day and
will show up again at Blue Chip Farm later today or tomorrow. I can say the
linked photo is really an excellent one. His photos are posted under the nom
de plume "Larry Bird". As a Celtics fan since birth and growing up in Boston
during the Russell, Havlicek, Sam and KC Jones era you just can't call yourself
Larry Bird -- there being only one. Go Celts. Good luck with the Gyr if you're
there or if you go. Would be a lifer for me.

Hi all,
At sunrise today Rich Fried and I were on the dock at Cedar Beach Marina with
hopes to see the Gyrfalcon that was found on Wednesday and seen yesterday
morning. After a couple of hours and with 3 other birders also looking for it
we decided to go and check other locations.

When we arrived at Gilgo the fog had rolled in and it was so thick that we
could barely discern the gates and perhaps half of the parking lot. You
couldn't even tell that there was a dock and water beyond. So we turned around
and drove back. Cedar Beach was also socked in fog by then so we continued to
Captree, which was virtually void of birds. Next we stopped at the Coast Guard
Station, where the sand bar was occupied by a large flock of Brant, regular
gulls and a few shorebirds.

At West End II we found a large flock of Snow Buntings (120+) that was moving
between the swale and parking lot.

After another stop at Cedar Beach Marina we made our last stop at Point
Lookout, where we enjoyed watching one male Harlequin Duck, 4 Purple Sandpiper,
a handful of Sanderling and cirka one hundred Dunlin on one of the breakwaters.
Common and Red-throated Loons were on the water, small flocks of Black Scoters
flew west to east, and further out a dozen or so Northern Gannets were feeding.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon ?

2015-12-11 Thread Arie Gilbert

Jack et al,

After Doug's report yesterday , we arrived ~ 9:30 to be told that the
bird had just flown. Many people were on station at Cedar beach; I was
there until 2:30 but the bird had not returned. it is a BIG area. Most
likely the bird is the same one that has been in this area before, and
will return to one or more favored perches.

The morning maybe the best time, today not withstanding due to the fog,

so... you may get it right away, or you may have to wait a long time, or
you may dip, like I did yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon at Cedar Beach Marina (Suffolk County)

2015-12-09 Thread Ken Feustel
Yesterday Sue and I observed a large gray falcon briefly sitting on an Osprey
platform in the salt marsh north of the Cedar Beach Marina (CBM). Before we
could even get out of the car to look at the bird it dropped off the platform
and flew low over marsh before abruptly pouncing on something hidden in the
marsh grass. We stayed an additional hour in anticipation of the bird showing
itself - which it never did. The light gray back, large bulky body, broad,
pointed wings and manner of flight all suggested a Gyrfalcon, but the
observation was too brief to be sure. We entered the sighting in E-bird as
”large falcon sp.”.

Today a brief stop at CBM in the morning yielded only a Peregrine Falcon on the
Osprey Platform. However, we had alerted another birder of the possibility that
a Gyr was present, and in the early afternoon we received a phone call that the
Gyrfalcon was being observed north of the marina, perched in a lone Cedar tree
out on the marsh. Upon arriving, the bird was sitting in the Cedar,
interestingly the same tree used by the last Gyfalcon seen in this location a
few years ago. The bird, seen from a distance with a spotting scope, was
heavy-bodied, resembling a Red-tailed Hawk. The light gray back with light
feather edgings was observed, as well as the weak, narrow mustache stripe.
During our observation of well over an hour, we observed the bird tussle with a
Peregrine Falcon, chase a Black Duck (he missed) and grab two unidentified prey
items, always flying back to the lone Cedar tree after presumably devouring its
prey. The bird was too far away for my meager telephoto, but usable photos were
obtained and will be posted to e-bird in the near future by another birder. Our
observation of the birds behavior gave us no reason to believe this bird was an
escapee from a falconer.

A word about access. Cedar Beach Marina is usually open during the week when
maintenance people need to get in. The facility is open on the weekend if there
is some special event being held there, which does not happen frequently at
this time of year. If the facility is closed my recommendation is to park at
Cedar Overlook on the south side of the Ocean Parkway, (opens anywhere from 9
to 10AM on weekends) walk west past the 9/11 Memorial on your left then out the
entrance of Cedar Beach to the parkway. Cross the parkway carefully and walk in
the main entrance to the marina. You could also park outside the entrance to
the marina and take your chances with the gendarmes.

Good Birding,

Ken & Sue Feustel

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon- Gardiner NY

2015-02-28 Thread Chrissy G
I found the Gyrfalcon this morning on the Wallkill River in Gardiner NY. I
stopped to look at some Canada Geese in the open water, found one Snow
Goose, a few Mallards and a Bald Eagle. A bit upstream on the ice, I found
the Gyr eating what looks like a duck. I watched it for about 15 minutes
and a Bald Eagle flew over it and it flew away. I even took a terrible
photo through my binocs with my cell phone,

I could see it circle the large island in the river so I have a feeling it
didn't go far. It's the only open water in the area which has some
waterfowl, so perhaps the Gyr will feed here for a while. There aren't
many good places to pull off the roads in this area so please be respectful
of people who live here and don't block roadways.

Gardiner has a few eateries and businesses so please patronize them and
show them that birders are great visitors!

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon this morning: NO

2015-02-14 Thread Corey Finger
Carrie Laben and I spent from early AM through 10:30 AM trying to find the
Gyrfalcon with no luck. It apparently is most reliable in the afternoon.

Only birds of note during our visit were two Rough-legged Hawks (one at
Shawangunk, one along Hoagerburgh), 2 Bald Eagles at the spillway on the
Wallkill River, Common Goldeneyes, Hooded Mergansers, and a Common
Merganser downstream from the spillway, an American Kestrel on Bruyn
Turnpike, a Peregrine Falcon on Bates Lane, and a couple of Horned Lark
flocks around Blue Chip Farm.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon NO 2/12

2015-02-12 Thread Gabriel Willow
David Burg and I scoured the area around Blue Chip Farm & the Shawangunk
Grasslands in Wallkill for the Gyrfalcon today from about 9-1. We did not
locate the bird; however, we also noted a surprising absence of other birders,
only encountering 2 or 3, so it's entirely possible the bird was hiding out
somewhere undetected (there's a lot of meadows & woods to cover up there).

We went down Old Hoagerburgh Rd, Bates Ln/ Old Fort Rd, Burnt Meadows Rd, Red
Mill Rd & Watchtower Farm, and Sax/Sac Rd, to no avail.

However, we had a lovely morning and some other nice sightings:

Numerous Red-tailed Hawk (at least 9)
Rough-legged Hawk (2 dark morph & 2-3 light morph, mostly at the Grasslands)
Turkey Vulture (2)
Black Vulture (2)
Merlin (1 female)
American Kestrel (1 male)
Wild Turkey (flock of 19)
Pileated Woodpecker (a confiding pair at close range)
Eastern Bluebird (flock of 5 at Grasslands parking lot)
American Tree Sparrow
Typical feeder birds (titmice, chickadees, juncos, song sparrow etc)

I hope others locate the falcon!

Good winter birding,

Gabriel Willow

2015-02-09 Thread Curt McDermott
Gyrfalcon new location. Having not has enough earlier today, Clara and I
returned to see the Gyr again. It is currently on Bruyn Tpk., 1/2 mile east of
the intersection of Hoagerburgh Rd. The bird is perched across the field
directly across from 350 Bruyn Tpk. As a second reference point, there is a
yellow excavator on the property to the left of the bird. When we first came
upon it, it was feeding over a kill about 100yrds out in the field. NOTE:
there is no shoulder on the side of the road!!! If you cross the white line,
you will be towed out just as we were, in our 4x4 vehicle.

Good luck,
   Curt & Clara McDermott

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon at Blue Chip Farms, Wallkill, NY

2015-02-06 Thread Andrew Block
Since I haven't seen a post on this bird I figured I'd let people know that a
Gyrfalcon was photographed by someone on the Blue Chip Farm next to Shawangunk
Grasslands NWR in Wallkill today.  The photos were on Facebook on the NY
Birders page.  Don't know anything else about it.  Hope I can get a chance to
see it.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon(white) in Plattsburgh

2015-01-13 Thread Brian McAllister
Sorry for this late post...just getting to a computer. At 12:45pm
today(Tuesday) I saw a gyrfalcon(white) sitting on the ice at the mouth of the
Saranac River in Plattsburgh. It was observed for about 3-4 minutes then it
took off, circled over me(gaining altitude, flapping and gliding so I could see
pure white underside and black wingtips), then flew off to the south. I would
concentrate on looking along the shoreline from Plattsburgh south to
Ticondaroga over the next few days. There are concentrated areas of waterfowl &
gulls due to ice formation.Brian McAllisterSaranac Lake

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon at Fort Tilden, maybe not

2014-03-03 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
One of the main factors separating my final two choices, Peregrine Falcon
or Gyrfalcon, for id'ing was the pattern and color of the plumage. The
finally decision I made was based primarily on the fact that the Gyrfalcon
had different pattens and an overall darker color that the tundra race of
the Peregrine Falcon. I forgot that when the Peregrines were re-introduced
a mix of races was used, not just the tundra. The fact that a dark-colored
Peregrine is a definite possibility in NYC makes my id uncertain.

I'll have to scratch Gyrfalcon off my life list :P

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon in Fort Tilden NYC - No

2014-03-03 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
I tried to relocate the Gyrfalcon I saw Wednesday, but I had no luck. I
didn't have a chance to try the paths that run through the northern part of
the park though. I will try that area next time. The beaches were fairly
active with lots of Long-tailed Ducks, and a few Loons and Scoters.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon in Fort Tilden Queens NYC

2014-02-26 Thread Joseph O'Sullivan
I saw a very large falcon late this afternoon in Fort Tilden. It looked
identical to the dark adult Gyrfalcon in Sibley's, and after watching it
for nearly five minutes I id'ed it as a Gyrfalcon and entered it into
ebird. I also had some great views of more common birds, like long tail
ducks, common eiders and a black scoter.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon - Maybe not so

2014-02-20 Thread richard guthrie
After some further review of the reported "Gyrfalcon" at the Shawangunk
Grasslands from Feb. 16th, maybe the bird is not a Gyrfalcon after all.

The photos were not all that clear and suggest immature Red-shouldered Hawk
as well.

Without further sightings or better evidence, prospective "chasers" might
stand down for now.

Sorry,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2014-01-22 Thread Arie Gilbert

I had an all too short but good look at the Gyrfalcon on the wing by
Tobay Beach, as it flew west ~noon on Saturday the 18th.

It appears to be covering a very wide area, and its moving about may
be influenced by harassment from Peregrines. Also, vantage points
are very limited given the amount of habitat. Search via small boat
would be the most productive method if one were available.

The Gyrfalcon was just seen by Sam Janazzo and I from the Gilgo Beach
parking lot (1:30 pm). Unfortunately, we took our eyes off the Osprey

noting that two Peregrines were present on nearby platforms. Also present
was an American Bittern in flight over the marsh.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon sightings

2013-03-07 Thread Shane Blodgett
As I have been out of town for last 2 weeks I may be one of the few that has
not had a chance to look for this bird. If anyone has seen the Gyr this week or
sees it today or tomorrow I would appreciate a heads-up. Negative reports also
appreciated.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2013-03-04 Thread Robert Bate
This morning after seeing no Gyrfalcon action at Gilgo, Anthony Iesu and
myself teamed up to make an attempt to find the bird elsewhere. From the
Cedar Beach parking lot we took the tunnel under Ocean Parkway and emerged
near the Cedar Beach Marina. The Gyrfalcon was perched on the Osprey nest
due north of the east end of the marina grounds. I got some terrible
digiscope photos of the bird but it took of before Anthony could get his
real camera set up.

I assumed the bird was headed to Gilgo's platforms but it had not shown up
when I got back there an hour or so later.

Additionally, the Red Necked Grebe continues in the Captree Marina and the
female Barrow's Goldeneye continues off Oak Beach in the company of a small
flotilla of Common Goldeneyes.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon 3/2 Specifics

2013-03-02 Thread David
I lucked out this afternoon and happened upon Jeff, Malcolm and Jackie (all
from PA) as they were just about to follow the Gyr which had just taken to
flight.

In short, the Gyr was viewable from this location:
Gilgo Beach, Babylon, NY 11702

We caught up with a falcon which turned out to be one of the peregrines perched
on an osprey platform.

Just as the other three observers were about to leave, I looked back at the
"big square platform" which is basically directly across from the parking lot
-- it looks almost like a bandstand with no sides in the middle of the wetlands
-- and as others have described, the bird almost magically appeared. It was
large, bulky and long tailed.

I yelled to the others and it was their turn to be lucky as this bird turn out
to be the Gyrfalcon.

We were then treated to quite a show as, a few minutes later, the Gyr took off
across the flats, flying to the west within several feet of the ground, then
rising up over the low treeline and then back down again.
At one point it wheeled around giving us a great view of its light underside.

Jackie was able to continue to follow it as it appeared to knock down and grab,
in the wing, some species of waterfowl. When it finally landed on the platform
nearest us, displacing the peregrine, it did not have the duck.

We were, however, given great views of the bird from about 300 yds., as it sat
with its back to us and fended off the diving peregrine.

I got one photo of the stand off

http://www.flickr.com/photos/31219780@N03/

What a beautiful bird!

Thanks to all for posting continued updates.

Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon & Red-necked Grebe - Yes

2013-02-26 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Hoping for a closer and longer view of the Gyrfalcon, than I had on this past
Sunday, I headed down to Gilgo.this morning.. I took it to be a good omen when,
as I turned on to the Ocean Pkwy from Robert Moses Pkwy, I passed a male
N,Harrier (aka "The Gray Ghost").as he headed toward Captree SP.
As I approached the w/s of Gilgo's p/lot, and saw Derek Rodgers sprinting to
his car to get his spotting scope, while everyone else was tracking a fast
moving object, I knew the gyr was still in the neighborhood !
After some time elapsed, the bird settled on one of it's preferred perches, the
middle osprey platform, in the marsh on the w/s of the dock. This time, the
Gyrfalcon set down facing us, providing us with very satisfying looks of it's
best side - the quality of these views being enhanced by the opportunity to use
Drew Panko's Meade Telescope - yesss !
I then continued on to Jones Beach, but found nothing of note.
Heading toward home, I once again tried for the Captree Boat Basin Red-necked
Grebe, and this time was successful. The bird was seen in the company of
Red-breasted Mergansers, which grew from 2 to 6 birds. This group spent all of
time I was there near the e/end of the fishing boats/dock.
Cheers,Bob

There were lots of people looking for the Gyrfalcon at Gilgo today but no
one that I met had a confirmed sighting. At one point we saw three large,
very distant, falcons in flight and one was obviously larger than the
others. The larger bird took off from the beach of one of the distant
islands that can be seen from the west end of the Gilgo Beach Inn parking
lot. Apparently the Gyr perched in the same spot yesterday after killing a
duck. The larger bird was being harassed by one of the smaller ones. We were
leaning towards Gyr but we thought that the size difference could
alternatively be attributed to a large female peregrine. The birds were so
far away that we could not be sure. Bring a Celestron!

The osprey platforms and channel markers east and west of the Gilgo Beach
Inn parking lot seem to be good places to look, but they only hosted
peregrines for us.

Does anyone have a positive report to share? It would be great to get some
more info out there so that people driving from far afield may have a
better chance of success.

Thanks,
Bert Harris, Princeton, NJ

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2012-01-14 Thread Hugh McGuinness
I just received photos from Carl Safina of a gray Gyrfalcon he found this
afternoon around 1pm along the Wantagh Parkway. Although I do not have an
exact location (and am trying to get one), he reports that the bird was
along the water, so it must have been along the south end of the Wantagh
just north of Jones Beach. I will post more info if it becomes available.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon: an honorary seabird with little taste for change

2011-06-21 Thread Angus Wilson
I hope this isn't too far off-topic but I came across a couple fascinating
new(ish) findings about Gyrfalcon, a rare and much lusted after vagrant to
New York.

First, tracking studies by Dr. Kurt Burnham (High Arctic Institute, Illinois
US and the University of Oxford, UK) and Dr. Ian Newton (Centre for Ecology
and Hydrology, Oxford University, UK) of Gyrs nesting in Greenland has
revealed that some effectively winter at sea. These studies will be
published in the July issue of The Ibis [Burnham, KK and I Newton (2011)
Seasonal movements of Gyrfalcons Falco rusticolus include extensive periods
at sea. Ibis 153(3): 468-484].

A juvenile female in their study population traveled more than 2,800 miles
(4,500 km) over 200 days, spending more half that time over the ocean
between Greenland and Iceland. Now of course these are areas of winter pack
ice and the birds can land on the ice, but still it's an extraordinary
adaptation for a non-waterbird. It makes sense that they might follow alcids
such as Black Guillemot and various gulls that exploit the edges of the sea
ice as their winter habitat. Like Peregrines, Gyrfalcons engage in long
over-water flights and there are a number of records of white-morph
(Greenland) birds coming aboard ships in the North Atlantic, closer to
Europe than Greenland.

Second, the same team have shown that generations of Gyrfalcons use the same
nesting ledge for hundreds if not thousands of years. Carbon dating of the
guano (evidently an extensive mound) in active nests has put the usage of
one site as far back as 2,360 to 2,740 years. They even dated a Gyrfalcon
feather to 670 years (I guess that would count as a family heirloom).
Unfortunately, this amazing continuity is threatened by the radical changes
in climate that are occurring in Greenland at the present time. Again, the
primary data was published in The Ibis [Burnham KK, Burnham, WA and I Newton
(2009) Gyrfalcon Falco rusticolus post-glacial colonization and extreme
long-term use of nest-sites in Greenland. Ibis 151:514-522].

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon - near New Paltz, NY

2010-03-08 Thread christine guarino
This afternoon (3/8/10) around 5:00 I saw a white morph Gyrfalcon on
Route 299 just east of New Paltz. It flew into a wetland area with
many dead trees at the intersection of South Elting Corners road and
Route 200 near Lowe's and across the street from a big Central Hudson
facility.

The bird is very obvious and should be there in the morning. It
appeared to be actively hunting and changing perches frequently. Keep
scanning the wetland area and the large dead tree where it originally
perched on Route 299 may be a habitual perch. The tree is right near
the Rodeway Inn and there is a Potter Bros billboard (if you're facing
west) and a Lotus billboard (if you're facing east) at the base of the
tree.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2009-10-29 Thread Angus Wilson
Jerry Liguori's insightful analysis was just what I hoping for and I'm sure
we all learned from it. The increasing availability of photos has also
helped to flesh out the identification and address (to the extent possible)
my initial concerns about ruling out a Gyr x ? hybrid, which I figured might
be causing the initial mixed conclusions by some very sharp observers. I
found John Gluth's shots (posted late last night on his flickr site)
particularly helpful in making up my own mind.

Please remember that Gyrfalcon _IS_ a statewide NYSARC review species (not
so subtle hint there) and let's hope the bird can be re-found soon so that
others may enjoy it and get to apply their new knowledge.

A lot of people across the state and well beyond have contributed to the
excellent discussion and we are indebted to Hugh McGuinness for throwing the
first pitch, so to speak.

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2009-10-29 Thread Jerry Lig

Someone sent me the responses on the bird list about the Jones Beach Gyrfalcon.
There seems to be a bit of controversy, I stated a few days ago to Hugh that it
was absolutely a young gray morph Gyrfalcon. However, I thought it was obvious
and did not give reasons why. My mistake, since it is necessary on such an
uncommonly encountered species.

First off the color of juvenile gray Gyrfalcons is browner on top than a
Peregrine (which often shows a slaty-brown tone to the uppersidenote that
juv dark Gyrs can be slaty-brown on top), also the malar mark is narrow (along
with the lack of a white cheek spot shown by most Peregrines and almost all
wild Tundrius birds), the spotting to the remiges and tail are much less
distinct (especially the topside of the tail), the head lacks a pale crown, the
underwing coverts are less 'checkered', the chest is not whiter than the body
(as is with most juv Peregrines), the flanks show a less "barred" appearance
than Peregrine, and also almost all juv Peregrines show "V" or diamond-shaped
markings to the undertail coverts (Gyrs are typically streaked).

On shape, the body is plump, the wings are stocky and less sharply tapered, and
the tail is long compared to Peregrine. These differences are slight but
evident on all Gyrs. The point of P9 being longer than P10 is not always
accurate, some Peregrines show this (I have photos of it). I may have left some
stuff out without going through photos at the moment, and there are also a few
other traits that separate the two species but I will leave that for my next
book.

There is incredible variation in Peregrine and Gyrfalcon plumages, in my
studies of Gyrfalcon I have seen birds that are "in-betweeners" as far as
morph. There are paler gray morphs that approach the paleness of white morphs
and darker gray morphs that lean towards dark morph, etc. Also, Anatum and
Peale's Peregrines resemble a Gyr in plumage more so than Tundrius, so that
discussion would have been more appropriate.

Falconry hybrids occur of course, but this bird is not one of them. There are
no jesses, bells, or rings on the bird, and the plumage is typical (I would say
perfect in every way) for Gyrfalcon. Having said that, even hybrids can look
like one parent and do not always take a "mix" of traits from both parents. So,
if this were a hybrid it would be impossible to tell based on plumage.

Feel free to post this response, I hope it helps, and hope the bird sticks
around for people,

[nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon

2009-10-28 Thread joe mahedy

I have to agree with Pete Gustas, the photos are clear and good for ID. I could
see hesitation to make such a call but it is probably more a fear of being
wrong publicly, but that shouldn't matter to anyone trying to learn.
I agree with Angus on one thing, the fact that people called it a tundrius
peregrine is puzzlingand maybe it was a case of birding by expectation,
which happens all the time. The comments Angus made below are good though and I
would like to learn from them, what is it to look for with the wing / tail
proportions? Also how do we work through the ID, by breaking the bird down as
far as shape and plumage? It would be a good learning experience and I await
Angus' thoughts and expertise.

I think the problem stems from people who are not familiar with a bird having
trouble making the commitment to an ID even when they are sure of what they
saw, wich should not detract from the photo ID.These photos are better than most
of the ones used in field guides that people probably refered to when trying to
ID this bird. The photos of this bird show that without a doubt 100% this bird
is a juv. gray morph Gyrfalcon. CASE CLOSED. I would take these photos over any
ones personal ID. These photos are not fuzzy or distant they show every plumage
detail that is necessary for an ID,WITH PHOTOS LIKE THESE you do not need the
actual observers observations.

Subject: Re: [nysbirds-l] Gyrfalcon at Jones beach

A number of people have chimed in with enthusiastic endorsements of the ID as a
Gyr (and they may well be right) but I am still puzzled by the fact that many
of the actual observers at the weekend were willing to accept it as a large
(tundrius) Peregrine, albeit with some hesitancy. Otherwise, why weren't there
any headline postings from that day?

Is it because the overall jizz did not quite fit with people's
expectations/experience? This worries me. To be fair, a bird can sometimes be
too close or in an unfamiliar context and this confounds an otherwise
straightforward ID. A good example of this is when one is confronted with a
dead bird. Sometimes familiar species can be baffling at first, especially for
people not used to looking at specimens. Coming back to the bird in question,
is it a case that the bird was initially called a Peregrine and nobody felt
entirely comfortable in challenging that initial ID without further study?
Having a pile of photos is great - the flight shots are really spectacular -
but it is important not to ignore the impressions of people who saw the bird in
life.

I'm still hoping to see photos of the landed bird (ideally in a tree with the
body held in a typical upright fashion) so that we can better evaluate the wing
to tail proportions. I have seen a few shots of the bird on the ground standing
over the Herring Gull carcass but as I recall, the tail tip was obscured. Maybe
there are more suitable images out there?

Anyway, lets not close the case files right awat. I personally don't think it
is a simple slam dunk and working through the ID carefully will undoubtedly be
a valuable learning opportunity for all of us.
