[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Update

2019-10-26 Thread Steve Walter
The White Pelican was not seen today, as far as I know. The 2 Avocets were
present around the Raunt for some time during the early to mid-afternoon,
being easily visible from the East Pond overlook (when not behind geese or
other large birds). They eventually took off toward the north end. The
Eurasian Wigeon continues at the south end, as do Long-billed Dowitchers. I
can't say how many due to another issue with big bird blockage. A Redhead
and some Pintails headline the rest of the increasing duck variety and
numbers. Now up to a whopping count of 4 Snow Geese. Can they not see that
winter is coming?

2017-09-22 Thread Felipe Pimentel
I am here in the East Pond and the Avocet is here. It is further south (in the
middle of the pond). I have not seen the Godwit, very few shorebirds today.

The south end was better, with 3 juvenile Stilt Sandpipers, about 10

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Update

2014-08-30 Thread Sean Camillieri
As posted earlier, 1 Hudsonian Godwit flew in around 3:30. The bird stayed but
began to move frequently as time went on and it eventually flew North and out
of sight at 6:02. Other birds such as the Baird's Sandpipers, Western
Sandpipers, White-rumped Sandpipers, and Stilt Sandpipers were still present
when I left.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay update - Baird's, Avocet, Wilson's Phalaropes, Marbled Godwit

2009-08-23 Thread David Klauber

Most of the previously mentioned shorebirds at Jamaica bay were present this
morning, mostly on the East Pond with one addition - a juvenile Baird's
Sandpiper near the raunt on the east side. Highlights of the 18 species seen
were:

3 Wilson's Phalaropes swimming in circles together in the northeast corner of
the east Pond - looked like 2 adults and one juvenile, all approaching basic
plumage

Avocet - near the cove

White-rumped Sandpiper - several

Western Sandpiper - at least 4 juveniles along the east edge, mostly north of
the raunt

Willet - 2 eastern, 2 western - west edge south of the cove

Stilt sandpiper - a few near the island

Black Tern - near the cove by the plover flock

Marbled Godwit - seen best from bench 7 on the West Pond (not present at
7:30AM, but found around 9:30 and still there at 11:30)

Also a Wood Duck and a few Pied-billed Grebes

We had a report of the American Golden-plover south of the cove, but we could
not find it.

Observers: Seth Ausubel, Issac Grant, Bobby Rosetti, DK

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay update - no phalarope

Conditions and species are as noted previously with a couple of exceptions.
There was a lone Red Knot (faded breeding) with the dowitchers, one breeding
colorful Long-billed Dowitcher, the largest, brightest bird in its flock,
completely salmon pink through its underparts and the head not yet molted, and
BB Plover numbers increased somewhat. About 10 or so Stilt Sandpipers were a
bit south of the cove. Couldn't find a Pectoral

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay update

2009-07-30 Thread David Klauber

This afternoon between about 4:30 and 6:30 Bobby Rosetti and I met Lloyd and
Don Riepe at the north end of the East Pond. No Godwit or rarities. There were
3 adult Stilt Sandpipers that had heavy barring but had lost almost all of the
rufous on the face and cap. One adult Gull-billed Tern was seen. Otherwise the
usual suspects including a few hendersonii SB Dowitchers. There is an unusual
combination of fairly mucky though passable edges and very low water levels.
