[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, Manhattan

2020-09-12 Thread Ryan Zucker
Haven’t seen this posted here, but a Red Phalarope was found this morning by
Loyan Beausoleil at Stuyvesant Cove, at 20th St on the East River. The bird has
continued and has been very cooperative, often feeding within a few feet of
onlookers.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, & Central Park, NYC 4/25-26

2017-04-26 Thread Thomas Fiore
A Red Phalarope was discovered & “tweeted” in a mid-day report today, Wednesday
4/26, by David Barrett of Manhattan, at the northeastern edge of Randall’s
Island, in New York County, & in the northeast part of the East River estuary
off the eastern side of Manhattan island. I tried for this bird many hours
after the discovery, but was not successful, and D.B. had already made a note
that the phalarope was not seen again after the initial sighting &
identification. It’s quite the rare sighting rather generally from land, being
such a pelagic creature in winter & much of migration, but there are some solid
records from Manhattan, at least one photo’d. in fall 2015, & a late-summer
occurrence in Central Park, that being at The Lake just after a strong t-storm.
(The observer for the latter, Norma Collin of Manhattan, provided an
excruciatingly-detailed description, which matched in every way a sighting of a
fading-plumaged female Red Phalarope. That bird was not seen even 1 hour
later, as often can be with such weather-tossed wader-waifs.) I was
concentrating on potential phalarope sightings when I visited Randall’s Island
from about 5:45 - 6:45 pm, checking shore, creek, & marsh areas; on my way back
to Manhattan island (via the foot-bridge at East 102 St.) I noticed a Horned
Grebe on the Randall’s Island side of the river channel.

- - - - - - -
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

Wednesday, 4/26 - Paths near & along the Gill (a small stream) in the center of
the Ramble are re-opened to the public, or so it seemed as of late in the day
today; we shall all hope it is so.

A Barred Owl was found in the Ramble, an uncommon species for Manhattan,
although not without precedent, including within Central Park; it’s also likely
the species has occurred at least slightly more often than is realized, as with
some other regionally-resident owl species. The bird was documented with
photographs in a respectful way, at a high roost, in a deciduous tree.

Tuesday’s small batch of newer migrants seemed a bit reduced, yet there were
some species found Wed. that either had not been ‘uncovered’ as of Tues. or
perhaps did some skipping thru the rains & fog Tues. night, with at least 3
Indigo Buntings turning up (all adult males in rather bright color) in Central,
2 in one place & 1 along the s. edge of Sheep Meadow. Up at the north end of
the park, although migrants certainly seemed “thin”, there was an adult
White-crowned Sparrow mixed with a few White-throated, on the Great Hill’s
upper part. The swallow numbers of Tues. at the reservoir seemed much reduced,
at least by mid-morning there, although the same 3 spp. were present as had
been Tues. -

On the reservoir, a Red-necked Grebe is continuing & today, a very few N.
Shovelers, Ruddy Ducks, & modest no’s. of Buffleheads were also seen. Gulls of
3 species are still regular, and there have been ongoing but occasional fly-bys
or drop-ins by Laughing Gull. (the 3 regulars in gulls here are of course,
Ring-billed - now in lowered no’s., American Herring, and Great Black-backed).

- - - -
Tuesday, 4/25 -

There was a minimal, but modestly-diverse, fresh arrival of some migrants
overnight from Monday-Tuesday morning. In numbers, the most evident in one
location within the park were of swallows, with conservatively 30+ at the
reservoir, and consisting primarily of Tree Swallow. That these appeared in
numbers on a damp day with E & NE winds is typical here in mid-spring; often
the best weather for swallows, at Central Park is that with a NE or E. wind
component, & sometimes rain or fog in combination with such a wind.

Wild Turkey (female continuing at the south end of park, not that far from
Seventh Ave.)

Chimney Swift (2 or 3)

Barn (5-6), N. Rough-winged (4+) & Tree (20+) Swallows (over reservoir’s NE
sector, primarily)

White-eyed Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo were all seen, the
White-eyed just (east) across the West (park) Drive from Summit Rock.

Warblers were very “thin” and not too easily discerned, at least by mid-morning
& generally later on. There seemed to be a slight “concentration” (if it can be
called that), on the park’s western side, esp. in the latitude of the 70’s to
low 90’s streets (being adjacent to the park, that is). Of these species, the
only few that seemed to be at all cooperative, for some & at certain times
later in the day, were Blue-winged Warbler & of course Ovenbird. A Worm-eating
Warbler was at the area just south of the park entrance at W. 77th St., which
is not birded much, despite being very close to very-much-birded areas such as
Strawberry Fields & some other locations. (This area was checked today, Wed.
but no warblers were seen; an Orange-crowned Warbler was above the south side
of the W. 79th St. Transverse, in another small area that is not so much
looked-at despite its proximity to well-birded areas, such as Shakespeare
Garden & Belvedere

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope still present this morning as of about 10 am

2015-07-23 Thread Ardith Bondi
One more very interesting finding about the Eastern Hog-nosed snake -
their specialty food is TOADS! The snakes, apparently, are adapted to be
immune to the toxin in the toad's skin. In contrast, they are rarely
kept as pets because they don't like feeder mice (unless the mice are
first scented with amphibians).

They strike but do not bite, and instead flip over and play dead when
threatened.

They said the only other snake normally found out there is a garter snake.

A novel find on my way between the WE Nature Center and the blind,
was an

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope still present this morning as of about 10 am

2015-07-23 Thread Ardith Bondi
One more very interesting finding about the Eastern Hog-nosed snake -
their specialty food is TOADS! The snakes, apparently, are adapted to be
immune to the toxin in the toad's skin. In contrast, they are rarely
kept as pets because they don't like feeder mice (unless the mice are
first scented with amphibians).

They strike but do not bite, and instead flip over and play dead when
threatened.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope still present this morning as of about 10 am

2015-07-22 Thread John Laver
I (John Laver), Nancy O'Keefe & Barbara Saunders observed a dozen or so
Fowlers Toads at various points around the TRNC at Jones Beach West End
last weekend.

I thought I saw the rear end of a fox fleeing from my approach, as I hiked
out to observe the Red Phalarope last Sunday - but I can't confirm it.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope still present this morning as of about 10 am

2015-07-22 Thread John Laver
I (John Laver), Nancy O'Keefe Barbara Saunders observed a dozen or so
Fowlers Toads at various points around the TRNC at Jones Beach West End
last weekend.

I thought I saw the rear end of a fox fleeing from my approach, as I hiked
out to observe the Red Phalarope last Sunday - but I can't confirm it.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope still present this morning as of about 10 am

2015-07-22 Thread Ardith Bondi

I did not see any Fowler's toads today, but saw several last week.

The rangers also told me that they are trying to keep track of the
population numbers for the Hog-nosed snake, so if you see one, you might
let them know where and when. It is a very pretty snake.

They said the only other snake normally found out there is a garter snake.

A novel find on my way between the WE Nature Center and the blind, was an
Eastern Hog-nosed Snake (rangers in NC helped me ID it). My first Jones
Beach snake. Unfortunately, it took off too fast for a portrait.

Subject: Re: [ebirdsnyc] Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope WE2 Ponds JBSP Update

A few people e-mailed me for further details on the whereabouts of this bird so
I figured I would send a broadcast message.

When I left, about 30 minutes ago, the Red Phalarope was still showing well. It
sporadically takes flight in response to a number of variables including low
flying aircraft. As seen earlier, when it disappeared for over 20 minutes it
returned eventually to the ponds, just be patient and check all three ponds.
Please do not attempt to go down into the ponds as it may spook everything and
it may very well not return.

For logistics, park in the Teddy Roosevelt Nature Center parking lot and head
west through the dunes towards what appears to be an old blind--look for people
with scopes etc. Additionally, Least Sandpipers, White-rumped Sandpiper,
Short-billed Dowitchers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Killdeers, Semipalmated
Plovers, Eastern Willet along with both Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs are in
the area.

Happy Phalarope Friday!

The bird was showing well but kept getting spooked by low flying aircraft. It
kept moving back and forth between the two ponds. However, since this last
flight about 25 minutes ago it has been a no show.

I don't know if the swale has any water but I'll check that area and post an
update either way.

Jones Beach Phalarope location clarification Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, JBWE, YES

2015-07-13 Thread David Jordet
Hello,
Just to clarify the phalarope is located at Jones Beach West End (JBWE --
Nassau County) NOT Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge (JBWR Queens County).
These near identical acronyms looked like they might pose a problem for some.
Hope this helps avoid navigation errors and wasted days-offs in search of this
beautiful bird!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, JBWE, YES

2015-07-13 Thread Queensgirl
Still feeding at 2nd pond when I arrived at 11:15am, observed with Brooklyn
birders Cathy and Karen. Flew to 1st pond (nearest to Nature Center) around
noon, where it sat at the far end and, after 30 minutes, flew left, possibly
into the phragmites area. Birders are at the location now, waiting for the
phalarope to re-appear.

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope Continues

2015-07-13 Thread Peter Reisfeld
After hanging around for 2 hours and missing the bird yesterday morning, I
deserted my wife for breakfast today to try again. This time it paid off, as
the bird was there and was close to the edge of the pond west of the bird
blind. Attached is a link to a video.

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope Intel +

2015-07-11 Thread Andrew Baksh
I received some Intel suggesting that the Jones Beach Red Phalarope could be
one that was being seen at Plum Island MA. That bird was also a female with a
missing foot.

A quick peruse of the MA list serve showed the bird was last reported on July
8th.

In other other non Phalarope related news, I picked up an eBird alert this
evening of a "Reddish Egret" reportedly observed today on the West Pond at
Jamaica Bay. The eBird checklist provided no description of the bird other than
it was photographed by two other observers and that the submitter was awaiting
the photos.

Not sure what to make of this...

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope Picture and Notes

2015-07-11 Thread Steve Walter
I pulled out the heavy artillery optics to bring you a picture with wow
factor. Who are we kidding? It's a self-satisfying thing.
http://www.stevewalternature.com/

Some notes. I arrived around 2:30 to hear that the Red Phalarope hadn't been
seen in a hour. I first stopped at the easternmost pond, where I was told
she had been seen for a while feeding. Looking at the amount of water, it
was a surprise to hear that. The evaporation has been rapid, and by the time
I left around 6:00, there was almost no water at all. So it might be more
appropriate to use the term "pond bed". The next pond bed to the west also
had little water left. After about two hours, I was fearing that the
phalarope might have left because the water had dried up on her. Eventually,
she did show up at the easternmost pond bed, at one point passing over and
disregarding the useless remaining puddle. But she did spend considerable
time on dry land, providing hope for those that are considering going
tomorrow. There is another pond bed to the southwest, which is retaining a
bit more water, and perhaps providing enough interest to the phalarope to
keep her around. That is where she was located at about 4:30.

bit more water, and perhaps providing enough interest to the phalarope to
keep her around. That is where she was located at about 4:30.

Re: [ebirdsnyc] Re: [nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope WE2 Ponds JBSP Update

2015-07-10 Thread Andrew Baksh
A few people e-mailed me for further details on the whereabouts of this
bird so I figured I would send a broadcast message.

When I left, about 30 minutes ago, the Red Phalarope was still showing
well. It sporadically takes flight in response to a number of variables
including low flying aircraft. As seen earlier, when it disappeared for
over 20 minutes it returned eventually to the ponds, just be patient and
check all three ponds. Please do not attempt to go down into the ponds as
it may spook everything and it may very well not return.

For logistics, park in the Teddy Roosevelt Nature Center parking lot and
head west through the dunes towards what appears to be an old blind--look
for people with scopes etc. Additionally, Least Sandpipers, White-rumped
Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitchers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Killdeers,
Semipalmated Plovers, Eastern Willet along with both Lesser and Greater
Yellowlegs are in the area.

Happy Phalarope Friday!

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, Purple Sandpipers - Niagara Falls, Ont.

2013-11-30 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
A RED PHALAROPE was very cooperative today near the Canadian shore of the
Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was very near the shore with
the sunken barge in the background. You sometimes had to walk right up to
the railing and look down to see the bird. From the same spot, one could
look at the rocks at the base of the small waterfall to your right and see
two PURPLE SANDPIPERS.

It was very slim pickins for the gulls, exceptionally few today. I expect
they will be back tomorrow with the dumps closed. There was a juvenal
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE below the falls and another in Buffalo, opposite the
Lark Sparrow spot in Fort Erie (Central Ave. and Niagara Parkway). The LARK
SPARROW was seen today. A LITTLE GULL was seen in Lewiston/Queenston,
downriver from the Queenston boat ramp. Also in the area was a BLACK
VULTURE. An adult PEREGRINE FALCON was sitting on the Robert Moses power
dam, seen several times today. We did not see it go after any gulls today,
though we did see it catch a BONAPARTE'S GULL on Thanksgiving day.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope at Spuyten Duyvil

2012-10-30 Thread Joseph DiCostanzo
About 9 am I had a Red Phalarope land in the ship canal visible from my
apartment window at West 218th Street next to Inwood Hill Park in northern
Manhattan. The bird drifted westward towards Spuyten Duyvil and the Hudson
River. We tried to bird the Hudson from the west end of Dyckmann Street, but
police closed off the area.

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, Brooklyn waterfront 12/17

2011-12-17 Thread Bkbirdr
A Red Phalarope was found by my team on the Brooklyn (Kings County) CBC.
Location is behind the Fairway market in Red Hook, at the end of Van Brundt
street. The bird was in the section of water bounded by the artist's
warehouses on the left and the water taxi pier on the right (across from the
rusted out trolley cars.) It was swimming back and forth quite close to the
wall
alongside the artist's warehouse, actively feeding and preening at times.
See around 2 p.m.

A photo is on my Facebook page here:

_http://tinyurl.com/6n5as4s_ (http://tinyurl.com/6n5as4s)

This is the first record for a Kings County CBC.
See by: Janet Zinn, Alan Baratz, Eric Salzman, Jerry Layton

Good luck if you go. (I know at least one of our Brooklyn CBC folks were
heading over tonight!)

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope Continues

2011-09-08 Thread vanhaas
An amazing assemblage of shorebirds were present on Skinner Lane in Orange
County this morning the most notable of which was the continuing RED PHALAROPE.
At least a dozen birders viewed the bird during the hour and half I was
present this morning. I had a total of sixteen species this morning, fourteen
of which were on Skinner. Highlights included

American Golden Plover - 20
Pectoral Sandpiper - 31
White-rumped Sandpiper - 4
Semipalmated Plover - 4
Semipalmated Sandpiper -35
Least Sandpiper - 15
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Spotted Sandpiper
Short-billed Dowitcher - 4
Wilson's Snipe - 6
Sanderlings - 3
Killdeer - to many to count

Farther out in the fields, a Kestrel, Merlin and Harrier flushed large mixed
species flocks of shorebirds that may have contained anything. I have added
one more pic to my blog, hopefully a better one of the phalarope as well as a
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER which I found this morning at Apollo Plaza in Monticello.
Great Birding! John Haas

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope @ Sagaponack

2010-04-09 Thread Hugh McGuinness
At about 4:15 this afternoon I found a basic plumage RED PHALAROPE at
the south end of Sagaponack Pond (Suffolk Co.). The bird was best
viewed from the pond entrance along Sagg Main Street just before the
beach. The bird was at 40°54'39.20"N, 72°17'8.46"W. The only avian
sign that spring might be in the process of happening here on the East
End were the 7 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the
southeast corner of the pond.

At nearby Mecox Bay the extensive flat had several hundred shorebirds,
although PIPING PLOVER was the only non-wintering species present. A
first-year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was in the gull flock.

Good birding to all!

[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope - NOT Seen Again; Hamlin Beach Highlights

2009-10-17 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Thanks to Andy Guthrie for posting the Red Phalarope this morning. Around
7:45 a.m., Betsy and I were driving east on the Lake Ontario Parkway and had
a shorebird going in the same direction. We pulled over to look but only
got the tail as it continued east. We pulled over again but too soon and we
never got the head and bill. Finally, the third time we pulled over, I
noticed that the bill was too short for a Dunlin, which I had assumed this
bird would be, and Betsy noticed a dark facial patch. Now, of course, we
were thinking Phalarope. We got back in the car to follow the bird but
shortly it veered and headed low behind some trees where there was a large
pond. Most of the pond was obscured by thick trees but we found an opening
toward the east end, which allowed a view of a small piece of the pond. On
that small piece was a RED PHALAROPE! Our lucky day! Unfortunately, the
bird was not found shortly afterward by Andy, nor by us when we looked again
shortly after noon.

After the phalarope, we headed to Hamlin Beach, where we had three groups of
BRANT totalling 16 birds, each group flying right along the shoreline. The
other highlights were a PARASITIC JAEGER, several groups of all three
scoters, including many adult male Surf, a few LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and a
couple of RED-THROATED LOONS.

On the outer wall at Point Breeze, we had two juvenile LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS.

Good birding!
