[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose--Belmont Lake and Melville (western Suffolk County)

2016-01-14 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Pat Lindsay and I observed an adult Ross's Goose at Belmont Lake this morning.
Although critical individual-level study was hampered by distance and low light
conditions, circumstantial evidence suggests that this was the same bird seen
by Derek last evening in Melville--and the same bird he found in Massapequa on
9 January. After snapping a few shots of the Ross's, we began working through
the larger-than-in-recent-days flock of Canada Geese. While I found a pair of
Greater White-fronted Geese in the portion of the flock near the Ross's Goose,
Pat found a Richardson's Goose in a different area. After I shifted attention
to the Richardson's at 8:27, neither of us saw the Ross's or White-fronts
again. Although we didn't notice these individuals depart, the flocks departing
Belmont were heading to the northwest. And, most remarkably, Derek picked up a
Ross's and two White-fronts in Melville a short time later.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - Melville (Suffolk)

At about 4:45 PM, while driving home from work, I stopped to quickly detail a
flock of Canada Geese at the back end of the athletic fields at Sweet Hollow
Middle School in Melville. Within the flock was a single Ross's Goose.

This is very likely one of two individuals from the Amityville/Massapequa area.
I can say confidently that this is not the Avon Lake/Amityville Creek bird as
the bird I viewed tonight was lacking the yellow staining along the flanks and
did not have a wart at the base of its upper mandible (as seen on the Avon
bird). The Avon Lake bird has actually moved west to Unqua Lake as seen in some
images taken by other birders yesterday.

It's tough to say for sure but tonight's bird is very likely the same Ross's
Goose that I came across at Berner Junior High School in Massapequa on 1/9 and
has moved north. There is a lot of north/south flock movement in this part of
Long Island as evidenced by past sightings and it will be interesting to see
where these birds might be detected again.

Best,
Derek Rogers

It's tough to say for sure but tonight's bird is very likely the same Ross's
Goose that I came across at Berner Junior High School in Massapequa on 1/9 and
has moved north. There is a lot of north/south flock movement in this part of
Long Island as evidenced by past sightings and it will be interesting to see
where these birds might be detected again.

I am still viewing the Ross's in Massapequa at Berner Junior High School. I
suspected the Massapequa bird was a second Ross's. The bird I'm viewing now is
lacking the yellow stain as shown on the Avon bird. So we are dealing with two

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose continues in Amityville Creek (Suffolk Co.)

2016-01-08 Thread Ken Feustel
The Ross’s Goose was observed this afternoon at 2:15PM in Amityville Creek,
south of Montauk Highway, best viewed from an empty office building parking lot
at the NE corner of Riverside Road and Montauk Highway or from the Montauk
Highway sidewalk looking south down the creek. The bird was weaving its way in
and out of the moored boats, sometimes disappearing from view. This location is
across Montauk Highway (south side) from the Hidden Lake (might be wrong on the
name) condos on the north side of Montauk Highway. “Hidden Lake”, Avon Lake,
and Peterkin Park are all part of the Amityville Creek watershed.

Good Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - Calverton (Suffolk)

2015-11-24 Thread Derek Rogers
This morning, while headed east on Sound Ave., I noticed a large group of
Canada Geese streaming into a farm field north of the road. I turned off onto
Oakleigh Avenue (north) which provided a nice vantage point for viewing the
flock of 1000+ Canada Geese. Within the flock was a single ROSS'S GOOSE.

I only managed to view the flock for about 5 minutes until farm operations
began and sent the nervous birds back toward the south.

Just a heads up for those that might find themselves out this way.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose, Rusty Blackbird, Fox Sparrows 11/21/14

2014-11-21 Thread joetf1973
I was able to see the Ross's Goose found yesterday by Jim Pawlicki and Bill
Watson at Beaver Island SP (Grand Island, NY). The bird was on the manicured
swimming beach towards the marina. When I saw the bird it was in a group of
gulls (mostly Ring-billed, but Herring and Boneparte's also present on the
beach). The much larger deep-pink leg caught my eye, and then the bird was easy
to pick out from the gulls with which the goose was associating. I was able to
view 3 pipits at the park as well.

A complete checklist can be viewed here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S20624246

A quick stop at the Erie Basin Marina (Buffalo, NY) yielded 1 Rusty Blackbird
(previously reported?) and 2 Fox Sparrows.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - Southold (Suffolk Co.)

2014-03-08 Thread Derek Rogers
This morning I observed a Ross's Goose in a farm field along the north side of
CR-48 just west of Horton's Avenue in Southold. The bird was located at the far
north end of the field and viewing was less than ideal and too distant to rule
out hybrid. I returned later around 11:00 AM to find the Ross's Goose in better
light and closer to the road allowing for better, clinching views.

The question is whether or not this is the same goose that was discovered in
Riverhead on 3/1/14. Initial thoughts through photo comparison are inconclusive
and will likely remain so.

I'm currently in Riverhead searching for geese but there are slim pickings in
the area. A single Greater White-fronted Goose is in the southern most field
along the east side of Roanoke Avenue (south of Reeves Ave.).

Best,
Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose and Tundra Swans

2013-03-10 Thread vanh...@citlink.net
Though the Snow Goose flock at the Camel Farm took off this morning, they
returned in about an hour.  Down to about 1,000 birds at this time, the Ross's
Goose was immediately spotted.  They remained at the farm for the remainder of
the morning and were still present when we passed by at 1 pm.  About 20 minutes
after our arrival, Renee Davis spotted the Tundra Swans flying in.  They landed
in the smaller pond off the left of the main pond.  All birds were still
present at last look.  The first winter Ross's was not seen today to my
knowledge, but the flock was down by at least a couple of thousand birds.  John

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - West Brook Pond, Great River (Suffolk)

2013-02-06 Thread Derek Rogers
While driving home from work, on Sunrise Highway, I noticed a large flock of
geese flying south across the highway heading toward West Brook Pond. Knowing
that West Brook is a popular goose roost I decided to go investigate.

I had just enough light to glass the pond and sure enough, picked out the
ROSS'S GOOSE among the many Canada Geese at about 5:40 PM. The geese were
situated toward the north end of the pond. The Ross's Goose will very likely
spend the night on West Brook. I check West Brook fairly routinely. It seems
geese begin their departure between 7:30 and 8:00 AM, so the earlier the better
if you plan on trying for this goose. Also, it is very easy for geese to "hide"
behind the north islands in the pond, so just a heads up on that. The viewing
area for West Brook Pond is located on the north side of Montauk Highway, about
1/4 mile east of the entrance to Bayard Cutting Arboretum.

As I mentioned, the birds flew in from the north and there are some popular
feeding field towards the NW; 1) East Islip High School and 2) the Cohalan
Court Complex (near the LI Ducks Stadium). I think its safe to say that this is
undoubtedly the same Ross's Goose that I reported from Timber Point on 2/2/13.
Looks like it moved north and found a larger herd.

The bird was seen today at 0950 just before the entrance rd to field 6, but was
not there when I returned from my walk at 1220. It had relocated to the field
in front of the park office adjacent to parking lot 1. It was being harassed by
the other geese at both locations.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose and Barnacle Goose present this afternoon

2013-02-03 Thread Glenn Quinn
Shortly after noon today, the Ross's Goose was being observed in a small (about
75) flock of Canada Geese at Heckscher State Park (Suffolk). It was seen just
off the main loop road and north of the field 6 parking lot.
Right about here: 40.702082,-73.17019

Since it only took 5 minutes to find the Ross's, I headed over to the
Farmingdale area to look for the Barnacle Goose. After first checking the New
Montefiore, St Charles, and Beth Moses Cemeteries (no sign of life in any of
these), I found the Barnacle Goose where it had last been reported. It was in a
huge flock of Canada Geese in the southeast corner of Wellwood Ave and Long
Island Ave., just south of the LIRR tracks. Right about here: 40.744851,
-73.398505 Not sure if this cemetery property or golf course property.
I actually stopped the car right on Long Island Ave as traffic was light, but
then drove north across the tracks and immediately pulled into Pinelawn
Cemetery, where I picked up the goose again from the southern-most lane in the
cemetery. The Canada Goose flock was well over 1000.

Having seen the Tufted Duck yesterday at Blydenburgh CP (Suffolk), it made for
a nice weekend of waterfowl. Thanks to all who posted detailed locations for
these birds!!

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose at Heckscher State Park (Suffolk Co.)

2013-02-02 Thread Derek Rogers
Big thanks to Ken and Sue Fuestel for relocating the Ross's Goose.

I arrived at Hecksher around 3:30 PM where I ran into Sue Fuestel. She
immediately steered me in the right direction. The Ross's Goose was feeding
with a relatively small herd of Canada Geese north of Field #4 along a roadway
called Forty Foot Road, just off of the main park road. The geese were quite
active in their foraging, roving back and forth around the roadway. Several
birders were already on site viewing the bird. The Ross's seemed constantly on
guard as it took a few "nips" from the Canada's in which it fed with. There was
quite a bit of vehicle commotion along this roadway but it didn't really seem
to phase the geese.

A relief to finally see this bird on the ground.

Excellent, Ken!!

This is the very direction that the sub-flock containing the Ross's seemed to
head, leaving the river than hooking west. I did canvas Hecksher thoroughly,
after the fact, but came up empty. Thrilled to hear you relocated the bird!

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - Great River (Suffolk)

2013-02-02 Thread Derek Rogers
I pulled into Timber Point Golf Course at about 9:15 AM. I noticed a goose herd
feeding on the course, just south of the driving range area. This is toward the
west side of the course near the canal. I parked along the canal and began
walking toward an open area where I could get a nice detail on the geese.
Simultaneously, I noticed a pedestrian walking a dog heading right toward the
herd. The flock of about 300 geese lifted before I could sift through them on
the ground. In flight, at relatively close range, I noticed a petite white
goose traveling with a sub flock of about 10 Canada's. The Ross's type goose
was markedly, not just slightly, smaller than the Canada's with which it
travelled. Next, I tried to get a good handle on bill size and shape. I barely
even noticed bill protrusion. The overall size and shape of the birds body and
bill point directly to Ross's Goose.

The flock flew east toward the Connetquot River and 5 shotgun blasts sounded
loudly. The Ross's did not drop but the blasts were enough to send the
sub-flock, which contained the Ross's toward the south, mouth of the river. The
larger herd flew north up the river.

Of course, I would have preferred to detail this bird while on the ground so I
could rule out Ross's X Snow. But I'm very comfortable saying that there is
almost certainly a Ross's Goose in the area. I eventually crossed paths with
the hunters who acknowledged a "small Snow Goose" later flying up river. I
spent 4 hours trying to refind this bird but finally just gave up. Last I
checked, there were some geese back on the ponds at the golf course. Hoping
they reconvene tonight and commence feeding tomorrow morning. A very
frustrating search and chain of events. I'm really hoping this bird gets
relocated.

Best,
Derek Rogers

RE:[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose, no - Cackling Goose , yes / Merritt's Pond, Riverhead.

2013-02-01 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

From: rada...@msn.com
To: NY BIRDS (NYSBIRDS-L@cornell.edu
Subject: Ross's Goose, no - Cackling Goose , yes / Merritt's Pond, Riverhead.
Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2013 20:00:12 -0500

Today, between 1015 - 1115, I looked for the Ross's without success. The Snow
Geese (both "w & b") were also not found. The goose flock (about 1 / 4 of the
size it was on Monday) did produce at least 1 Cackling Goose, which was located
on the southern "half" of the lake, while all of Monday's birds were on the
lake's northern section.. Monday's flock was estimated (by John McNeil, who was
doing a waterfowl census that day) to be ~ 6,000.
After trying all of the other 6 viewing points (it takes about 5 minutes of
actual driving to travel the 6 streets) I parked on Ostrander Ave, and walked
into Peninsula Path. During my hour stay, I had the opportunity to speak with 2
of the 6 (?) homeowners on the block. They spoke well of the birders who have
been looking for the goose, but also made mention of a few of them driving in
and parking on this narrow, short (100 yards), and dead ended street. In my
post of 1/28, I recommended parking on O/Ave and walking P/Path, after first
trying the a fore mentioned streets. I would now ask any of the birding and
photography communities who try for the Ross's (except for those who are
handicapped) to please "park & walk".
I have been hesitant to report a bird that I saw (fleetingly) this past
Wednesday (1/30) on Route 51, just n/o Old Speonk-Riverhead Rd., Riverhead. It
was ~ 1:30 PM, with the day being gray and foggy, as I headed south, and the
bird, in an easterly direction. I first noticed this mid-sized, slender,
long-winged bird as it flew across the northbound lanes of this divided
highway. Within ~ 5 seconds, it was out of sight, immersed in the fog.
Momentarily puzzled, the first bird that came to mind was a
nighthawk...immediately followed by how incredulous this thought sounded !
Since we were headed toward Patchouge to visit one of RuthAnn's cousins in a
nursing home, and since my wife appreciates me not talking "birds" (after all,
it's been 48 years) I throttled my imagination until after we returned home,
and then "hit the books" ! Checking Bull's Birds of New York State (1974), his
Supplement of B/o/N/Y/S (1976) and B's/B/o/N/Y/S (1998) edited by Emanuel
Levine, I learned for sure what I initially felt was the case...this specie has
never been seen in NYS during the winter season. In fact, Chordeiles minor is
considered rare after September, with it's extreme migration date being
November,11* year not included.
If I was alone, I would have chased the bird down the nearest road (O/S/R/R)
and if I didn't overtake it (most probable) I then would have returned to where
I saw it, waiting a good amount (?) of time, waiting for the "whatever" to
return and end this almost impossible, possible mystery. Besides size, the only
"jizz" I got during those 5 crazy seconds were (as stated in NAS's The SIBLEY
Guide to Birds (2000) 'Desk Copy' " slender shape and erratic, bounding
flight". I didn't get anything else, including the usually prominent "white
bar" in primaries.
I welcome any comments or suggestions. Does anyone have knowledge of a similar
sighting anywhere in the northeast this season ?

Yellow-headed Blackbird(s) were still around this morning. Derek Rogers
and Mike Scheibel had one just West of Edwards Avenue on Rt 25a at around
10:15am and I had one (the same bird?) near Manor Road (just a quarter mile
East) about 20 minutes later. Apparently there are an awful lot of
blackbirds in the area though - Corey Finger just told he saw a flock of
40,000! The needles are probably still in the haystack though.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose & more !

2013-01-28 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Thank you Michael & Mike ! I found your goose ~ 10 AM on the north "half" of
Merrit's Pond in Riverhead, and it was still there when I left at 11:15. Also
roosting on the ice (both "halves" are mostly iced-over) were 9 Snow Geese, 5
being blue morphs. I was then joined by fellow ELIAS members, John McNeil &
Rosemary Valenti, who were finishing up their Middle Island to Jamesport
section of the Annual Waterfowl Census, which is sponsored by NYSOA, for the
U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service. Previously counted on one of his other waterfowl
survey sections, were ~ 600 Canvasbacks on Big Fresh Pond, Southampton.
Merrit's Pond is best viewed from Peninsula Path, a private, dead ended, narrow
road which runs for ~ 100 yards w/o Ostrander Ave, between Kings Dr. & Robinson
Pkwy. The pond is completely surrounded by private property, but can be
partially viewed from openings on 6 other streets. For these reasons, I

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose (Bklyn)

2011-12-03 Thread Heydi
Rob Jett and i are currently looking at a Ross's goose in the creek behind Mark
Twain JHS on Neptune Ave and West 24th Street. Possibly the same bird that has
been seen on and off at Floyd Bennett Field and the Brooklyn Golf Center.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose - Brooklyn

2011-11-30 Thread Robert Bate
The Ross's Goose continues in the area. Today it was seen at Floyd Bennett
Field in the grassy area between the main parking lot and the community
gardens in the company of maybe 10 Canada Geese. This area is right across
Flatbush
Avenue from the driving range where it has been seen most often recently.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose/Brooklyn YES

2011-11-25 Thread Shane Blodgett
The previously reported Ross's Goose is on the lawn in the NE corner of the
Brooklyn Golf Center. This is the driving range whose entrance is directly
across from the Aviator Sports entrance to Floyd Bennett Field.

I an actually viewing the Ross's from Flatbush Avenue (pulled over on shoulder
with flashers on), just behind the fence that borders the golf center property.
It is in with ~ 150 Brant and 20 Canadas.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Goose, Kittiwake, Black-headed, California, other Gulls - Niagara River

2009-12-05 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
The river was great today! Our group of seven birders had 12 species of
gulls, including the first BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE reported in the river for
the late autumn (there were two Kittiwakes at the river mouth back in
September). Betsy spotted the Kittiwake rafting with Bonaparte's Gulls just
a couple hundred yards above the falls - we had great looks! We were also
lucky enough to catch up with the adult ROSS'S GOOSE on the river near
Schweigler Road, found by the Burrells and their group. It flew shortly
after we got there and headed north along the river. This spot is a little
south of Bakers Creek, roughly halfway between Fort Erie and Niagara Falls.

There were excellent numbers of the less common species - our totals are
below:
ICELAND GULL - 20 total; 10 at Adam Beck overlook, 5 at the roosting rocks
1/4 mile upriver from Beck, 1 at the Whirlpool, 2 at the control gates, and
2 just above the falls.
GLAUCOUS GULL - adult at Adam Beck, 2 first-cycles above Niagara Falls.
THAYER'S GULL - 1 third-cycle and two adults at Adam Beck, 1 adult at the
control gates on the wall.
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL - 19 total!! 4 at Adam Beck, 1 at roosting rocks,
14 above the falls.
LITTLE GULL - one adult just above the falls.
CALIFORNIA GULL - the third basic was picked out by Andy Guthrie and later
by Betsy at Adam Beck; Jean Iron found it again later on the roosting rocks
(late morning).
BLACK-HEADED GULL - adult picked out by Jay McGowan and the Cayuga Bird Club
at the Whirlpool. Great pick, Jay!
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE - a first-cycle found late in the day just above the
falls.

Good birding!
