[nysbirds-l] Ross' Goose in Queens

2018-01-25 Thread Steve Walter
Eric Miller forwarded me a picture taken by Lisa Scheppke yesterday of a
Ross' Goose that they saw on a pond inside Fort Totten in northeastern
Queens. It looks very similar to the one from Baisley Pond. Characteristics
include some gray on the head, a slight curvature at the base of the bill,
and a slight grin patch. And actually, these traits had been suggested as
signs of hybridization (or some Snow Goose genes in there). That could mean
it's the same bird. Or it could mean that as Ross' Geese continue to become
more frequent around here, we'll find certain traits to be more regular in
them than traditionally attributed.

Also seen by them is what appears to be a Cackling Goose outside the fort,
inside Little Neck Bay.

Getting into Fort Totten, at least by car, could be hit or miss, depending
on the person at the booth. There is parking outside.

2013-12-21 Thread Andrew Baksh
Joe Giunta just called to report a Ross' Goose at Deep Hollow Ranch.
Possibly the same bird from the Montauk CBC.

There is also a continuing Cackling Goose at the same location with
about 5 Snow Geese.

Good luck if you go and many thanks to Joe for the report.

[nysbirds-l] Ross' Goose persisting at the driving range as of Monday 9AM Flatbush Ave, BKLYN

2011-11-28 Thread Richard Fleming
At eight this morning (Monday 11/28) I arrived at the Marine Park Golf
Course driving range, having failed to look there for the Ross' Goose on
Saturday when I spent all my time on the airfield. I found nothing but
several thousand golf balls and a couple of guys wandering around raking
them up. Despondent, and certain that I was doomed never to see this
particular goose, I made a complete but fruitless circuit through Floyd
Bennett field.

I am thankful that at nine am I went back across the road for just one last
look at the driving range, because the Ross' goose was by then there,
strolling gently out of the way of the golf-ball recovery tractors and
munching grass. There was not a Canada goose to be seen, just the Ross',
very much alone.

[nysbirds-l] Ross Goose - Yes

2011-11-27 Thread Joe T
The ROSS' GOOSE was present at the edge of the driving range's lawn at Brooklyn
Golf Center, just across the street from Floyd Bennett Field this afternoon
through 5pm in the fading light.

It was hanging out with 17 Canadas.  I pulled into the golf center's parking
lot, parked and walked down to the last bench on the range to see the birds;
they were not visible from the street.

Honestly, I thought the bird would be a little smaller, but this being my first
Ross', I'm nowhere near an expert on the ID.  Bill and head shape distinctive,
and sticks out like a sore thumb with the big, brown and black canadas.

Good luck to all who go,

Has it been definitively established that this individual is a Rufous
and not an Allen's? Did someone manage a photo of the tail feathers
spread out?

[nysbirds-l] Ross' Goose and Harlequin Duck, plus Lenoir Preserve Hummingbirds

2011-11-26 Thread Seth Ausubel
The Ross' Goose was still on the lawn at the Brooklyn Golf Center across from
the Aviator Sports entrance to Floyd Bennett Field late this afternoon. An
immature male Harlequin Duck was off the fisherman's parking lot at Fort
Tilden. There were about 500 Bonaparte's Gulls feeding offshore. The Rufous
Hummingbird continues at Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers. The second hummingbird
there is a Ruby-throated.

Could not find the Ross Goose at Floyd Bennett Field today from 2-3pm.  Ran
